Your Next Smartphone Fingerprint Sensor Will Work Like This - Synaptics Clear ID

Hello Everyone: An Introduction to Synaptics Clear ID Technology

Hello everyone, I'm Marco Chiappetta for Hot Hardware, and today we're going to take a closer look at some really cool technology from Synaptics. What we have in front of us right now are two phones from Vivo, the Vivo Ex 20 Plus UD, and these phones are basically identical. One of them has a screen protector on it, which you can probably just make out the edge right there. Trust me, there's a screen protector on this one. This one is bare, and these phones feature Synaptics Clear ID technology.

Synaptics Clear ID Technology: A New Era in Fingerprint Sensors

So, what is Synaptics Clear ID technology? Essentially, it's a fingerprint sensor that's located behind the display of your phone. With screens getting larger and bezels shrinking, there's less real estate to hide things like cameras, speakers, buttons, and fingerprint sensors. One common solution is to cut out a notch in the display to accommodate the camera system, but this move has been gaining popularity as companies opt for cleaner front designs.

The Importance of Fingerprint Sensor Technology

Fingerprint sensor technology is important because it provides an ideal solution for hiding something behind glass. Instead of sticking it on the back in an awkward location, getting something hidden behind the display is a more practical and aesthetically pleasing option. This is why companies are moving towards this design, and Synaptics Clear ID technology has taken a significant step forward in addressing this challenge.

A Close Look at the Vivo Ex 20 Plus UD

Now, let's take a closer look at the Vivo Ex 20 Plus UD. When I pick up the phone, it wakes up, and that little spot on the bottom lights up. If I touch it, bingo! The phone unlocks. I've been playing with this phone for a few minutes now, and it's very reliable. With just one touch of the sensor, the phone is unlocked, working exactly like a standard fingerprint sensor.

The Reliability of Synaptics Clear ID Technology

I know some people have raised concerns about screen protectors potentially posing a problem for behind-the-screen sensors. Technically, this could be an issue, but let me show you how this one behaves. When I wake up the phone and touch the sensor, it works like magic! Let me do that again for you – wake up the phone, touch the sensor, and... the phone is unlocked! And once more, for good measure: wake up the phone, touch the sensor, and... the phone is unlocked!

The Future of Synaptics Clear ID Technology

We're excited to see this technology being adopted by other manufacturers. While we don't have any design wins to announce just yet, it's a sought-after technology that we wouldn't be surprised to see more phones with later in the year and into next year. The future is looking bright for Synaptics Clear ID technology, and we're eager to see how it will continue to evolve and improve.

That's all from us today at Hot Hardware. We hope you've enjoyed this quick look at Synaptics Clear ID technology!
