iPhone 6s & 6s Plus Review - Is It Worth Upgrading

The Galaxy Note 5 and iPhone 6S are two devices that are being compared in this review. The reviewer is using both phones to determine which one is better suited for their needs.

One of the main differences between the two phones is the camera system. The Galaxy Note 5 has a 12 megapixel sensor, while the iPhone 6S has an 8 megapixel sensor. While this does provide a boost in detail, the reviewer notes that they can barely tell the difference between the two cameras unless they pixel peep and zoom in closely. This means that the camera is not a huge reason to upgrade from the iPhone 6 to the 6S.

However, the Galaxy Note 5 does have one advantage over the iPhone 6S - low-light performance. The reviewer notes that the Galaxy Note 5 can take great shots in low light conditions, making it a better option for those who need to capture images in dimly lit environments. This is because the phone's sensor and camera system are more sensitive to light, allowing for better image quality.

In addition to the camera, the iPhone 6S also has one feature that the Galaxy Note 5 does not - 4K video recording. The reviewer notes that this is a nice addition, especially for those who want to record high-quality video. However, they also note that the iPhone's camera interface can be a bit simplistic and lacks manual controls.

The reviewer also mentions that the iPhone 6S has a feature called "live photos" which captures 3 seconds of video before and after the photo is taken. They admit that they haven't been using this feature much, as it often captures things they didn't want to capture.

One thing that sets the Galaxy Note 5 apart from the iPhone 6S is its water resistance. The reviewer notes that this may be a consideration for some users, but they also caution against taking the phone too close to water in case of an accident.

Another difference between the two phones is the presence of 3D touch. However, the reviewer notes that this feature is not being utilized much in this generation of iPhones, and it's likely to become more prominent later on.

In terms of performance, the iPhone 6S has a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner which can sometimes be a downfall for some users. The reviewer also mentions that battery life remains the same as the iPhone 5s, and there is only a small improvement in camera quality.

Overall, the reviewer notes that this is a marginal upgrade from the iPhone 6 to the 6S. While there are some improvements, such as better low-light performance and 4K video recording, these may not be enough to justify an upgrade for everyone. The reviewer also mentions that they would personally wait for the iPhone 7 before upgrading.

The reviewer concludes by saying that while both phones have their strengths and weaknesses, it's ultimately up to individual users to decide which one is right for them. They also note that they've found Google apps on the iPhone 6S to be very convenient, and are now comfortable using an iPhone as a daily driver.

In terms of recommendations, the reviewer invites readers to share their thoughts on whether or not these phones are must-haves or something to brush over. They also encourage readers to rate and comment on the video, and to subscribe to their channel for more content like this.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everybody this is Erica the technology nerd likes to film stuff and it is time to review the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s plus so I've been using these phones as my daily drivers I am typically an Android person I've got a lot of Android phones it's not because I absolutely prefer Android but I do rely a lot on Google services I make youtube videos I really do need all those Google services so now that I pick these guys up I see that there are a lot of Google applications on here now where I don't feel like I am now tethered to using an Android phone so that's something that's really cool hopefully I can help you decide if you would like to update from the iPhone 6 to the 6s I also want to talk about some specialized topics such as the displays the cameras performance so on and so forth you can see if these are worthy of a place in your pocket so let's go ahead and check them out ok so first thing is first the first thing that I want to talk about is the size of these phones or the difference really we don't have any differences to speak of at least visually just looking at these phones side-by-side here we have both 6 pluses here this is the 6s plus and these 6 plus they look identical to me the only telltale difference that we have here is this says s here where there is no s here and this is a bit heavier the same thing goes for the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6 so these are a bit more weighty for the iPhone 6s I've been happier that this is more weighty because I felt that the iPhone 6 was just too light feeling I know how can I complain about a phone being too light but with a phone this small it just feels more substantial now so no complaints there but this now does feel like quite a hefty phone although honestly I'm not too bothered by it as I'm quite used to carrying around very heavy phones very big phones around spec wise and if you look really hard or if your end up using a caliper to measure you can see that this one is just a little bit wider a little bit thicker a little bit taller and the same thing goes for the 6s the question of course would be can I still use all of my cases well that's going to depend I've seen that a lot of the slip-on type cases that I have worked just fine if you have a really form-fitting case then you might end up running to some problems but just about every case that I have right here the pop-on type cases they all fit just fine you can see I even have the old red iPhone six-plus case and this fits just fine as well I really can't tell that this was not made for this because all the cutouts and everything are in the same place so you're probably going to have a lot of good luck here with this but it's probably going to be a case by case basis a hat pun pun intended but overall I am not too worried now I'm going to be very happy when we come across the iPhone 7 next year because I'm getting tired of this design I don't really like this screen to body ratio as you can see the screen is huge it's a 5.5 inch display but these bezels just add so much more bulk onto this phone I can argue yes I can easily use this to play certain car type racing games and landscape and I don't have to worry about touching the screen that works really well but when you have devices like the LG g4 with the same size display 5.5 inches you can see just how well ELLs you did with the footprint of this phone so I'm hoping to see that Apple will come out hopefully with a smaller phone something that's more ergonomic something that's not as hefty I give it to them though this does feel premium so you can see the difference in size there with a 5.5 inch display the LG g4 you can go ahead and grab something like the galaxy note 5 this is a 5.7 inch display and still we've got a better body to screen ratio we've got very little bezel here on the side and we've got some bezel here at the top and the bottom but you really can see the difference still then here you have the galaxy s6 with a 5.1 inch display so the only option you have right now if you don't want this big of a phone is to go for the smaller one but then in the display section I'm going to talk about just how we don't have as high of pixel density on the smaller one then on the larger one this is barely breaking 720p where this is a full 1080p so I do feel still a little short-sighted I know this is the S series so essentially this is the better version of the that they have released all right pocket test so I've done one of these in a while but I figure I would do one anyway we've already compared the sizes of the flagships that have come out as of late and they're all quite big and I've just been concerned about the iPhone because of that screen to body ratio really big bezels on this guy whereas some of the other flagships have a really big screen or a bigger display and have a better screen to body ratio where I don't feel so awkward having something like this in my pocket the bigger the screen the less I feel like I'm compensating does that make any sense so I have a small person okay so here's my 5 foot tall body we're going to shove this in my pocket this is the 6s plus where's the little