I've Had No Luck Fixing This Problem with My SLS Black Series!

### Article: Back at the Nürburgring with Shmee: SLS Black Series Repairs, GT8 Departure, and More

#### Introduction

Shmee is back at the iconic **Nürburgring** circuit, but this time, the weather isn't cooperating. In traditional mountain fashion, the day is miserable—cold, wet, and grim—with the track closed for the time being. Despite the poor conditions, Shmee has some exciting news to share.

#### Weather Update

The Nürburgring, known for its challenging and unpredictable weather, once again lives up to its reputation. Today, it’s cold, wet, and overcast, making driving conditions treacherously slippery. The track remains closed, adding to the sense of frustration for any car enthusiast hoping to get some behind-the-wheel time.

#### Repairs on the SLS Black Series

Shmee recently dropped off his **SLS Black Series** at Rentec Europe to address a few issues that needed attention. These included:

1. **Replacing the front splitter**: Shmee had taken it out yet again while driving through the demanding **Carousel section** of the Nordschleife.

2. **Fixing the reversing camera**: It had stopped working, leaving Shmee without a crucial tool for navigating tight spaces and parking.

3. **Installing a new carbon-tastic steering wheel**: Shmee opted for a custom steering wheel from Carbon-Tastic, designed to match the SLS’s interior.

All these repairs have now been completed, and Shmee is eager to showcase the results.

#### New Steering Wheel Details

The highlight of this visit is undoubtedly the new **Carbon-Tastic steering wheel**. Designed to mimic the look of Mercedes-AMG’s newer models (like the **AMG GTR Pro**), the steering wheel features:

- Black Alcantara with red contrast stitching.

- Gloss carbon fiber accents on the spokes and central pieces.

- Extended carbon fiber shift paddles, which add both style and functionality.

Shmee admits that this is a controversial modification but feels it suits his SLS perfectly. However, the journey to get it working wasn’t smooth. Initially, the paddle shifters weren’t functional due to software issues. After some trial and error, including swapping out chips, the problem was resolved, and now everything works as intended.

#### Issues with the Steering Wheel

Despite the successful installation, Shmee encountered another issue while demonstrating the steering wheel’s functionality. The car locked up, leaving him unable to control the dashboard or infotainment system. After some trial and error (including locking and unlocking the car repeatedly), it became clear that disconnecting the battery was the only way to reset the system temporarily.

This experience left Shmee frustrated, as he had hoped to take the SLS for a drive. He humorously wondered if the issue might be related to the steering wheel’s software or ECUs (Electronic Control Units). For now, it seems like the best solution is to revert to the original steering wheel until a more permanent fix can be found.

#### GT8 Departure

While Shmee was at Rentec Europe, he also had to address the **GT8**’s return journey. The car, which has been on the road for quite some time, needed to be loaded onto a transporter and sent back home. Before its departure, Shmee mentioned that it would be borrowed by his father for the next couple of months. It will also undergo its fourth annual service early in the new year.

#### Interesting Encounters at the Nürburgring

Despite the poor weather, Shmee managed to spot a few interesting cars during his time at the circuit. He saw an **AMG GT4** with some camo livery, which he believes might be a hybrid version of the car (possibly the AMG 73s or 63e). Mercedes-AMG has been spotted testing several new models around the track recently, making it a hotbed for automotive enthusiasts.

#### Reflections on Driving

Shmee expressed his love for driving the **SLS Black Series**, calling it his go-to dynamic grand touring car. He compared it to the **GT8**, which he’s been driving for the past few weeks. While the GT8 offers more luggage space and practicality, the SLS feels more engaging and exciting.

#### Conclusion

Although today wasn’t without its frustrations—especially with the steering wheel issues—Shmee remains optimistic. He’s grateful for the repairs completed on his SLS and looks forward to future adventures behind the wheel. Despite the wet and slippy conditions, he couldn’t resist taking the SLS out for a short drive, showcasing just how much he cherishes this iconic car.

