I just had an amazing time reading the Everland trilogy by Wendy Spinelli, which is a steampunk reimagining of three classic children's stories: Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. Next up is the Kiss of Deception trilogy by Mary E. Pearson, which I've only had a chance to read two of so far, but I'm eager to dive into the final book in the series. This fantasy novel follows a young princess who flees her arranged marriage and finds herself in a strange new world. The story is full of mystery and intrigue, as our protagonist navigates this unfamiliar land and tries to uncover the truth about her past.

actually because i did my books that live up to the hype video so this is kind of the opposite once again it's like the video that i did this past april or so where i talked about some books that i thought you had never heard of just books in general i don't think there's any repeats from this video i think there's just one that i talked about but i can't remember if i had read it before i filmed that video or not but obviously you may have heard of these and arguably you probably have especially if you watch my videos but basically these are books that i don't think get the love that they deserve i think they're a little bit underrated and a little bit under hyped and should be talked about more because there's a lot of series out there that are talked about constantly and i think that these books should also be a part of that i actually think i might do another update of that books you've never heard of video even though it's not been that long since i did that first one i think i have some more to share with you guys and i love talking about books that i don't get to talk about very often so i think that these videos are fun so maybe i'll do that if i have enough books to talk about but these are just series i have duologies here trilogies all of that jazz and i made sure that i have read more than one book in the series most of them i have read the entirety of the series but i have read at least two of the books if i haven't read all of them there are some that i was really tempted to include even though i had only read one book but i decided to leave them off until i continue with that series because it feels weird to recommend an entire series when i had only read one book of it but without further ado let's just get into the video first up is a recent read of mine and that is the tiny pretty things duology by danielle clayton and sona chairaipotra this duology is actually being adapted by netflix i believe it's becoming a tv show i can't remember if they were doing a tv show or a movie but i don't know when that's coming out and i'm very skeptical about it because they've changed like all of the characters so not too sure how i'm going to like that i will watch it though to see however these audiobooks were awesome it said at the american ballet academy in manhattan and you follow the perspectives of three different characters all seeing a different side of things so we have gigi who is from california and she has come to this school because she loves to dance she's just hoping to rise to the top and be the best ballerina that she possibly can we have june who is trying to live up to her mother's expectations but she really struggles with that because she's always the understudy and then we have bet and bet is trying to live up to her sister's legacy and she will do absolutely anything it takes in order to do that so definitely a lot of bullying instances that is a main topic of this series but it's very dramatic and really enjoyable to read it does have like girl girl drama but i didn't completely hate it because there was a goal for each of them it wasn't just drama for the sake of drama all of the characters were super well fleshed out and it completely transports you to the world of ballet and you see how hard these girls work and how badly they want it it's also a really diverse cast of characters and all the characters are so well developed each perspective i loved it was like everyone was interesting in its own way and there wasn't one perspective that i was like oh like i don't really care about this one i was very invested in every single one of them and even all the side characters so this kind of reminded me a center stage like i remember watching that movie when i was a kid because we danced when we were kids that was like a big part of our lives so i just remember watching that movie it's definitely very different but that's just kind of what i thought of with all the ballet drama but definitely a series that i think deserves a lot more love than it gets do be wary though there are multiple triggers in this series eating disorders is one bullying obviously a suicide attempt just be aware of that when going into it that there might be some triggering content in this series next is the code name verity duology by elizabeth wein so we have the first book which is code name verity and the second book rose under fire and then there's also the pearl thief which is a prequel to them so they're companion novels it's not like you have to read one in order to understand what's going on you will just see different characters as easter eggs almost and be able to connect the dots a little bit better i do have copies of all three of these books but they're on my downstairs shelf and i did go down there and grab a bunch of books but i forgot and then i put the chair there and i can't get over the chair i swear i'm not being lazy it just completely blocks the doorway but anyways this is a historical fiction duology that is set during world war ii and it focuses on pilots that's kind of something that the author specializes in but in the first book i'm just going to focus on like the duology because i didn't like the pearl thief quite as much however i loved codename parody and rose under fire