one now for your ladies out there if you're watching it's going to make more sense for you to have the smaller one in your pocket least you can you can kind of hide it with your shirt like this but with this you just end up with quite a large bulge it's just kind of a no-no I don't know who has a big idea to make such dysfunctional pockets for ladies but this is how I get so now let's go ahead and grab something else like the galaxy note 5 that's what this looks like and pocket very large phone still now this is a gender-neutral thing but I feel at least at the very least if you have this in your back pocket and you sit on it this has got 7000 series aluminum and I've seen people try to bend these things I really don't think that it's going to bend or break so if you happen to sit on it I think you'll be alright just it's not that's just that's just not going to feel very comfortable it's like sitting on a surfboard so here we have the Moto X pure which is also quite a large phone here we have the galaxy s6 which I think makes some good sense I also like how it just kind of blends in with the colour of my jeans here so just in every aspect this is a very large phone if you're worried about size this probably makes more sense as it's actually even smaller than the galaxy s6 but I like large displays so this this is what I get to deal with and you know what don't judge me I think I can work it pretty well another change that we have here is that this is now 7000 series aluminum so we don't have any more bending issues I'm not going to try to bend this but I have seen people around the interwebs trying to bend this doing all kinds of crazy in-depth testing and seeing that now we've got a very substantial strong alloy here now a lot of people had no trouble whatsoever with their iPhone 6 plus or iPhone 6 bending but then I come across my friend who was like oh yeah my phone's had ever bent and he took his bowman out of his pocket and he had a case very similar to this one and he had one of apple's cases on and he took it out was like yeah oh actually it is bent oh boy so just with being against his leg moving around the heat heating up the aluminum and walking around and ended up bending it just a little bit so now with just regular strength or even sitting on this I'm doubt this thing is going to bend so thank you Apple for fixing that although they never openly admitted it another great thing that is not visible on this phone is that it seems to be quite water resistant now of course I do not recommend anyone going and putting this in a pool and letting it go down to the bottom no no no this is just talking about splashing it or accidentally maybe dropping it into the sink for just a second what Apple has done is coated the logic board around the connectors so that water isn't easily able to get in now I did see a video where a guy dropped his phone into the pool down to three feet four feet and the phone still did fry so water pressure is not going to be this phone's friend but I do have confidence that we can drop it in a little bit of water and it should survive whereas with every single other iPhone before it I've seen that they all short-circuited and that happened very very quickly so that is kudos here Apple also talks about their ion ex glass a lot of people might wonder how is that different from Gorilla Glass it looks like the process is very similar it's that similar ion exchange process where you put it in a bath of potassium and the sodium ions are moved out of the glass and the potassium ions are moved into the glass so they take place of those sodium ions and they pack really tightly together so it strengthens the glass chemically unfortunately though this still does scratch maybe it's less easier to deep a scratch or break for the first thing I noticed after rubbing it against my pants a few times just after taking this out of the store I had it maybe for an hour or two I saw these little micro abrasions all over it that is when looking in direct sunlight and really trying to glimpse at it but don't think that this is impervious to scratches it's just not true you've essentially got a glass it's similar to drill a glass but it's hard to speak of the similar strengths and things so a very quick recap in this section help you decide if this is worth upgrading to we've got stronger aluminum they say that they've got the strongest glass that they've had so far and also this thing is quite water resistant otherwise you've got the same design the same size display and the same pour screen to body ratio so now specs everybody loves specs so I would say that this is a bit of an upgrade we can indeed call what we have in here an upgrade from what we have from last year we have the Apple a9 chip instead of the a8 so we've got a faster CPU faster GPU this is still a dual-core CPU 1.8 4 gigahertz and the GPU is the power VR GT 7600 now just like we had last year I notice in benchmarking that this one performs just a little bit better we can attribute that to having more pixels on this display and also if they are rendering the image at a higher resolution and then down scaling that's going to affect the scores as well but it's not where I notice a huge difference I would really rate these about the same in terms of smoothness and just going about the interface they look the same to me I really have not been able to tell any difference so I would just say choose your poison whichever one suits the size that you need now taking a bit of a look of performance differences from this year's model to last year's model I do see it just a tiny teeny bit of a difference in terms of a speed or smoothness increase call us placebo maybe but I perceived that this one is just ever so slightly smoother I've seen that rotating them is about the same speed opening applications is just a little bit quicker you can try YouTube so second and a half two seconds behind this one doesn't do load faster opening up the Safari browser see this is just tiny bit faster one thing that does really stick out here though is that this now has two gigabytes of RAM versus the one gigabyte of RAM that is on the older model where this really sticks out I find is when using the Safari browser tabs do not refresh as often as they do on here that's something that always drove me nuts so here we have several web browser tabs that are open let's go ahead and touch here first you can see that YouTube is reloading this is not reloading we have Vimeo that one might have stayed open we have New York Times New York time has this has to reload we have TED Talks this has to reload something like Game Stop so all of them are reloading here on the last year's model so it's enough to prove my point that all these are staying open just fine where we're struggling here to really hit home here we can look at some benchmarks you can see that we've got a nice increase in the single core score is same thing in the multi-core scores as well so definitely faster GPU you can also look at the GPU performance as well this is GFX benchmark so you can see with Manhattan on screen we're now getting thirty eight point four frames per second versus the 20 point three before here's the off screen we have thirty nine point seven versus twenty point three then on t-rex got fifty six point six frames per second and forty two point six frames per second and then eighty versus forty six point one so this really is a nice increase again I'd really don't think that I'd be going out and buying this absolutely if I had the last year's model but if you want the latest and greatest and if you want it a little bit faster at opening applications or you like to have that extra gigabyte of RAM this might be the way to go so recapping from the performance section we do have applications that are opening faster things feel just a tad bit more fluid maybe we've got a faster CPU faster GPU more RAM and between the - the difference is very very minimal - where I really don't see it as much of a difference at all furthering talking about specs here we have an 8 megapixel camera and then we have a 12 megapixel camera here this has now jumped up to 5 megapixels on the front and then we've got the 1.2 megapixel front facing camera from last year that's really really paltry now that we have a 12 megapixel sensor we have 4k video so I'll be talking more about this in the camera section so now I want to talk about the battery life's a little bit and what we're seeing is that the batteries are actually smaller than what we had last year that's a bit