In closing, Shmee thanks his audience for their continued support and promises more exciting content in the near future. Even though today’s video was somewhat random, he hopes you enjoyed it nonetheless.

Until next time, stay tuned for more thrilling automotive adventures with Shmee!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys i'm shmee hello and welcome back to the channel where you join me today back at the nurburgring where in traditional life or mountains fashion the weather today is super miserable it is cold it is wet it is grim and of course that means the track is closed however i do have some good news so a couple of weeks ago when i was last here i dropped off my sls black series here at rentec europe to resolve a couple of things that were needing to be sorted out namely installing the new carbon-tastic steering wheel fixing the reversing camera which had stopped working and replacing the front splitter that i'd yet again taken out basically driving through the carousel on the nordschleife well today all of those have been completed i'm going to show you what the new steering wheel is like take it for a drive which i cannot wait for but before that happens the gt8 is ending its adventure it's going to be transported back home i need to load it up it's going to be heading back to be borrowed by my dad for the next couple of months before in the early new year it will have its fourth year annual service amazing to think it's been that long already a fantastic machine for the journey plus i'm hoping we might spot some interesting stuff around the nurburgring area a little bit later on so let's get things sorted out go see how the sls is doing take it out for a drive and let's get cracking on to be honest i feel a little bit guilty sending the gt8 home quite this dirty it will need to be valid as soon as it arrives at the other end but with today's weather it would be completely pointless to try and clean this up just look how dirty that brembo brake caliper is completely covered in filth and grime as are the wheels now before it's loaded i will need to take off the front splitters again they make it a little bit too low to get it into transporters easily because of course the car doesn't have a front lift system i've actually been taking them on and off quite a bit on this tour to get the car into hotel garages it's also been loaded up with a few things they're going to be taken back because this has been a long time now on the road so let's get that sorted out but i think firstly let's go take a cheeky quick look at the sls inside the workshop in some spectacular company then as always we've got the satin cruise brand new facelift lci version of the bmw m5 competition satin crew of course in satin black that thing is a beast and the sls just look at it i cannot wait to get this back on the road for the next few legs of this adventure in fact let me come through a little bit it's locked at the moment the handles are tucked in but we have the new steering wheel we'll be checking that out and i guess we're going to get a cold start which always sounds absolutely ridiculous to get it back on outside for this car i always think it's spectacular very very excited to drive it again although as i said i believe the transporter is about to arrive so probably step one get the gt8 loaded then we'll come back to the sls that big sounds like a monster the titanium exhaust it's still hard to believe that's the stock component tree of course when you start driving it would have the valve control normally and we have a switch although it's actually operating right at this moment in normal behavior mode that was a homologated exhaust i remember at the time how much i was talking about this thing just sounding absurdly ridiculous and well it completely does shout out here to the team at propex transport based in germany who are very kindly taking this back to the uk for me in safe hands in the covered transporter of course i won't see it for quite a while now just like that it's in perfect the gt8 is now on the move and back inside the sls is in some pretty epic company as always alongside the saturn cruise m5 competition lci sitting right underneath rentec europe's a45s which i actually drove back in summer there's a pretty awesome thing to get about in but i'll tell you what that feels like an eternity ago now we've also got a few other projects the c63s and things being worked on and then under the covers the amg gt3 race car as well that i experienced my fastest ever passenger ride on the nurburgring launch library in that exact car but let's talk about this and in particular the new carbontastic steering wheel so when i was here a couple of weeks ago we did the test fit where it looked absolutely fantastic but unfortunately didn't have all of the functionality the paddle shifters weren't working now what you have to remember is that carbontastic are producing the new mercedes amg oem steering wheels and back dating them into the older cars so there's a bit of trial and error involved in terms of the chips in terms of the software and making sure it all works properly we tried out a couple but we were still lacking the paddle shifters even though we had full control of the dashboard and the infotainment well they very promptly sent out another chip which the guys here have installed and it is all now working exactly as it should and i cannot wait to drive it so i do now have the keys in a moment