How-To Make Dark Chocolate Hanukkah Gelt with Eliot Glazer - Hanukkah Spectacular
The Art of Making Chocolate Hanukkah Gelt with Eliot Glazer
Eliot Glazer, a comedian and self-proclaimed "bad Jew," took to the stage at Munchies Comic Cons spectacular to share his take on making traditional Hanukkah gelt. With a mischievous grin, he began by saying, "I'm not very religious, but I definitely like one of these people who says I'm a cultural Jew. I identify culturally which basically just means like I'm Jewish for the food." This statement sets the tone for his approach to Hanukkah, focusing on the culinary aspects rather than the religious traditions.
To make his chocolate gelt, Eliot started by purchasing candy-making chocolate and using a double boiler. "What I did was I bought chocolate for candy making," he explained. "They used a double boiler and I melted them and then what I have is obviously the melted chocolate." With the chocolate now in a workable state, Eliot moved on to preparing the mini muffin tin. He had gold edible dust that he could use to paint on the gelt, adding a touch of luxury to his creations.
As Eliot began to assemble the gelt, he shared stories about his childhood and family traditions. His bar mitzvah theme was initially going to be "Jews," but he quickly realized it wasn't a good idea. Instead, he settled for a Long Island Jews theme, which suited him better. He also spoke about how his body hurts after experiencing one thing for one night only, joking that if he could experience eight nights of that, he'd know what to do. However, Eliot's mind soon shifted to the more practical aspects of Hanukkah.
In a surprising twist, Eliot mentioned that he had attended a Billy Joel concert with his family at Madison Square Garden. Before the show started, someone approached them and asked if they were a family of four. This led to Eliot being seated in special seats reserved for families of four, which was a delightful surprise. With this anecdote, Eliot then turned his attention back to making Hanukkah gelt.
Eliot continued to work on his creations, tapping the chocolate gelt out onto a peg machine as it hardened. He also spoke about how he loves painting gelt gold, stating that it reminds him of the importance of money in Jewish culture. As he finished his gelt, Eliot decided to stack them on a plate and share one last piece of advice: "Don't eat too much or you'll get diarrhea."
In the final moments of his presentation, Eliot took a moment to say the Hanukkah prayer as he lit the menorah. However, his words were interrupted by an unexpected pause, where he seemed to be unsure of what to do next. The audience remained quiet, waiting for him to continue.
Overall, Eliot Glazer's take on making chocolate Hanukkah gelt was a humorous and lighthearted presentation that focused on the fun aspects of Jewish tradition. Despite his mischievous grin and occasional jokes, he managed to convey a sense of respect and appreciation for the cultural practices surrounding Hanukkah.