unfortunate a lot of people are very upset about this now this was presumably done to make room for the 3d touch sensor this inside of here the batteries are not significantly smaller but with the iPhone 6 plus we had two thousand nine hundred and fifteen million hours it's almost three thousand million our battery inside of this and it's been pushed down to two thousand seven hundred and fifty then for the 6s we had an 1810 million power battery 1810 and now it's down at 1715 million hours now due to the efficiency of the new processor inside of this Apple is saying that the battery life is exactly the same so I would have hoped we would have seen an increase in battery life but I see that the battery life is fine the better life that's really pretty good on the 6s plus just like we saw with the 6 plus and I'm getting myself a full day of battery life on the 6s so full day a battery life on here unless I'm really running it hard then I can get through about half a day but this lasts me more than a day of battery life I really haven't had any trouble with this whatsoever so even though we have smaller batteries it's really not so bad it's just not an improvement either now Apple did decide to include a low-power mode it's supposed to get you a couple more hours of battery life at least if you're running really low so what it does when you turn it on and says low power mode temporarily reduces power consumption until you can fully charge your iPhone when this is on mail fetch hey Siri background app refresh automatic downloads and some visual effects are reduced or turned off so this is I'm sure by popular demand finally Apple has included this so that is a nice inclusion so don't freak out too much the battery life still is good on either one of these just to keep in mind if you're doing a lot of stuff with your phone throughout the day that this is going to last you part the day but this will last you a full day or more I think my biggest disappointment is that we do not have inductive charging and also we don't have fast charging as well I'm assuming that maybe next year with the iPhone 7 we'll start seeing some fast charging or inductive charging so this is one of those plug and chug things and it takes you a few hours to charge them up but at least the battery lives are not atrocious one thing that I really love about my Galaxy s6 or even my Galaxy Note 5 is being able to plug it in and within a half hour charging it up to 50 percent that's just bold in I know the battery life isn't phenomenal on this but since I have access to a wall charger pretty much all day long it's really really really nice to have so get with the program Apple no last bit I want to talk about for performance is this touch ID button and just how insanely fast this is now this might be a hindrance or this might be a good thing it just depends so Apple has made this so stinkin fast now that you can't even take a look at your notifications on your lockscreen I know a lot of people are pointing this out this is something that just completely floored me all you have to do is touch it it's unlocked already it is so fast that it's such an integrated part of the system that you can't even tell if there is a lock on this anymore here look I can just use another finger and it tells me try again so that's really ingenious to get fingerprint recognition to be that seamless is really really wonderful the only thing though now is that if you want to check your lockscreen notifications you have to touch this button up here otherwise it's just too fast that's insane see check that again barely did I even touch that I don't know how they did it but you can see on the older one you can touch it you can take your time leisurely looking at notifications on the lock screen and you can touch again there it goes or you'd have to just hold it down for a bit longer so that's a couple of seconds that wasn't slow I thought that that was actually pretty good but this is something entirely of its own class now here I have my Galaxy s6 and you can see I have to hold it down so these kind of remind me of each other but this is insanity and I'm not really sure how I feel about it you guys can let me know in the comment section below okay so let's move on to talking about the displays and also the calibration of these displays so the first thing that I want to mention is my sadness of how Apple has not boosted the resolution of the smaller version of the phone according to specs it is 1334 by 750 326 pixels per inch that's the same as last year in this day and age with displays that are hitting 4k which is ridiculous and 2k which is bad I thought it was ridiculous but actually looks nice it's just inexcusable to have a display that's barely breaking 720p it is a little over 720p but not outstandingly so we're used to having 400 pixels per inch or more so this display Apple is very much showing its age when looking at icons when looking at text you can just see that it's just not as sharp or as pleasurable to view as other displays out on the market and for how much this cost it's really not okay so I think that maybe iPhone 7 will have a higher resolution display think about it higher resolution display at 4.7 inches it will be nice and crisp it'll look great even if this was a 1080p display the pixel density would be pretty nice so I really don't know what that is all about here so if you are a display junkie you will need to go with the plus model of the phone at least this is 1080 by 1920 over 400 pixels per inch so that's pretty standard for the rest of the market and it does look good now when looking at the calibration of both of these devices this looks the same as we had last year Apple is still claiming full srgb standard they are most likely talking about the full srgb calibration standard now that's important because all the content that we watch whether it's content on YouTube or if it's even app content or if it's internet content all of that is encoded for srgb and to get that srgb content to look correct it's good to view it on a display that's calibrated for srgb so apple claims full srgb standard but the thing that sticks out to me is that this is a little bit to cool the White's that we see here the white point is a little bit too cool to be the full srgb calibration standard so of course they did some measurements and I can see that they're close to the srgb calibration standard but they are not the full srgb standard the whites should be d65 or 6500 Kelvin so they're just a little bit too blue but not horribly blue so we have seven thousand three hundred Kelvin this is seven thousand five hundred Kelvin I've seen that between the models and also just between different phones that the white point kind of varies some people say they've got a warmer white point some are a little bit like this or cooler but standard I've seen between a lot of models the more cooler looking displays so I feel that seven thousand three hundred Kelvin seven thousand five hundred is right at the brink to where it starts to look to blue if you go cooler than that I think that the colors just don't look right anymore because when you have a bluish white point the cooler color temperature it's also going to give a bluish color cast to all the colors so it still looks good it's a little bit bluish for my taste but not bad at all and in terms of the color space that we have this is meeting the full sRGB color space and the saturations look good so things don't look oversaturated it's not like an AMOLED panel like we have with Samsung so Apple is very careful about that also for the gamma which is really important not gamut but gamma they are targeting gamma to point to Apple is one of those only company that I see actually cares about getting that gamma right because if you have gamma that's too high if you boost that gamma too high it's going to not only dim the image but it's going to saturate the image as well and if the gammas too low it starts to make the image look washed out so kudos their apple their grayscale calibration is pretty good except for having a bit too much blue so Apple really didn't feel like they had to do anything to improve what they have here at least they were not lying about the brightness of these displays both of these hit over 500 nits so those get nice and bright they also talk about their contrast ratios and I see that they are truthful for that so the blacks are pretty decent they're not AMOLED black but it's not bad at all so overall I do like these displays if you care about watching