Nikon Z6 III - - It's Outstanding

**Nikon Z63: A Camera that Hits all the Right Notes**

I've had the pleasure of working with both codified and Fujifilm cameras, but Nikon's latest offering, the Z63, has really impressed me. If you're interested in learning more about this camera, I'll put a link to the manufacturer's page in the description below.

One of the notable features of the Z63 is its fully articulating flip screen. I know that some people love this feature, while others may not be as enthusiastic about it. Personally, I do enjoy being able to spin the screen around and see what I'm doing, especially when shooting video or trying out low-angle shots.

The body design of the Z63 is also new, with a deeper grip than its predecessor, the Z62. While this may seem like a small change, it's actually quite welcome for those who prefer a more substantial camera in their hands. Speaking of grips, there will be an optional accessory available to enhance the camera's ergonomics.

In terms of handling, the Z63 has a familiar layout with function buttons conveniently located under your fingers. However, the back of the camera has undergone some changes to bring it more in line with other Nikon models, such as the Z8. This design decision may seem minor, but it's actually a significant step forward for consistency and cohesion.

Another feature that's sure to impress is the viewfinder on the Z63. It boasts an impressive 5.7 million dot resolution and supports up to 120 frames per second, making it one of the best viewfinders I've ever had the pleasure of using in any Nikon camera. The fact that it also supports DCP3 compliance, HLG, and has a manually adjustable brightness setting that can be dialed all the way up to 4,000 nits makes it an absolute powerhouse.

Finally, the Z63 still features dual card slots, with CF Express B and SD slots available for flexibility. For me, personally, this is a major selling point, as I've found that having more options when it comes to storage is essential for my workflow.

**Performance Improvements**

What really sets the Z63 apart from its competitors, however, is its partially stacked semisensor. This technology was a major boon for Nikon in terms of performance, and when combined with the Xeed 7 processor, it's clear that they've made some significant strides forward. I'm excited to see how this camera performs in real-world use cases, and I have no doubt that it will hold its own against any other camera on the market.

**The Nikon Ecosystem**

One of the things that really impresses me about the Z63 is the way it fits into the broader Nikon ecosystem. With a range of excellent lenses available for this camera, including the new Nikkor Z 24mm f/1.8 S and the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S, I think this is definitely a system worth considering for photographers who are already invested in the Nikon brand.

**Conclusion**

Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed with the Nikon Z63, and I think it's an absolute must-have for anyone looking to upgrade their camera collection. With its impressive performance, excellent handling, and outstanding viewfinder, this camera really does feel like a major step forward for Nikon. Of course, as always, there are some trade-offs, such as the 24 megapixel sensor, which may not appeal to photographers who prefer higher resolutions.

