Our Approach to Restoring a Nissan GTR
As we begin our restoration project, it's clear that this Nissan GTR is going to be a labor of love. One of the key differences between our approach and other restorers is that we're not just focused on bringing this car back to life, but also on making sure every detail is perfect. We're trying to wrap the fenders to protect the paint, which is something we've never done before, and we're hoping to find some hidden gems like a built engine or a modified transmission.
We started by pulling out the plugs and doing compression tests to make sure the engine was healthy. As it turns out, our test results were a bit different from what we expected, but we weren't too worried since all of our compression tests are always 120, regardless of which cylinder we're testing on. We took a closer look at the engine and were pleased to find that it was surprisingly clean, with minimal rust or corrosion. The fuel rail and coil packs were also free from any damage.
As we continued our inspection, we noticed that the intake manifold was in great condition, despite being used for many years. We're not sure where all of the dirt and grime came from, but it's clear that this car has been well-maintained at some point. The previous owner had done some work on the car, including installing a new cluster, which we verified by comparing it to other similar cars.
Before we could even think about disassembling the engine, we needed to get our hands on some tools. Luckily, our neighbors at psi loaned us a table jack that would allow us to carefully lift out the front suspension and drivetrain without causing any damage. We used this tool to slowly lower the car onto a lift, making sure everything was secure and even.
Now that the engine is out of the car, we're going to start dismantling it in order to give it a thorough cleaning before we paint it. We're not entirely sure what to expect, as the engine bay didn't look as messy as we thought it would be. But with the help of some friends and a lot of TLC, we're confident that this car is going to turn out beautifully.
One thing we've been thinking about is painting the car in its original color. We used to think about leaving it black, but now we're considering a beautiful midnight purple color instead. Whatever we decide on, we know that this car is going to look amazing once we're done with it. In our next video, we'll be diving deeper into the restoration process and talking about some of the other parts we'll be swapping out or modifying.
We've been in touch with other sellers who have sold similar cars, and we can't wait to share their stories and experiences with you. We'll also be going over some of the parts that make this car unique, including its transmission and transfer case. So stay tuned, folks - it's going to be a wild ride.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enwhat's up guys welcome to today's video we are in the best car ever because the skylines the best car ever and because I've been used as a daily because now it works and I'm really happy and I'm excited starting off this video this isn't something I normally do but we did that live from here last night and I kind of I made a joke that kind of made Clark comfortable I'm sorry about that and I was I was like you know if someone did this then I would do this and long story short very very generous guy by the name of Harold did a very large super chat there was no way that I could refund him or take it back and all that he asked for was a shout out in the video so I told him was it you know what the insurance of tomorrow's video I will shout you out Harold so I appreciate you Harold I think Colette appreciates that all you wanted was a shout out and not the alternative but you know what Harold this is also for you get it you get it thanks Hale Harold is a nice guy did Harold actually exist where's Harold like a what does it mean what are you Harold maybe funny is that your burner account we're so here's a problem guys if you work at Starbucks corporate maybe you can help me out on the mobile online ordering app for whatever reason for months I haven't been able to order Blonde Nespresso it sounds like a really meaningless problem I know huge problem because I just yeah you know every day has just started awfully because they can't get the coffee they don't want and then off time to step through the drive-thru and then I realized though if you go to the drive-through they have blonde so I don't know what the reason is I don't know why you can only get blonde if you could subscribe through but it's not cool and I would like something not about it so I'm gonna address it to the lady at the window today it's a probably think I'm crazy but um ya know I appreciate that a lot one thing I'm pretty excited about I actually picked up a set of scales so I can from now on way builds and kind of see you know when we make changes whether it be a titanium exhaust or something else we can know exactly the difference in weight we can corner balance cars if we want but more or less I have a lot of bills that I have no idea what they weigh just because we don't have scales so I'm curious for something like this that you know ways I believe 3000 pounds from the factory I'm curious with the modifications everything that's gone into it what will away my guess is because of the fact that a lot of the heavier stuff is removed from the car in terms of like a mission stuff exhaust etc I'm guessing this cars gonna be somewhere in the mid 2000s but now that we've got a scale we can check I'm excited for lower down let's make sure this thing zeroed I'm really curious what this thing's gonna weigh drumroll and we're actually over 3,000 pounds that's heavier than I thought mind you this car doesn't have really any weight reduction or anything done to it so it still has all the sound deadening full interior