The Disappointing Truth About the 2016 MacBook Pro
Like completely the same going from one to the other doing tasks I never really noticed a difference and I really really wanted to but it's not necessarily Apple's fault CPU growth has been very slow as Intel did switch to a new cycle one with a new architecture and two refining it in terms of speed so you can't blame Apple but you know with the GPU increase the GPU Choice Apple chose efficiency overpower and us as Pros we buy this as a MacBook Pro it is not pro the the choices they made in these are very mid-tier just MacBook okay I did run a couple tests and I was even more disappointed after running those so I exported a 22-minute video 22 almost 23 minutes in both 4K resolution same files same order same everything same Final Cuts latest update 10.3.1 so it was actually almost 3 minutes faster on the old one using the same program versus the new one so that blew my mind I had a suspicion that it wasn't faster than the old one but I didn't think it would be slower not only that the old one got a higher geek bench score what what that didn't make any sense to me these are both fully maxed out MacBooks and the old one was faster in a geek bench and exporting a 4K 23 minute video why did I buy this why did I buy the new one um yeah I spent $4,300 versus the 2800 I bought the fully speced old one for and it's not any faster so I made those gaming videos and I've been playing on the side some Battlefield it really got me hooked and I got to say I'm you know well into the campaign and it's not bad 1920 x 1200 with medium settings it's very playable 30 to 40 frames per second so for the price and I'm going to say this again it is awful but it is okay you can game on it just don't expect to do anything very high up very high-end settings or anything like that.
Now, I was very surprised about this one battery life sucks just another reason I hate the new Macbook Pro now I actually get about 50 to 60% of the same usage battery LifeWise on the new one versus my old one I've always really thought the old one was really really good in terms of battery life I could watch a ton of videos a ton of browsing on the internet and it would last me a good 8 to n hours no lie like it is so good the new one no it is not as efficient I'll notice the battery life is almost half of the old one at times and that really really surprised me.
On the other hand, there are some good points about the new MacBook Pro. One thing I do love is the speakers okay wow app you guys did so so well on the speakers on the new Macbook Pro the old ones were good these are great the base is very nice very booming the sound is so Crystal Clear especially the louder it gets the it stays the same Clarity it's amazing well done on the speakers apple. Another thing I like about the new MacBook Pro is that its fans are very quiet it runs very quietly that's what I love about it the old one feels like a vacuum cleaner now compared to the new one.
Overall, my conclusion is that when I pick this thing up it feels old I never thought I would say this but the trackpad is so tiny the keys are mushy it's heavier bigger bulkier I will prefer the new one design wise I don't understand why my new fully maxed out MacBook Pro is slower in certain tasks versus the old MacBook Pro that that just blew my mind. So, I'm going to be honest with you guys and when I pick this thing up it feels old.
