**The Spirit of Ecstasy**

Oi, don't be a berk! Me's only joshin'. You don't have to go to uni to recognize this old automaton. They call it the **Spirit of Ecstasy**, they does.

**Meet Rolls-Royce**

This fit bird is the Queen's knickers, a fancy pants in dependability, it is. This is everything you need to know to get up to speed on Rolls-Royce.

**The Origins of Rolls-Royce**

In 1904, engineer Henry Royce met businessman slash car enthusiast Charles Rolls in a quaint Manchester hotel for a spot of tea and to pow-wow about Rolls-Royce's first car. The Royce 10 was powered by a two-cylinder gasoline engine with, you guessed it, 10 very British ponies under the hood. I think they call them Shetlands.

**The Birth of a Luxury Brand**

Driving was more of a hobby for the rich than an actual mode of transportation. But Royce's cars were nothing like their competition. That's because they were built under his strict code, just like the Night's Watch.

enginewith, you guessed it, 10 veryBritish ponies under the hood.I think they call them Shetlands.Driving was more of a hobby for the richthan an actual mode of transportation. But Royce's cars were nothinglike their competition. That's because they were builtunder his strict code, justlike the Night's Watch."Strive for perfectionin everything you do."Take the best thatexists and make it better."When it does not exist, design it."Accept nothing nearlyright or good enough."Sick.Charles Rolls was a cylinder snob, who preferred four or six-cylinder cars. But he couldn't believe howremarkably smooth and quietRoyce's cars were.Rolls set aside his borewhore waysand told Royce, "If you build'em, then I'll sell 'em."And thus, Rolls-Royce was born.In 1906, Rolls-Royce debutedtheir first major car designnamed the 40/50because that was the car's taxable hrsprs. The seven liter, six-cylinder enginewas way ahead of its time, relying on pressurized engine lubrication, dual ignition, and advanced carburetionto give the car both a flexibleand smooth power delivery. We're talking Kenny G smooth. The car was released in 1907,and to prove how reliableit was, Claude Johnson, the commercial and managingdirector of Rolls-Royce,ordered one of the cars to be built withsilver plated fittings. It was nicknamed Silver Ghost. The Silver Ghost was driven 15,000 milesand never broke down.Even the people atMercedes Benz were like."Sacre bleu."Because it was so unbelievable, they forgot what holy crap was in German. The 40/50 became the pinnacleof automotive reliability.Wealthy people from all over the worldlined up to pay the whopping, unheard of $4000 for the car.In today's money, to befair, that's like 105 grand. And that was just for the rolling chassis. You then had to take thecar to a coachbuilderand drop another 50 to100 grand on the doors, seats, and body panels.Well, these rich bastards, they didn't care, and as Henry Royce used to say,"The quality will remain longafter the price is forgotten."In 1913, the 40/50 finishedthe grueling 1820-milerally known as Alpenfahrt.Alpenfahrt?Alpenfiat.And by 1914, even the Britishmilitary was buying thembecause they wereliterally built like tanks. After being crowned theking of reliability,Rolls-Royce set their sights on becomingthe king of power and speed. In the late 1920s, theydesigned their legendaryR engine. It was originally madefor air racing purposes. It's tough shoving a 37liter V12 2800 hrsprsengine under the hood of a car,but in a plane, the R engine helpedthe submarine S.6B prop plane becomethe fastest machine on Earthwhen it flew 407.5 miles per hour. That's jet propulsion speed. Also, why name a plane which is awesomeafter a submarine which is less awesome? But also equally as awesomebecause the water is justlike the sky for underground.Car enthusiast, Sir Malcolm Campbell, took notice of the airplane'sachievement and was like,"Maybe I can shove thatRolls-Royce engine in a car."So then he did it.And he named the car, Bluebird. In 1935, it became the firstcar to go over 300 milesper freaking hour in 1935.- On the first gear, Bluebird's capable ofgoing 110 miles an hour. And on second gear, she can dojust over 205 miles an hour.- That's faster than anymodern Ferrari, McLarenor even a Koenigsegg. What the hell have we beendoing for the last 80 years?Colby, put up a picture of this thing.Look at it.It's almost a hundred years old.It went over 300 miles per,did it even have seat belts?Probably not. With Rolls-Royce poweringthe fastest thing on landand in the air, all that wasleft was to conquer the sea.In 1938, they completed the trifecta,by setting the water speedrecord of 103.91 miles per,in a hydroplaning powerboatnamed the Bluebird K3.Because I guess they ran out of names. After Rolls-Royce had provenit can build the most reliableand the most powerful engines, they set their sights onbuilding the most luxurious cars. The only problem with thatwas up until this point, they had only made engines and chassis. They didn't make the bodies. So in the late 1930s,they started bringingluxury coachwork companies likePark Ward Limited in house. The infamous Rolls-RoyceWraith was a thing of beauty, just like Big Bro,but was still being producedby several different coachbuilders. In 1949, the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawnbecame the first model to be offeredwith an actual Rolls-Royce bod on her.It was a thing of elegance and beauty, and its inline six couldget up to 94 miles an hour. The Silver Dawn was followedby the Silver Cloud in 1955and marked the beginning of aconsistent aesthetic design, which included the giant Parthenon grilleand the Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. With body manufacturing sorted out,Rolls-Royce started addingopulent and luxurious componentsto their cars, things like electricrazors and cigar humidors.Rolls-Royce, which once wassynonymous with reliabilityand power, was now thought of primarilyas the fanciest vehicle on the road. And anything associated with the carwas also consideredfancy, be it celebrity,a businessperson, or thisyummy yummy brown mustard.