The World of High-Performance Cars: A Tour of the Top Tier
As we set out on our journey to explore the world of high-performance cars, we began with a visit to Cob, where we had the opportunity to test drive some of the latest and greatest vehicles. Our first stop was a Ford EcoBoost Mustang, which caught our eye with its impressive performance capabilities. Equipped with only a few upgrades - a panel filter and an E85 blend tune - this car was able to deliver a 12-second quarter-mile time, a feat that was unmatched by most other cars on the market.
The Mustang's impressive acceleration was made possible by its turbocharged direct-injected motor, which was able to produce a significant amount of power while still maintaining efficiency. This was further enhanced by the car's limited-slip differential and rear-wheel drive layout, making it a formidable force on both the track and the road. Our test driver had a blast driving this car, remarking that it was "fun on the track" and "great on the road." The only drawback, he noted, was that the car could be a bit tricky to handle in tight corners, but overall, it was an exhilarating experience.
Next up was a visit from Ian, who joined us for a drive of his own. His Ford Fiesta S was another impressive performer, equipped with launch control and throttle cut functionality. This feature allowed him to take the car out on the road and put it through its paces, showcasing its agility and responsiveness. With a button-activated launch control system that could be found in many modern cars, Ian was able to get the Fiesta off the line quickly and smoothly.
One of the standout features of the Fiesta's launch control system was its ability to hold boost while stationary, giving it an added kick when it came out of the gate. This allowed Ian to get a good feel for how the car handled on the road, even in stop-and-go traffic. With its advanced technology and driver-centric design, the Fiesta is truly a fun-to-drive car that's perfect for anyone looking for a reliable ride.
As we continued our tour, we caught up with Ian again to discuss some of his thoughts on the cars we'd seen so far. He mentioned that one of the things he loved about driving these high-performance vehicles was the sense of freedom they gave him behind the wheel. "It's like you can drive this car every day," he said, "and still have tons of fun." This is especially true for those who enjoy spirited driving on winding roads or at the track.
Ian also noted that one of the benefits of these modern turbocharged direct-injected motors was their ability to be tuned and customized. With advanced software and hardware available, car owners can take their vehicles to the next level by fine-tuning performance parameters like boost pressure and ignition timing. This allowed Ian to make his Fiesta S go even faster, and he noted that it was also surprisingly efficient on the freeway.
As we wrapped up our tour, Ian mentioned that one of the things he liked about these high-performance cars was their ability to appeal to a wide range of drivers. Whether you're looking for a fun-to-drive road car or a serious track tool, there's something on offer here. And with features like launch control and throttle cut functionality, you can take your driving experience to the next level.
In addition to its impressive performance capabilities, our final stop was the Porsche. This car was truly nuts, delivering a heart-pumping ride that left us all breathless. With its advanced technology and driver-centric design, it's no wonder this is one of the most sought-after cars on the market.
As we came to the end of our tour, Ian mentioned that while there are certainly some drawbacks to driving high-performance cars like these, they're also incredibly rewarding experiences. With their impressive acceleration and agile handling, they offer a level of excitement and engagement that's hard to find elsewhere. And with their advanced technology and customization options, owners can take their vehicles to the next level and make them truly unique.
Finally, Ian mentioned that one thing he liked about these cars was that you could choose your own adventure when it came to handling. If you want to drive aggressively and get sideways, you can stick with the stock tires. But if you're looking for more grip and performance, you can upgrade to bigger tires and take your driving experience to the next level.
