Upcycled Dorm Room Ideas _ Desk Organizer

Welcome to HGTV Handmade with Meg! I'm so excited to share with you my latest project that's perfect for the back to school season, and it's not just for kids - this organizer is great for anyone who wants to keep their desk organized.

As a grown-up, I don't get to experience the thrill of getting a new Trapper Keeper or lava lamp for my dorm room. But, I do want to help others create their own unique and functional organizers that will make their desks feel more like a sanctuary. Inspired by mod design using upcycled materials, we're going to get creative and have some fun!

To start, you'll need the following materials: thick rolls of cardboard, minor from rolls of fabric, a saw, scissors, contact paper, and something for the base (I used a cork triet). Measure your cardboard and mark where you want your cuts to be made. You can use hardcore utility scissors or take that puppy outside side and use a Handa ra - whichever works best for you! I cut mine into pieces that measure 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 inches long. To smooth out the edges, you can use sandpaper or cut off the rough ends with scissors.

Now that we have our cardboard pieces, it's time to cut out pieces of contact paper to wrap our rolls in. Leave an extra inch or inch and a half at either end, as this will give us room to fold down and press in later. Wrap the cardboard roll pushing out any air bubbles with your fingers, take the excess on the end, and make slits into it with your scissors. Fold down each piece and press down inside the tube to fully adhere - do this to all of your rolls.

Now, about that base... you can either leave it as is or paint it! I went for gold with pink sides just for funsies, but you can use any color you want and let it dry for a couple of hours before affixing your pieces to the base. To start, locate the exact center of the base and place the roll down. Trace the perimeter with a pen - don't worry that it'll be covered up later! Remove the roll, add glue to the pen line, and press down until all of your rolls are added.

I went with the tall one in the middle and wrapped them around it in descending order to replicate my favorite mod desk organizers. Voila! You've just made your own unique mod desk organizer using upcycled materials. I love how these turned out - now I don't have just stuff everywhere on my desk; everything has its own particular place.

I'm so excited to share this project with you, and I hope it inspires you to create your own custom organizers for your workspace. Whether you're heading back to school or just want to upgrade your grown-up space, this organizer is perfect for keeping things organized and stylish. Stay tuned next week, when we'll be sharing more cool DIYs from all of the handmade ladies - and at the end of August, get ready for some very cool back to school projects! Thanks for watching, and don't forget to leave a comment below with your favorite design - I want to hear from you!
