OSX-like Dock in Ubuntu! (Docky Tutorial) _ Ubuntu 16.04 Tips

Welcome to Another Ubuntu 16.04 Tips Video: Setting Up Docky

Hello everyone, my name is Adam ARA box and welcome back to another Ubuntu 16.04 tips video. In this video, I'm going to show you how to set up a dock like in OSX very simply using a program again from the Ubuntu software center. This is called docky and it's one of the still remaining docks here.

By default, there's not much in it, so if we right click it and go to settings, we can take a look at the settings. You're going to set it to automatically start when you log into your computer. You've got a couple different themes you can look at down there at the bottom. I love the themes for this; I love them all. Um, smoke, transparent, or mate. I think I like the heads up theme, heads up display theme, the best. You can install custom themes that you can download from their website and from their forums.

Things like that. Uh, you have little dockets that you can download helpers that you can download. So, if we go to Launchpad and get dock manager. Uh but it's no longer supported so we can't get du manager all right. So, it's just a nice little dock here. Then, if we can, we drag from here onto the dock.

Okay, how do we want to drag onto the dock? Go to Applications. Let's just yep, you can just drag. Oh no, maybe not. Yeah, you can just drag and drop from your applications menu onto the dock sometimes it wants to be a little difficult cuz Unity start menu wants to be difficult there we go so just kind of wait and until it says drop to add to Dock and then it will do it.

This is nice because frankly, frankly it looks nicer than Unity launcher over here on the side. It gives you some space since this also asks for that on the right also acts as a window manager. You can keep your apps here and then worry about managing your windows over here. So, if this video has been helpful for you smash the like button get subscribed again.

This is called docky. You can pick it up in the software Center. Very easy installation only took a couple seconds. Check the playlist link in the description below for more awesome Ubuntu tutorials and I will catch you in the next one.

Setting Up Docky

Setting up docky is very simple using a program again from the Ubuntu software center. The first step is to download and install docky. Once installed, right click on the dock and go to settings. This allows us to customize the settings for our dock.

One of the options we have is to set it to automatically start when we log into our computer. This means that every time we boot up our Ubuntu system, the dock will appear and be ready for use. We can also change the theme of our dock from the settings menu. There are several themes available, including smoke, transparent, mate, heads up display, and more.

In addition to changing the theme, we can also install custom themes that we download from the internet or create ourselves. This adds a bit of personalization to our dock and makes it more unique. We also have access to little dockets that we can download to add functionality to our dock. These are called helpers, and they can be used to perform various tasks such as launching applications or managing windows.

Another feature of docky is its ability to act as a window manager. This means that we can keep all of our open windows in one place, making it easier to manage and switch between them. The dock also provides a bit of space on the right-hand side, which can be used for other purposes such as launching applications or accessing frequently used items.

To add an application to our dock, we simply need to drag and drop it onto the dock from our applications menu. Sometimes, this process may require us to wait for a moment until the system says "drop to add to Dock" before the application is added. However, overall, the process is very straightforward and easy to use.

Using the Dock

One of the most noticeable differences between docky and Unity launcher is its appearance and functionality. The dock looks more modern and sleek than the Unity launcher, and it provides a bit more space on the right-hand side that can be used for other purposes. Additionally, docky acts as a window manager, making it easier to manage and switch between our open windows.

To use the dock effectively, we need to understand how to drag and drop applications onto it from our applications menu. This process may take a bit of practice, but once we get the hang of it, it's very easy to use. We can also customize the dock by installing custom themes and helpers that provide additional functionality.

Overall, setting up docky is a great way to add some modern flair to our Ubuntu system while still providing us with the functionality we need to manage our windows and applications. With its simple installation process and user-friendly interface, docky is definitely worth checking out for anyone looking to improve their Ubuntu experience.