In conclusion, our tour of high-performance cars was a wild ride that left us all exhilarated and inspired. From the Ford EcoBoost Mustang to the Porsche, each car offered its own unique blend of performance and style. And with their advanced technology and customization options, owners can take these vehicles to new heights and make them truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you're a seasoned car enthusiast or just looking for a fun ride, there's something on offer here that's sure to put a smile on your face.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enmorning everybody Welcome to uh a beautiful Back Road outside of Austin Texas uh the guys at cob tuning have generously invited me down here to drive a few of their cars and so this is the 2015 cobb stage 3 EcoBoost Mustang I drove it on the track yesterday today we're going to see how it does on the road uh so this is Ian Armstrong from Cobb thanks for having me again I really appreciate it problem and he's going to answer any questions we might have about the car on the way um yesterday on the track the car behaved really well um in fact my my only gripe about the car was uh was that I couldn't drift it and uh I didn't notice it at the time but uh I have since learned why and it's because uh in preparation for SEMA they put some big ad1 wheels in the tire on the car along with a 285 up front and a 305 in the back which is a ton of tire for a 4cylinder Mustang that's that's like Corvette Z06 kind of tires and so with all that grip at the back uh drifting it wasn't really going to happen so what they've done is for today's drive we put the stock wheels back on and the standard P0 tires which are 255 um Square stance so we'll go to sport mode sport steering I'm not going to drift it on the street but we'll put it in sport traction mode anyway and uh we're going to drive down this beautiful Texas Back Road here and see what's up so remind the audience what is in this car yeah so stage three package access port of course with an offthe shell States remap uh calibration is ready for the intake upgraded front mount intercooler so thicker uh more volume so you get more consistency and power and then a full turbo back exhaust so that's a catted down pipe and the cap back all 3 in so it's essentially the same package I have on R Fiesta ST just applied to Mustang yeah so bigger motor you got a bigger exhaust diameter it's a dual exhaust as well right yeah dual tip exhaust which just for show on a for well it does look better though fairness it does um it sounds good for a four cylinder Mustang to yeah you know what when I was on the track yesterday when you're at Full Throttle wow decreasing that that one really jumped out of nowhere when you're on the track you're wearing a helmet and you're at Full Throttle all the time you don't really hear the turbo so much but on the street when it's going going in and out of boost more often you do get a lot more turbo noise yeah that intake really makes a big difference in the turbo noise which is great when you have a turbo car to be able to really hear that on the road get that cool whoosh sound you lift off the throttle so you get the benefits of the lighter nose with the EcoBoost Mustang ver and then you also get what is it about 300 wheel horsepower and about 400 wheel torque give or take yeah with a stage tree setup it's going to be right around there on 93 octane fuel little less on 91 and we're and this is a stock turbo of course is the is the uh is the EcoBoost Mustang sort of like the fiesta in that it's got a really small turbo that's designed for a torquier application yeah so all of the EcoBoost line uh they really size the turbo to have tons of lowend and mid-range power uh so it definitely falls off on the top end uh but every where you're usually driving the car you get tons of power and tons of torque really strong mid-range and actually on the track I found myself a gear higher than I thought I would be to take better advantage of that low and mid mid-range power yeah so when we had our cob track day uh we took out this car and I told one of the guys as I was instructing just leave it in fourth gear and get used to the track cuz you'll have plenty of power everywhere he couldn't believe it but he definitely did this is a great Road I love this oh yeah okay you see even without drifting I could feel the back end did want to come around a little more I mean going from a 255 to a 35 is a massive difference in tire and it did look cool it did look cool and and it did have a lot of grip but by switching to a staggered stance it actually did accentuate a bit of the under steer versus uh this one where you could probably just yeah bring the back around really nice yeah it's too bad they look so what are you going to do right yeah uh this has the cop shifter knob but this is a standard shifter otherwise right yep totally stock shifter uh cable actuated the Ford cable shifters are actually really nice it it does feel like a linked shifter and not necessarily like a cable shifter still it's not as good as the tremi and the 350 which is really like bolt action rifle stuff but now on the road you know the track slows everything down you know on a car especially to mention again the Fiesta ST on the road is a monster um but on the track you know a bigger heavier car with more power will be faster here it's the same story you know on the track the GT will be quicker um it does the GT does still feel a bit quicker but out here realized man this is actually a lot of car for the road oh yeah yeah the tough thing for me is I daily Drive the fiesta and the front end is so short it's just right on in front of you and you get in the Mustang you're like wow this is a pretty big car it is a big car isn't it it sounds really it sounds nice and tuny really cool yeah the so all the Fords have the sound imposer and this one is actually through the speakers in the car and so you're getting a combination of the exhaust sound and the sound soser sound while you're in the cabin but I'm I'm hearing very real turbo noises those turbo noises are not speakers turbo noise is all from the intake heel Towing super easy power delivery right in that middle from three to five you've really got a nice shove even though the brakes are stock they've held