Ferrari VS Aston Martin - the speed & braking test _ Fifth Gear

The Grand Tour: A Real-World Test of Performance and Road Manners

As Jason Dawe from The Grand Tour explained, if you're shelling out over $200,000 for a supercar, you've got every right to expect plenty of get-up-and-go and serious stopping ability. To put this expectation to the test, the team conducted a real-world combined acceleration and braking test on a deserted straight road from a standing start up to 50 miles an hour or 80 kph, and back to zero. The car that completes the test in the shortest distance wins.

Ferrari Takes the Lead

First up was Ferrari, with its 800 horsepower engine and 165 kilograms of weight advantage over Jason's Aston Martin DBS Superleggera. Despite a slightly tardy start, Vicky started where she expected to, and Jason followed suit with his Lacroix song choice, using the Lebanon as inspiration for his driving style. On paper, Ferrari was the favorite to win, with a 0-60 time of just 2.9 seconds. However, when it came to the test, things didn't quite go as planned. The Aston Martin performed poorly, struggling with traction control and experiencing two-wheel spins on multiple occasions.

A Second Chance for Aston

Undeterred by his first attempt's dismal performance, Jason decided to give the Aston another go. He discovered that the car's traction control was struggling, making it difficult to predict when the rear wheels would spin. This made it challenging to feel what was happening with the car and adjust accordingly. The result was a lackluster performance, with the Ferrari stopping several Carlin's ahead of the DBS.

The French Vote

After conducting two tests – road manners and sound styling and space – the team asked their audience for their opinion on which car was superior. To their surprise, the Aston Martin received more positive feedback than they had expected. The French voters seemed to appreciate the car's sleek design, with some even describing it as "beautiful." However, when it came to performance, the Ferrari was still the clear winner.

The Verdict

In the end, it was no contest – the Ferrari emerged victorious in both tests. While the Aston Martin had its strengths, particularly in terms of sound styling and space, it simply couldn't match the Ferrari's acceleration and braking capabilities. As Jason concluded, "it's time to stop all the performance of these grand tours because if you're shelling out over $200,000 for a supercar, you've got every right to expect plenty of get-up-and-go and serious stopping ability." The Ferrari had proven itself to be the ultimate supercar, leaving the Aston Martin in its wake.