speakers Alberta what's your guess 3,050 it's heavy I thought it'd be less mm I the CD probably weighs a little bit more than RB 20 trans I didn't forget about that remember it's full interior and has speakers and all the sound deadening still but that's kind of crazy since the factory weight is about 3,000 pounds I thought for sure it would be less but yeah but I don't know it's still interesting to know cuz see here I thought this car weighed a lot less so that means this thing's real fast if it's pulling on cars and weighs what it actually does that what this means I'll burn if you let go it means that this car definitely needs to be corner balanced cuz there's way more white weight on these weight actually I don't know yeah well on that corner and the rear corner that's weird true I definitely need to learn how to understand what everything means a little bit more but what is kind of interesting it is 48 rear 50 to front which isn't that bad all right so I'm gonna get in the car now and we're gonna see how the corner weights are from what I understand if we have like way higher left front and right rear we'll want to raise the car on the right front and left rear and that'll put more weight on them take a little weight off here well a better traction in the four wheels so that could potentially help with some of my grip issues how much I don't necessarily know but something works out all right so based on this the right front scan need to be raised quite a bit and so is the left rear which is really interesting because the right height looks pretty the same all around but I guess because of fiberglass fenders and stuff you can't just go based off that oh I mean maybe just the weight distribution sucks I don't know like I said I don't know a lot about it but all I know is that's a pretty big difference so if I'm correct that would mean that essentially there feels like there's 300 pounds more on the right rear wheel so by changing these around will kind of move some weight from this to this and this to this and then we'll have a little bit more grip equally distributed so will it grip better maybe a little bit I don't know do drag racers corner balance cars Boulevard is different than a car like twist here right oh it puts even more weight on this tire is the over thing in this for a skyline street cars just designed to raise Mustang GTS but I don't know yeah let us know so like I said we're new to this whole corner balancing thing although I have corner balance of you before I've never done it myself from it any adjustments and what I'm learning is before we use these numbers as a guide to start raising like the right front and the left rear in order to put more load on them we want to disconnect the sway bar because that can be like kind of interfering and playing a roll of things so the first thing we're gonna do is just connect that sway bar and then see what the cross weights are and then start reasoning and adjusting sides and I don't know it's kind of interesting doing all this so I think the craziest thing about doing this corner balancing Yolen and I both have like a big like aha moment because we're essentially like I said worried using the two corners that aren't the ones that were wait jack so this corner and that corner of the ones were heavier so you raise those two but I was mad because this is the side that actually needed to be raised but yeah cosmetically well not only that because it was rubbing real bad right so by raising this side and raising that side because we're taking weight off this it's actually raising this side too so even though it seems like we're just raising you know two opposing sides it's actually raising this two because before I was tucking tire a little bit and now it's getting the point where I might say instead of just keeping on raising the other sides we can start to lower the other sides and achieve the same effect so all hop in the car right now and you want to take the camera and just film where we're at now yeah no serious question should we be doing this with qalaat in the passenger seat yeah do we draw a lot with my car the car seems to be fighting us a lot our hypotheses maybe because it's got so much flex in it that actually adjusting the corners isn't really affecting opposing side like it should however I know one thing with drag racing or any sort of straight line cars you want more weight over the rear of the car and what's interesting about the changes that we've made we started off with about 1,500 pounds over the rear of the car and we've moved around weight to where now the rear of the car is about eighteen almost nineteen hundred pounds so we've added somehow an extra four hundred pounds to the rear of the car which which to be honest I didn't even know it's possible I thought the weight distribution was just like kind of justified by you know having heavy engine in the front and a light rear but in theory it that would make it feel lighter in the front right yeah helpful it motor and everything now having be able being able to add the way to the rear and have that affect how the car feels on the straight line or racing in general for like typical road racing they probably wouldn't want what we're doing they probably want a little more weight over the front but what's interesting is that now instead of having equal weight distribution front and rear we have like six hundred pounds less in the front that sounds wild how's that even possible yeah Hank wouldn't see why we could come up with but dang it's sort of working around favor yeah I mean we're not really getting the corner balance that we want but removing weight to the rear which is cool well after trying again with ramps thinking maybe we've messed it up by using the lift to go up and down onto it Yohann may or may have not noticed one of the very critical things you're supposed to not do and using corner