primary google account email address which well everybody knows that what is this i do not like this at all and yeah like this don't do what i'm doing i'm not even looking at the details and i'm just agreeing because i want to move on you know this something about this doesn't feel right you know that setup process took 26 minutes start to finish and we didn't exactly lollygag that's just how long it took which is significantly longer than i've experienced with google tv on say a sony television uh and here we are and i'd like to say that i'm already logged into all these apps as i have done many times on many other google tv devices but that's just not the case now some information will be available it's a little bit expedited but it's not a done deal you still have to plug in a bunch of basic information for a lot of these apps so that's going to extend the setup process a little bit and ultimately you're probably looking at a good 40 minutes to get your tv up and running fortunately once it is up and running you really don't have to do anything but just enjoy the tv now once the google tv setup is done you might want to go in and make some adjustments to the picture settings i don't recommend you just use the out-of-box picture setting which is probably going to be in like a a standard mode let's have a look at that real quick actually no i was wrong it's in a low power mode even worse so you want to go in here and make some adjustments to the the picture settings at the very least get out of that low power mode go into standard or movie or something like that i usually pick movie but if you really want to know how to get the best picture settings for not just the display screen but your apps and all your hdmi inputs be sure to check out our full tcl5 series picture settings video
first impressions and i got to go back to how long it took to get this tv set up i think it clocked in at like 26 minutes or so which is a long time longer than i've experienced with google tv on a sony for instance but i bring that up again because as i've used this tv i've noticed that it tends to be a little on the sluggage side it reminds me of when android tv first came out on hisense many tvs and it was a little bit sluggish i'm experiencing that here too i can forgive tcl to an extent because this is their first go at a google tv but it's definitely going to need to improve in the future
the other thing i want to mention is that i felt a little bit creeped out by the amount of signing in and data privacy issues uh that were presented to me in the setup process and i don't know why it's different with this particular tv it just seemed like extra more not a huge fan of that either but user interaction stuff aside how's the picture quality looking well it's about what i expected which is actually a pretty good thing the tcl5 series is not meant to punch as hard as the tcl6 series but that's where things get a little bit complicated because it costs more than it used to so i'm going to have to try and temper my expectations as i test this tv but i do have to say that any refinements that have been made with this particular version of the tcl5 series are probably going to be rather minute i don't think they're going to be a landmark improvement over the roku version of this tv i think it's going to get sufficiently bright i think it's going to have decent backlight control if not the best backlight control i really want to check where the color's at is the saturation where it needs to be
i will say though that on the whole the tcl5 series is in no danger of being discredited as a high-value television it's still got what it takes to make people happy and even though the price is a bit more elevated than it used to be i still think it's going to make people very happy for the amount that they're gonna have to shell out to get this tv to be sure though these kind of scrutinous details are what we get into the full review for so be sure to come back for the full review of the tcl5 series google tv
thanks as always for watching everyone what do you think about the tcl5 series google tv so far leave me a comment about that down below so we can talk about it don't forget to like and subscribe
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe tcl5 series roku tv was already a pretty great tv now there's a google tv version but is it more than just updated smarts is it possible this is actually a better tv welcome back everyone i'm caleb denison and today we're going to unbox setup and get first impressions of the tcl 5 series google tv that would be the r546 as opposed to the r545 roku version that we've already reviewed now when these tvs were first announced the headlines were all about how there was now a google tv version of tcl's already popular tv models but in a conversation that i had with tcl at the time they told me that in an effort to constantly innovate and blah blah blah blah marketing speak i forget the rest there had been some refinements that had been made to this particular model of tv which to me sounds a lot like could be improvements we don't know we need to find out but before we can get to any of that we need to dig into this thing so let's get to it before i get into it i want to mention that the 55-inch version of this tv goes for about 550 bucks on sale that's right now and will probably change the 65-inch version goes for 800 bucks again right now that'll probably change and those may sound a little bit like six series prices from a year or two ago and that's true those prices have gone up and i blame the pandemic and supply chain issues because they are indeed responsible which by the way leads me to this pro tip if you're thinking about buying a tv for the holiday season in 2021 buy it now do not wait i'm not saying this to try and make some money i'm saying it because these things are gonna disappear and i don't want you to be disappointed mark my words come the holidays these things will be gone with that said hop down in the comments with me right now and tell me how many zones do you need in a tv do you count zones do you care about halo and blooming i really want to know what the average person feels about that and while you're down there please consider clicking like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video and you'd like to see more helps out a great deal thanks for your attention business done now let's dig into this tv all right time to install the feet we've got two positions here one on the inside if you have a smaller or narrower media stand and then one on the outside if you have a wider one like we do i like the stability of the wide so we're gonna go with that um these feet feel really cheap they're very plasticky there's also no like security pegs so like the screw is what's gonna hold it in of course the uh last time i installed a foot with a peg i broke it off so maybe that's not such a bad thing anyway two screws in each foot and we're going to set this thing up and here we are back at the tv shot and there is literally nothing to see here it is the most basic back of the tv which is fine you never look at that you know the only reason we're back here is actually to talk about those hdmi ports of which there are three they do support some hdmi 2.1 features but with only three and one of them being the e-arc port