i will be taking it out in fact before that we are going to have a rather fantastic thunderous cold start out of this thing it will remind me of the time i actually collected it right after having the r1 package installed and will sound no doubt incredible but let's come through then and take a look at what we have in here with the new carbontastic wheel the original oem style from the amg gtr pro for example and completely matched to the inside of this car now i know it's a big controversial move to make this change but i really really like the steering wheel and personally i feel like it suits especially in this configuration it suits the interior of this car fantastically so i've gone for the black alcantara which matches with the lower dashboard with the central tunnel with the seat inserts with the door cards then finished with the red cross stitch around the inside and around the air bag cover which again matches with the contrast red stitching that we have around we've got the gloss carbon fibre for the central pieces and the spokes which matches exactly with the gloss carbon fiber through the central tunnel like the original steering wheel which i'll show you in a moment and you won't believe how dated it looks in comparison we've got the red leather 12 o'clock marking stripe up at the top we've also for a bit of fun got the m150 logo down at the bottom plus the gloss black inserts here for the button surrounds which match with the gloss black you have on the air conditioning vent surrounds as well so completely fitting the purpose we've got the extended carbon fiber shift paddles as well slightly longer than standard ones that the car has which are more like i guess buttons on the back because this was well i guess the car's about seven years old now at that time they weren't quite into extended shift paddles that's all something that's really arrived on the scene since all the carbon fiber tying in very nicely but let's climb in and um i guess let's start it up and enjoy the sounds of this because as we know this car always sounds totally ridiculous so um yeah let's have a little listen i had almost forgotten how ridiculous it is i had genuinely forgotten those cracks and snaps and bubbles from it that is mega that is okay 2000 rpm never sounded so good do you know what i might keep this off until we're ready to take it outside look at how many kilometers i've done now quickly racking those up so with the ignition awake there we go light it back up we have these touch panels which if you scroll up and down go through the various screens you can see range to empty from reset from start and the trip and if you go left to right you've got trip navi audio tell access to a few other bits of information that's on the left side and the right side does exactly the same yeah up through the different settings using the touch panels which would otherwise be controlling infotainment on the more updated system then you have the volume which i guess at the moment oh well obviously the radio is not on we would need to one press for power one press for ignition wake it all up properly then you have the volume control now a few people might be wondering about this the cruise control is the one thing that doesn't work because in this generation of cars that's the cruise control and obviously you're not going to take away the stalk um it would maybe be a dream world if both worked but it's kind of understandable that this car doesn't have the era of adaptive crews so those are slightly defunct but what else are you going to replace them with so we have volume yeah it's exactly any signal at the moment so that works fine i think all is always good on that front sounds so cool i guess in a moment then we'll be uh we'll be taking it out probably not quite yet so maybe i should leave it shut off just for a second but um oh wait hold on hold on hold on hold on that's not um not doing what it should okay there we go needs the ignition on and then we are good to go frustratingly we have a problem something is not exactly working as it should let me try and demonstrate this so the car is currently locked it has been sitting for a moment of course we've had a bit of trial and error to demonstrate what i am about to show you but if i unlock it and go back inside to effectively go back to the steering wheel as if we were starting from the beginning turn it on it goes to the from start trip display and then we have no control i don't know if the paddles are working but basically the only way to reset this back is to disconnect the battery in the bonnet and start over and then it works again but we only get one or two tries on each successive go before all the controls basically go dead so i would assume that the shift paddles probably are dead as well but i'm not gonna drive it uh to find out even if i then start it up just in case you're questioning this still nothing from either touch pad it's like it's forcing this from start display um i don't know what to do at this stage i really don't know what to do i am basically hopping back and forth in and out locking unlocking trial and error testing everything leave it for a moment and unfortunately we don't seem to be having great success with this as you can see not working so i think i think at the moment we're probably gonna have to take this out which stresses me greatly as you can imagine because i was hoping to take the car away with that sorted um obviously with the time