scales and let's plug them in the wrong way who's at fault I would love to blame Schulman but he was nowhere near any of this so I cannot blame Schulman got her all right maybe we maybe who knows oh boy now's when the fun part but yet does you see by the title of this video it is officially gonna be the last day that I drive our 34 for a while I am taking it over to Titan because I thought it would be cool since with my build I am keeping a stock bottom end we get a baseline to see what the car is making in essentially form as he stands right now as far as I know the card basically has a chipped mine GCU and the booze turned up with down pipes and a drop-in filter so I have no idea what its gonna make I'm assuming high 300s but I thought it'd be cool to be able to have a before and after comparison so I'm going on my way to go over the tie-in go hang out with the guys see what a stock 34 GTR makes for star pulling up all the cool cars in the house as always and I'm gonna put you on the spot to call me out well what was I about to do when we were strapped in the car down strap through the spoke of ain't always Drive I don't think that would have worked out too I wasn't thinking I was just trying to help this is big this is my first time to drive a car on this dyno and I found a lot of cars on this dyno yeah that's right your mistake was understand all right what's your bet what's your bet whoo I'm gonna go ahead and say this it's time to read higher low usually compare another dyno I feel like even though it feels real slow it did pull on Mormons in 92 m3 so I'm gonna say that this thing makes 380 so a lot of people wish for the moon and then you get watching make 295 Pro but it'd be really cool if it at least cracks three high oh boy you're setting expectations low huh that's why yeah I'll prematurely yeah so I never go through the hassle of doing a baseline down on any of the cars but I thought for this one since we're keeping it kind of simple I would actually take the time to do it and see what it makes out of curiosity so honestly it'd be so I'll be really happy if this makes over I think it will I'm hoping for 380 I think 350 based on my but Dino is very very possible it has the boost turned up and down pipes yeah I think it's running like a bar so it's not like it's got a ton of boost there ceramic alright I'm gonna have to change my statement oh boy now what did you say Anna I I'm hoping for 380 but I know it's gonna make over 350 you were saying 315 but now hurting this hearing has new information with three-sixty would you change your mind if I told you it has like probably about a half a tank of MS 109 368 final final number all right and it's really he's so because I drove fast to get here all of the fans on it we have some brand new fans we're going to let this thing get cool and then we're going to see what all right and we've got a whopping 350 horsepower heard a very small miss up towards the top I think I got a little mad but 350 bro not bad she's bass dude seeing as this car is like probably designed from the factory to shift around like seven or eight grand that's a pretty solid like chunky power band up there it's just a problem with 30 forces the gearing so long that you end up falling back down to here between shifts that's why a lot of people do for 11 years so they can live in this region up here and that is one thing that we're gonna do but yep good to know now we've got our baseline I'm hoping when I come back it'll be like yeah yeah yeah those are triple A's they're like 10 times wider than the car itself it's gonna be a while before I Drive this thing again but I am very very very excited to finally tear into it the last time we'll ever see this poor thing running got it so pretty so I need you to reenact you're just describing to us how it feels when you're when you're in it like some cars okay feels okay whatever but then I can get in the third floor it's just like yeah like this feels like a gut like be like this feels right it feels like a tough I don't know every 35 all right so we're gonna take a little bit of a different approach to this one thing that I want to do is really take our time when we're taking this apart bag all the little bolts and stuff and we're actually gonna do a swap with Tommy who has a lot of these bolts already zinc-coated but little things like looking through while we dismantle you know a lot of stuff we can still get new OEM like if I wanted to get a new fuse box cover or I notice in the back this little clip that holds all the brake lines is damaged so just dumb little stuff like that I can pull up parts diagrams and I can try to find some of this stuff new so when we put all back together we have fresh new parts but before we do anything I do want to just compression test engine right off the bat since we are keeping a stock bottom end just know that working with the healthy engine in case I need to overnight a short block from Japan or something eventually maybe we'll see but we got to get this hood off I think we're actually gonna saran wrap the whole car to to be safe with it we'll take this set off what do you want to do hang it so doesn't get damaged yeah I'll be kind of cool yeah the cool thing is like even though this is kind of like a foreign car to us and kind of different these sounds are kind of all the same and I've gotten pretty familiar with RVs from working on the r32 so delving into this it isn't like I'm scared or anything is really weird you're confusing I'm trying to be really organized so that this table is gonna be stuff that's gonna be reused so I know like what bolts I'm gonna get zinc coated what stuff needs to get refresh and then other stuff like this the coil pack bracket it's going to be discarded because I'm gonna be using the PRP kit like we did my others downline the coil pack harness and all the other stuff that isn't gonna end