Why the EPIC Caterham 620S is the ULTIMATE Drivers Car ! _ 4K

**The Joy of Driving: A Love Letter to the Krum 620**

It's no secret that I have always been fascinated by the Krum 620, a car that embodies the spirit of driving as an art form. When I finally got behind the wheel of one, I was immediately struck by its sheer majesty. The engine, with its 310 horsepower, is a beast that demands to be tamed – or at least, handled with care.

The road it calls home is equally magnificent, winding through hills and valleys like a serpent through the landscape. As you navigate the twists and turns, the car's sticky tires provide just enough grip to make you feel alive, like very few cars can. The experience is almost meditative, as if the world has slowed down to match the rhythm of the engine.

But it's not just about the speed – although, let's be honest, that's a big part of it. The real magic happens when you're crawling up hills or navigating tight corners, where the car's subtle nuances become apparent. The little frog eyes of the headlights cast an eerie glow on the road ahead, while the top of the wheels' movement creates a mesmerizing dance of light and shadow.

And then there's the ride quality – surprisingly good, considering this is a car from another era. It's not perfect, mind you; you can feel every bump in the road, but that's part of its charm. The car covers ground so well, dealing with bumps relatively well, and it's clear that it was designed to be driven, not just transported.

But what really sets the Krum 620 apart is its lack of safety features – specifically, ABS. This means you need to be super careful when braking or accelerating, lest you lock up the wheels and lose control. It's a sobering reminder that driving isn't always about speed; sometimes it's about finesse.

As I drove through the autumnal landscape, watching leaves turn golden brown on either side of the road, I couldn't help but feel like I was experiencing something special. This car is a time capsule, a connection to a bygone era when driving was an art form, not just a means to get from point A to point B.

I've had the chance to take this car out for drive several times, and each time, it's been a thrill. Whether I'm cruising down the highway or tackling tight corners, the Krum 620 is always a joy to drive. And when you factor in its unique character – that subtle growl of the engine, the way the headlights cast an otherworldly glow on the road ahead – it's clear why this car has captured so many hearts.

Of course, not everyone will appreciate the Krum 620's quirks and charms. Some may find it too much to handle, especially in damp conditions or when pushed too hard. But for those who understand its unique character, this car is a dream come true.

**The Sweet Spot: Why the Krum 420s/420r Would be My Ideal**

As I reflect on my experience with the Krum 620, I'm struck by how much it exceeds expectations. And yet, for some of us, that's exactly why it's not perfect – too much power can be overwhelming, especially in a car that's designed to be driven rather than just driven quickly.

That's why, if I had to choose a different Krum model, I'd opt for the 420s or 420r. These cars have only 200 horsepower, which makes them feel more approachable and less intimidating than their larger counterparts. With the same power-to-weight ratio as the 620, but with significantly less power, the 420s/420r would be an absolute dream to drive.

For me, this sweet spot lies in the balance between performance and handling. The 420s/420r offers a sense of agility and responsiveness that's hard to find elsewhere – it's like the car is dancing on its suspension, with just enough grip to keep you connected to the road. And yet, it's not so powerful that you need to be a driving prodigy to enjoy it.

**Driving at Night: A Car That Spits Flames**

One of my favorite features of the Krum 620 is its ability to spit flames when driven under nighttime conditions – it's an unforgettable sight, with sparks flying from beneath the car like miniature fireworks. It's almost surreal, as if the very fabric of reality has been altered by the presence of this magnificent machine.

Driving at night in the Krum 620 is like entering a different world altogether. The lights are so bright that they create a hypnotic effect on the road ahead, while the flames under the car add an element of danger and excitement to the driving experience. It's exhilarating, yet somehow also strangely calm – as if the car has taken over, with you simply along for the ride.

**Final Impressions: Can You Handle a Krum 620?**

As I wrap up my time with the Krum 620, I'm left wondering whether it's truly a car for everyone. While it's clear that this model has captured many hearts – including mine – it's not without its quirks and challenges.

The lack of ABS is just one aspect to consider; the car requires more finesse than outright brute force when driving. It's a delicate balance between speed, handling, and control – and one that only some drivers will be able to master.

