The Art of Tuning: A Deep Dive into Coilovers and Suspension
As I sit here in my garage, surrounded by the tools of my trade, I am excited to share with you my latest project: installing coilovers on my trusty Z car. For those who are new to the world of tuning, coilovers are a crucial component of any suspension system. They allow drivers to fine-tune the ride height and stiffness of their vehicle, giving them the edge they need to take their driving experience to the next level.
The process of installing coilovers is not rocket science, but it does require some finesse. I've done this before, and I can attest that it's a great feeling to have your car handling like a dream on the track. The digressive damping curve is essentially like tapers off up top, so you could have a car that feels pretty stiff, but when you hit bumps or high velocity, it gets really complex and comfortable. Essentially, that stiffness kind of tapers off up top, so when you hit those bumps, it doesn't bounce you all over your seat, but your car still feels stiff. It's like having the best of both worlds.
As I began the installation process, I couldn't help but think about how much my experience has changed over time. From a wide-eyed rookie to a seasoned pro, I've learned that there's always something new to discover, and coilovers are one of those things that can make or break your driving experience. In the past month alone, I've installed two different Zs, and each time it's been a learning curve.
One of the most important aspects of installing coilovers is finding the right ride height. This can be the most time-consuming part of the process, as you need to balance between having enough clearance for your wheels and not so much that you're scraping against the fenders. I ended up putting my Z at maximum low in both the front and rear, but that required some creativity on my part. In the front, I had to put a little cut into the fender to allow it to bend outwards, ensuring that the wheel wouldn't grab onto it. It's these small details that can make all the difference in the end.
Now that the coilovers are installed, I'm excited to take my Z for a spin and see how she handles. As always, I've been meticulous about fine-tuning every detail, from the toe-out on the front wheels to the camber on the rear. My usual spec is eighth inch toe out in the front and eighth inch toe in the rear, which provides just the right amount of grip and stability. I'm also excited to see how she performs under high velocity, as that's where coilovers really shine.
As I finish up this video, I want to assure my viewers that there's still a lot more to come. We've got an amazing lineup of content planned for the next week, and I can barely contain my excitement. And speaking of exciting, I'm getting close to hitting 2 million subscribers! If you have any ideas for special videos or content, please let me know in the comments below. I'd love to hear from you and make some magic happen.
But before I sign off, I want to thank each and every one of my viewers for their support and enthusiasm. It means the world to me, and I'm honored to be a part of this community. Until next time, stay tuned and keep on driving!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enalright guys welcome to today's video hey Taylor again we just roll up to the new BC warehouse or should I say the new BC palace it's really big I can't even see the parking lot so new it's like blinding me the first thing that comes out of Taylor's about why you gotta tell me yeah they had to make the pavement gray instead of black they wouldn't be able to tell but this place is sweet Taylor's gonna give me a little bit of a tour oh yeah true can we go in yeah all right let's go in so unfortunately we aren't able to give you guys a full tour like we promised Cody why can't we give them a tour okay so we can show the lobby though this is what Adam rooms and everything cuz he loves it and I love it too so I haven't won everything GameChanger pictures we were just talking about what I have to do get my car up there they want me to put a livery on it and run FD and then I can have my car and walk so I'm working on that that's my goal okay Cody is that Aaron got home fresh haircut some fresh coil overs we actually got something fresh new cool ish for Nicole in the truck look what came in do you know this is I just bleeped out what you said cuz it's gonna be a surprise what we're gonna use it for look at it come look up ready to unwrap it looks so good in retrospect you wish we put these in your car over the gold yeah I understand we would have had to change the whole theme Oh toga factory had like some of the last ones that they made it's another broad vertex clapper this one in pink and we got one for a special project as you guys can probably already guess we are doing a true coil over in the rear we already install the spring bucket delete arm so this is instead of a separate spring and shock for the front shocks Taylor helped me figure out some specs and we did a longer stroke as well as slightly stiffer Springs I believe these are 16 KS to compensate for the lack of sway bar since we can't have one with wise fab in the rear one looked like I said it a true coilover setup with 4k spring rates definitely a little bit softer just to get some extra grip and have a little bit better wheat transfer and of course these RBC's digressive des series i've talked about them in numerous videos but they ride much nicer around town and perform way better on the track with the digressive the damping curve essentially like tapers off up top so you could have a car that feels pretty stiff but when you hit bumps or when there's like high velocity it gets really complex the complainant but essentially that stiffness kind of tapers off up top so when you hit those bumps it doesn't bounce you all over your seat but your car still feels stiff so you have like a nicer turn in in a better feel for drifting I've done so many BC racing coilover installs and in the past month what we've done two different Z's so I think what I'm gonna do just to switch things up a little bit I'm gonna do a time lapse slash montage of the install on this car afterwards all you guys know if there's anything weird but I've already talked about installing coil there's so many times on these these I don't wanna be too appetitive just like that coal overs are all done everything was very self-explanatory it probably only took me maybe 20 minutes tops to actually install the coil errs but took the most time as always is finding the right ride height and aligning the car I wound up actually putting the car at maximum low both in the front and the rear the rear looks good but with 18s you have to be really low to not have much of a fender gap and like the exhaust is literally maybe an inch off the ground so I'll probably end up having to raise it but I'm kind of tired of realigning it today I'm probably just gonna leave it like this maybe do a little bit of testing at this height the front this is maximum low again because it's longer stroke it's a little bit higher what I ended up doing to make sure that I wouldn't be grabbing this fender in here I put a little cut so I could bend this fender out more and now the wheel doesn't grab at it but yeah I'm excited to go take it for a drive my Lyman specs that I pretty much do on all the cars is eighth inch toe out in the front eighth inch toe in the rear for some grip and I'm excited to see how she drives I might put a steering wheel in tonight I don't know I got a pack for California so I'm kind of probably shouldn't be but um I might just go take it for a spin just to see how straight it drives inside the garage it might give you a little bit better idea of ride height I love how it looks in the front but it's gonna have to come up in the rear we're almost tucking tire I actually have the camber arms maxed out for positive camber and at this height it honestly looks exactly where I want it to be like maybe yeah it almost like zero I normally like to have like positive 1/2 degree camber so when it squats a zeroes out but I don't know ok got late and we have to wake up soon for our trip and of course right now I'm just now finishing the video and I wasn't able to get anything else done on the 350z I'm very sorry I got the coil over situated still gonna have to play around with the ride height do a couple other little minor things and it should be ready to take out on the track but I just wanted to let you guys know that I have been a little bit secretive about some stuff that'll be going on over this next week all I can really say is we have an awesome line up of just rad stuff that I've kind of planned that should make some really cool content I know we're getting close to 2 million subscribers and I have absolutely no idea of any sort of special video I can do for 2 million subscribers so if you have any ideas let me know I'll do my best to think of something but anyway thank you guys for watching I hope you enjoyed the video a little bit different I appreciate you and I wish you tomorrow in some euros out but the my best to