- Pardon me, would youhave any Grey Poupon?- But of course.- Tres chic. From 1955 through the 70s,Rolls-Royce made bespokedversions of their exclusive carswith relatively few aesthetic changes. Why?Because Rolls-Royce is its own aesthetic. But by the 1980s, failing global marketsand shrinking sales turnedthe once-great automakerinto a tragic tale.Rolls-Royce was sold andsplit and re-sold and re-splitover the next two decades.Nobody really knew whatto do with the brand. If you're only selling to a few people, how do you stay afloat? Finally, in 1998, BMWtook over Rolls-Royceminus the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot. They could only borrow that which they didfor 40 million dollars. And in 2003, Rolls-Royceopened its brand newGoodwood plant in Sussex, Englandand totally redeemed itself. The new Rolls-Royce was like,"If you want to buy, like,"a kind of fancy car, youcan go buy a Cadillac,"a Lexus, a Mercedes."But if you want to drop adeuce in the executive bathroom,"you can buy a Rolls."In 2003, they demonstrated a recommitmentto giving their cars more power.More power, baby. They launched the ultra-luxuriousRolls-Royce Phantom VII in 2003.The car was a marvelof modern engineering, just like George Lucas's Phantom Menace. That's like the best Star Wars movie. The Phantom VII was a gamechanger for Rolls-Roycewith its 6.8 liter V12 enginelaunching the nearly three-tonvehicle from zero to 60in under six seconds. But it was the highlycustomizable aspects of the carthat made it stand out.It marked a merging of Rolls-Royce's"We make the greatestluxury cars in the world"pedigree with their "Wemake the most powerful"kick-ass engines" origins.Rolls-Royce realized thattheir exclusive clientswant exclusive carsbecause nothing's worsethan spending a half a million buckson a car and then seeing adozen of the same exact carin a parking lot.Believe me, I should know.So Rolls was like, "Wegive all of our customers"44,000 paint hues to choose from."For the upholstery, the standard leathercomes exclusively from Simmental bullsraised in moist regions withrich grasses to graze onso their hides don't dry out.And the interior team doesn'tlimit the color to a measly44,000 hues. They will let you pick any color you want, even made up colors likeJames Pumpernickel Brown. And if you don't like bull hide, you can choose fromlots of other materialslike ostrich, alligator, even rodent pelts. For trim pieces, thereare hundreds of woodand synthetic trims to choose from.If you want something superomega Toblerone fancy, you can have literal diamondsinlaid into the trim.Sure you can choose the colorof your $700 door umbrellasand of course the Spirit ofEcstasy comes in your choice ofmetals or illuminated crystal. But while opulent, allthese customizable featuresdon't really change the car.In 2014, Rolls-Roycedecided to show the worldit could make cars that could handle too.And they unveiled the reimagined Wraith. This entry level Rollsstarts at just 317 grandand squeezes 624 horsepower from its V12.It's purposefully lighter and more nimble.Yes, it's an enormous Rolls-Royce,but its more compact wheel baseand sportier suspension meanyou're gonna want totake it to the canyonsinstead of your chauffeur. In 2017, Rolls unveiledthe most expensive new carin the history of newcars up until this year, the Rolls-Royce Sweptail. They used the privatelycommissioned 13 million dollar caras a conceptual launching pointfor the newest bespokeoption known as Coachbuild.Their Coachbuild service offers customerswho are unrestrained by time or moneythe opportunity to design andbuild their own custom Rolls. The ever-present Phantomnow makes 563 horsepowerfrom a twin turbo V12.The Ghost II is soldiering onand feels as classically newas it did when it came out.The Wraith is stillkicking through corners, and it's been joined by itsconvertible cousin the Dawn.Nice name, nicer looks. They also have the all blackBlack Badge edition Wraiththat makes 40 more hrsprsfor you guys with (bleep)you money and tattoos. They even have an SUV now.The larger Cullinan SUV is everythingRolls-Royce has ever been and more. It's named after thelargest diamond ever found, and before you get upset thatit's not named after a ghostlike the other ones, thediamond is named afterThomas Cullinan and he's dead. The Cullinan is unique among Rollsesbecause of its rear liftgate and all-wheel drive. The new Ghost isn't out yet,but even in its camo coverings,it looks leaner and more aggressivethan its earlier brethrenand that's saying a lot.Rolls-Royces aren't foreverybody, that's clear. But even if you're cruisingin some other $500,000 car,if one pulls up next toyou, you'll feel that stingof envy, wishing youwere driving that Rolls. Thanks for watching Donut Media. If you guys didn't watch it,we wouldn't get to make it.If you like this