up being used so you'll notice right off the bat one other thing we're doing different we're trying to wrap the fenders to protect the paint where we go through it I'm pulling the plugs right now I want to do compression tests before we go and fill this engine part of me is hoping that there will be some like sort of crazy mods and a lot of times these GTRs go for sale at auction and they had a built motor cams or stuff and you know they'll pull off the easy to pull off parts like gyros and stuff throw stock you see you back on it just to sell it and make some of their money back but usually leave the built engine so I doubt as one but you never know it does have these sweet and gratia spark plugs I've never seen before look at the design that's so interesting all right go for it stop did I swear every single undo we ever compression test is always 120 so he used a different one that thing is there I know every compression test is always broken as long as we have the same numbers on all cylinders I'm not worried go for it number two stop I give it to me Schulman number three all right number four coming up number five coming up I'll hold myself on that first did you see that all right she's healthy enough to be doing what we're going to be doing your dude I'm still geeking out like this is actually like a pretty clean RB just looking at all the zinc still on the fuel rail and you break any plugs on the coil packs no yeah you're right yeah they're like how clean the intake manifold on is on it but satins just how clean it looks in there usually RVs or JC's like full of oil and water and it's mainly from sitting at the jar and collecting water I will tell you guys there's been a lot of stuff going on lately about really bad imports being brought in just don't even pay attention to the mileage on cars just look for the cleanest of the engine because 99% of the cars you get over here have swapped clusters anyway it's like when I got this car you know it has a news mode cluster now it has paperwork from when it was swap you don't really know so I just compared it to a couple other ones that I looked at and you just kind of compare look for little stuff like corrosion rust wear on seats I mean even a lot of that stuff's changed just to make cars look nicer so you look for the dumb stuff that people don't change or that's a pain to change like an intake manifold or fuel rail or little lines and stuff just to get a good idea of the actual age or condition of a car just like your wife's or to that one like normal average mileage so cleaning station in the world don't you ever forget it now I'm not even sure if it's possible to actually take the engine and drivetrain out of this up through the bay I might be but we're not gonna even risk trying because when you do that it's very easy to damage either the crossmember or the firewall so we're gonna do it the way that Tommy always does it we're gonna use the table jack that we borrowed from our neighbors over at psi to basically lower out of the car with subframe front suspension and all all right going down more I say we go up with a lift until you one down with that I'll bump it slow you want to watch to make sure nothing gets caught it looks pretty evenly balanced this looks so cool doesn't it parts for wiring that is a long transmission with that transfer case oh my god that is wild-looking yeah alright so the engine is officially out kind of cool seeing it in this form a plan right now is what you will see in the next video we're gonna start to dismantle everything go through the engine bay which actually doesn't have that much stuff in it I thought it would be a lot more messy and a lot more cluttered but to get this thing ready for paint I don't know if I I don't I don't I can't remember because I've talked about this car sometimes videos originally I was like on the fence about painting it I don't care if I do value the car and make it a little less om by painting the black babe midnight purple I just know that we're gonna do a lot of really nice stuff and I want to have my bathing colors a car just for it to be aesthetically pleasing and nice so we're gonna get it ready and this thing should be pretty fun so we'll also start going over some of the parts and other sellers in the cars in the next video but you guys are excited I'm super stoked to finally pull into this and hopefully it won't be done for too longwhat's up guys welcome to today's video we are in the best car ever because the skylines the best car is like probably designed from the factory to shift around like seven or eight grand that's a pretty solid like chunky power band up there it's just a problem with 30 forces the gearing so long that you end up falling back down to here between shifts that's why a lot of people do for 11 years so they can live in this region up here and that is one thing that we're gonna do but yep good to know now we've got our baseline I'm hoping when I come back it'll be like yeah yeah yeah those are triple A's they're like 10 times wider than the car itself it's gonna be a while before I Drive this thing again but I am very very very excited to finally tear into it the last time we'll ever see this poor thing running got it so pretty so I need you to reenact you're just describing to us how it feels when you're when you're in it like some cars okay feels okay whatever but then I can get in the third floor it's just like yeah like this feels like a gut like be like this feels right it feels like a tough I don't know every 35 all right so we're gonna take a little bit of a different approach to this one thing that I want to do is really take our time when we're taking this apart bag all the little bolts and stuff and we're actually gonna do a swap with Tommy who has a lot of these bolts already zinc-coated but little things like looking through while we dismantle you know a lot of stuff