The BMW 6 Series has made headlines recently due to its innovative design feature - a special paint coating called Vantablack, which absorbs an astonishing 35% of light that shines on it. This technology, developed by Surrey NanoSystems, makes the car appear almost invisible, giving it an otherworldly appearance. The paint's heat shield properties have also made it suitable for use in space exploration.
The BMW 6 Series has been paired with a sleek glass box, complete with flashing lights and opaque sections that provide camouflage. While this car may seem like any old model at first glance, it's actually the second production model from the VW ID family. The ID3 is set to launch next year, and its design is centered around the concept of the "caucusing" SUV, a term used to describe the social behavior of animals gathering in small groups. This approach has led to the creation of a coupe version with reduced headroom and boot space.
The ID3's appeal lies in its ability to sell over 100,000 all-electric units per year by 2020, and it aims to do so by targeting American buyers who are fond of SUVs. To achieve this goal, the car features rear-wheel drive only, with a most powerful model boasting 200 horsepower. The four-wheel-drive variant offers an additional 100 horsepower motor on the front axle, providing improved traction.
In contrast, the new Defender concept has taken a different approach to design. Its AI Trail model is part of a family of four cars, each with its unique features and capabilities. The off-road capable SUV is designed to accommodate various driving scenarios, from beach vacations to mountainous terrain. This car boasts an impressive 1000 Newton meters of torque in each wheel, allowing for enhanced traction and stability.
One of the AI Trail's most innovative features is its self-inflating and self-deflating tires, which detect the driving situation and adjust accordingly. The dampers built into the tire provide an additional two inches of suspension travel, making the vehicle more suitable for off-road excursions. Furthermore, the car does not feature traditional headlights but instead deploys drones to illuminate the road ahead when night falls.
The AI Trail concept also relies heavily on smartphone integration, with all controls and dials accessible through the device. This trend is expected to continue in the future, where smartphones will become increasingly important. The vehicle's luggage space provides ample room for devices and accessories, while its seating arrangement transforms into hammocks for camping enthusiasts. As drones fly overhead, illuminating the surroundings, the AI Trail concept embodies a unique blend of innovative technology and exciting features.
The new Defender concept has also left an impression on designers. Its ability to adapt to various environments is truly remarkable, making it an essential vehicle for those seeking adventure. The AI Trail model's emphasis on environmental sustainability and smart design makes it a standout in the automotive world. As drivers navigate various landscapes, this car will continue to prove itself as a reliable companion.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhere we go then top gear's top five SUVs from the Frankfurt Motor Show and rumor has it we've got to keep this one quiet that Land Rover might be unveiling something quite important of this show maybe even a new defender there it is look the brand new defender had to start with this one didn't we I've already done a full walk-around of the 110 and the 90 that's already on our YouTube channel already on top near comm go and check that out for all the details but I think it's still worth having a little look around Land Rovers stand because they've gone big this year and there's a few details a few accessories a few different versions that I want to show you starting with this which is the 110 fitted with the Explorer pack so that's the full house off-road accessory pack snorkel roof rack roof ladder a kind of panty a box on the other side that you'll see knobbly tyres this is the one that will take you across the Sahara Desert what's interesting about this car is I've now had a few hours to digest social media reaction to it and the overwhelming feeling is positive people like this car I love this car said it already in the other video but there are a few bud comments that have been aimed at air one that I heard that I particularly liked was that it looks a bit like the Skoda Yeti hmm the other one is it looks a bit like the Fiat 500x wash your mouth out don't be so silly it's a fantastic looking thing it's doing just what it needed to do it's got the boxiness it's utilitarian it's modern though it's a new defender it's got all the technology anyway don't get me started that's the 110 come down here because there's a few interesting versions I think you need to look at the first of this one here so this is a a 90 model follow it round and you'll see what makes this one different on the steel wheels as I've already said these are the ones to go for how often do you say that the standard wheels because the wheels you get chucked in for free anyway other ones you won Land Rover Defender but this is the commercial version so I'm told it will go on sale next year in about a year's time for 35 grand plus v80 in the UK no seats in the back just load carrying ability and that's a nice little touch isn't it Wilks brothers 4x4 specialist since 1948 a reference to the Wilks brothers the founding fathers of the lam Rover brand who made the original iconic series one not a fan of this spec if I'm honest big wheels black bonnet not doing it for me but this is the thing about the defender that's not a bad thing there will be lots of people out there who want that kind of calm fully modded twisted look to their defender and they can have it do what you like maybe another 90 model this is finished in the green with the matte wrap this doesn't have the steel wheels on it this has got the 22 I believe the biggest wheel so this is kind of the urban spec this is the one that's taken on the cons and giving people that won't leave the kingsroad the ability to Swan around on big wheels and not have to worry too much about off-roading a couple of things I want to mention in the video I said oh yes this is the five-door model and the 110 is a seven-seater obviously that has a slip of the tongue this is a three-door with five seats or six seats if you go for the extra jump seat in the front the 90 that featured in our video had the winch on the front now it's a cool thing is a cool accessory but this is what the front end of the car really looks like I realized that we didn't give you a proper look at the defenders new face prices now this starts from 40 grand the 110 starts from forty five grand but of course by the time you've put the set of wheels on you want you've added a jump seat in the front you've had a few little choice options like this matte wrap or well anything really that price is