New EU laws to force HUGE new features into iOS (alternate app stores, side loading & more!)

The Convenience of Signal and Telegram

It's great to have options when it comes to messaging apps, and two popular alternatives to the traditional iPhone messaging experience are Signal and Telegram. Signal is actually really convenient because you can text people from any device, whether it's your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC. This flexibility makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family, regardless of where you happen to be. The group chat feature in both Signal and Telegram is also excellent, allowing for seamless communication with multiple people at once.

Telegram has a particularly useful feature that sets it apart from other messaging apps: the ability to create one-to-many text threads or chats. This means that if someone, like John Mayer, wants to share updates or messages with their fans without being able to engage in real-time conversations, Telegram makes it easy to do so. Imagine John Mayer having his own Telegram channel where he can share updates and connect with his fans - it's actually a pretty cool idea! However, this feature does come with some limitations, as fans wouldn't be able to chat back or respond to each other.

Another exciting feature of Telegram is its ability to send out hardware restock alerts. This means that if someone is trying to get their hands on a PS5 or Xbox Series X, they can sign up for the service and receive notifications when those devices are available at certain retailers. It's a handy feature that can save people a lot of time and frustration.

Now, let's talk about some of the more significant changes that could come out of this legislation. The Digital Markets Act is focused on cracking down on Apple's dominance in the app store market. This could lead to major changes for Apple's business model, including the requirement to allow alternate app stores and payment systems. One of the most exciting potential changes would be the ability to side-load apps on iPhones and iPads. Currently, this feature is available on Macs, but not on iOS devices. Allowing users to install sanctioned or unsanctioned apps on their iPhones could revolutionize the way people access and use apps.

Some experts argue that allowing app side-loading on iOS would actually make things more secure, as users would be able to choose which apps they want to install on their device without relying on Apple's approval process. Others point out that this feature is already available on Macs, so it's not like it's a radical new concept. Regardless, the potential for increased competition and innovation in the app store market could have significant implications for Apple's business.

In recent weeks, we've seen some interesting developments from Apple. They've added links to their own websites for third-party payments within popular apps like Netflix and Spotify. This move suggests that Apple is starting to crack down on its dominance in the app store market and may be more willing to allow alternative payment systems in the future.

The scrutiny of Apple's business practices has been growing in recent years, with governments around the world looking into ways to regulate the company's behavior. The Digital Markets Act is just one example of this trend, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out. Will Apple continue to resist changes that could limit its dominance in the app store market, or will they adapt to new regulations and emerge stronger as a result? Only time will tell.

As for iMessage, there's been speculation about how it might work with third-party messaging apps like WhatsApp. While it's unclear exactly how this would all come together, it's likely that it would require significant engineering efforts from Apple and the developers of other messaging apps. The idea of a seamless integration between these platforms is intriguing, but also raises questions about user experience and security.

