A Look at My January TBR: Books to Get Excited About
I've been thinking about my reading plans for the year and I think it's time for me to reevaluate my old books. I have a feeling this is going to be charming and funny, and really really sweet. I hope it's just one that'll kind of put a smile on my face and just be kind of an interesting change of pace for me in terms of what I generally read day to day. I've heard great things about this book, and I don't know if I want it to be like fun and charming and hopefully not too sad, but we shall see.
My next book on my list is Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. This was on my top books I want to read for the year, and I'm definitely sticking to that because I want to get to this sooner rather than later. This is a historical fiction novel following four generations of a proud immigrant family as they fight for control of their destinies. Exiled from a land that they've never actually been to, this is set in the turn of the century, and it follows a Korean family through multiple different perspectives.
I've heard excellent things about this book, and I'm just really excited to pick it up again. I want to read more historical fiction this year, so I'm hoping to start with this and branch out to some other stories as well. But this is also on my TBR. Then the last two books in Theory feel like shouldn't be too much of a surprise, as there are other really important books that I want to get to. The first one is A Sky Beyond the Storm by Saba Tahir, the fourth and final book to The Ember in the Ashes series. I have been dying to get to this since it's come out in December and it's just I didn't have time in December and then I had a bit of a reading slump so I feel like if I pick this book up in the early parts of this month, I'm hoping it'll just like bring me back into the reading spirit.
I love this series - the dual perspective, angsty romances, inspired military focus, magic, adventure, and wonderful writing and character work. The first three books absolutely enthralled me, I was so entertained, and I'm really excited to see how the fourth installment kind of wraps up the entire series. I've heard great things about it so far, so I have very high expectations but I don't know if I'm thrilled about this - I just feel like this will be like really captivating and a page-turner and I feel like it's one that once I pick it up, I won't be able to put it down.
Another book from the top 10 books I want to read this year is definitely my most hefty and that is Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. The reread that has eluded me for months - I'm technically 200 pages into this book already, um so I'll probably start from there. I just recently read that but I want to finish this and then move on to the second and third book hopefully in the months of February and March maybe April - really just want to knock out this reread as quickly as possible because I do really want to pick up Rhythm of War before too much time passes, and then so I can also focus on some other longer fantasy series in the second half of this year.
I obviously really love this book, so I feel like I'm gonna really enjoy this reread. But this is the first book to The Epic Stormlight Archives - it's multi-pov and it's sort of set on the Theater of endless war there's magic and magical weapons, and you follow different perspectives from different kinds of sides conflicts and power dynamics all around a young girl who's trying to turn the tides of her family's fortune by kind of becoming a spy and also a scholar, an assassin who weeps as he kills a prince who's learning about the ancient past and also a surgeon who's forced to forsake that and become a soldier. It is very intense - each book kind of focuses on one primary pov but there's obviously a lot of characters and plot points sort of circling around this entire thing, it has Brandon Sanderson's wonderful writing and just plotting, I'm excited for this as I keep saying, but yeah this is definitely a major priority for me in the early parts of this year.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eneveryone it's regan and welcome back to another video today i'm gonna be doing my january tbr and in full transparency i have quite the hodgepodge of books kind of collected here because i won't lie in the past two weeks i've actually been in quite the reading slump i haven't been able to figure out what it is i feel like reading but obviously it's the beginning of the year so i'm trying to hope that'll revitalize my reading spirit because generally speaking january is always one of my favorite months to read i always find it so much fun to put together my first tbr of the year kind of think about the goals i want to have and kind of construct the perfect tbr this month's is again all over the place but i am excited to read so many of these books i have together so without further ado let's go ahead and dive right into the books themselves so the first one is a carryover actually from december as i wasn't able to read it and it's still definitely one that i have my eye on and that is these violent delights by chloe gong this is a romeo and juliet retelling but it centers on two crime families set in shanghai during the 20s it just sounds like it's going to be a really great dark atmospheric why a tale with lots of drama i'm hoping there's an angsty romance i also am just kind of intrigued to see this reimagining of romeo and juliet but kind of making it a more modern crime setting i'm obviously also a huge fan of the green bone saga which is another crime family focused story so i'm kind of looking for that anywhere and everywhere so i'm