going to go up and up so there have been a few comments saying it's too expensive well you know what it's a modern premium SUV loaded with technology it can't be priced in line with the old defender those days are gone this is a new car yes it's expensive but by god is it capable okay so we're almost getting used to the fact that say it and spun off its performance arm Cupra a separate entity and you know what if they keep making concept cars that look as good as this one we might let them off the hook entirely this is called the Tavor scan concept I hope I pronounced that right an all-electric SUV concept it's built on the same meb platform as the VW id3 the production version of which is just across the hall the interesting thing about this is because VW Group has now established its electric box of bits its platform its technology is set in stone now it can start in fun and messing around with the top hats that it puts on top of that skateboard platform and of course we're gonna be seeing a lot of SUVs in the future but I'll tell you what isn't it a good-looking thing this and what's interesting is when you try and change a combustion engine car to electric where you have to blank off grills that were there for air intakes originally but this one no you can design it from scratch you can have more fun with the front-end you can make it concave you can give it dimpling you don't need to suck in air through there because batteries have less cooling requirements around the back another little interesting design feature this 3d taillight signature that runs right across the back it even makes that coupe for a stamp logo look pretty cool I'm not ready to forgive them for that quite yet but we're on our way they're carbon fiber trim everywhere copper detailing as is the Cooper way and on the inside well it's standard concept car fare twinky lights everywhere lots of carbon fiber and one interesting feature I wanted to point out in the middle of the dash a 13 inch screen that can tip towards the driver or towards the passenger so there's no need of an additional passenger screen plunked above the glovebox what lit to 280 miles on a charge naught to 60 6.5 seconds the numbers are good and the signs are good for this card you know what I'll bet my house and it in two years they're going to put one of these in to put apologies for the lighting that looks a bit like we're in a brothel but how clever is this BMW has found a way of hiding it should we say dubious looking x6 in plain sight look at that it's covered in a special kind of paint developed by a British company no less called Surrey nanosystems I think the paint's called vantablack it absorbs all but naught point naught 35% of light that shines on it which basically just makes it look like a hole in the universe it's a material a spray a coating if you like that's been used on various components that have been sent into space because it has heat shield properties - but hey anything that can turn the BMW 6 into a black hole has to be a good thing because I like to make things as difficult as possible for our cameraman the next car on our list is in the glass box with glass that flashes and goes opaque occasionally that's because if you peer through here it's a curl in camouflage but like any old car this is the second production model from the VW ID family so the id3 is being revealed today in production form this is the next one it's going to launch next year and it's based around the idea cause concept so surprise surprise it's an SUV this one here looks like the normal shape as you'd expect there is going to be a coupe a version basically the same car just with less Headroom and less boot space in the back I don't know why either now the point of this car is they want to sell a hundred thousand all-electric ID bwz a year by 2020 and to do so they need to sell quite a lot of them in America this is the carbon that it's going to appeal to American buyers because they love an SUV the difference to the id3 that is rear-wheel drive only so the most powerful model is 200 horsepower rear-wheel drive this 4-wheel Drive of course so 200 horsepower motor on the rear axle and then 100 horsepower motor on the front axle four-wheel drive 300 horsepower and 83 kilowatt hour battery in a range of over 300 miles anyway there we go it's a stripy car in a box get some nice shots tape Cheers nope this isn't actually a moon buggy this is our DS latest off-road SUV concept it's called the AI trail and what's significant here is that is part of a family of four cars over there you've got the AI race kind of the future of the r8 an electric race car a supercar if you like this is the off-roader down there that AI me which is the small city car and down the far end the a icon which is the level 5 fully autonomous car the idea is that in the future you could potentially have a subscription to all four of these and then just pick the one you want depending on whether you're you know doing the north coast 500 in your electric race car or you want to go and drive up a mountain which is what this car should do and it's got some absolutely brilliant features on this thing firstly it's all electric of course obviously a motor in each wheel 1000 Newton meters of torque which should be pretty handy these wheels yes they self inflate and self deflate depending on whether you're driving on sand or Road or whatever situation it detects you're in and there's also dampers built into the tire so you get an extra two inch of suspension travel just from the wheels they're really pulling their weight these things up here this is very cool you'll notice the car doesn't actually have headlights no that's because it's got drones instead yeah up there a couple of drones that deploy when it gets dark and fly ahead of the car illuminating the road in front of you and then when you get to your picnic spot your camping spot well they can fly over the campfire and illuminate whatever you're doing their genius climbing up into the AI trail concept a couple of things I want to mention first is there is basically no dials in front of you everything runs through your smartphone so in the future your smartphone is going to become even more important and probably even more addictive instead of that you've got this huge luggage space in front of you where the - and all the dials and screens would normally be handy and behind you it gets better because while these seats look pretty mean for rear passengers compared to the front seats well actually when you get camping spot you can remove these and use them as hammocks for chilling out while your drones fly overhead and illuminate your lovely twinkly evening it's all quite clever isn't it I think the new defender needs to pull its finger outhere we go then top gear's top five SUVs from the Frankfurt Motor Show and rumor has it we've got to keep this one quiet that Land Rover might be unveiling something quite important of this show maybe even a new defender there it is look the
