The Author's Journey with the Lamborghini Espada
As I sat behind the wheel of the Lamborghini Espada, I couldn't help but think about how much this car had surprised me. From the moment I first laid eyes on it, I knew that it was going to be a special ride. The original owners of the Espada were known for their cigars and other personal items that they would leave in the car, which often included things like a lighter that could actually light up big Havana cigars. This feature alone was unique and fascinating to me.
As I started the engine, I couldn't help but notice how smooth it was. The sound of the V12 engine was music to my ears, and I felt a sense of excitement wash over me as I prepared for our journey across Europe. One of the things that struck me most about this car was its speedometer. A 10,000 RPM red line was prominently displayed on the dashboard, which seemed unusually high even by today's standards. But what really caught my attention was the speedometer itself, which was spot-on accurate to within a tenth of a mile per hour at 100 miles per hour.
The Espada's design was also unlike anything I had seen before. One of the features that stood out to me was the ability to open the vents on the bonnet to let in fresh air into the cabin. This was a clever touch that added to the car's overall sense of elegance and sophistication. Another feature that caught my eye was the water tap underneath the hood, which allowed you to turn off the heating system with just a few twists of the handle.
As I continued our journey across Europe, I couldn't help but compare the Espada to other cars from the same era, such as Ferrari's 330 GT and Lamborghini's 400 GT. While both of these cars were certainly impressive in their own right, there was something about the Espada that set it apart. Perhaps it was the finesse of its details, or the sheer power of its V12 engine. Whatever the reason, I found myself falling more and more in love with this car as our journey progressed.
One of the things that struck me most about driving the Espada was its unique suspension system, which allowed for a level of comfort and stability that was unmatched by other cars from the same era. In fact, I found that it was better on suspension than some of my other favorite cars, including Ferrari's 2+2 model. This was a testament to the Espada's innovative design, which had clearly been done with the driver in mind.
As we drove across Europe, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and adventure. The Espada seemed to come alive on the road, its engine purring smoothly as it devoured the miles. It was like driving a Daytona, but without the added horsepower and weight that made the Daytona so well-known. In fact, I often found myself wishing that the Espada had a bit more oomph under the hood, which would have made it an even more formidable roadster.
Despite its unique looks and capabilities, the Espada seemed to be a car that was always meant to be appreciated by those who truly understood it. The owner of this particular Espada had told me that he had once owned a Ferrari 1968, which had been equally impressive in its own right. However, there was something about the Espada that made it feel more special, more exclusive even.
As I reflected on our journey together, I couldn't help but think about the man behind Lamborghini Automobiles, Ferruccio Lamborghini. It's been 50 years since he formed his company, and what a legacy he has left behind. From the iconic Miura to the Aventador, Lamborghini cars have always been known for their unique blend of style, performance, and innovation. And at the heart of it all was Ferruccio's passion for creating machines that were truly special.
In the end, my journey with the Espada had been a truly unforgettable experience. It had exceeded my expectations in every way, from its incredible speed to its comfortable ride. As I looked back on our adventures across Europe, I knew that this car would always hold a special place in my heart. And as for Ferruccio Lamborghini's legacy, it was clear that he would continue to inspire car enthusiasts around the world for years to come.

it actually callers quite flatly which is not a surprise when you just see how low this thing is um anyway we'll continue up and we'll do we'll do a little bit more gets a bit tighter but on the open stretches and on the aut route coming across um Italy this thing is absolute hooped what it does best is actually high-speed cruising on the hair pins it's all a bit of a struggle 350 horsepower remember um at 79 um not a huge amount of talk basically the mura engine on smaller carburetors so slightly choked hasn't got the torque and weighs 1650 kilos and he's to carry four people rather than set the ultimate time up a hill climb but all great fun anyway let's go and do some more just put the windows up so you can sort of hear me one of the things you have to remember on cars at this age is braking isn't the Forte brakes have improved hugely over the years but there's a there's a softness to the handling to the cars of this vintage sits on 70 aspect tires and there a it's just a lovely elastic feeling as you sort of get close to the limit of adhesion say on these very new red SS they're um 20575 there's quite a lot of grip actually you just feel a slight movement because of the sidewalls being at 70 aspect it's a great M Road there's some guys over on the tour they come over from New Zealand and they couldn't go back to New Zealand till they've driven the route Napoleon you can sort of understand why power it through really stable doesn't even think about stepping the back out on this thing it's got a limited slip but it's just a four-wheel drift machine in the dry like this in we go pitch it in rolls say it doesn't roll nearly as much as you expect oh dear it's one of these funny funny little cars with last pass yeah they're allowed to drive them on a funny license the age4 but they're limited to about well 40 clicks or something 30 mph wish we had roads like this in the UK anyway it gives you a little taste of blasting and as SP across the route the podium right so that's one tank done clear this one over here and when you finish chopping this one up you move back to the other one sometimes you just squeeze a little bit forward there you go well if you ever find yourself lucky enough to be doing the root Theon this is a great place to stop it's um castellan it's on the route little village and it's a little sleepy sort of Market town it's great place for lunches cafes everywhere you look and um it's famous for having this sort of church on top of a rock so it's dead easy to see as you come into uh castellan this incredible Church on top of a rock as they tend to do out here and it has this uh the Green River going through it which is self-explanation when you see it because it really is green and there the verdict Valley goes off from here with a famous bridge over it just named after this river which is truly green cuz it's all coming off the glassiers up in the Alps further up um but anyway I just recommend it as a superb place to stop loads of cafes to choose from what a wild Road this is as far is not quite suited to it but it's all good fun we have Road works just flash wase yes almost had the Italian job there how