content and aren't just using this for social media here in and you want to take pictures and want to be able to see details go for the larger model that's really going to be the only choice you get unfortunately maybe next year Apple just maybe next year all I can think about is that Shia LaBeouf meme do it I mean it's not going to take much seriously just boost the resolution on this thing I'd be muy muy happy so as we are closing this section talking about the display what about 3d touch is that something that's actually useful or is it really not is it more of a gimmick well my thought right now is that this 3d touch thing is in its infancy but I do feel that overall it's going to be a paradigm shift for how we interact with our phones right now you can just use some simple basic things like hold down and you can access various little menu options so this is kind of a right-click feature you can see if you hold down on the camera application you can say take selfie record video you don't have to go fully into the application everyone has seen underneath photos where you can do the peak holding down like this and then pop into the photo itself and then we can take a peek at our live photos pull upward we can share favorite this is actually where I think Apple represents this the best so if you go into the photo itself you can see that kind of Harry Potter esque live photo capturing a moment John and I being cheesy taking a selfie on our wedding day so it's really fun to be able to capture those moments or if you put pressure on the edge of the display you can get to your multitasking but the best place I see this implemented so far is holding down on the keyboard you can see you are enabled with this little cursor here it's kind of like a mouse so you can go and pick in between particular characters that's not so easy to do with your finger I can see this working in various game applications so I would not say that this isn't useful but that developers really haven't been able to fully utilize this yet I think that other OEMs are going to be coming out with something similar we see Samsung having a patent out there somewhere with this type of force touch as well so don't expect this to go away if you want to get more future proof with your iPhone maybe it would be a good idea to upgrade just take a chance on the 3d touch I'm really curious to see what we're going to be doing with this in the very near future so just like anything else you have to learn how to use it you have to remember how to use it so I have not been using it all that much because a it's new and B I really have to figure out in which way I would apply using this but like I showed you with a keyboard that's actually pretty useful so I'm expecting to see some pretty cool things with this 3d touch and then eventually in the future we probably will wonder how we are surviving without it right now but you all can let me know what you actually think about that or how you feel so we're just waiting for some developers to catch on to this and other OEMs to pick it up but I think it really will it's not going anywhere now the very last thing that I want to talk about in this review are the cameras so we've got a 12 megapixel camera up from the 8 megapixel camera that Apple has been using for a very long time and now we have a 5 megapixel camera on here instead of 1.2 so in this section I really want to keep my thoughts concise I'm hoping to just make a shoot out video later between a bunch of different phones what I feel is that overall Apple has boosted the sensor to being 12 megapixels because they wanted to have 4k video to kind of catch up with what the rest of the industry is doing unfortunately this lens is still f 2.2 so we're not seeing F 1.9 F 1.8 I really like those wider aperture lenses helps with low-light also with shallow depth of field makes a really nice effect so I don't really feel that this camera is a big enough boost to go from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 6s unfortunately I'm really relying on the iPhone 7 to be something that's more prolific and improvement so yes we have a little bit of an improvement but it's not anything huge really what I've been seeing in my testing is kind of a mixed bag of tricks generally I have a hard time telling the difference between the photos from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 6s there are a lot of circumstances where the photos look pretty much the same unless you end up really pixel peeping but I do note that sometimes where I can tell a difference is in a little bit of detail so we see more detail now of course from an image pixel sensor to a 12 megapixel sensor sometimes I don't really notice the detail change unless it's really fine like in grass blades or something I also notice that the photos from the 6s tend to be a bit more contrast II than what we had with the iPhone 6 but even though we have an increase in detail unfortunately it doesn't match up with some of the other flagships that we have on the market namely something like the galaxy note 5 with a 16 megapixel sensor that's where I feel it really starts to fall behind also I find it insulting that there is no optical image stabilization on the iPhone 6s just on the plus model really Apple really you couldn't have put a is in both models of the phone at least now we have optical image stabilization working in video it's not just the digital image stabilization that was working that they called cinematic stabilization on the iPhone 6 plus so iPhone 6 plus did not use optical image stabilization at all in video it was just the digital image stabilization cinematic stabilization so I do have some samples of OS working and I do like the results of that I think the Apple does a pretty good job with that not for video yes social shares and moving these the same amount not for video yes I'll show you and moving these the same amount 60 frames per second I'm also happy to see that even with the megapixel boost from 8 to 12 that we do ok in low light actually it does pretty well I've been able to compare it with the galaxy note 5 and I see that this does better than the galaxy note 5 and low lighting that is until you start using the pro mode on the galaxy note 5 if you use a tripod and the pro mode you can really get some good shots great low-light shots with the galaxy note 5 but just as point-and-shoot which is where most people are going to be using this this does better in low light I see then the galaxy note 5 so there really isn't anything too astounding huge here again you have a 12 megapixel sensor up from an 8 megapixel sensor so I see a little bit of boost in detail on some things but in a lot of photos I can barely tell the difference between them at all unless I really start to pixel peep and zoom in and look around so I would not call the camera a huge reason to jump up from the iPhone 6 to the 6s I'm really going to be looking towards the iPhone 7 for that but we do have some improvement and we do now have 4k video which is really nice to have I do like apples camera interface though although I find it to be too simplistic sometimes and there's just not any manual controls but it is very simple you can just slide upward to go between a couple of different modes here I really don't like where they have put the settings for the camera very strangely so you need to go underneath settings photos and camera to be able to control a couple of the settings such as recording video so you need to go underneath here to select 4k at 30 frames per second 1080p at 60 frames per second 1080p 3 so on and so forth that's kind of an inexcusable to have that there it's a little strange even your option for camera grid is under here why remarkable things note though underneath Slovo here is that we do have the ability to shoot in 1080p you in slow motion at 120 frames per second so that's nice because we were stuck at 720p before I guess they keep things by default and if you really want to change some options you need to dig around inside the phone but it's just kind of counterintuitive so there's that grid there so by default you have live photos on and I really haven't been using live photos all that much except for a few times on my wedding day because you end up capturing 3 seconds of things and a lot of the time I'm just capturing things I didn't actually want to capture if we've got HDR auto on/off we've got our flash course now you can change to the front-facing camera here and you can choose flash as well here there is no actual flash but