we can still get new OEM like if I wanted to get a new fuse box cover or I notice in the back this little clip that holds all the brake lines is damaged so just dumb little stuff like that I can pull up parts diagrams and I can try to find some of this stuff new so when we put all back together we have fresh new parts but before we do anything I do want to just compression test engine right off the bat since we are keeping a stock bottom end just know that working with the healthy engine in case I need to overnight a short block from Japan or something eventually maybe we'll see but we got to get this hood off I think we're actually gonna saran wrap the whole car to to be safe with it we'll take this set off what do you want to do hang it so doesn't get damaged yeah I'll be kind of cool yeah the cool thing is like even though this is kind of like a foreign car to us and kind of different these sounds are kind of all the same and I've gotten pretty familiar with RVs from working on the r32 so delving into this it isn't like I'm scared or anything is really weird you're confusing I'm trying to be really organized so that this table is gonna be stuff that's gonna be reused so I know like what bolts I'm gonna get zinc coated what stuff needs to get refresh and then other stuff like this the coil pack bracket it's going to be discarded because I'm gonna be using the PRP kit like we did my others downline the coil pack harness and all the other stuff that isn't gonna end up being used so you'll notice right off the bat one other thing we're doing different we're trying to wrap the fenders to protect the paint where we go through it I'm pulling the plugs right now I want to do compression tests before we go and fill this engine part of me is hoping that there will be some like sort of crazy mods and a lot of times these GTRs go for sale at auction and they had a built motor cams or stuff and you know they'll pull off the easy to pull off parts like gyros and stuff throw stock you see you back on it just to sell it and make some of their money back but usually leave the built engine so I doubt as one but you never know it does have these sweet and gratia spark plugs I've never seen before look at the design that's so interesting all right go for it stop did I swear every single undo we ever compression test is always 120 so he used a different one that thing is there I know every compression test is always broken as long as we have the same numbers on all cylinders I'm not worried go for it number two stop I give it to me Schulman number three all right number four coming up number five coming up I'll hold myself on that first did you see that all right she's healthy enough to be doing what we're going to be doing your dude I'm still geeking out like this is actually like a pretty clean RB just looking at all the zinc still on the fuel rail and you break any plugs on the coil packs no yeah you're right yeah they're like how clean the intake manifold on is on it but satins just how clean it looks in there usually RVs or JC's like full of oil and water and it's mainly from sitting at the jar and collecting water I will tell you guys there's been a lot of stuff going on lately about really bad imports being brought in just don't even pay attention to the mileage on cars just look for the cleanest of the engine because 99% of the cars you get over here have swapped clusters anyway it's like when I got this car you know it has a news mode cluster now it has paperwork from when it was swap you don't really know so I just compared it to a couple other ones that I looked at and you just kind of compare look for little stuff like corrosion rust wear on seats I mean even a lot of that stuff's changed just to make cars look nicer so you look for the dumb stuff that people don't change or that's a pain to change like an intake manifold or fuel rail or little lines and stuff just to get a good idea of the actual age or condition of a car just like your wife's or to that one like normal average mileage so cleaning station in the world don't you ever forget it now I'm not even sure if it's possible to actually take the engine and drivetrain out of this up through the bay I might be but we're not gonna even risk trying because when you do that it's very easy to damage either the crossmember or the firewall so we're gonna do it the way that Tommy always does it we're gonna use the table jack that we borrowed from our neighbors over at psi to basically lower out of the car with subframe front suspension and all all right going down more I say we go up with a lift until you one down with that I'll bump it slow you want to watch to make sure nothing gets caught it looks pretty evenly balanced this looks so cool doesn't it parts for wiring that is a long transmission with that transfer case oh my god that is wild-looking yeah alright so the engine is officially out kind of cool seeing it in this form a plan right now is what you will see in the next video we're gonna start to dismantle everything go through the engine bay which actually doesn't have that much stuff in it I thought it would be a lot more messy and a lot more cluttered but to get this thing ready for paint I don't know if I I don't I don't I can't remember because I've talked about this car sometimes videos originally I was like on the fence about painting it I don't care if I do value the car and make it a little less om by painting the black babe midnight purple I just know that we're gonna do a lot of really nice stuff and I want to have my bathing colors a car just for it to be aesthetically pleasing and nice so we're gonna get it ready and this thing should be pretty fun so we'll also start going over some of the parts and other sellers in the cars in the next video but you guys are excited I'm super stoked to finally pull into this and hopefully it won't be done for too long\n"