I do think there are some good things about the 2016 MacBook Pro, though. If you're thinking about buying one in terms of hardware like the speakers the trackpad the keyboard This display it is so topnotch. The performance itself is a little disappointing for the price. But if you guys are going to buy one the one thing that you should do is Max the GPU that's priority number one secondary to that is the storage and last the CPU it really doesn't make a difference just 200 MHz over the old one like I bumped mine it's such a small difference unless you are a video editor you 3D model you're really not going to feel that.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis is what life feels like with the new Macbook Pro dongles dongli itis what's up guys everything Apple Pro here let's go ahead and review the 2016 MacBook Pro I'm going to be talking about both 13 and 15in models but mainly focusing on the 15 so I've been using the machine for a good week now I've had it I got to say I've got a good impression of what this machine is I believe it or not I actually edit all of my videos on my MacBook Pro as my Mac Pro is starting to feel as a really really bad so I'm going to be giving you guys my personal opinion on the MacBook Pro about everything I care about including performance battery life features design all of that good stuff all in one video so let's go ahead and get into it and a preface I just want to say this is the fully max out version I was doing the earlier gaming videos with 2.9 GHz AMD Pro 460 and the 2 tabt of storage so I've got mine I've been using it let's start with the design so pulling this thing out of the box the first thing that struck me was how much thinner it was when I first got the 2012 retina I actually was very surprised as I was coming from an even thicker MacBook Pro so it is a very nice upgrade very stylish very compact it's actually a lot smaller not only in terms of thickness but in total volume as well compared to the last year's 2015 version so the design is great it's fantastic the little details that I like uh the hinge so the hinge is fully metal now no plastic on it for for me that's great because I open this thing so many times per day and to have a little bit of a better constructed hinge is definitely a great little feature and plus it's seamless it looks better too so the overall form facture is nice but the display itself the bezels have shrunk that means it has the same size display but overall smaller form factur which means it'll be easier to carry around but for me that doesn't really matter I don't really take it places it's also lighter as well so that's very nice very nice touch in all of those fronts it really really sucks that it doesn't have a glowing Apple logo anymore one of those things that just made a Macbook special is now gone the Apple logo is still there but I got to say there was something special about it sometimes I would take my MacBook and it would be late at night I'd go back into my room and I wouldn't have to turn on any lights because the Apple logo would illuminate the hallway for me so that little tiny detail is gone Apple removed a lot of things on the new Macbook Pro besides the Apple logo the SD card slot the mag safe a lot of iconic things are now gone it's very nice that there are now colors on the MacBook Pro I wish Apple would have done something like a black to match my iPhone a matte black that would have been really really cool maybe they will with time but it's nice to have a new choice for color not just the plain old silver so let's get to using this thing I actually mentioned I've been editing videos on this thing for a while so that means you have to interact with the keyboard and with the trackpad did I mention the trackpad is absolutely huge it's twice as big as the old one and it's a strange thing adjusting to new technology because I was looking at my MacBook and then when I went over to this one to start reviewing with the older one something didn't fit something wasn't right I'm like why does this thing look so old and the track pad the trackpad that little tiny thing right there gives the MacBook a huge appearance of something new futuristic this big long trackpad and it's actually great for functionality where if I run out of space I'm dragging something to another folder you know there's so much more space to Move Along on that trackpad I haven't had any issues with my Palms interfering with anything that I'm doing on the trackpad I heard some people but for me it really was not an issue so I got to say trackpad is a huge plus and of course how can we miss that keyboard butterfly number two so this time around Apple has made it a little bit more clicker you can definitely travel more but still it feels like you're almost typing on a flat surface just a little bit of input now I never thought I would say this but I actually like it I don't want to go back to my old keyboard when I do when I type on it it feels like I'm typing on a sponge to be honest there's no bounce back well obviously there is but on the new one when you type it bounces back so quickly it feels like I'm typing way faster the response when you click it is almost instant and not to mention the sound it sounds so clicky so nice I really really like that the old one it's very mushy and I I do like it it takes some time to get used to the new keyboard but I think you guys will not want to go back once you begin using it on a daily only thing I don't like is that the keys are spaced together more closely than the old ones so it's going to take me a while to you know get used to that spacing because I'm always clicking on the wrong Keys when I'm trying to get to the right one now has it been tough adjusting to USBC I gave $27 for three adapters and I've been using those and overall it doesn't feel any different the only thing that's different is the fact that there's no mag safe which really really sucks I mean if I