so in codename verity you follow a pilot who has crash landed in nazi occupied france and she is being interrogated by the gestapo as she has been captured so that's what the story is it's her whole interrogation and that's how she's telling the story it's fascinating and just so powerful and as is the second book rose under fire which is set in robin's brook which is the notorious women's concentration camp so obviously neither of them are going to be easy reads but i think they were very meaningful and taught me a lot about like pilots during that time and i loved that they focused on females during the war i just had like such an experience reading them and highly recommend next is the finishing school series by gail carriger i do have copies of these books but they're at my parents house they are like the books that i couldn't fit on my shelves anymore but i still wanted to keep so the first book is curtsies and conspiracies and then the second book i can't think of what it's called right now i know the color of it i know what the cover looks like but i can't think of the title but i have read two of these books i believe it's a four book series now i haven't gotten the chance to get to the rest of them but i feel like i do want to eventually so this mixes finishing school in like typical victorian female values with espionage no curtsies and conspiracies is the second one etiquette and espionage is the first one that's i always mix those two up so you have these young ladies that are sent off to finishing school to learn all about manners and how to be a proper lady but they are also learning espionage at the same time and it is so much fun a very unique and different read it's kind of steampunky which is a lot of fun and i just had such a blast reading those two books it's just been so long since i've read them and i don't know why i didn't end up continuing with the series but i will try to because it was a great time next is the starbound trilogy by amie kaufman and megan spooner this is another companion trilogy but it is a companion trilogy of these space romances so we have these broken stars which is the first book then this shattered world and finally their fractured light all of these books apart from having beautiful covers have a really fun and beautiful space-based love story i'm not a huge fan of sci-fi but these totally transported me to a completely different world and swept me away with the romance it was a lot of fun because it wasn't just a romance the stories hit a lot of levels there was a lot of drama and intrigue that kept me reading and i feel like these do have like at one point they had a fair amount of hype but i think it's kind of died down but if you like sci-fi or you just like romance and you're looking for something a little bit different i think that you would probably really enjoy these next is another historical fiction and that is the prisoner of night and fog duology by anne blankman so the first book is prisoner night in fog and then the second book is conspiracy of blood and smoke i read these when i first started booktube and i fell in love with them they were such an unexpected story like i didn't know what i would get going into it but it gave me something entirely different in the best way possible so once again a world war ii historical fiction but we are following our main character who has learned that her uncle hitler is not the person that she thought he was obviously so she learns that he had a hand in the murder of her father and she teams up with a jewish reporter and they are obviously uncovering all the terrible things that he has done and investigating more into that so it's an edge of your seat kind of read because it's such a high-stakes situation but you see such growth with the main character as she's learning that the world that she was brought up in is not the way that the world should be and that there's something really wrong with it like it's so powerful a very bold and unexpected unique take on a world war ii historical fiction and there's a mystery element to it as well which is really fun and interesting it's fun and not like a fun way but i don't know it added a lot to the story but i just had like such a time reading these i had no idea what was going to happen the entire time reading these and that intrigue made me enjoy them so much next is the books of bayern series by shannon hale this is actually quite an older series so i don't know when it originally came out these are actually reprinted covers which i love way more than the original covers so 2003 is when these initially came out so they may have been hyped up when they first came out but i wasn't a huge reader then so i can't tell you that all i know is that i feel like they deserve more hype than they get so this is a fantasy series and it's a companion series but i would say with this one you do want to read all of the books in order it matters more than the other companion series that i've talked about so we have the first book which is the goose girl the second book anna burning which is also my favorite of the series the third book river secrets and the final book forest born all of these are such interesting and unique standalone fantasy stories and they also combine to make this greater story that is so fascinating so the basis for it is an obscure grimm's fairy tale and that's where all of these stories stem from and it's so interesting to me like in the first book the main character has the ability to talk to animals and she is the goose girl so if you're familiar with that fairy tale she ends up running off from the royal life that she knew and they get a lot darker than i was expecting like anna burning particularly gets very dark however i really enjoyed that aspect of it so they're kind of like more of the typical medieval fantasy but there's still a twist on that i can't