up have you done pads in fluid or any of that or is it just stand stop brakes on this car the brakes have held up really good I mean even at the track yesterday I wasn't getting a lot of fade or anything like that yeah they do a really good job from the factory on uh the more Enthusiast oriented Fords yeah the steering is a bit lighter with the uh with the standard size wheels than it was yesterday and uh yeah really good balance when I reviewed this car stock it had really good balance this the standard one I drove had the automatic which stunk um the manual is much much better um and actually driving home from the track yesterday I drove this car back to the hotel and I just out of curiosity took it easy on the freeway 31 m per gallon yeah not bad yeah they yeah ecaboose Motors are they're really cool I I never thought I would own a we're in town time to go back the other way yeah a lot of a lot of people that didn't think that that Fords would be for them are kind of are down with the turbo motors for sure here and actually I was driving it around I drove it like through the town of Austin a bit last night as well I went to dinner and uh 20 mes per gallon in the city so not bad yeah really great for a car that makes 400 lb feet of torque yeah it it is a it is a you know a true true dual personality kind of deal and so what does this state if you if I handed you a stock EcoBoost Mustang what is this this package retail for uh so this package I think is going to be a little over 2,000 maybe so all of this stuff for two grand the intercooler the exhaust and the access yeah and it's all bolting in Factory locations you're not modifying anything or changing anything too drastically to to make it fit it's all you know stock turbo pip locations or the intercooler or the the intake is going to bolt up with all the factory mouss and so it's easy to install it's meant to be plug and playay and all you have to do is just flash the proper map with your access port and you get this kind of power you don't have to you don't have to have a custom tune you don't have to put the car on the dyno or anything like that and then once you've got that access port you buy it once and it's good forever right yeah exactly so we sent out updates you can update it anytime you want want uh and you can use live gauges so right now we got a shift light going on in the car and you can see individual cylinder timing correction um so you'll instantly know if you have a bad take of gas cuz you'll see that it's pulling timing in all four cylinders or something like that so it's a you know it's a tool just beyond flashing the car let's say someone has multiple cob tuner cars for instance we've got the fiest St now I'm getting the Focus RS can I use the same access port for both cars so the AP can only be installed on one car at a time okay uh and we do have different part numbers for different ranges of vehicles so typically the AP for the focus and Fiesta is one part number and for this Mustangs a different part number so you would probably need another one another AP for each car and we went uh you know you took me through the the tour of the facilities this morning it was great and and I didn't realize that you physically manufactur that AP inh house yeah so we design all the hardware ourselves we uh manufacture in Austin uh the board uh so it's it's pretty cool you know cool that we get to see all that happen right in how so I can just walk to the back and be like oh hey they're making shift knobs we're programming access fors today it's well I figured you know you guys had outsourced that Hardware somewhere but that's not actually the case yeah I mean the you know a lot of people like oh why don't you have a touchscreen access port and you know they're not easy to use while you're driving the car the buttons work well um and when we design our own Hardware we can make the access port do what we want it to do and so you know your if it was touchcreen wouldn't it be a lot more expensive too probably so yeah this thing is cool you know when you when you're going in and out of boost like you would be driving on a road like this it really does accentuate the the turoy sounds and and the balance of the car in these lower speed corners and you know I'm I'm not sure that down a if you're going down a road like this it probably is just as quick as the GT it's only when you're at track speeds and you've got the engine way at the top of the power band does the uh does that V8 really look at that great Corner yeah I love the Rolling Hills here I mean this road is spectacular especially right now yeah with nobody on it it's great all it myself this is going to be a popular package I mean the EcoBoost Mustang I I call it a great starter car I know a lot of parents aren't buying $25,000 Mustangs for kids but nevertheless I mean if you wanted to start with something very manageable and work your way up as opposed to starting with the the the V8 you know this is a you save yourself a lot of money yeah yeah you're going to save money initial purchase price these are easy bolt-on Parts you're still going to get tons of great power and uh you're probably going to save money on insurance you don't have a GT and is there other are there other parts like Beyond this coming down the pipeline are people doing big turbos yet on these things yeah so we've definitely seen Big Turbo stuff we have a lot of our Pro tuners that can make a custom tune for the access port uh they've been doing Big Turbo stuff where it's like 500 wheel horsepower in an eco oh that's got to be great but you're you know but then your power band becomes the more traditional top end big Power and you lose that kind of torque shove right yeah exactly so there's always that tradeoff um and so if you're going to take an EcoBoost Mustang to the drag strip or sector events or something like that and you want all that top in then get a big turbo and get a tune have you seen these things that running in like the tws yet what are they what are these run they run twelves uh with just uh we had a guy that ran a 12se second qu mile time stock EcoBoost Mustang only upgrades for panel filter and an E85 blend tune so he's running like E30 that's it nothing else stock exhaust stock intercooler 12 second and then we're that's fast yeah