Mercedes S63 AMG vs Jaguar XJR - Part One - Fifth Gear

The Big Car Contest: Mercedes and Jaguar Face Off

In this exciting episode of our big car contest, we'll be pitting two CEO specials against each other to find out which one offers the best blend of muscle and manners. Joining me will be former Formula 1 and current Formula E driver Karun Chandok, together we'll put these high-performance vehicles through a series of challenges designed to test their agility, acceleration, braking ability, and most importantly, how well they can get us out of a tight spot.

Both cars have serious performance credentials. The Mercedes S63 AMG boasts a 5.5 L twin turbo V8 that will propel it from 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds before topping out at a restricted 155 mph. In comparison, the Jaguar XJR features a supercharged 5 L V8 capable of accelerating the car to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of 100 mph. The price difference between these two cars is also quite notable, with the Mercedes S63 AMG starting at just shy of £120,000 and the Jaguar XJR available for a more affordable price tag of around £92,000.

To test which car can better navigate tight spots and evade "bad guys," we've devised an auto test that involves navigating a slalom, completing a three-point turn, parking in a garage, and making a sharp turn through a roundabout. As many VIPs as possible will be traveling in vehicles like these, making it essential to choose the right car for the task at hand.

With Karun behind the wheel of the Mercedes S63 AMG, we'll start by navigating the slalom course. The car's Magic Ride Control system uses a camera to scan the road ahead and prime the adaptive suspension for any undulations, providing a smooth ride even on rough terrain. However, when Karun attempts to shift into reverse, he finds that changing gears is not as simple as he expected. "It's not too bad to the SL," Karun says, "but it takes some time to get used to." The car does manage to complete the slalom course with ease, but the delay in shifting out of reverse mode costs precious seconds.

Next up is the three-point turn. This is where the Mercedes S63 AMG really shows its stuff, handling with surprising agility and precision. Karun finds it easy to navigate the tight spaces and even manages to squeeze through a particularly narrow corner. However, once again, the clunky gear selector causes him some frustration.

After completing the slalom course and three-point turn, Karun moves on to parking in a garage. This is where the Mercedes S63 AMG really shines, providing a smooth ride and precise handling even in tight spaces. However, as soon as Karun attempts to shift into reverse, he finds that changing gears is not as easy as he expected.

Finally, it's time for the roundabout. This is where the Jaguar XJR truly comes into its own, handling with surprising agility and precision. Despite having a more restricted top speed than the Mercedes S63 AMG, Karun finds it surprisingly easy to navigate the tight spaces of the roundabout. In fact, he even manages to make a few sharp turns without any issues.

When it comes time to complete the final challenge of navigating the roundabout and escaping "bad guys," Karun knows that he's got a good chance of winning with the Jaguar XJR. He takes his foot off the gas pedal and lets the car coast through the roundabout, using the brakes only when necessary. When he emerges from the roundabout, he finds himself facing a group of "bad guys" who are attempting to stop him.

Without hesitation, Karun floors it and accelerates away from the group, using the Jaguar XJR's powerful engine to put some serious distance between himself and his pursuers. As he speeds down the road, Karun takes advantage of the car's electronic damping system, which adapts the suspension up to 100 times per second to provide optimal handling and stability.

When Karun finally reaches a safe location, he pulls over and assesses the damage. Despite having faced several "bad guys" along the way, Karun finds that the Jaguar XJR has held its own remarkably well. In fact, he even manages to maintain his speed and composure throughout the entire challenge.

In contrast, the Mercedes S63 AMG had some issues with the gear selector, which caused Karun some frustration during the roundabout section of the challenge. However, when it came time to complete the final challenge of navigating the roundabout and escaping "bad guys," Karun found that the car's powerful engine and agile handling made it a perfect candidate for the task at hand.

When the dust settles and all is said and done, Karun announces the winner of our big car contest: the Jaguar XJR. With its impressive performance credentials, agility, and handling, this car has proven itself to be an excellent choice for navigating tight spaces and evading "bad guys." The Mercedes S63 AMG may have some impressive specs on paper, but when it comes to real-world driving, the Jaguar XJR is the clear winner.

As we conclude our big car contest, Karun shares his thoughts on what made the Jaguar XJR stand out from the competition. "The best way I can describe how this 911 handles is like it's a normal 9911 in high definition," he says with a smile. This car may not be as flashy or expensive as its competitors, but when it comes to real-world driving, it truly shines.

In the end, our big car contest has come to a close, and we've found that the Jaguar XJR is the clear winner. But which car is right for you? That depends on your needs and preferences. If you're looking for a car that can handle high-performance driving with ease, then the Mercedes S63 AMG may be worth considering. However, if you're looking for a more practical and affordable option that still packs a punch, then the Jaguar XJR is definitely worth looking into.

Regardless of which car you choose, one thing is certain: our big car contest has proven that both the Mercedes S63 AMG and the Jaguar XJR are truly exceptional vehicles. With their impressive performance credentials, agility, and handling, these cars are sure to provide years of driving pleasure for their owners.
