**The Importance of Critical Discourse in Fandom**
When it comes to discussing our favorite books and series, many of us tend to get caught up in defending them from criticism. However, as fans, we should be embracing critical discourse rather than dismissing it out of hand. The problem arises when fans who are overly invested in a particular series or character begin to dismiss anyone who points out flaws or criticisms.
**A Personal Experience with Book Series**
I recall reading a series that I thoroughly enjoyed, but had some issues with the main character and her relationships with other characters. As someone who is not afraid to express their opinions, I felt compelled to point out these flaws. Unfortunately, this made me aware of my own biases as a reader. Upon reflection, I realized that I was writing from a place of privilege and lack of critical thinking skills. The main character's voice and dialogue came across as shallow and stereotypical, and her relationships with other characters were problematic.
**The Problem with Authorial Privilege**
One of the most significant issues with fandom is authorial privilege. When a series is written by an author who is from a different cultural background or has a different life experience than the main character, it can lead to inaccuracies and stereotypes. For example, if a white male author writes about a female protagonist without consulting women or seeking feedback, it can result in a shallow and unrealistic portrayal of the main character. This lack of representation can be alienating for readers who identify with the character's experiences.
**The Importance of Critical Thinking**
As fans, we should strive to think critically about the stories we love. We should ask ourselves questions like: "Is this character development realistic?" "Are these relationships healthy and respectful?" "Does this portrayal of [insert topic here] align with my own experiences?" By engaging in critical thinking, we can gain a deeper understanding of the themes and messages presented in the series.
**The Value of Constructive Criticism**
Constructive criticism is essential to the growth and improvement of any creative work. When fans point out flaws or criticisms, it provides an opportunity for authors to reflect on their craft and make changes. This process allows us to see the series in a new light and appreciate its complexities. By engaging with constructive criticism, we can develop our own critical thinking skills and become better readers.
**Toxicity in Fandom**
Unfortunately, some fans can be toxic when it comes to criticizing their favorite series or characters. They may dismiss anyone who points out flaws as "not being a real fan" or imply that they are somehow less invested in the story because of their criticisms. This kind of behavior is not only unfair but also stifles discussion and creativity.
**The Power of Critical Discourse**
Critical discourse can be a powerful tool for growth and improvement, both for fans and authors alike. By embracing critical thinking and constructive criticism, we can foster a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of the stories we love. We should celebrate our differences and engage in respectful discussions, even when it comes to our favorite series or characters.
**Conclusion**
As fans, we have the power to shape the way we discuss and interpret the stories we love. By embracing critical discourse and constructive criticism, we can develop a deeper understanding of the themes and messages presented in the series. We should strive to think critically about the stories we love, and engage with others in respectful and open-minded discussions.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys it's Sam and today I want to do a book chat on loving something and still being able to discuss its flaws this is something that I talk about a lot on Tumblr it's like my favorite discourse of all time it's just what I love to discuss because I find that especially on places that are really big based in fandom like Tumblr you have this rabid fan thing where you're not allowed to say anything bad about something you love because that makes you a bad fan and you will be criticized if like oh I you just don't appreciate it as much as I do and all this stuff if you say something bad about something that's really well-loved and there are a lot of very popular massive fandoms on Tumblr not just with books but with everything which I'm going to talk about it in like an everything way but I found this very commonly with a couple of different book fandoms which is why I wanted to discuss this and just because I do get different kinds of comments and stuff relating to different books that I don't like or books that I do like but still discuss their flaws because I think that's important especially as a reviewer to discuss the flaws of something even if you love it that's why like even on books that I really really enjoy I'm still like okay I'm willing to say like this thing even though it didn't bother me could bother other people etc etc I don't want to get off track because there's a lot to talk about this I'm like excited about it it's like one of my favorite things to discuss about like books and critiquing books and stuff is like being able to just criticize things that you love so like I said there is something about fandom and attaching yourself and your identity to a thing that you love whether it be a book a TV show a particular character where you cannot possibly hear anything bad about them because it's like a deep insult to yourself that's why you see a lot of disclaimers on book or really anywhere as far as reviews and stuff where people are like this is just my opinion and I'm not saying anything and because people get so offended if you insult their faith and believe me I've been there I used to be there a lot and I still have moments where like if you insult my absolutely favorite character I'm like why did you come in my house and do that like because if someone's coming at you then it's more of like a why are you here and doing that but if somebody has legitimately reasons for not liking a certain character like I've heard people say for example that Alina starov my precious baby Queen of the chishan trilogy is like cold and they