it's just the display itself so you can take a picture you can see the display itself becomes really bright to flash in your face it is nice that we do have auto HDR now for the front-facing camera it's just a very simplistic interface there's not too much to be said about it so this is all that I want to say for now between these phones I think that it is a marginal upgrade we do have some improvements some improvements that might be enough for some people to upgrade to such as if you want a little bit of better water resistance although I would not still recommend taking this around water if your phone Ben into oblivion it might be worth getting one of these guys over the one before we've got that 3d touch although this generation I don't really know that we're going to be doing much with it it's probably going to become more prominent later on we've got a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner which sometimes I think it's actually a downfall got battery life that's the same got a little bit of improvement on the camera and you have the option for 4k video though it's not the greatest this is a phone that I think I'd be happy enough to use as my daily driver and I have been using these as my daily driver I think that what's been making it easier now just as a side note in this wrap-up that we have tons of Google applications now I've got everything on here that I could possibly need I even have Google Play Music I never thought I'd see the day so I feel like I can actually reliably use an iPhone now as a daily driver that's a little bit of a confession on my part because I haven't tried to Android due to the Google services that Android has so let me know what you think about these phones and if you would like to upgrade to these or if you essentially would just wait for the 7 I would personally wait for the 7 I think these are nice but if I had a 6 I really wouldn't go for it so thank you everybody for watching this has been erica the technology nerds likes to film stuff please rate comment and subscribe let me know how you feel about these phones are they a must-have or are they something to brush over let me know and have a good nighthey everybody this is Erica the technology nerd likes to film stuff and it is time to review the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s plus so I've been using these phones as my daily drivers I am typically an Android person I've got a lot of Android phones it's not because I absolutely prefer Android but I do rely a lot on Google services I make youtube videos I really do need all those Google services so now that I pick these guys up I see that there are a lot of Google applications on here now where I don't feel like I am now tethered to using an Android phone so that's something that's really cool hopefully I can help you decide if you would like to update from the iPhone 6 to the 6s I also want to talk about some specialized topics such as the displays the cameras performance so on and so forth you can see if these are worthy of a place in your pocket so let's go ahead and check them out ok so first thing is first the first thing that I want to talk about is the size of these phones or the difference really we don't have any differences to speak of at least visually just looking at these phones side-by-side here we have both 6 pluses here this is the 6s plus and these 6 plus they look identical to me the only telltale difference that we have here is this says s here where there is no s here and this is a bit heavier the same thing goes for the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6 so these are a bit more weighty for the iPhone 6s I've been happier that this is more weighty because I felt that the iPhone 6 was just too light feeling I know how can I complain about a phone being too light but with a phone this small it just feels more substantial now so no complaints there but this now does feel like quite a hefty phone although honestly I'm not too bothered by it as I'm quite used to carrying around very heavy phones very big phones around spec wise and if you look really hard or if your end up using a caliper to measure you can see that this one is just a little bit wider a little bit thicker a little bit taller and the same thing goes for the 6s the question of course would be can I still use all of my cases well that's going to depend I've seen that a lot of the slip-on type cases that I have worked just fine if you have a really form-fitting case then you might end up running to some problems but just about every case that I have right here the pop-on type cases they all fit just fine you can see I even have the old red iPhone six-plus case and this fits just fine as well I really can't tell that this was not made for this because all the cutouts and everything are in the same place so you're probably going to have a lot of good luck here with this but it's probably going to be a case by case basis a hat pun pun intended but overall I am not too worried now I'm going to be very happy when we come across the iPhone 7 next year because I'm getting tired of this design I don't really like this screen to body ratio as you can see the screen is huge it's a 5.5 inch display but these bezels just add so much more bulk onto this phone I can argue yes I can easily use this to play certain car type racing games and landscape and I don't have to worry about touching the screen that works really well but when you have devices like the LG g4 with the same size display 5.5 inches you can see just how well ELLs you did with the footprint of this phone so I'm hoping to see that Apple will come out hopefully with a smaller phone something that's more ergonomic something that's not as hefty I give it to them though this does feel premium so you can see the difference in size there with a 5.5 inch display the LG g4 you can go ahead and grab something like the galaxy note 5 this is a 5.7 inch display and still we've got a better body to screen ratio we've got very little bezel here on the side and we've got some bezel here at the top and the bottom but you really can see the difference still then here you have the galaxy s6 with a 5.1 inch display so the only option you have right now if you don't want this big of a phone is to go for the smaller one but then in the display section I'm going to talk about just how we don't have as high of pixel density on the smaller one then on the larger one this is barely breaking 720p where this is a full 1080p so I do feel still a little short-sighted I know this is the S series so essentially this is the better version of the that they have released all right pocket test so I've done one of these in a while but I figure I would do one anyway we've already compared the sizes of the flagships that have come out as of late and they're all quite big and I've just been concerned about the iPhone because of that screen to body ratio really big bezels on this guy whereas some of the other flagships have a really big screen or a bigger display and have a better screen to body ratio where I don't feel so awkward having something like this in my pocket the bigger the screen the less I feel like I'm compensating does that make any sense so I have a small person okay so here's my 5 foot tall body we're going to shove this in my pocket this is the 6s plus where's the little one now for your ladies out there if you're watching it's going to make more sense for you to have the smaller one in your pocket least you can you can kind of hide it with your shirt like this but with this you just end up with quite a large bulge it's just kind of a no-no I don't know who has a big idea to make such dysfunctional pockets for ladies but this is how I get so now let's go ahead and grab something else like the galaxy note 5 that's what this looks like and pocket very large phone still now this is a gender-neutral thing but I feel at least at the very least if you have this in your back pocket and you sit on it this has got 7000 series aluminum and I've seen people try to bend these things I really don't think that it's going to bend or break so if you happen to sit on it I think you'll be alright just it's not that's just that's just not going to feel very comfortable it's like sitting on a surfboard so here we have the Moto X pure which is also quite a large phone here we have the galaxy s6 which I think makes some good sense I also like how it just kind of blends in with the colour of my jeans here so just in every aspect this is a very large phone if you're worried about