tell you how much i enjoyed the audiobooks for them they are full cast audiobooks so they were so enjoyable but any way that you consume this story i think you will really enjoy the whole series and you'll read one and then you'll have to read the rest of them because you just want to know what's happening to the rest of the characters like each of them connect you have the characters in all of the books but i love that each story gave me the opportunity to learn more about a particular character that you had been introduced to so i feel like all four main characters i really loved learning about next is the wolf by wolf duology by ryan graudin i'm sure you guessed that this was going to show up on here so we have the first book wolf by wolf and the second book blood for blood and then there is also a prequel novella which is iron to iron i think is what it's called i can't think of it right now but i'm pretty sure it's iron to iron i can't think of like what the connecting word is but this is the book that i'm not sure if i included in that first video i am not sure if i had read it yet if i had then i probably totally did this is once again a series that took me by surprise with how much i enjoyed it so world war ii historical fiction again i don't know what it is like there's no series for other historical fiction periods that i've really read but this is very different because it's an alternate history so it's not actually set during world war ii it is speculative almost about what would have happened if the nazis won world war ii so you have a character who has escaped from a death camp and she now has the ability to face shift because she was experimented upon and she's going to use that ability in this contest so there's this contest going all the way from berlin to tokyo where they ride a motorcycle it's this motorcycle race and whoever wins the motorcycle race gets the opportunity to meet hitler so she is going to face shift to look like one of the previous victors so then she can meet hitler and kill him because she's working for the resistance it sounds weird it sounds like it wouldn't work like i was super skeptical going into it but i just was so addicted to this story like i thought i really enjoyed wolf by wolf but i liked blood for blood even more than that and even the novella added so much more because you got to learn more about these characters there's a lot of characters by each one you get to know so well and i just like it's so wild it's definitely a series that i just can't stop thinking about like oh my goodness i finished reading it semi-recently to when i'm filming this and i finished this book and it destroyed me it absolutely wrecked me it had been so long since i read a sequel where i closed it and i was like what like i was just taken aback and i had to take a second and be like like it is just such an experience reading these books and actually my dad and my sister after i posted on instagram but reading them both asked to borrow them i mean my sister in california didn't ask to borrow them she went and bought her own copy but i feel like i have sold these at least to some of you guys and i'm glad and i hope that you enjoy them but i hope more of you if you haven't been convinced yet to check out this duology please do it's super interesting also the man in the high castle on amazon is the same sort of concept so i'm going to watch that now because i just like i oh my gosh i can't stop thinking about these next is the daughter of the pirate king duology by trisha levinseller so first book daughter of the pirate king in the second book daughter of the siren queen this is a pirate obviously duology but it's just a really fun fantastical sort of sexy pirate story it was a lot more risque than i was really expecting but i had so much fun with reading it so you follow obviously the daughter of the pirate king and she ends up intentionally being captured on an enemy ship and she's infiltrating to try and find out more information but she ends up meeting with first mate who's very attractive obviously and snarky and they just have a really great banter relationship but there's also a lot of like pirate and mermaid sort of things happening so i feel like they are a solid summer fantasy but also just really any time of year you can read them i haven't really read that many books about pirates but this duology was just a ton of fun and i had a great time with it next is the everland trilogy by wendy spinelli so i have read all three of the books but i don't have a copy of the last book because i was waiting for it to come out in paperback since i had the other two in paperback and i just kind of forgot so the first book is everland and the second book is umber land and then the third book is ozland so if you are getting that from these titles this is a steampunk reimagining retelling of first peter pan second alice in wonderland and then thirdly wizard of oz so kind of that like golden trifecta of children's books and that was immediately what sucked me into the story but i haven't read a lot of steampunk stories and i had a lot of fun with this series i think it was an interesting twist on each like i can't i wanted to say fairy tale but they're not fairy tales but each children's story each children's classic however it also had its own storyline so the kids are the only people who have survived from this plague so you might not want to read it now if that's going to be difficult for you but there was a plague and all the adults died and only the kids are surviving and london where the books are set has been completely just destroyed by bombs and disease because it's historical fiction as well so you just follow these kids as they are trying to survive after the after effects of everything that has happened recently really interesting concept and i enjoyed the execution i would say these