don't like her character they find her annoying and whiny and I'm like okay I admit that like there's the way she's written maybe you interpret it that way I happen to love her and it's okay because you're not insulting me you're not saying anything about me by saying you hate my favorite character but I feel like a lot of people especially if you don't really think about about it you're like I love this character and if you think this character is stupid then you must think I'm stupid and it's like that's not what anyone is saying but with fandoms and with this kind of like current and vacuum black hole of just like we only have to be positive about this thing and we can warp everything that somebody says as negative into a positive about this thing like it becomes very toxic and I see a lot of it with different fandoms on Tumblr on book in the ya Community a lot because the ya Community which is why I love it gets really into an invest vested in different series and fandoms and characters and stuff and we're so passionate about it and I love that about us but at the same time it can start to get very like not Sinister because that sounds like way over the top but it can be very like combative and argumentative and that's when like ship Wars happen which have been happening for like I know plenty of years before even why was a thing but it's a very big thing now especially with certain fandoms and I wish that we could get to a point where it's okay to talk about things that you love and you love a lot you can still say when get mad about that like that is totally valid that shouldn't have happened and that's really icky why did that happen that's messed up we also have barely any diversity in that show there are a ton of people in that show and a lot of different characters and the majority all of the main characters are white and there is very little lgbtq plus representation and there are two characters in that show who are lesbian later on in the series but one of them is the barrier gaze Trope and the other one technically should have been called bisexual but she's not I could go on with Buffy but again not doesn't doesn't exist by our rules and social standards so why do we have no people of color or very few and nobody on the lgbtq plus Spectrum why I I don't know why I don't know it doesn't make any sense and again I love Accord Miss and fuy it's one of my favorite books of the whole year I adore it but again the series it's a part of is not without its flaws and the author that created it is not without her flaws because she's a human being and it happens but I hate how so much of it is pushed under the rug because oh it's like the best series ever and it means much to me that's fine it can the face one time like and you're like no it's fine like be willing to discuss things with people in a nice way and be like oh yeah you know that's problematic I know about shipping problematic things and being like okay this is out of character or whatever you don't have to excuse everything and be like oh no it's without fault like these are the faults Miss born one of my favorite series that I finished this year again I think it's an amazing fantasy series I love everything about it and a lot of it is so Flawless and it's woven together beautifully but Vin as a main character is written really poorly she's written by a white dude and you can definitely tell and again I'm sure he's gotten better as books have gone on I haven't been able to tell yet cuz I haven't read any more of his books but like that's a perfect series to me and I don't like the main character and I don't like who the main character is with like I don't really like the two main protagonists in that series I still like it but like I can say if someone's like oh Vin is written really shitty I'm like yeah she is she's written by a dude and you can definitely tell I can go on and on with a bunch of different series I mean there's so many series that I love that have issues and there are some series that like even I have a hard time pointing out flaws for like the G Trilogy for example someone could come at me and be like here's the flaw of the G Trilogy be like you know like I didn't even see that really because I am so like in love with it that I can't even really see that flaw or I can say like I disagree with you but like like I totally think like your complaint is valid again not everybody reads book super critically or like you can read a book through a first time think it's like Flawless and wonderful and think about it for a little bit and be like oh wait there's some issues or somebody can come up to you and be like hey this and this and this was really shitty and you're like oh yeah that's good but when some when someone comes up to you and it's like oh there's this issue and you're like no no that doesn't ex no it doesn't exist that's when I have a problem and that's how it becomes just kind of so toxic with fan being like if you say anything bad about this particular series or this character whatever you're not a real fan you're not a big of a fan as as I am and I'm I'm the best fan and it's like there's no competition as far as fans it's fine and you can love something and point out and talk about its faults and if anything I think that makes you a better fan critical of things and being able to like fully digest and discuss something that you love like if anything you're going to get a deeper appreciation of that story and that series and that character and everything else when you can like see that it's a fully fleshed out thing with problems because we as humans have issues plenty of them so I encourage you in the future when you are trying to protect your faves to be protective of them obviously I have plenty of faves I done a whole video about like all the faves that I protect but like be willing to discuss with somebody as long as you're not being combative and being mean and being awful like it you know takes to a Tango on a respect level but if somebody is coming at you and being like hey this thing that this thing that you love did is really hurtful to me or I think is really crappy like you can discuss that with somebody and it doesn't make you a bad fan and it doesn't make them a bad fan and you don't need to attack anybody it's fine we