at like 110 or something so the access port you get custom launch control we have throttle cut launch control ignition cut launch control uh super easy to activate so that you can get wait can I do a launch in this is does it have launch control do you know how to do it uh yeah you just uh let's find a let's find a set of a quiet straight section and let's see if we can do it I'm down to try that or Fiesta S has launch control yeah uh okay this this will do I got good visibility behind me here okay so what do I do just uh first gear and smash the pedal and it should rev up oh it's holding yeah yeah it's like it's like like twep yeah there it is I you don't even have to press any buttons it's just there yeah built in uh cut and then if you uh all the Ford steering wheels confuse me you hold one of the buttons on the steering wheel and it'll do a throttle cut launch control too so the ignition cut one is actually going to build boost while you're stationary then you get a little bit of that off the launch that was a good launch actually it really did come off the line really nice yeah so in my Fest I hav it set at like 25,000 RPM because R Festa launch control is on a button you have to hold the like the one of the buttons and then do it this one there's no button yeah that's great it's just a just a different type of launch control that you want and so you can do both Styles in the Festa too so the whole Ford platform has the same feature set such an a light easy clutch you could drive this car every day this road Ro well good choice on the road Ian this is very nice definitely a good one in Austin yeah if you're watching in Austin you probably know what the road is well I was warned that there was a lot of cyclist up here but apparently that's just weekends yeah here's a nice mid-range torque shove up that hill Oh over blind Crest where does it go I don't know but I'm just leaving it in third here and I've got just like a really nice kind of torque surge going oh yeah yeah you know I like I like this car a lot and I I it was fun on the track I like it better as a road car I mean yeah this is a great car that you could drive all the time and have tons of fun in it's sort of like the new Sylvia a little bit I mean yeah it's heavier and it's bigger but you know same idea turbo 4 rear wheeel drive limited slip diff there's no other turbo 4 that's re wheel drive you can buy right now that's a good point there isn't is there no uh Lexus is coming out with one the 200t but that's you know that's still going to be 35 Grand this is really nice yeah and it doesn't it doesn't really seem like you lose anything it seems like it's got all the things that the car has from the factory and just a little more shov yeah I mean the best thing especially like the new turbocharged direct injected Motors is you can tune them you can make more power and when you're just cruising on the freeway it's still super efficient so you're not losing any miles per gallon we're we can make it more efficient because you can run direct injected cars a little leaner on the freeway yeah um so there's no downside more power I would agree with you and everything yeah I would agree with you I would just I would say you know if you want to if you want to get the car sideways and have fun with it that way keep the stock size tire that's that's the only recommendation and if you want to go drag racing or get more grip you can fit bigger tires and you can do that so you can choose your own adventure when it comes to that thanks Ian cool thank you thank you to you and all all the people at cob for having me down here in Texas uh the cars were fun the Porsche was nuts um this thing is this thing is great and uh now it's time for me to get on a plane and go back to California more one takes from the west side coming soon see you latermorning everybody Welcome to uh a beautiful Back Road outside of Austin Texas uh the guys feature set such an a light easy clutch you could drive this car every day this road Ro well good choice on the road Ian this is very nice definitely a good one in Austin yeah if you're watching in Austin you probably know what the road is well I was warned that there was a lot of cyclist up here but apparently that's just weekends yeah here's a nice mid-range torque shove up that hill Oh over blind Crest where does it go I don't know but I'm just leaving it in third here and I've got just like a really nice kind of torque surge going oh yeah yeah you know I like I like this car a lot and I I it was fun on the track I like it better as a road car I mean yeah this is a great car that you could drive all the time and have tons of fun in it's sort of like the new Sylvia a little bit I mean yeah it's heavier and it's bigger but you know same idea turbo 4 rear wheeel drive limited slip diff there's no other turbo 4 that's re wheel drive you can buy right now that's a good point there isn't is there no uh Lexus is coming out with one the 200t but that's you know that's still going to be 35 Grand this is really nice yeah and it doesn't it doesn't really seem like you lose anything it seems like it's got all the things that the car has from the factory and just a little more shov yeah I mean the best thing especially like the new turbocharged direct injected Motors is you can tune them you can make more power and when you're just cruising on the freeway it's still super efficient so you're not losing any miles per gallon we're we can make it more efficient because you can run direct injected cars a little leaner on the freeway yeah um so there's no downside more power I would agree with you and everything yeah I would agree with you I would just I would say you know if you want to if you want to get the car sideways and have fun with it that way keep the stock size tire that's that's the only recommendation and if you want to go drag racing or get more grip you can fit bigger tires and you can do that so you can choose your own adventure when it comes to that thanks Ian cool thank you thank you to you and all all the people at cob for having me down here in Texas uh the cars were fun the Porsche was nuts um this thing is this thing is great and uh now it's time for me to get on a plane and go back to California more one takes from the west side coming soon see you later\n"