trip over my laptop it means I might have a few ,000 problem now versus before just yanking out also the only thing that bothers me about usb see is I can't plug in a port without holding the laptop on top it's too light like it's these little things that bother me on the old one you could just slip it in it never had an issue with that but now you do and Dong gidas it really does suck having to have so many adapters for all my stuff having so much things sticking out of the MacBook Pro just right there especially the SD card that's what I hated the most it was so nice just to be able to have a place to put it in the old one and yeah they had to get rid of it in the name thinness I have to have an adapter for my SD card now that really really sucks so yeah it's a pain in the ass but over the next few years as it becomes standard of course we're going to completely forget about this whole toothing period it's going to be just a bad memory the display although it's the same resolution is actually quite good it has the new P3 color gamut so Vibrance just pure Vibrance colors pump you're getting so many new colors on that display and not only are there a new colors it's also brighter as well so at Max brightness I can certainly tell the difference between the old one and the new one that was actually one of my biggest complaints about the old one so the display oh my goodness yes yes yes it's a great upgrade and I don't even think we need more resolution because at this point the GPU can't even handle full resolution on this MacBook in most areas most games so 4K although it would be nice is not necessary I mean this display is fantastic as is now as nice as the touch bar is has it influenced anything at all and I got to say no I mean when I show someone my new Macbook I'll show them the touch bar because it's the coolest thing about the new one and having a secondary display just for those keys how intuitive it is how beautiful the display looks it's nice I mean it's something you show this MacBook off with but is it necessary have I used it do I even need it and the truth is no I mean it's nice in Final Cut to have a couple shortcuts there but they just they're just out of the way you have to reach so far up to click them it would be easier for me to just do my keyboard shortcut on the bottom and get it over with now I think it's a lot like 3D touch when that first came out it was a new technology there wasn't really much use for it with time Apple's been adding more and more stuff and I'm hoping with iOS 11 they'll add even more to it but it's the beginning it's going to take a while for us to get adjusted to it for it to become necessary but for now it is just a gimmick and I got to admit that it really hasn't helped me be a better video editor a better MacBook user in any way really it's nice to have a nice browser for your emoji but doesn't really make my life any easier I got to say now you guys may have your own opinion on that but for me it hasn't really changed anything what I got to give Apple a big plus for is Touch ID now this is a very great time-saving feature so in Safari browser if you have all your payment details in there with Apple pay you just touch your finger and you pay for something it's so easy it's really intuitive very easy to use and it's a second generation touch ID so it's very very fast I absolutely love the Touch ID on the new Macbook Pro so performance now I think the two videos I posted about gaming on a MacBook spoke for themselves but my honest opinion on the performance is disappointing I expected at least a 10 to 25% increase in video editing speed in anything that I'm doing even gaming and I didn't even get that it feels the same honestly like completely the same going from one to the other doing tasks I never really noticed a difference and I really really wanted to but it's not necessarily Apple's fault CPU growth has been very slow as Intel did switch to a new cycle one with a new architecture and two refining it in terms of speed so you can't blame Apple but you know with the GPU increase the GPU Choice Apple chose efficiency overpower and us as Pros we buy this as a MacBook Pro it is not pro the the choices they made in these are very mid-tier just MacBook okay I did run a couple tests and I was even more disappointed after running those so I exported a 22-minute video 22 almost 23 minutes in both 4K resolution same files same order same everything same Final Cuts latest update 10.3.1 so it was actually almost 3 minutes faster on the old one using the same program versus the new one so that blew my mind I had a suspicion that it wasn't faster than the old one but I didn't think it would be slower not only that the old one got a higher geek bench score what what that didn't make any sense to me these are both fully maxed out MacBooks and the old one was faster in a geek bench and exporting a 4K 23 minute video why did I buy this why did I buy the new one um yeah I spent $4,300 versus the 2800 I bought the fully speced old one for and it's not any faster so I made those gaming videos and I've been playing on the side some Battlefield it really got me hooked and I got to say I'm you know well into the campaign and it's not bad 1920 x 1200 with medium settings it's very playable 30 to 40 frames per second so for the price and I'm going to say this again it is awful but it is okay you can game on it just don't expect to do anything very high up very high-end settings or anything like that now I was very surprised about this one battery life sucks just another did so so well on the speakers on the new Macbook Pro the old ones were good these are great the base is very nice very booming the sound is so Crystal Clear especially the louder it gets the it stays the same Clarity it's amazing well done on the speakers apple and a small little Point uh the new Macbook Pro fans are very quiet it runs very quietly that's what I love about it the old one feels
