The Toyota Tundra: A Full-Sized Pickup Like No Other

At one point, the Toyota Tundra was an unlikely competitor in the Detroit-dominated full-sized pickup arena, but since its complete makeover in 2007, it has really earned its place in the big leagues. Hi, I'm Vanessa Lee and I'm Beth L, and you're watching Auto Trader's used car review of the 2007 through 2010 Toyota Tundra.

This capable half-ton pickup can easily hold and handle a load of camping gear over the weekend or comfortably transport your family during the week, it sure can. It comes in many configurations, starting with the cab – there's the extended, regular, or crew cab. It also comes in an 8ft bed or 7ft bed, and two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. And, of course, plenty of trim to choose from. In fact, there are lots of choices starting with 31 variations in 2007. For the luxury-minded, Toyota added the Platinum package in 2010, and there's a V6 and two V8s to choose from.

So, no matter what your needs are, there's a Toyota Tundra there for you. We're going to check out this limited edition 2010 TRD Pro since 2008 power bucket seats have come standard in most four-wheel drive Crewmax and double cab models. The other models are outfitted with the split fold pickup bench seat and limited trims like this one, which get all of the luxury treatment they get – dual zone climate control, heated power front seats, and a 440 W JBL surround sound system.

When you're shopping for a later model, it's worth it to check out the optional navigation system and the rear backup camera. And, it's really comfortable in here – let's see how comfortable it is on the road. The 236 horsepower 4.0 L V6 is what powers the stock regular cab Tundra, it's a very capable engine as long as you stick to the lighter duties. Any heavy hauling or towing, you really want to leave that up to the V8s – right? With the 2007 to 2009 models, that means either a 271 horsepower 4.7 L or a 381 horsepower 5.7 L V8.

Now, in 2010 Toyota replaced the 4.7 L with a more efficient and more powerful 310 horsepower 4.6 L V8, which gets 14 MP gallon in the city and 19 on the highway with a four-wheel drive. The 4.0 L V6 is slightly better with 15 City and 19 Highway on Surface roads. And, when you take it off-road, the Tundra actually has shift-on-the-fly for four-wheel drive capabilities with enough suspension to really handle well on rough terrain. Stability control and four-wheel antilock brakes are a really nice plus.

However, there is that Toyota issue with the sticking gas pedal – all 2007 through 2010 Tundras do have a recall to address the problem, so you want to make sure that's addressed before you buy the new one. And, 2007 and 2010 models both experienced issues with the drive shaft yolk – that was in the four-wheel drive models, so you want to double-check that with your mechanic before you purchase.

Overall, the 2007 to 2010 Tundra models have excellent service and repair reports and they compare really well to the Ford F-150 Chevy Silverado among other makes. Be sure to check out the long bed double cab Tundra SR5 for the most versatility. And, no matter which Tundra you choose, you're going to get great resale value and outstanding reliability in one really cool machine.