size this probably makes more sense as it's actually even smaller than the galaxy s6 but I like large displays so this this is what I get to deal with and you know what don't judge me I think I can work it pretty well another change that we have here is that this is now 7000 series aluminum so we don't have any more bending issues I'm not going to try to bend this but I have seen people around the interwebs trying to bend this doing all kinds of crazy in-depth testing and seeing that now we've got a very substantial strong alloy here now a lot of people had no trouble whatsoever with their iPhone 6 plus or iPhone 6 bending but then I come across my friend who was like oh yeah my phone's had ever bent and he took his bowman out of his pocket and he had a case very similar to this one and he had one of apple's cases on and he took it out was like yeah oh actually it is bent oh boy so just with being against his leg moving around the heat heating up the aluminum and walking around and ended up bending it just a little bit so now with just regular strength or even sitting on this I'm doubt this thing is going to bend so thank you Apple for fixing that although they never openly admitted it another great thing that is not visible on this phone is that it seems to be quite water resistant now of course I do not recommend anyone going and putting this in a pool and letting it go down to the bottom no no no this is just talking about splashing it or accidentally maybe dropping it into the sink for just a second what Apple has done is coated the logic board around the connectors so that water isn't easily able to get in now I did see a video where a guy dropped his phone into the pool down to three feet four feet and the phone still did fry so water pressure is not going to be this phone's friend but I do have confidence that we can drop it in a little bit of water and it should survive whereas with every single other iPhone before it I've seen that they all short-circuited and that happened very very quickly so that is kudos here Apple also talks about their ion ex glass a lot of people might wonder how is that different from Gorilla Glass it looks like the process is very similar it's that similar ion exchange process where you put it in a bath of potassium and the sodium ions are moved out of the glass and the potassium ions are moved into the glass so they take place of those sodium ions and they pack really tightly together so it strengthens the glass chemically unfortunately though this still does scratch maybe it's less easier to deep a scratch or break for the first thing I noticed after rubbing it against my pants a few times just after taking this out of the store I had it maybe for an hour or two I saw these little micro abrasions all over it that is when looking in direct sunlight and really trying to glimpse at it but don't think that this is impervious to scratches it's just not true you've essentially got a glass it's similar to drill a glass but it's hard to speak of the similar strengths and things so a very quick recap in this section help you decide if this is worth upgrading to we've got stronger aluminum they say that they've got the strongest glass that they've had so far and also this thing is quite water resistant otherwise you've got the same design the same size display and the same pour screen to body ratio so now specs everybody loves specs so I would say that this is a bit of an upgrade we can indeed call what we have in here an upgrade from what we have from last year we have the Apple a9 chip instead of the a8 so we've got a faster CPU faster GPU this is still a dual-core CPU 1.8 4 gigahertz and the GPU is the power VR GT 7600 now just like we had last year I notice in benchmarking that this one performs just a little bit better we can attribute that to having more pixels on this display and also if they are rendering the image at a higher resolution and then down scaling that's going to affect the scores as well but it's not where I notice a huge difference I would really rate these about the same in terms of smoothness and just going about the interface they look the same to me I really have not been able to tell any difference so I would just say choose your poison whichever one suits the size that you need now taking a bit of a look of performance differences from this year's model to last year's model I do see it just a tiny teeny bit of a difference in terms of a speed or smoothness increase call us placebo maybe but I perceived that this one is just ever so slightly smoother I've seen that rotating them is about the same speed opening applications is just a little bit quicker you can try YouTube so second and a half two seconds behind this one doesn't do load faster opening up the Safari browser see this is just tiny bit faster one thing that does really stick out here though is that this now has two gigabytes of RAM versus the one gigabyte of RAM that is on the older model where this really sticks out I find is when using the Safari browser tabs do not refresh as often as they do on here that's something that always drove me nuts so here we have several web browser tabs that are open let's go ahead and touch here first you can see that YouTube is reloading this is not reloading we have Vimeo that one might have stayed open we have New York Times New York time has this has to reload we have TED Talks this has to reload something like Game Stop so all of them are reloading here on the last year's model so it's enough to prove my point that all these are staying open just fine where we're struggling here to really hit home here we can look at some benchmarks you can see that we've got a nice increase in the single core score is same thing in the multi-core scores as well so definitely faster GPU you can also look at the GPU performance as well this is GFX benchmark so you can see with Manhattan on screen we're now getting thirty eight point four frames per second versus the 20 point three before here's the off screen we have thirty nine point seven versus twenty point three then on t-rex got fifty six point six frames per second and forty two point six frames per second and then eighty versus forty six point one so this really is a nice increase again I'd really don't think that I'd be going out and buying this absolutely if I had the last year's model but if you want the latest and greatest and if you want it a little bit faster at opening applications or you like to have that extra gigabyte of RAM this might be the way to go so recapping from the performance section we do have applications that are opening faster things feel just a tad bit more fluid maybe we've got a faster CPU faster GPU more RAM and between the - the difference is very very minimal - where I really don't see it as much of a difference at all furthering talking about specs here we have an 8 megapixel camera and then we have a 12 megapixel camera here this has now jumped up to 5 megapixels on the front and then we've got the 1.2 megapixel front facing camera from last year that's really really paltry now that we have a 12 megapixel sensor we have 4k video so I'll be talking more about this in the camera section so now I want to talk about the battery life's a little bit and what we're seeing is that the batteries are actually smaller than what we had last year that's a bit unfortunate a lot of people are very upset about this now this was presumably done to make room for the 3d touch sensor this inside of here the batteries are not significantly smaller but with the iPhone 6 plus we had two thousand nine hundred and fifteen million hours it's almost three thousand million our battery inside of this and it's been pushed down to two thousand seven hundred and fifty then for the 6s we had an 1810 million power battery 1810 and now it's down at 1715 million hours now due to the efficiency of the new processor inside of this Apple is saying that the battery life is exactly the same so I would have hoped we would have seen an increase in battery life but I see that the battery life is fine the better life that's really pretty good on the 6s plus just like we saw with the 6 plus and I'm getting myself a full day of battery life on the 6s so full day a battery life on here unless I'm really running it hard then I can get through about half a day but this lasts me more than a day of battery life I really haven't had any trouble with this whatsoever so even though we have smaller batteries it's really not so bad it's just not an improvement either now Apple did decide