funny a no power steering you certainly need a big steering wheel to get you around these hair pins quite got the torque to bring you out the Cor it's not too bad really long thr gear change it's not to be rushed the other thing that's different to the contach has a really nice pedals um super smooth Thro action it's very easy to heal and Tow in this car it's just right the right hand dry contast is just ril and being pretty rubbish that's not the case here still a great noise listening to that buor V12 howling up to 7,000 Cally a bit higher amazing views up here you get the weather rights we have today the thing that gets you about this road it's really quite long it's 80 100 km like this here we are top again how high are we yeah 1148 m well after the fabulous weather we had for rot Napoleon yesterday we stopped in bone last night and we' working up to this sort of gray and a bit of rain uh for the long SLO well it's mainly Motorway here to Cal and then obviously Motorway in the UK um before we go in I always have to do a sort of pre-flight checks on it I just love lifting the Bonnet on this aser anyway you look in those six giant weers sort of you know presented with you in the V12 of it um so just a quite like the way they they've Chrome the oil uh dip stick yet we saw down here I just grabbed the camera um hiding right down in there I can see a spark plug I don't know if you can see that um yeah can we see that there spark plug hiding down there which means there's been a lead off so we've been on 11 cylinders at some point yesterday I don't know when I'm just going to fit around and just get that final 12 cylinder on board uh that's the funny thing with a V12 if you lose one pot you don't really notice it's slightly embarrassing but there we go right we've got we'll have all 12 cylinders now good yeah miserable day but let's yeah time to hit the road great thing about the pay and just give you an excuse to go through the gears breaks a monopoly of the French aut oh only you can just continue of cruise sort of speed this car is capable of that's it next 200 to car it's not quite as noisy in here as it camera might suggest but it's re me know it's bit of wind Rush going on this camera T to pick up everything it's very simple but I love the this car's got this moood room and it just gives a sort of Airy feel to the cabage going through these and just watching the palm trees go by it's pretty matching anyway Hold On Carry On Up crch Next 2 hours and is the trip on the ferry we've arrived at Cal we're now waiting for the ferry to arrive and I thought while we're doing that I'll give you a quick tour of the dashboard because it's taken me about 6 months to learn that what all these sort of knobs and switches do cuz they're not like other cars so if you look down here this is the first one that really got me cuz this is like a double rear sta strange thing one actually increases the backl of the DS well that makes sense then this little tiny one inside here well that actually increases the how bright the warning lights are which is I've never seen another car before that one's fairly straightforward does the headlights and then this cigarette like well we thought it didn't work cuz you plug a TomTom in there it doesn't work but actually it's enormous and it's a high high power cigarette light which I presume for owners to you know original owners had their cigars and things that was the only thing that would actually light a big Havana cigar um wi screen wipers out straightforward um delay uh on the windc screen wipers quite unusual no red line on the taco 10,000 RPM and we go right over to the other end there's this enormous Speedo and a real shock because it's absolutely spot-on accurate so I've never known on a Italian car before um within a tenth of a mph at 100 milph just peculiar down here we have um this thing opens the vents on the Bonnet on the outside that's actually just fresh air coming to the inside cabin and underneath here is a water tap and uh that's how you turn the hea in on and off again it's uh it's unusual but it's typical of the period on I had a Ferrari of 1968 and on that one it was even worse cuz to open to put the heater on in that car you had to stop open the Bonnet and open some Taps under the Bonnet and then you had heat inside they all very peculiar these sort of 68 70 cars this car is 1970 anyway no it looks like we're loading anyway Here Comes UK righty where we going now going to get a sea view on the way across think the SP probably go Rusty I see oh my Lord oh there's no spray there you are hope you enjoy the view right well we made it I reckon that was about 1,400 miles 4 days of Adventure my favorite thing to you know really get to know a car and boy do we know the aspart now um it surprised me actually it's it's an even better Cruiser on the motorway I expected and then on that route Napoleon that was pretty I was having a ball up there uh and I can't help but compare this car to the 330 I had that Ferrari 330 2 plus2 and once I'd had to go in the 400 GT um Lamborghini at the factory I thought oh actually this is actually quite a nice car perhaps I ought to have a look in the SP and that's why I got it in the first place and between the two the one thing that the Ferrari 3 30 has over the Lamborghinis it's just the in the F finesse of its details it's beautifully constructed the Ferrari but it's the engine it's that bseri mura V12 engine 4 L 350 hpower in this thing that makes the aspara a special car for me yes it's a crazy staring as well and also it's actually better on suspension than the Ferrari um which sort of came out when we were up in root Napoleon cuz the the Ferraris of this period had live axles and leaf springs we' got independent suspension here and I'm just so pleased to be able to have said yeah I've done a big journey in the ESP on the some of the best roads in Europe but W what what a car this has been I the only way I can describe it it's it's bit like a Daytona um it's a soft version of a Daytona Daytona's bit more horsepower bit lighter but not exceptionally lighter than this I put this on the scales recently it was 1640 kilos ready to go with fuel but it is a wacky looking car I never I know all the time I've owned it I can't get used to the looks of it and it is peculiar and it sits so low you never get used you sit it in see it in petrol stations and things you think wa what a thing but it's so nice to be able to report that it seems to work as well I wanted this as an S2 I wanted the S2 because you get the M Wheels of the S2 and I think they're sort of essential to the looks but I keep coming back to it it's the engine that makes this special there it is in all its Glory let see if it'll do me a favor and actually see if we can start it up yeah there we go I love the mechanical of it if you get a hold of this that great you look at all those special levers all moving I think it's only right that I dedic the trip to fuo Lamborghini and what he did 50 years ago in forming Lamborghini automobile and bringing us these great cars that we've seen over the last few days the mura the asarda kach diabo I mean the list goes on and on isn't it I mean merilo let's let's go bring it right up to date and the gardo and the Aventador the sort of Wild Streak of
