The First Drive Reviews Are In: Nissan's 2023 Z Car Takes On Toyota's Supra
The first drive reviews are flowing in, and signs point to the fact that Nissan has done a wonderful job on the 2023 Z. This is great news for Z car fans and fans of sports cars in general, but I'm curious if this car brings enough to the table to dissuade potential Super Buyers from buying the Toyota Supra. Let's take a look and see how they stack up.
When it comes to style, this one is of course subjective, but I have to go with the Z here. I think Nissan nailed the retro-made modern looks and it's a proper evolution of the 370Z lines with great nods to past models like those Z32s tail lights on the Supra. There's a lot to deal with looks-wise, and for some, it's a hit. However, I just think it's perhaps a bit too busy. The Z will age better inside the Supra, clearly showing off a lot, as it borrowed from BMW. It's a clean, well-laid out cabin with great seats in the Z. Nissan did a wonderful job updating from 370Z's cabin, and this space looks great too. I think there's more charm found in the Z with the Supra being more business-like. So, this one is almost a wash, and really depends on what you're after from your sports car.
Power is not subjective, however, both cars use a three-liter six-cylinder engine and both are turbocharged with a single turbo on the Supra and twins on the Z. The Supra inline-six makes horsepower, while the V6 on the Z makes 400 horsepower. Still, thanks to weight gearbox tuning and far better tires, the Supra is quicker to 60 and through a quarter mile. Not by a ton, but the Supra definitely puts its power down a bit better. The Z makes a bit less torque than the Supra, and the Supra also gets to its peak horsepower earlier in the rev range. However, you might be able to save some money when you buy the Z to upgrade to a better set of tires. A base 2023 Z starts at $41,015, while the top-spec Z Proto starts at $54,015, and there's a Z Performance trim in the middle at $51,015.
The Supra, on the other hand, starts above the base Z, with a three-liter costing around $53 grand to start. The premium trim rises to a bit over $56,000, and top-spec A91 MT models should be well into the mid-60,000 range. So, there's a very healthy price premium between the two machines, but I don't think there's that great of a performance premium here. If it were my own money, and since I've long been a Z car fan, let's put all the bias out of the table. I'm going with the Nissan here, I think Nissan did a great job on this one, and I'm happy to hear all the early reviews are very positive.
Stay tuned because we're getting our hands on one here for a proper road test in just a few weeks. For now, though, let us know what you think in the comments: Are you Team Supra or Team Z? No matter what you choose, I think we can all agree that it's pretty awesome to see the Z and Supra battling it out again right now. If we can just convince Mitsubishi and Mazda to get back into the mix, then we've got a real contest on our hands.