to include a low-power mode it's supposed to get you a couple more hours of battery life at least if you're running really low so what it does when you turn it on and says low power mode temporarily reduces power consumption until you can fully charge your iPhone when this is on mail fetch hey Siri background app refresh automatic downloads and some visual effects are reduced or turned off so this is I'm sure by popular demand finally Apple has included this so that is a nice inclusion so don't freak out too much the battery life still is good on either one of these just to keep in mind if you're doing a lot of stuff with your phone throughout the day that this is going to last you part the day but this will last you a full day or more I think my biggest disappointment is that we do not have inductive charging and also we don't have fast charging as well I'm assuming that maybe next year with the iPhone 7 we'll start seeing some fast charging or inductive charging so this is one of those plug and chug things and it takes you a few hours to charge them up but at least the battery lives are not atrocious one thing that I really love about my Galaxy s6 or even my Galaxy Note 5 is being able to plug it in and within a half hour charging it up to 50 percent that's just bold in I know the battery life isn't phenomenal on this but since I have access to a wall charger pretty much all day long it's really really really nice to have so get with the program Apple no last bit I want to talk about for performance is this touch ID button and just how insanely fast this is now this might be a hindrance or this might be a good thing it just depends so Apple has made this so stinkin fast now that you can't even take a look at your notifications on your lockscreen I know a lot of people are pointing this out this is something that just completely floored me all you have to do is touch it it's unlocked already it is so fast that it's such an integrated part of the system that you can't even tell if there is a lock on this anymore here look I can just use another finger and it tells me try again so that's really ingenious to get fingerprint recognition to be that seamless is really really wonderful the only thing though now is that if you want to check your lockscreen notifications you have to touch this button up here otherwise it's just too fast that's insane see check that again barely did I even touch that I don't know how they did it but you can see on the older one you can touch it you can take your time leisurely looking at notifications on the lock screen and you can touch again there it goes or you'd have to just hold it down for a bit longer so that's a couple of seconds that wasn't slow I thought that that was actually pretty good but this is something entirely of its own class now here I have my Galaxy s6 and you can see I have to hold it down so these kind of remind me of each other but this is insanity and I'm not really sure how I feel about it you guys can let me know in the comment section below okay so let's move on to talking about the displays and also the calibration of these displays so the first thing that I want to mention is my sadness of how Apple has not boosted the resolution of the smaller version of the phone according to specs it is 1334 by 750 326 pixels per inch that's the same as last year in this day and age with displays that are hitting 4k which is ridiculous and 2k which is bad I thought it was ridiculous but actually looks nice it's just inexcusable to have a display that's barely breaking 720p it is a little over 720p but not outstandingly so we're used to having 400 pixels per inch or more so this display Apple is very much showing its age when looking at icons when looking at text you can just see that it's just not as sharp or as pleasurable to view as other displays out on the market and for how much this cost it's really not okay so I think that maybe iPhone 7 will have a higher resolution display think about it higher resolution display at 4.7 inches it will be nice and crisp it'll look great even if this was a 1080p display the pixel density would be pretty nice so I really don't know what that is all about here so if you are a display junkie you will need to go with the plus model of the phone at least this is 1080 by 1920 over 400 pixels per inch so that's pretty standard for the rest of the market and it does look good now when looking at the calibration of both of these devices this looks the same as we had last year Apple is still claiming full srgb standard they are most likely talking about the full srgb calibration standard now that's important because all the content that we watch whether it's content on YouTube or if it's even app content or if it's internet content all of that is encoded for srgb and to get that srgb content to look correct it's good to view it on a display that's calibrated for srgb so apple claims full srgb standard but the thing that sticks out to me is that this is a little bit to cool the White's that we see here the white point is a little bit too cool to be the full srgb calibration standard so of course they did some measurements and I can see that they're close to the srgb calibration standard but they are not the full srgb standard the whites should be d65 or 6500 Kelvin so they're just a little bit too blue but not horribly blue so we have seven thousand three hundred Kelvin this is seven thousand five hundred Kelvin I've seen that between the models and also just between different phones that the white point kind of varies some people say they've got a warmer white point some are a little bit like this or cooler but standard I've seen between a lot of models the more cooler looking displays so I feel that seven thousand three hundred Kelvin seven thousand five hundred is right at the brink to where it starts to look to blue if you go cooler than that I think that the colors just don't look right anymore because when you have a bluish white point the cooler color temperature it's also going to give a bluish color cast to all the colors so it still looks good it's a little bit bluish for my taste but not bad at all and in terms of the color space that we have this is meeting the full sRGB color space and the saturations look good so things don't look oversaturated it's not like an AMOLED panel like we have with Samsung so Apple is very careful about that also for the gamma which is really important not gamut but gamma they are targeting gamma to point to Apple is one of those only company that I see actually cares about getting that gamma right because if you have gamma that's too high if you boost that gamma too high it's going to not only dim the image but it's going to saturate the image as well and if the gammas too low it starts to make the image look washed out so kudos their apple their grayscale calibration is pretty good except for having a bit too much blue so Apple really didn't feel like they had to do anything to improve what they have here at least they were not lying about the brightness of these displays both of these hit over 500 nits so those get nice and bright they also talk about their contrast ratios and I see that they are truthful for that so the blacks are pretty decent they're not AMOLED black but it's not bad at all so overall I do like these displays if you care about watching content and aren't just using this for social media here in and you want to take pictures and want to be able to see details go for the larger model that's really going to be the only choice you get unfortunately maybe next year Apple just maybe next year all I can think about is that Shia LaBeouf meme do it I mean it's not going to take much seriously just boost the resolution on this thing I'd be muy muy happy so as we are closing this section talking about the display what about 3d touch is that something that's actually useful or is it really not is it more of a gimmick well my thought right now is that this 3d touch thing is in its infancy but I do feel that overall it's going to be a paradigm shift for how we interact with our phones right now you can just use some simple basic things like hold down and you can access various little menu options so this is kind of a right-click feature you can see if you hold down on the camera application you can say take selfie record video you don't have to go fully into the application everyone has seen underneath photos where you can do the peak holding down like this and then pop into the photo itself and then we can take a peek at our live photos