should be critical of the things we read especially as reviewers if you are a reviewer I encourage you to look at the things that you're reviewing and be critical of them and we're all going to mess up and miss things because we don't all have the same world view but try to be more appreciative of the discussion that's happening around you all the time with fandom because fandom is so fun because we are constantly discussing and the discourse like I love it and I encourage you to go deeper into phanom with that and really deeply discuss and enjoy the things that you enjoy cuz it's fun it's fun to sometimes talk about this thing that you hate in the series like obviously all right guys that is it for today comment down below and just discuss with me about everything related to this topic I know that when I mentioned I was going to do a video like this a lot of you are really excited about it and like the flaws of things and people like talk about negative things too and it's fine and there are plenty of things like I said that I love that a lot of you have been like I hate that thing and it's fine I'm still going to love it like your hate of that thing is not going to make me stop loving it and vice versa so comment below let me know and I might even do some followup videos to this and stuff because like I said my favorite topics I'm I'll animate it today cuz I just love it so much so thank you all for watching and I'll see all you guys soon byehey guys it's Sam and today I want to do a book chat on loving something and still being able to discuss its flaws no it's without fault like these are the faults Miss born one of my favorite series that I finished this year again I think it's an amazing fantasy series I love everything about it and a lot of it is so Flawless and it's woven together beautifully but Vin as a main character is written really poorly she's written by a white dude and you can definitely tell and again I'm sure he's gotten better as books have gone on I haven't been able to tell yet cuz I haven't read any more of his books but like that's a perfect series to me and I don't like the main character and I don't like who the main character is with like I don't really like the two main protagonists in that series I still like it but like I can say if someone's like oh Vin is written really shitty I'm like yeah she is she's written by a dude and you can definitely tell I can go on and on with a bunch of different series I mean there's so many series that I love that have issues and there are some series that like even I have a hard time pointing out flaws for like the G Trilogy for example someone could come at me and be like here's the flaw of the G Trilogy be like you know like I didn't even see that really because I am so like in love with it that I can't even really see that flaw or I can say like I disagree with you but like like I totally think like your complaint is valid again not everybody reads book super critically or like you can read a book through a first time think it's like Flawless and wonderful and think about it for a little bit and be like oh wait there's some issues or somebody can come up to you and be like hey this and this and this was really shitty and you're like oh yeah that's good but when some when someone comes up to you and it's like oh there's this issue and you're like no no that doesn't ex no it doesn't exist that's when I have a problem and that's how it becomes just kind of so toxic with fan being like if you say anything bad about this particular series or this character whatever you're not a real fan you're not a big of a fan as as I am and I'm I'm the best fan and it's like there's no competition as far as fans it's fine and you can love something and point out and talk about its faults and if anything I think that makes you a better fan critical of things and being able to like fully digest and discuss something that you love like if anything you're going to get a deeper appreciation of that story and that series and that character and everything else when you can like see that it's a fully fleshed out thing with problems because we as humans have issues plenty of them so I encourage you in the future when you are trying to protect your faves to be protective of them obviously I have plenty of faves I done a whole video about like all the faves that I protect but like be willing to discuss with somebody as long as you're not being combative and being mean and being awful like it you know takes to a Tango on a respect level but if somebody is coming at you and being like hey this thing that this thing that you love did is really hurtful to me or I think is really crappy like you can discuss that with somebody and it doesn't make you a bad fan and it doesn't make them a bad fan and you don't need to attack anybody it's fine we should be critical of the things we read especially as reviewers if you are a reviewer I encourage you to look at the things that you're reviewing and be critical of them and we're all going to mess up and miss things because we don't all have the same world view but try to be more appreciative of the discussion that's happening around you all the time with fandom because fandom is so fun because we are constantly discussing and the discourse like I love it and I encourage you to go deeper into phanom with that and really deeply discuss and enjoy the things that you enjoy cuz it's fun it's fun to sometimes talk about this thing that you hate in the series like obviously all right guys that is it for today comment down below and just discuss with me about everything related to this topic I know that when I mentioned I was going to do a video like this a lot of you are really excited about it and like the flaws of things and people like talk about negative things too and it's fine and there are plenty of things like I said that I love that a lot of you have been like I hate that thing and it's fine I'm still going to love it like your hate of that thing is not going to make me stop loving it and vice versa so comment below let me know and I might even do some followup videos to this and stuff because like I said my favorite topics I'm I'll animate it today cuz I just love it so much so thank you all for watching and I'll see all you guys soon bye\n"