**Full Review**

I'll be following up with a full review of the Z63 once I've had more time to work with it and put it through its paces. In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments about this camera, please don't hesitate to leave them in the comments below.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is the just announced brand new Nikon z63 the much anticipated Edition to the Z6 line that also features a brand new partially stacked camos sensor the xped 7 processor from the Z8 and z9 and a host of major improvements over its predecessor welcome back everyone in this video we are going to have a look at the brand new z63 full disclosure here I had exactly one day to shoot with this camera I shot on it all day really impressed with the image quality the handling everything but I just want to note that this is not a full review this is a first look I will follow up with a full review and I've had more time on the camera but let's dive in and look at what's new here so one thing you have to understand about the z63 and why this is such an important camera for Nikon is that anytime you can solve a paino you can solve a problem without ra ing the price point you've done something that's pretty incredible and that's what we've got here this is a partially stacked Coss sensor now what this means and I don't have a completely technical explanation for you but the bottleneck with the camos sensor is going to be the readout speed and we've seen this on a lot of cameras that have come out really over the last 6 years or so where you have a 24 megapixel camera that will shoot 4K video oversampled from 6K which is very cool but it won't do it past about 30p when you get up to 60p it actually introduces a crop and this has to do with the readout speed it is physically difficult well it's impossible to get past so what Nikon have done with a partially stacked sensor is they've mimicked the technology that you get with a fully stacked semos sensor so with a full stack you have a memory layer that sits underneath the sensor and that offsets a lot of that readout speed and you're able to do a lot more with it that's why the Z8 and the z9 don't even have shutters in them it has such an incredible readout speed you don't have any of the Jello effect you don't have any distortions with motion it just works like you want it to do it's the next best thing to a global readout so with a partially stacked sensor we have multiple high-speed processing circuits stacked in layers both above and below the Imaging area of the sensor much like a fully stacked sensor the high-speed readout is then made possible by this new sensor and combination with the same xpeed 7 processing engine that we have in the Z8 and z9 of course with the new processor we also see a boost in autofocus Nikon are saying it's clocking in at a full 20% faster than what we had on the z62 it also featured the advanced subject detection technology of both the Z8 and z9 to automatically detect the nine different subject types including people animals various vehicles and the camera also features Nikon's incredible 3D autofocus tracking the new speed boost also enables pre-release capture up to 120 frames a second I do want to note here that when shooting raw files if you're shooting in high-speed mode the buffer is really deep on this camera in fact I didn't get it to tap out at all it just kept shooting but pre-release comes in really handy when when you're a little bit late to A Moment Like a Bird taking flight or a significant moment in a sports event so ensure you got the shot with high-speed shooting now it's also worth noting that the Z6 still has a mechanical shutter this is actually something that I prefer it feels better to me where I have that haptic feedback when I'm taking images but In fairness I did shoot all day all of the example shots that you see in this were done using electronic shutter and I didn't have any issues at all this performed very well the image quality is outstanding as you can see from these images and essentially this new sensor opens up a lot of doors for both Stills and video shooting so for high-speed shooting if you're using the mechanical shutter it still is going to cap out at 14 frames per second but if you go to the electronic shutter you're going to get 20 frames per second raw and it'll go clear up to 60 frames per second with no crop and if you don't mind a crop it will actually go up to 120 frames per second in DX mode if You' love to shoot video you're really going to appreciate the z63 because now we can shoot internal raw 6K video up to 60 frames per second with no crop this is something that to my knowledge there isn't another 24 megapixel sensor that will allow you to do this plus we have the new processor that is take carried over from the Z8 and the z9 and this is going to open up a lot of doors for video shooting as well so as I mentioned you have 6K 60 frames per second in raw internal 6K prores raw internal you can do 5.4k h264 the 4K is oversampled from 6K so image quality is excellent as I mentioned all the way up to 60p with no crop you can do 120 frames a second 4K in DX mode if you don't mind shooting in 1080 you can push this all the way up to 240 frames per second another nice touch for video Shooters it's a small thing but a big deal if you shoot video and you need audio the mic Jack now supports line level input and we also have pixel shift in the z63 the camera supports pixel shift high resolution up to 96 megapixels of course it doesn't compile the shot in camera you're going to have to do that in something like the Nikon Studio software but it does allow your choices of either using 16 frames or 32 frames if you want a little bit better image quality it's really outstanding another big surprise for me is that Lightroom actually reads the raw files and so I was able to shoot raw and actually bring everything in and work with it in Lightroom I do need to note that this is a pre-production camera that you're seeing the images from but the quality is absolutely outstanding colors are nice they're bold contrast is exceptional right out of the gate just as you would expect from a Nikon camera and some of the images that you're looking at I did use my film preset packs on and so this is a project that I undertook cuz I wanted to get the color and look of various Fujifilm and Kodak film stocks in a digital space and the whole project took me about two years to realize but I started with Fujifilm slide stocks such as provia and velvia these two have become kind of my go-to film simulations in my own work and then I started replicating the look of c41 films such as superia natra and the movie film stock at turna once I had those I started working on various codak Chrome stocks from the 1960s and 1970s and other Kodak stocks such such as e100g ector gold and of course portra 160 I've made both codified and Fujifilm who's interested I will put a link in the description below this video if you want to check them out so a couple other features that I want to talk about the body design is slightly different from its predecessor this is the z62 the biggest difference that we have now is the fully articulating flip screen I know that this is a little bit controversial some people love this some people don't I personally do like it because I do shoot some video and I do weird angle low angle stuff sometimes and it is nice to be able to just spin that screen around and be able to see what you're doing the body design on the z63 is also new it's very close to the z62 still feels very compact but it does have a deeper grip I know a lot of people will appreciate this and speaking of grips if you want to get a grip for this camera there will be one available the camera does have the same familiar layout with the function buttons right under your fingers the back of the camera is slightly different this puts it more in line with things like the Z8 and I think it's done for consist disty purposes but if you're coming from the z62 I think this is going to be a very comfortable transition moving to the z63 in terms of handling another thing that I want to mention about this camera is the viewfinder in here is excellent it is absolutely outstanding so the resolution on this is 5.7 million dots and this evf does support up to 120 frames per second as a refresh rate I know a lot of people are really going to love that it is also now dcp3 compliant it supports hlg and it is really bright in fact you can manually turn this up to 4,000 nits which is blinding it's way more than anybody is ever going to need for this viewfinder but it is one of the best viewfinders I've used in any Nikon camera it is outstanding of course the camera still features The Familiar dual card slots CF Express b as well as SD I personally think that Nikon have just hit it out of the park with this camera and I want to give you some of my thoughts on this I know that the 24 megapixel thing is going to be for still photographers some may feel like this is a little bit of a limitation honestly for me personally I compose and I crop everything in camera while I'm shooting so I don't really need that extra resolution to crop with most of the time so for me it's fine I think that this is a good resolution for Nikon to stick to I also think that because with 24 megapixels it just works better for video resolution there's still some oversampling that you're doing on here but it's a lot more in the ballpark than it's going to be if you're using a really high resolution sensor like 48 megapixels and above so I think that was the right choice for Nikon to stay with this the thing that impresses me the most about the z63 though is going to be this partially stack semos sensor I think this was such a boon for Nikon in terms of being able to get some major performance improvements in camera especially when you combine that with the xeed 7 processor that's something that's very important and they're able to keep it at the $2,000 is price point I don't have the final number yet but I'll put it down below when I get that but that's something that's really exciting to me because you're actually solving a problem that other cameras are not able to do so this actually competes very well when you look at the ecosystem what's available out there and it's coming in at the same price point it becomes kind of a no-brainer for people I think Nikon with the Z line has come up with an amazing series of lenses and I think this is really a system that's going to be worth looking at you know last year when they introduced the Nikon ZF I actually bought one I haven't gotten to my full review on that but I've had so much fun using that camera in fact I this is my z62 that I bought and I don't use this all that much it was something that I thought I was going to use I really like the ZF but now I'm looking at the z63 and I'm realizing that we have something that really is am major upgrade than anything you're going to find out there so I will do a full review when I have a little more time with this camera and and when I'm able to actually get my head around some of the things and really put it through its Paces so if you have any questions for that full review please leave them in the comments below I will see you guys in the next video Until then later\n"