consider the limitations that may place on you the other thing i want to talk about is the little switch for the microphone next to the power switch down here in the corner this is to turn on or off the microphone for google assistant so if you want the tv to do your bidding without having to pick up the remote leave it on if you're creeped out by that idea just turn it off and use the remote instead speaking of that remote let's have a look at it really quick so here's the remote and it is what it is it looks a little bit like a chromecast with google tv remote but with the addition of some extra buttons specific to the tv i was a little worried about these because it's kind of like one button split in two on each side uh but it works just fine you've got your mute and volume control on the far right hand side your google assistant button right there and really this is where you're going to spend most of your time here and the home button hey i want to take a quick pause to thank our sponsor for this video trifo the trifo lucy is the first ai powered robot vacuum that uses a 1080p hdr color camera and a depth camera to build a legit 3d map of your home that means it knows where it is in your house as it's mapping your rooms now if you've owned a shall we say less intelligent robot vac like i have then you know that not only does it often seem to just wander around aimlessly but it also tends to get stuck on little things or worse run headlong into certain bio messes left behind by pets the lucy robot vac avoids such conundrums because it can detect objects as short as one inch and cleverly avoid them there is also a pet edition of the lucy vac that comes with 33 more suction power and a pet hair extractor attachment which trifo promises will not get tangled or clogged i tested it and i can confirm this claim now in addition to being a robot vacuum lucy is also something of a security sentinel as it can detect noises or motion in your home while it's cleaning if it does it will send you a notification and you can check out what's going on for yourself it offers crystal clear day and night vision and it can even be used as a pet camera so you can see talk to and record your furry friends when you bounce for a trip to puerto vallarta and leave them behind lucy can be controlled by amazon's you know who and the google assistant it gets smarter over time and it offers a highly interactive app that actually makes a lot of sense check out the trifo lucy vac you'll find a link in the description below thanks to trifo for sponsoring this part of our video now back to the tcl5 series in front of the tv shot you know what considering this tv's class it's a pretty classy looking tv almost no bezels on the side and top which i feel like i say about just about every tv these days because it's true a little bit of a metal strip down at the bottom which is super dark so it doesn't call attention to itself there's also a significant amount of anti-glare for a tv again in this class i'm surprised by that but perhaps the most notable little touch is actually the very center of the tv at the bottom it's got that sort of google home speaker cloth to it which is just a little thing but for whatever reason kind of feel like it's a nice touch all right now let's turn this thing on all right so we power the tv on i notice we get a new tcl animation and then we see the google tv animation here comes a part that i keep forgetting to mention to folks you do not have to set this up as a google tv you can set it up as a basic tv there's an option for that okay so don't feel like you have to get into the whole google ecosystem but if you choose to do so and i would recommend you do because it's actually one of the better parts of this tv make sure that you have the google home app and make sure you have a google account set up because setting this tv up with your phone is by far the best way to go way less button pressing way less frustrating still takes about the same amount of time it's just less work on your part the most important thing i have to say about the whole google tv setup thing is that you'll want to be careful about the terms and conditions that you agree to google probably owns half your life already this is just another portal for giving it more information yes you will get better content suggestions but you know there's privacy concerns here so if you're not comfortable with it then don't allow it to take that information just understand that it's going to be a less customized tv for you okay i do want to pop in to say something very specific about this i am not aware of a tcl account situation like i've never had to deal with that before i apparently have to deal with it here now there is no option to skip it there is a countdown timer in the lower left-hand corner that started at 830 seconds i'm not great at math but that sounds like a really long time to wait for something to just time out ultimately i'm thinking about just signing in with my google account which creates a tcl account i'm not excited about that what even is this i'm going to reach out to tcl and try and provide an update in the full review but i'm not digging this i'll tell you that right now so tcl user center would like to associate me with my personal info on google creepy see create and delete its own configuration data in your google drive what see your personal info including any personal info you've made publicly available didn't you already say that see your primary google account email address which well everybody knows that what is this i do not like this at all and yeah like this don't do what i'm doing i'm not even looking at the details and i'm just agreeing because i want to move on you know this something about this doesn't feel right you know that setup process took 26 minutes start to finish and we didn't exactly lollygag that's just how long it took which is significantly longer than i've experienced with google tv on say a sony television uh and here we are and i'd like to say that i'm already logged into all these apps as i have done many times on many other google tv devices but that's just not the case now some information will be available it's a little bit expedited but it's not a done deal you still have to plug in a bunch of basic information for a lot of these apps so that's going to extend the setup process a little bit and ultimately you're probably looking at a good 40 minutes to get your tv up and running fortunately once it is up and running you really don't have to do anything but just enjoy the tv now once the google tv setup is done you might want to go in and make some adjustments to the picture settings i don't recommend you just use the out-of-box picture setting which is probably going to be in like a a standard mode let's have a look at that real quick actually no i was wrong it's in a low power mode even worse so you want to go in here and make some adjustments to the the good thing the tcl5 series is not meant to punch as hard as the tcl6 series but that's where things get a little bit complicated because it costs more than it used to so i'm going to have to try and temper my expectations as i test this tv but i do have to say that any refinements that have been made with this particular version of the tcl5 series are probably going to be rather minute i don't
