What's Up Guys? It's Lou from Unbox Therapy and Today We're Taking a Look at the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger
I finally got my hands on the Nexus 4 wireless charger, which was announced a long time ago alongside the phone. They're just now shipping these out to users, and I'm excited to share my thoughts with you all. It seems kind of strange that it's just a charger, but I've been a big fan of wireless charging for a while now. I don't necessarily think it's a game-changer like some people might make it out to be, but I do think it's a good idea to push technology in this direction.
I can picture all sorts of enabled surfaces in the future – you could have your desk enabled or something similar, where we can finally say goodbye to those annoying micro USB cables and remembering to keep our devices charged. That would be a big deal for me, especially when I have so many devices on me at any given time. And it's not like the Nexus 4 doesn't need some incentive – it doesn't exactly have the greatest battery life.
In terms of unboxing, it's pretty much what you'd expect. You'll get a micro USB cable that plugs into the charger, and that's about it. The charger itself isn't wireless; just the portion between the phone and the charger does make sense in hindsight. Let me show you what I mean by this little orb here – it's special because there hasn't been a wireless charger quite like it for a while. I guess the Touchstone from the Palm products was similar, but that's about it.
There's also a wall plug included with the charger, which is nice to have around. The micro USB cable plugs into the female micro USB port on the back of the orb, which makes sense considering its design. It does kind of remind me of the Nexus Q, although it's not identical by any means. The front side has a sticky surface to it, which I'm a bit worried about things sticking to – but it's not like it's going to be super glue or anything! It's just a little tacky and seems designed to keep your phone from sliding off when you're charging it.
Now that we've established the basics of the charger, let's talk about its functionality. The good news is that it's a Chi-enabled wireless charger, which means it should work with other Chi-enabled handsets like the new Lumia models – although you'll just have to try it out for yourself to see if it actually works.
One thing I do want to mention is that this is not a cheap wireless charger. It's definitely on the pricier side at $59.99, but I think that's justified given its unique design and added functionality. The main benefit of this charger, aside from just being able to wirelessly charge your phone, is its form factor – it allows you to place your phone down while it's charging and still have access to it, which makes a lot more sense than having it lie flat on a surface like some other wireless chargers do.
If you look closely at the angle in this picture, I think you can see what I mean by the "nice little angle" that this charger provides. It's perfect for reading tweets, answering phone calls, or even typing out emails – without your phone moving around while it's charging! And as I mentioned earlier, I'm not 100% sure if this is going to stay on my desk or nightstand, but I do know I'm a big fan of these sorts of chargers.
Overall, I think the Nexus 4 wireless charger is a great addition to any room. It may not be the cheapest option out there, but its unique design and functionality make it well worth considering if you're in the market for a new wireless charger. I've been a big fan of wireless charging for a long time not necessarily cuz I think it's such a big deal like I have to have it or anything like that but I think it's a good idea to push technology micro USB cables and having to remember to keep your devices charged that's a big deal for me especially when I have so many devices I'm carrying around and believe it or not the Nexus 4 doesn't have the greatest battery life so any incentive to charge it to place it down on an active surface is good for me so in terms of the unboxing it's pretty much what you expect you're going to have a micro USB cable that goes into the charger the charger itself of course isn't Wireless just the portion between the phone and the charger does that make any sense well I'm going to show you what I mean in a second here so this little orb here is special it's special in the sense that there really hasn't been a wireless charger quite like it for a while I guess the Touchstone that came with the Palm products was the last thing that was similar to this one there's also the wall plug that's included so the micro USB cable it plugs into the female micro USB port on the back of the or orb this thing actually kind of reminds me of the Nexus Q at least partially it it also was uh round or spherical if you will the front side actually has a kind of sticky surface to it so I'm a little worried things might stick to it it's not sticky Like Glue but just a little bit tacky and I assume that the reason here is so that your phone doesn't slide off of it when you're charging it the Nexus 4 obviously has that glass back as you'll see right here making it a good fit for the type of surface material that's on the new wireless charger now that being said the wireless charger is chi enabled so it may or may not work with other Chi enabled handsets like the new Lumia for example or others so you just have to try that out and see for yourself if that's going to function if that's going to work this is not a cheap wireless charger I do have to tell you but it does have some added functionality that I really like and most of it comes from the form factor that means that you can place the phone down and be charging it but still have access to the device and still use it on your desk in a kind of in a way that makes more sense than having it lie flat like another wireless charger that I also have on my desk which is a more generic one from LG so anyways as you can tell here it's all about the angle you get this nice little angle to work with so if you want to read your tweets if you want to answer a phone call if you want to even type out an email or something like that you can do so and as you can see the phone doesn't budge at all you do have a fairly secure fit now I don't know if the adhesive on the actual charger over time is going to become less sticky but I'm pretty excited about it right now I'm I'm not 100% sure if this is going to live on my desk or on my nightstand but I'm a big fan of these things so this one is $59.99 so that's a little bit pricey but if you're looking for a wireless charger there are cheaper options available so I'll link those down in the