But for those who appreciate the art of driving as much as I do, the Krum 620 is an absolute dream come true. Whether you're cruising through the countryside or tackling tight corners, this car is sure to leave you grinning from ear to ear – if not maybe a little bit breathless too.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: ennow for those of you who've been moaning about the amount of EV content on the channel recently this is your antidote hey guys and welcome to petrol ped and welcome to the utterly insane cerum 620s no electric cars in this episode my friends just pure petrol head Heaven A I love caterans but this one this one's an absolute animal woohoo this is a bit of an experiment really for those of you who been tuning into my dream garage build I thought I'd film it in my dream garage and you may well know that I had a slight issue with the door width of the garage and to be Frank this is probably one of the few cars that would have fitted through the old doors the doors are now much wider the work isn't quite finished yet there's still lots of Builder mess in the background but I thought you know I'd put the car under my new lights on the floor and we'd go for filming inside now I want to talk talk to you a little bit about katum and my love affair of this car which started many years ago when I was at University with a Westfield actually um I had a friend of mine who had one he took me for a drive up the road one dark summers's evening and just blew my mind and from that moment on I had to have a katrum I went to the motor show at the NEC back in the day and sat in one sat in the HPC which was new that year the high performance katrum it had the voxal Red Top in it an amazing amazing car I had a picture on the wall in my student digs of a I just loved them and I knew that one day I'd own one and that day came that day came quite a few years ago now uh a friend of mine and I bought a burnt Lamborghini orange katrum super light with the 1.6 L Sigma engine in it had the throttle bodies 150 horsepower and a amazing car absolutely love that car I did my first competitive Motorsport event in that car the Goodwood spring Sprint and I loved it unfortunately circumstances changed after about a year and we had to we had to get rid of the car and it was a very sad day when that car left to go back to katrum to be sold but a few years later YouTube had started for me and I managed to get a press car from katrum I got the 620r the one that looks like the Lego model I had about 2 weeks with that car I broke it I snapped both drive shafts but I also took it to Vmax 200 um and drove it down the runway at 160 mph I loved it it was an incredible car but absolutely ballistic so fast and then a couple of years after that I managed to race a katrum with a katrum graduates at Silverstone and that was an amazing weekend so I've had my fair share of katrum experiences but the 620 r that I had still redefined my understanding of what a fast car is and what driving engagement and visceral feeling in a car but it was just too much for the road so I've always wanted to get my hands on the 620s so let's Deep dive into what's the difference between the S and the r the details of this car in particular and then we'll go back to earlier today when I was out enjoying the last of the Autumn sunshine on some of the best roads in West Sussex so the big difference between the S and the r is basically the level of comfort but also this so in the r there's a sixspeed sequential gearbox and in the S you've got a 5-speed manual you'll also typically find the S has a wind screen and weather gear and the ability to have a roof on it when the r tends to have an arrow screen however when you buy buy one of these you can configure so many things if you wanted one of these screens on an R you could if you wanted an arrow screen on an S you could but the argument is the S is just that little bit more I don't know Road friendly we'll talk more about this when we get out driving but the r with the sequential box is amazing when you're on it and amazing on track but in normal driving conditions especially around town and stuff it's a real pain and it makes a hell of a hell of a racket whereas this is a little bit more civilized they both however have the same engine so this is a 2 L Ford durch now you find the same engine as this in the 620 Krum the big difference is this has a Supercharger so this engine produces 310 horsepower and 297 newon M of torque now the question is what's the 620 bit mean well you would think and most people think that that means 620 horsepower per ton and for that to be the case this car would have to weigh 500 kilos but it doesn't now it's very spec dependent but these are typically around about 610 kilos so that means they actually have a BHP per ton figure of around about 508 which is still ridiculous but yeah don't be fooled the 620 does not actually mean 620 horsepower per ton but it's still Sensational performance other things that Mark the 620 katrum from other cars in the range first thing is this little Inlet here on the nose cone such an iconic part of the car I always love the little seven logo just there and then the other thing you get these little carbon canards here just a little bit of Arrow and car around the lights and the lenses these LED headlights are a lot better than the lights that I had on my car that's for sure but yeah just a I just love the front of these things one of the things with this car being so low is I'm having to do a lot of crouching down um when was the last time you drove a car with 13in wheels I mean the brake discs on a lot of performance cars nowadays are bigger than the entire wheel so it's got quite small discs up front they are quite powerful they're four piston calipers but no ABS so you're on your own in terms of brake feel and locking up and all those types of things I love the exposed wishbones but then the other standout feature for me is this exposed exhaust that runs all the way down the driver's side of the car pops Flames might have to try that a bit later but yeah just uh just when you're driving the exhaust is literally just there and the noise and the involvement then you look out the wind screen and you see the wing on the top of the wheels moving up and down as the wheel it's just awesome now this car has been speced with I think they call it the track day rollover cage so you've got these strengthening braces in some of the lower powered krums