One thing is for sure - the world of technology is always evolving, and changes in one area can have far-reaching implications for others. As we move forward, it'll be interesting to see how Apple adapts to changing regulations and market demands. Will they continue to prioritize their own interests, or will they find a way to work with other companies and regulators to create a more open and competitive app store ecosystem? Only time will tell.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eni'll just do this one quick because i didn't want to have a huge conversation about this but this is definitely an interesting development in the world of apple uh there are plans in place in the eu to force imessage to work with whatsapp and other messagings other messaging apps and as part of this this new legislation that's that's being crafted it's called the digital markets act and it's trying to force apple google meta and microsoft to be more balanced i guess is is what they say their word's not mine and to make their technology play more fairly with other technology like imessage working with other messaging apps and to basically bust their control over their own marketplaces and their devices and the idea is that they would force imessage to work with other apps including like whatsapp and stuff which you know imessage is something that keeps you in the apple ecosystem because it's such a great app although you know i i find that i actually don't use imessage as much these days because i'm actually annoyed that it's only available on apple products because i often have to work on a pc like i'm on a pc right now the commander you can't really do live streams well from a mac right now now you might be able to do it from the mac studio but the the the application that we use the live stream live stream the show obs which is what everyone uses it just works better on the pc and and so if anyone texts me i can't reply to them from the pc which is really annoying i wish apple would just release some kind of pc app that you could use to message people in imessage maybe not android screw those guys but at least pc right jeez like i don't think that's that odd i mean they're including new features icloud features on the pc in fact they have an icloud uh past password manager now on the pc which is which works great now you can like create passwords on your pc that sync with icloud and will be available on your iphone and and mac so they're clearly working on some tools for the pc so so now i've been using like telegram i've been telling people to use telegram so that i can text them from from whatever device i use and it's actually great man it's like i mean i can't facetime with them obviously but it's really so convenient to be able to text people from no matter from any device that i have like my iphone my ipad my mac my pc and i can just send messages back and forth a signal is also really great i mean the group chat um features in both signal and in telegram are really good and i mentioned before like telegram has this really cool feature where you can create like one-to-many um text threads or or chats so like if you want to follow like let's say you're a huge fan of john mayer i know a guy who's a huge fan of john mayer little suspect little suspect loves the guy loves john mayer john mayer could start his own telegram channel in fact maybe he has one and he could just send messages out to everyone who follows him now they can't chat back they can't chat with each other but they can get messages from john mayer like that's actually kind of useful i mean not if you're wanting stuff from john mayer i mean i don't really want anything from john mayer but there is there is a service that i follow that sends out hardware um restock alerts so like if you're trying to get like a ps5 or like an xbox series x they'll text you as soon as those come back in stock at certain retailers and then everyone on the channel gets it that's actually really handy so telegram has that feature anyway back to the story at hand there are some other features in here in this in this legislation the digital marketing or markets act excuse me that seemed to really be focused on cracking open apple's hold on their on their devices and their marketplaces so i think part of this legislation would be forcing them to allow alternate app stores alternate payment systems and side loading which would be crazy that's something that i would love to see come to the um to the iphone and the ipad so you can install apps that apple doesn't officially sanction and approve through itunes because like i don't know i said this before i won't i won't go into the whole spiel again but it's like it's your device if you want to side load an app on it like you do on the mac or you install apps that aren't sanctioned by apple they let you do that why not allow you to do it on the iphone it doesn't make any sense to me you can do it on the mac why can't you do anything on the iphone it seems like it would it they shouldn't have parody there so sensitive i know that's what they always say right there's always like the security stuff like oh it will make it less secure i'm like well well the mac allows it so clearly you can figure it out you just don't want to and and i think what they really don't want to do obviously is they don't want competing marketplaces because and they don't want you to not be able to pay them when you buy an app for the iphone because right now every single thing that you buy they get a cut of and they don't want to relinquish that because it's very profitable for them um so there you go just something to um to follow this could mean if this actually goes into law this could drastically affect the way apple runs their business and it might mean that they have to open up the iphone to alternate stores side loading all sorts of stuff yes louis there's been all kinds of changes i mean just this week uh apple's like reader apps like netflix and spotify uh add links to their own websites for third-party payments so all these kinds of changes that uh you know the scrutiny i mean it's not just the eu it's also here all these governments are looking at apple's business and and just kind of trying to figure out ways to make them open things up i'd be interesting if imessage works with everything i mean like the whole idea of it of imessage needing to work with whatsapp or something i don't quite understand how that would even actually work but i don't either and i don't think the people who are crafting legislation do either doesn't really sound right it sounds like a lot of engineering work would have to go into that whole process because it i mean their ecosystem is totally closed and and they they they have like the blue bubbles and the green bubbles and like what bubbles they have for for what's that purple bubbles i mean like there's just a lot of things that have to be thought through like like the user experience all the different features so we'll see if this ends up coming to fruition because i imagine that tc's got his um his lobbyists in tow greasing some palms in the eu to make sure that this never sees the light of day but um something to follow for sure it's definitely an interesting story youi'll just do this one quick because i didn't want to have a huge conversation about this but this is definitely an