are kind of on the younger end of ya even though they are pretty dark but the writing is a little bit younger not in a negative way just like a warning it's a bit more juvenile but i do plan on picking up that third book at some point because i have read it and i feel like i should have all of them also i listened to the audiobooks for these as well and they were a thumbs up for me next is the kiss of deception trilogy by mary e pearson so this starts with kiss of deception and then we have the heart of betrayal and finally beauty of darkness i have read two of these books and i haven't gotten to this one yet but i need to reread at least this one in order to get to this one which is why it just hasn't happened yet however i had such a fun time with this fantasy story so in the first book there's kind of a mystery element going on because you follow a princess who has run away on the day of her wedding she wants nothing to do with it her parents had arranged her in this marriage that she's not interested in and it's kind of all a sham because she's supposed to have powers but she doesn't so she ends up fleeing to this village and there are two people who followed her one is the prince she was supposed to marry and the second one is an assassin who was sent to kill her and you don't know who it is like who's who over the course of this book so there's this guessing and mystery element as you're reading it which was so unique and just kept me very engaged in the story but also just like overall it was really enjoyable so i did enjoy the sequel when i was reading it but i just i don't i really need to get to the rest of them but highly recommend this it's very interesting and different and finally is another companion duology and that is the furthermore duology by tahara mafi so we have furthermore the first book and then the second book which would definitely not one where you want to read one or you have to read one rather in order to read the other but it's just kind of a fun thing again they're set in the same world they also both have beautiful covers but this is actually a middle grade fantasy duology and it's so much fun i love the world for it and each story is really unique so this deals with color and it's kind of alice in wonderland-esque and then in this one we deal with a girl who she deals with dead bodies on a daily basis so like really weird and different but such a blast to read both of these i think that they're super quick reads and a lot of fun too so those are all of these series that i don't think get all the love that they deserve there might be some that you're like why didn't you include that one and it's probably because i've only read one so if you're familiar with that fairy tale she ends up running off from the royal life that she knew and they get a lot darker than i was expecting like anna burning particularly gets very dark however i really enjoyed that aspect of it so they're kind of like more of the typical medieval fantasy but there's still a twist on that i can't tell you how much i enjoyed the audiobooks for them they are full cast audiobooks so they were so enjoyable but any way that you consume this story i think you will really enjoy the whole series and you'll read one and then you'll have to read the rest of them because you just want to know what's happening to the rest of the characters like each of them connect you have the characters in all of the books but i love that each story gave me the opportunity to learn more about a particular character that you had been introduced to so i feel like all four main characters i really loved learning about next is the wolf by wolf duology by ryan graudin i'm sure you guessed that this was going to show up on here so we have the first book wolf by wolf and the second book blood for blood and then there is also a prequel novella which is iron to iron i think is what it's called i can't think of it right now but i'm pretty sure it's iron to iron i can't think of like what the connecting word is but this is the book that i'm not sure if i included in that first video i am not sure if i had read it yet if i had then i probably totally did this is once again a series that took me by surprise with how much i enjoyed it so world war ii historical fiction again i don't know what it is like there's no series for other historical fiction periods that i've really read but this is very different because it's an alternate history so it's not actually set during world war ii it is speculative almost about what would have happened if the nazis won world war ii so you have a character who has escaped from a death camp and she now has the ability to face shift because she was experimented upon and she's going to use that ability in this contest so there's this contest going all the way from berlin to tokyo where they ride a motorcycle it's this motorcycle race and whoever wins the motorcycle race gets the opportunity to meet hitler so she is going to face shift to look like one of the previous victors so then she can meet hitler and kill him because she's working for the resistance it sounds weird it sounds like it wouldn't work like i was super skeptical going into it but i just was so addicted to this story like i thought i really enjoyed wolf by wolf but i liked blood for blood even more than that and even the novella added so much more because you got to learn more about these characters there's a lot of characters by each one you get to know so well and i just like it's so wild it's definitely a series that i just can't stop thinking about like oh my goodness i finished reading it semi-recently to when i'm filming this and i finished this book and it destroyed me it absolutely wrecked me it had been so long since i read a sequel where i closed it and i was like what like i was just taken aback and i had to take a second and be like like it