zones it's the afternoon here it is currently three o'clock so the guy is over in california it is 6 a.m so i'm not expecting to get a message back right now but alas i do need to head out yeah i'm a bit bummed out i was really quite looking forward to that after coming back to see it and obviously it working first time around it's it's a bit bizarre but it must be it must be to do with ecu in the steering wheel it must be to do with the software the configuration the computers because if you reset them maybe there's something we're missing but at the moment it feels like we're gonna have to do battery off airbag out swap the wheel put the old one back on or airbag back in battery back on and depart which is not not how we wanted today to go to be honest that's now be swap back again something we didn't expect to do quite so many times but it's not all bad news the other two things that the car was here for have been rectified so down at the front it has this new plastic splitter protector which is just to protect the carbon fiber because that's excruciatingly expensive that is fortunately very cheap it's easy to replace but basically what happens because we have a gigantic naturally aspirated engine up front there's a lot of weight up front and when you go around the left-hand corners on the nurburgring i think in particular the carousel with its concrete slabs that ends up basically bouncing off the ground so no doubt next season i'm going to end up needing another one of those the other thing was the replacement of the reversing camera which was basically just showing us a black screen and it was in fact damaged inside when it was taken off the guys could see that the new part was required that was quite expensive considering it's made exclusively for this car but at least now it works at least in theory it works and of course we now have the original steering wheel back in which in comparison does look so dated i have to say i really like the new wheels and the way that they look just a big shame that we weren't able to to get it working but let's just show you actually let's start quickly still sounds awesome and then when we go into reverse when it's woken up i think just in a moment oh we've got the radio on pop it into reverse we get a reversing camera this is working i think we're parked slightly diagonally but yeah not ideal not ideal in more positive news though we will slide the car out obviously when it's lined up correctly we will see the reversing camera straight as well but it's great to have that back because this car doesn't actually have any parking sensors nothing on the front nothing on the rear at all um so you kind of rely on that because it's very hard to actually work out where the thing is i feel sorry for gabrielle who's just maneuvered it out into the very inclement weather that we have today i had planned to be driving on the nordschleifer alas some things don't go as intended it's definitely one of those days with things just being frustrating not being what i intended them to be in any case though even though it's wet and slippy i'm going out for a drive with this i was just about ready to go and driving right past us was an amg gt4 door with some camo which i am absolutely certain will be the new hybrid 800 horsepower or something version of it which might be called the 73s or it might be the 63e i think they're still deciding what the names are actually going to be for that car but very cool nonetheless to see mercedes and amg are actually around here an awful lot with cars at the moment i've been seeing quite a few gt black series around and about i had hoped we might be able to catch one literally heading right past here but with today's weather the doom and the gloom it hasn't been the case although there are always very interesting things around and about you never know what you're going to see when you are in this area during some of the industry pool and the testing sessions but i tell you what it feels very very good to be back at the wheel of the sls black series because of how much mileage i've been doing with this recently it's almost become my default go-to dynamic grand touring driving experience it's what i have in my mind as this is the benchmark it's been interesting driving the gt8 as well for the last couple of weeks because that car has so much more luggage space it's actually with the hatch at the rear got an unbelievable amount of ability to just squeeze things in that you don't necessarily expect driving like this this car though is actually a little bit more relaxing auto gearbox the dual clutch and actually when you're not really on it in the sls it's not crazy crazy loud obviously as we know if i turn it to manual and we are manually shifting with the paddles things get a little bit mental as we actually know very well and i'm gonna be careful because yeah even there a little bit slippy wow do you know what getting back into this car even i mean it hasn't been that long since i last drove it it still just feels like i don't know like being a kid playing with a new toy you really have to watch out around here though when it gets a little bit greasy everything gets so slippery and just look at how foggy it is kind of mysterious actually you should be driving around the on the woods of the eiffel mountains in these kind of conditions the thing with this car is it has so many different characters you don't need to be driving crazy fast or crazy aggressive