The Video Interview: A Conversation about Sugar and Addiction
It's both rainy and sunny, I'm sorry if the rain was smudgy, I forgot to wipe off the lens. Jedi's been coughing a little bit this morning, we can't say that she's any better and we can't say that she's any worse. We've been having a discussion about sugar this morning, yeah, and I fully believe that at some point in Jedi's lifetime, sugar is going to be labeled a drug.
Well, I was watching a documentary about child obesity, they'll at least go as far as to put warning labels on anything that has sugar, kind of like what they do with cigarettes now. People don't choose to be overweight or addicted to anything, exactly in many ways. The addiction chooses them. But honestly, watching these documentaries makes me have so much more respect for you; it's so hard, it's so hard to stop the psycho, it's so hard to undo what you've been taught, and it's scary. I think I'm worried for Jedi because I know, and I've been there, and I feel like I went through withdrawals with sugar.
I honestly do, and there are days when I still crave it, and there are days when I crave it badly, and I do wonder, you know, they add sugar and additives into all these foods that just cause you to want more sugar. Even if you're not eating sugar, you're still eating it. What are we gonna do? Lead by example, because that's a reason why I kicked the habit by and large over a decade ago. But it's so hard, how do you do it? It's so hard. You just have to decide what's more important, just have to decide, and that's it.
Are you going to try to reason with yourself? Do you think you're the exception to the rule? No one's the exception to the rule. I don't judge others based on their decisions; all I know is what's been true for me. What I know based on what I've been through, and my experience. And I can't think of a better way of getting credentials than having experience.
But I don't judge if it ain't my body; it ain't my business. You have to treat it like an addiction. How well is the problem? Is it something you don't see as a problem? If you don't recognize it as a problem, it's never going to get fixed. Sometimes even when you know it's a problem, you may not have the means or ability to get it fixed. Honestly, the best course of action is avoidance; just avoid it, not fighting ignorance, but actively avoiding it.
It's gotten easier over time, believe it or not. I'm finding it very difficult right now to not relapse, and I can't find a better word for it because I know once I go back to sugar, I'm going to want it. Baby, you know how it is. I've struggled with my own weight my entire adult life, and a lot of it is learning what your body can handle and what it can't handle. And it's different for everybody; that's why you can't judge exactly because you don't know what someone's gone through.
You don't know what someone's going through. Yes, exactly. I know I've helped people in the past just by talking about it. Well, you help me. You've lost like 10 lbs; I have. And I know people are very sensitive about this topic, but it's something that weighs heavily on our minds as parents, as humans, as adults.
All we can do is just teach her, show her the science, explain to her that a lot of that food product is not food. Gosh, it's not even 8:00 a.m. We're deep in conversation; we do hope you understand, Jedi. It's our job to keep you safe, boo. One of Daddy's favorite things to do is to keep you protected from yourself and the world around you.
You know what's sweeter than sugar? Realizing that it doesn't control us. Meeting again solo, but as you can see, killing me only made me stronger, and I also learned English. Daddy had a duplicate of the Christmas-themed Astromech; he opened one.