you might not get that cross brace here and if you look at the racing krums then they have a full cage now you could spec one of those maybe if you are specking an R if you specked an S with one of those that's all well and good it just just makes getting in and out of the car more challenging and getting into the car is pretty challenging anyway especially when you're 6' 3 okay time to get in the car going to put the door that way you can drive it with the doors off I've never been a fan of doing that I find it's particularly blowy and in the wintry conditions we are in at the moment it's also quite cold next up quite useful you take the steering wheel off that just allows you to kind of get your legs in and out a little bit more easily and then in terms of the harnesses this is where I don't know so this has got the tillet seats in and the harness buckles if you don't have them laid out nicely they kind of dig into your hips so I'm going to just move the harness buckles out and then you can basically put your foot either on the seat or just onto the floor in front of the seat and then you just hold the bottom straps up and you kind of jiggle your way in like that very snug fit and then you can connect all your harnesses and so on now it's not too bad getting in and out however it's it makes you realize how convenient modern day big cars are the the till it seats they're not the comfiest for me and I'll talk more when we go out and about on the road this car is very cramped for me but I don't care Dash wise none of your Apple carplay rubbish no radio there's a really good heater there's a heated front wind screen which works very well uh you've got a couple of dials one showing your rev counter now this car has the shift up lights which is an absolute must if you're buying a katrum always expect the shift up lights you drive by those I never look at the rev counter at all and then the speedo the digits are quite small and things happen very quickly on the speedo and then you got all these toggle switches here which is so old school and then some really interesting gauges you got a fuel gauge it's got quite a small fuel tank in it it only cost like 25 quid to fill up and that disappears really quickly especially when you are on it and then you got a couple of temperature gauges there for oil and water so I reckon it's time to drive the car this video is all about driving you're bored of me talking about the car now let's go back to earlier on today and show me having some fun this car's awesome fact I quite feel like going out for a drive now actually oh how I've missed this on a sunny day for a petrad there is nothing better than going for a drive in a cater room the connection you get between the car yourself the road the environment is unsurpassed if I say visceral too many times in this review I'm going to apologize for it right now but these things are pure driving Joy there's nothing in here to support you there's no ABS there's no traction control it's just you and the car and I know if you go back in time to the days of the original Lotus 7 and Colin Chapman they weren't anywhere near this powerful it was all about lightweight it was all about handling and cornering amazing things I mentioned before I had a 150 horsepower KR from super light absolutely adored that car and for me that car down a road you could just oh you could connect with it on another level but after a while I began to want more it wasn't powerful enough it didn't have quite the performance and on track it definitely lacked these things aren't the most aerodynamic vehicles in the world so when you don't have a huge amount of power aerrow takes over but in the katum range there are lesser powered cars that all deliver that driving pleasure and that driving enjoyment with the 620 that's another animal an animal is probably the right word in this video I want to explore if it's too to much I spent a couple of weeks with the 620r a few years ago and did all kinds of cool stuff I did 160 m an hour in one of these on a Runway had the arrow screen it had a sequential gearbox an amazing amazing car but on the road it was way too much the gearbox made a horrible noise at low speed he didn't like it unless he was being thrashed within an inch of its life was this this has got a 5-speed manual this should be much more Road friendly I will say though this narrow format chassis is a real squeeze I am a reasonably tender chat you have to do that a lot and it's a squeeze for me I'm also quite long in the leg so it's very cramped in here you can probably see my hand foul with my legs on the steering wheel and when I raced one of these with The katrum Graduate a couple of years ago that was a real problem to me and with these tillet seats I think it's exacerbated I'm sure my car was a little bit more roomy the other thing is they do a wide bodyi variant of the cater of the SV I think for comfort and for anyone with a slightly larger frame that's an absolute must because quite frankly unless you're relatively slim you're not going to fit in one of these but when you come down a road like this the noise I got the exhaust pipe literally just there and once the car's warmed up it's just a magnificent thing you can come into a corner you can heel and Tow and then when you come out the other side a wow this makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up it makes the adrenaline C through your veins and it makes you feel alive like very few cars can it's a magnificent magnificent machine okay let's have some fun down one of my favorite roads see you have to be so careful with the throttle in this the road's damp in places it's not the warmest days today I've got very sticky tires but this car will overwhelm the Grid in the first three gears that's kind of why almost it's got a bit too much power really you have to be so careful on the throttle but when you come around the corners and a you don't even have to drive that fast down the road like this you got the brilliant view out the front you've got the little frog eyes of the lights you can see the top of the wings of the wheels moving up and down it's just cool but on throttle you have to be so careful surprisingly good ride quality it's bumpy in here don't get me wrong but it does it does cover the ground so well and deals with the bumps relatively well the thing you have to be super careful of we're so spoiled these days with modern cars with things like ABS right this car doesn't have abs