you still have a whole lot of fun with it just even at this kind of pace feeling the slide from the rear wheels that just want to break loose a little bit and the front's on the steering i mean yeah traction fully lit up only fully fully lit up worth having it for the safety net hey anyway today has been a bit of a funny one i'm not gonna lie i'm pleased to have a reversing camera back because that makes life a lot less stressful for parking the car and garages all over the place i'm pleased to have that front splitter fixed because i didn't like how it was hanging off very frustrated that the steering wheel was not to be that fitting the carbontastic wheel did not come out with the successful result we were hoping for i'll speak to the guys when there are maybe maybe we'll find a way that we can make it happen and try for round three but realistically i think it's quite unlikely this car is gonna be heading back to the uk soon and i can't keep putting the steering wheel and swap over and over each time obviously it's unfair on the guys having to do the same work on repeat and it racks up the builds quite quickly as well as you can probably imagine so we will have to um see what the future holds for that for now i will continue on my way thank you very much for watching guys as always i appreciate your support an awful lot i'm sorry for the quite random errand vlog that it's been in a way but i hope you've enjoyed it nonetheless for today though that is all i'll see you again very soon cheers youhi guys i'm shmee hello and welcome back to the channel where you join me today back at the nurburgring where about ready to go and driving right past us was an amg gt4 door with some camo which i am absolutely certain will be the new hybrid 800 horsepower or something version of it which might be called the 73s or it might be the 63e i think they're still deciding what the names are actually going to be for that car but very cool nonetheless to see mercedes and amg are actually around here an awful lot with cars at the moment i've been seeing quite a few gt black series around and about i had hoped we might be able to catch one literally heading right past here but with today's weather the doom and the gloom it hasn't been the case although there are always very interesting things around and about you never know what you're going to see when you are in this area during some of the industry pool and the testing sessions but i tell you what it feels very very good to be back at the wheel of the sls black series because of how much mileage i've been doing with this recently it's almost become my default go-to dynamic grand touring driving experience it's what i have in my mind as this is the benchmark it's been interesting driving the gt8 as well for the last couple of weeks because that car has so much more luggage space it's actually with the hatch at the rear got an unbelievable amount of ability to just squeeze things in that you don't necessarily expect driving like this this car though is actually a little bit more relaxing auto gearbox the dual clutch and actually when you're not really on it in the sls it's not crazy crazy loud obviously as we know if i turn it to manual and we are manually shifting with the paddles things get a little bit mental as we actually know very well and i'm gonna be careful because yeah even there a little bit slippy wow do you know what getting back into this car even i mean it hasn't been that long since i last drove it it still just feels like i don't know like being a kid playing with a new toy you really have to watch out around here though when it gets a little bit greasy everything gets so slippery and just look at how foggy it is kind of mysterious actually you should be driving around the on the woods of the eiffel mountains in these kind of conditions the thing with this car is it has so many different characters you don't need to be driving crazy fast or crazy aggressive you still have a whole lot of fun with it just even at this kind of pace feeling the slide from the rear wheels that just want to break loose a little bit and the front's on the steering i mean yeah traction fully lit up only fully fully lit up worth having it for the safety net hey anyway today has been a bit of a funny one i'm not gonna lie i'm pleased to have a reversing camera back because that makes life a lot less stressful for parking the car and garages all over the place i'm pleased to have that front splitter fixed because i didn't like how it was hanging off very frustrated that the steering wheel was not to be that fitting the carbontastic wheel did not come out with the successful result we were hoping for i'll speak to the guys when there are maybe maybe we'll find a way that we can make it happen and try for round three but realistically i think it's quite unlikely this car is gonna be heading back to the uk soon and i can't keep putting the steering wheel and swap over and over each time obviously it's unfair on the guys having to do the same work on repeat and it racks up the builds quite quickly as well as you can probably imagine so we will have to um see what the future holds for that for now i will continue on my way thank you very much for watching guys as always i appreciate your support an awful lot i'm sorry for the quite random errand vlog that it's been in a way but i hope you've enjoyed it nonetheless for today though that is all i'll see you again very soon cheers you\n"