pull upward we can share favorite this is actually where I think Apple represents this the best so if you go into the photo itself you can see that kind of Harry Potter esque live photo capturing a moment John and I being cheesy taking a selfie on our wedding day so it's really fun to be able to capture those moments or if you put pressure on the edge of the display you can get to your multitasking but the best place I see this implemented so far is holding down on the keyboard you can see you are enabled with this little cursor here it's kind of like a mouse so you can go and pick in between particular characters that's not so easy to do with your finger I can see this working in various game applications so I would not say that this isn't useful but that developers really haven't been able to fully utilize this yet I think that other OEMs are going to be coming out with something similar we see Samsung having a patent out there somewhere with this type of force touch as well so don't expect this to go away if you want to get more future proof with your iPhone maybe it would be a good idea to upgrade just take a chance on the 3d touch I'm really curious to see what we're going to be doing with this in the very near future so just like anything else you have to learn how to use it you have to remember how to use it so I have not been using it all that much because a it's new and B I really have to figure out in which way I would apply using this but like I showed you with a keyboard that's actually pretty useful so I'm expecting to see some pretty cool things with this 3d touch and then eventually in the future we probably will wonder how we are surviving without it right now but you all can let me know what you actually think about that or how you feel so we're just waiting for some developers to catch on to this and other OEMs to pick it up but I think it really will it's not going anywhere now the very last thing that I want to talk about in this review are the cameras so we've got a 12 megapixel camera up from the 8 megapixel camera that Apple has been using for a very long time and now we have a 5 megapixel camera on here instead of 1.2 so in this section I really want to keep my thoughts concise I'm hoping to just make a shoot out video later between a bunch of different phones what I feel is that overall Apple has boosted the sensor to being 12 megapixels because they wanted to have 4k video to kind of catch up with what the rest of the industry is doing unfortunately this lens is still f 2.2 so we're not seeing F 1.9 F 1.8 I really like those wider aperture lenses helps with low-light also with shallow depth of field makes a really nice effect so I don't really feel that this camera is a big enough boost to go from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 6s unfortunately I'm really relying on the iPhone 7 to be something that's more prolific and improvement so yes we have a little bit of an improvement but it's not anything huge really what I've been seeing in my testing is kind of a mixed bag of tricks generally I have a hard time telling the difference between the photos from the iPhone 6 to the iPhone 6s there are a lot of circumstances where the photos look pretty much the same unless you end up really pixel peeping but I do note that sometimes where I can tell a difference is in a little bit of detail so we see more detail now of course from an image pixel sensor to a 12 megapixel sensor sometimes I don't really notice the detail change unless it's really fine like in grass blades or something I also notice that the photos from the 6s tend to be a bit more contrast II than what we had with the iPhone 6 but even though we have an increase in detail unfortunately it doesn't match up with some of the other flagships that we have on the market namely something like the galaxy note 5 with a 16 megapixel sensor that's where I feel it really starts to fall behind also I find it insulting that there is no optical image stabilization on the iPhone 6s just on the plus model really Apple really you couldn't have put a is in both models of the phone at least now we have optical image stabilization working in video it's not just the digital image stabilization that was working that they called cinematic stabilization on the iPhone 6 plus so iPhone 6 plus did not use optical image stabilization at all in video it was just the digital image stabilization cinematic stabilization so I do have some samples of OS working and I do like the results of that I think the Apple does a pretty good job with that not for video yes social shares and moving these the same amount not for video yes I'll show you and moving these the same amount 60 frames per second I'm also happy to see that even with the megapixel boost from 8 to 12 that we do ok in low light actually it does pretty well I've been able to compare it with the galaxy note 5 and I see that this does better than the galaxy note 5 and low lighting that is until you start using the pro mode on the galaxy note 5 if you use a tripod and the pro mode you can really get some good shots great low-light shots with the galaxy note 5 but just as point-and-shoot which is where most people are going to be using this this does better in low light I see then the galaxy note 5 so there really isn't anything too astounding huge here again you have a 12 megapixel sensor up from an 8 megapixel sensor so I see a little bit of boost in detail on some things but in a lot of photos I can barely tell the difference between them at all unless I really start to pixel peep and zoom in and look around so I would not call the camera a huge reason to jump up from the iPhone 6 to the 6s I'm really going to be looking towards the iPhone 7 for that but we do have some improvement and we do now have 4k video which is really nice to have I do like apples camera interface though although I find it to be too simplistic sometimes and there's just not any manual controls but it is very simple you can just slide upward to go between a couple of different modes here I really don't like where they have put the settings for the camera very strangely so you need to go underneath settings photos and camera to be able to control a couple of the settings such as recording video so you need to go underneath here to select 4k at 30 frames per second 1080p at 60 frames per second 1080p 3 so on and so forth that's kind of an inexcusable to have that there it's a little strange even your option for camera grid is under here why remarkable things note though underneath Slovo here is that we do have the ability to shoot in 1080p you in slow motion at 120 frames per second so that's nice because we were stuck at 720p before I guess they keep things by default and if you really want to change some options you need to dig around inside the phone but it's just kind of counterintuitive so there's that grid there so by default you have live photos on and I really haven't been using live photos all that much except for a few times on my wedding day because you end up capturing 3 seconds of things and a lot of the time I'm just capturing things I didn't actually want to capture if we've got HDR auto on/off we've got our flash course now you can change to the front-facing camera here and you can choose flash as well here there is no actual flash but it's just the display itself so you can take a picture you can see the display itself becomes really bright to flash in your face it is nice that we do have auto HDR now for the front-facing camera it's just a very simplistic interface there's not too much to be said about it so this is all that I want to say for now between these phones I think that it is a marginal upgrade we do have some improvements some improvements that might be enough for some people to upgrade to such as if you want a little bit of better water resistance although I would not still recommend taking this around water if your phone Ben into oblivion it might be worth getting one of these guys over the one before we've got that 3d touch although this generation I don't really know that we're going to be doing much with it it's probably going to become more prominent later on we've got a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner which sometimes I think it's actually a downfall got battery life that's the same got a little bit of improvement on the camera and you have the option for 4k video though it's not the greatest this is a phone that I think I'd be happy enough to use as my daily driver and I have been using these as my