so if you come into a corner too hot and just smash your foot on the brake you just lock up and then you have to remember Cadence breaking but this road is so cool with a leaves turning Autumn golden brown this is what driving about for me krum's are ultimate driving pleasure just you and the car and the road wow I still say when I have my Krum it's the only car I've ever own where I would literally take it out for the sole purpose of going for a drive because it was that lovely when I had my car it was before we lived where we did and we used to drive out here onto this road just to do this hill it's like going back into time it's wicked here we go zip it in a these these things go around corners like they're on Rails there we go little bit a wheel spin in the back there oh boy oh boy God I love these things now let me just demonstrate to you why you need to be so careful in one of these I'm going to go down into first gear I'm going to do a rolling pull away wait for that car to go in just a rolling pull away and see a you spin the wheels up in third so there is an argument to say as much of a hoot as this is you really do need to be on it you need to have really sharp reactions very gentle inputs to the throttler especially in damp conditions and for me that's why I think the 620 as much fun as it is I think it's just a little bit too much I think for me The Sweet Spot in the katrum range if you are a performance car fan would be a 420s or a 420r they have just over 200 horsepower instead of 310 in a car that weighs the same and that's where that Monica comes from the power to weight ratio and I think 420 for me would be the absolute sweet spot if you go down to the 300 or the 320 as it's now known I think if you're a real performance car fan after a while you'll want more but I mean seriously this car it's like a legal drop oh just magificent by the way one of the really cool things is if you drive it at nighttime it spits flames oh where spit in thir H wow this I mean this is a car that just makes you feel like a driving God ah final impressions of the Kum 620s I'm I'm the last press person to have this car this year it's going to go go get wrapped up for the winter CU you don't want to drive one of these in the winter I've been so lucky with the weather it's relatively dry it's reasonably warm and and and and it's okay you don't drive this car in the wet you don't drive it in the cold unless you want to have a massive accident but I just love catam there's just something about them that is a lot of people don't get it a lot of people really just don't understand the the the joy of a catr or even the why you would want one but if you've owned one or even if you've been a passenger in one they're a very special thing and they put a massive smile on your face I hope you've enjoyed that as much as I have I'm sorry I haven't had too many drive-bys and things this is particularly difficult car to get in and out on quickly but if you've enjoyed that please give me a thumbs up comments below are always welcome if you haven't done so already please subscribe to peted for plenty more content to come and I'll see you on the next film take care guys Rock safe wonow for those of you who've been moaning about the amount of EV content on the channel recently this is your antidote hey guys and we're so spoiled these days with modern cars with things like ABS right this car doesn't have abs so if you come into a corner too hot and just smash your foot on the brake you just lock up and then you have to remember Cadence breaking but this road is so cool with a leaves turning Autumn golden brown this is what driving about for me krum's are ultimate driving pleasure just you and the car and the road wow I still say when I have my Krum it's the only car I've ever own where I would literally take it out for the sole purpose of going for a drive because it was that lovely when I had my car it was before we lived where we did and we used to drive out here onto this road just to do this hill it's like going back into time it's wicked here we go zip it in a these these things go around corners like they're on Rails there we go little bit a wheel spin in the back there oh boy oh boy God I love these things now let me just demonstrate to you why you need to be so careful in one of these I'm going to go down into first gear I'm going to do a rolling pull away wait for that car to go in just a rolling pull away and see a you spin the wheels up in third so there is an argument to say as much of a hoot as this is you really do need to be on it you need to have really sharp reactions very gentle inputs to the throttler especially in damp conditions and for me that's why I think the 620 as much fun as it is I think it's just a little bit too much I think for me The Sweet Spot in the katrum range if you are a performance car fan would be a 420s or a 420r they have just over 200 horsepower instead of 310 in a car that weighs the same and that's where that Monica comes from the power to weight ratio and I think 420 for me would be the absolute sweet spot if you go down to the 300 or the 320 as it's now known I think if you're a real performance car fan after a while you'll want more but I mean seriously this car it's like a legal drop oh just magificent by the way one of the really cool things is if you drive it at nighttime it spits flames oh where spit in thir H wow this I mean this is a car that just makes you feel like a driving God ah final impressions of the Kum 620s I'm I'm the last press person to have this car this year it's going to go go get wrapped up for the winter CU you don't want to drive one of these in the winter I've been so lucky with the weather it's relatively dry it's reasonably warm and and and and it's okay you don't drive this car in the wet you don't drive it in the cold unless you want to have a massive accident but I just love catam there's just something about them that is a lot of people don't get it a lot of people really just don't understand the the the joy of a catr or even the why you would want one but if you've owned one or even if you've been a passenger in one they're a very special thing and they put a massive smile on your face I hope you've enjoyed that as much as I have I'm sorry I haven't had too many drive-bys and things this is particularly difficult car to get in and out on quickly but if you've enjoyed that please give me a thumbs up comments below are always welcome if you haven't done so