is just such an experience reading these books and actually my dad and my sister after i posted on instagram but reading them both asked to borrow them i mean my sister in california didn't ask to borrow them she went and bought her own copy but i feel like i have sold these at least to some of you guys and i'm glad and i hope that you enjoy them but i hope more of you if you haven't been convinced yet to check out this duology please do it's super interesting also the man in the high castle on amazon is the same sort of concept so i'm going to watch that now because i just like i oh my gosh i can't stop thinking about these next is the daughter of the pirate king duology by trisha levinseller so first book daughter of the pirate king in the second book daughter of the siren queen this is a pirate obviously duology but it's just a really fun fantastical sort of sexy pirate story it was a lot more risque than i was really expecting but i had so much fun with reading it so you follow obviously the daughter of the pirate king and she ends up intentionally being captured on an enemy ship and she's infiltrating to try and find out more information but she ends up meeting with first mate who's very attractive obviously and snarky and they just have a really great banter relationship but there's also a lot of like pirate and mermaid sort of things happening so i feel like they are a solid summer fantasy but also just really any time of year you can read them i haven't really read that many books about pirates but this duology was just a ton of fun and i had a great time with it next is the everland trilogy by wendy spinelli so i have read all three of the books but i don't have a copy of the last book because i was waiting for it to come out in paperback since i had the other two in paperback and i just kind of forgot so the first book is everland and the second book is umber land and then the third book is ozland so if you are getting that from these titles this is a steampunk reimagining retelling of first peter pan second alice in wonderland and then thirdly wizard of oz so kind of that like golden trifecta of children's books and that was immediately what sucked me into the story but i haven't read a lot of steampunk stories and i had a lot of fun with this series i think it was an interesting twist on each like i can't i wanted to say fairy tale but they're not fairy tales but each children's story each children's classic however it also had its own storyline so the kids are the only people who have survived from this plague so you might not want to read it now if that's going to be difficult for you but there was a plague and all the adults died and only the kids are surviving and london where the books are set has been completely just destroyed by bombs and disease because it's historical fiction as well so you just follow these kids as they are trying to survive after the after effects of everything that has happened recently really interesting concept and i enjoyed the execution i would say these are kind of on the younger end of ya even though they are pretty dark but the writing is a little bit younger not in a negative way just like a warning it's a bit more juvenile but i do plan on picking up that third book at some point because i have read it and i feel like i should have all of them also i listened to the audiobooks for these as well and they were a thumbs up for me next is the kiss of deception trilogy by mary e pearson so this starts with kiss of deception and then we have the heart of betrayal and finally beauty of darkness i have read two of these books and i haven't gotten to this one yet but i need to reread at least this one in order to get to this one which is why it just hasn't happened yet however i had such a fun time with this fantasy story so in the first book there's kind of a mystery element going on because you follow a princess who has run away on the day of her wedding she wants nothing to do with it her parents had arranged her in this marriage that she's not interested in and it's kind of all a sham because she's supposed to have powers but she doesn't so she ends up fleeing to this village and there are two people who followed her one is the prince she was supposed to marry and the second one is an assassin who was sent to kill her and you don't know who it is like who's who over the course of this book so there's this guessing and mystery element as you're reading it which was so unique and just kept me very engaged in the story but also just like overall it was really enjoyable so i did enjoy the sequel when i was reading it but i just i don't i really need to get to the rest of them but highly recommend this it's very interesting and different and finally is another companion duology and that is the furthermore duology by tahara mafi so we have furthermore the first book and then the second book which would definitely not one where you want to read one or you have to read one rather in order to read the other but it's just kind of a fun thing again they're set in the same world they also both have beautiful covers but this is actually a middle grade fantasy duology and it's so much fun i love the world for it and each story is really unique so this deals with color and it's kind of alice in wonderland-esque and then in this one we deal with a girl who she deals with dead bodies on a daily basis so like really weird and different but such a blast to read both of these i think that they're super quick reads and a lot of fun too so those are all of these series that i don't think get all the love that they deserve there might be some that you're like why didn't you include that one and it's probably because i've only read one of the books so i will do an update on this as soon as i have more books to talk about but please do let me know what series you think is underrated and let me