hoping this kind of provides a new and interesting twist on a well-known tale and story and i just i don't know 20s shanghai crime family say no more because i've been slumpy these past couple of weeks i wanted to have a few books on my tbr that are in kind of a genre sweet spot to me that is a sort of fairy tale atmospheric bizarre kind of story setting like short books that either have a light sprinkling a fantasy or it's entirely fantasy that just kind of has like folklore atmosphere at its heart the first one on my list is the girl who circumnavigated fairyland in a ship of her own making by kathryn m valente i've actually read this book years and years and years ago and it was one i really enjoyed there's actually a lot of books within this particular middle grade series and i want to read more of them so i gotta reread the first one to get there and this just sounds like a weird but beautifully written middle grade tale this follows our main character september who has always longed for adventure so when she's invited to fairyland she quickly accepts but when she arrives she realizes this land is actually quite overthrown with turmoil and it's up to her to save it this is a story i've heard amazing things about the writing style just the quality of it is really transportive and also kind of classic so i feel like this is one i'm going to really really enjoy and i'm also just in general excited to check out more books by this author and this series this year from there i also have the midnight library by matt haig this is another book i've heard really great things about i feel like it's really popular especially on the tail end of last year this is another peculiar human focused fantasy story that really caught my eye this is a story that essentially follows our main character nora and she wakes up in a library between life and death and she would define her life as being one full of misery and heartache and in general she would say she is not very happy with how her life has unfolded this library however allows her to look at different moments of her life and see what would happen if she made different changes kind of i think making her confront her actual life and making her realize that maybe she needs to seize what is currently in front of her i'm not sure i hear this is a really beautiful and whimsical kind of bizarre tale about life and choices and all of those things i really love this concept of this library that exists between life and death it's also a short book so i'm hoping it's one that i'll be able to read really quickly i definitely want to get to this this month as well then the last sort of magical folklore inspired story i have is gods of jade and shadow by sylvia morano garcia this is a book that i have been wanting to read for months it's on this tbr for a reason a story inspired by mexican folklore and it's set during the jazz age this follows our main character cassipia whose dreams of a more exciting life than the one she currently has in her small town she's too busy to enjoy the music of this era and instead spends most of her time cleaning her wealthy grandfather's home one day she stumbles upon a mysterious box in her grandfather's office and she opens it and accidentally releases the mayan god of death and then she sort of sweeped away on an adventure to help him like reclaim his throne and defeat his brother's treachery i'm hoping this has an absolutely captivating writing style again folklore inspired stories are some of my favorite and i haven't actually read many inspired by mexican folklore or mind mythology so this really called out to me i've also heard again excellent things i'm really trying to like hedge my bets this month and picking books i know other people have loved in the hopes that it will kind of respark my reading spirit but yeah this is my last sort of magical and atmospheric fantasy pick for the month a man called ove by frederick bachmann this i feel like is like one of the most beloved books ever i feel like people are constantly telling me to read this people love this author like no matter what genre is the one you generally primarily read everyone has also read frederick bachman and has also loved his books and i figured i think this is his most popular and well-known so i thought it might make sense to start here but let me know if that's not the case i have a few other of his books as well this follows our main character of who is kind of perceived as the grumpiest old man in this town and area he doesn't really understand why people perceive him as grumpy nor does he understand why everyone feels the need to be smiling and talking and chatting all this time and he also does not understand why people can't simply follow the rules and keep their neighborhood orderly clean and without too much noise at the beginning of this book he's kind of ousted from being the chairman of like the neighborhood association his well-ordered and solitary life is thrown upside down when two new neighbors move in next door bringing with them to young and boisterous girls and so begins i think a reevaluation of an old man's life and just probably becoming close with the neighborhood family and these two young girls and i have a feeling this is going to be charming and funny and really really sweet and i hope it's just one that'll kind of put a smile on my face and just be kind of an interesting change of pace for me in terms of what i generally read day to day i've heard great things about this and i don't know i want it to be like fun and charming and hopefully not too sad but we shall see next book on my tbr is pachinko by min jen lee this was on my top books i want to read for the year and i'm
