"It was the original mid-engine supercar." It started a war between Ferrari and Lamborghini that still rages today.

Some say it's the most beautiful car ever made, and I'm one of 'em. Everybody knows Lamborghini's freaking amazing, and you know what kicked it all off - a car with eyelashes.

**Everything You Need to Know About the Lamborghini Miura**

This is everything you need to know to get up to speed on the Lamborghini Miura. My best friend, Jay Leno, has two of 'em. (eight bit music) I'm really excited about this episode because it's brought to you by my favorite car company, Lamborghini and Gameloft, to launch a new racing video game, Asphalt Nine: Legends.

**The Terzo Millennio Concept Car**

The Terzo Millennio concept car is exclusively available in Asphalt Nine Legends, which is totally free to play. Plus, Gameloft is sending me and one of you to Italy to check the real thing out in real life. Stick around to find out how you can win the trip.

**(Engine Revving)**

We've already made an episode on the history of the entire Lamborghini company, and you've already watched that, right? What, you didn't? Well, check it out right there, you bozo!

**The Founder of Lamborghini**

Anyway, to quickly recap, Ferruccio Lamborghini was a rich businessman who made tractors. He drove Ferraris but wasn't super thrilled with the comfort and reliability of said Ferraris so he decided, like a normal man, to start his very own luxury sports car company.

350GT,Lamborghini's team of young engineerswere already getting antsyto make race carsinstead of straight cars.Gian Paolo Dallara was like,"Man, Ferruccio just wants us to design"front engine touringcars and not race cars."And Paolo Stanzani was like,"Wouldn't it be awesomeif he let use build"a race rear mid-engine carthat could win at the track?"And New Zealand transplant,Bob Wallace, was like,"Well, maybe we could work on making"a more race inspired street car"in our free time after work."When they presented theiridea to Lamborghini he said,"Sure, why not?""Yay, thanks Ferruccio.""Alright, alright, youknuckleheads get out of here."Oh, love those guys."So the guys excitedly got to workputting together a concept. They knew it had to be mid-enginebecause all the best race cars were.A few mid-engine cars wererunning around the streets toolike the Ford GT40.(engine revving)But nobody else was makinga mid-engine supercarjust for the road.Their first idea was alongitudinal mid-enginethree seat design with thedriver sitting in the center. This was almost 30 yearsbefore a little carcalled the McLaren F1actually made good on that. Then the guys realized the onlything they had to work withwas a massive 3.9 liter V12.If they mounted thatengine in the traditionallongitudinal orientationbehind the driver, the car's wheel base would be too long.So they measured how longtheir V12 actually wasand figured out they couldjust turn it sideways.Dallara, Stanzani, and Wallacehad a mid-engine transversemounted V12 show car chassiscalled the P400 readyfor the 1965 Turin Salon.P400 stood for posteriore four litri. You know what posteriore means?Your butt. That butt naked chassiswithout any skin on itimpressed enough gawkers at the showthat a few placed ordersfor the future carwithout even knowingwhat it would look like.Since the chassis generatedinterest at the Turin show,Lamborghini decided tohave design house, Bertone, work on the car's body aheadof the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. But nobody bothered to checkand see if the engine fit. This engine won't fit inhere without some mods. What, we don't have time for that.Just throw some sandbags inthere and bolt the hood down.Despite not being able to see an engine, the new Lamborghini wasthe star of the showand no wonder.(engine revving)What Gandini came up with wasnot only drop dead gorgeous,it was downright timeless.A pointy shark nose flowed smoothlyinto the sexiest waistlineto come out of the sixties. It was like Sarah Jessica Parker of cars.- Well, obviously I just think it's wrongto make fun of anybody'sphysical appearance.- In a hat tip to FerruccioLamborghini's love of bulls, the doors looked likebullhorns from the front.Yeah, the headlights werefitted from a Fiat 850 Spiderbut they looked better here. When they weren't lit up theylaid flush against the bodyfor a streamlined appearanceand better aerodynamics. What, you get to drive fasterduring the day or what? The eyelashes gave it thatextra little something somethingand I'm not talkingabout those fake lashesyou see on cars today. No, these were au naturel just like mine.I'm like Bambi.Who shot my mom, my friend is a skunk. They called it the Miuraafter the infamously aggressiveSpanish fighting bullsand Lamborghini's buddy whobred them, Don Eduardo Miura. They gave it one ofthe coolest badges everand kicked off atradition of naming modelsafter fighting bulls that continues today. To fit all those mechanicalsunder the sleek clamshell, they crammed the transmissioninto the engine's sump,so they both shared the same oil.The glorious D12 was liftedfrom the previous 400GT modelbut they gave it higher compressionand eked out 350 horsepowers. And the sound of that enginebehind your head, magnifico, and I would know becausemy best friend, Jay Leno, has two of 'em.(engine revving)The production car was lightweightand had way more powerthat the Ferrari 275GTB.That let it sprint to 60miles per hour in six secondsand it cruised to a topspeed of 170 miles permaking it the fastestcar in the (beep) world. It was an immediate successeven though it was fourtimes more expensivethan a Jaguar E-Type.Only 275 were made from 1966 to 1969and the rich and famousquickly snapped them up.Even British fashionmodel, Twiggy, ordered onewith custom orange racingstripes over lime green paint.Did I mention that my bestfriend, Jay Leno, has two of 'em.Because demand was so high, the P400 was rushed to market in 1966.There tires were too skinnyand it didn't handlethe corners that well. The fact that the gas tankwas mounted in the frontand the nose got continually lighteras the fuel level dropped didnot help with that problem, believe me, my best friend,Jay Leno, has two of 'em.But worst of all, they becausenotorious fire hazards.Lamborghini had used Weber carburettorsthat were designed forracing, not the street. When the Miura sat idling at a stop lightor wherever you idle, the space above thethrottles filled up with gasand if it splattered down on the manifold,it would ignite when the carstarted accelerating again.Luckily this didn't doom production, probably because YouTube didn't exist yetand the world didn't have instant accessto videos of Miuras burning to the ground. It's the saddest thing you've ever seen.("In The Arms Of AnAngel" by Sarah McLachlan)♪ In the arms of an Angel ♪(sobbing)♪ Fly away from here ♪(sobbing)The next version of the Miura, the P400 S,was introduced at theTurin Motor Show in 1968.As with most mid-cycle refreshesit got minor updates likechrome trim, power windows, more luggage space, and optional AC, whichI could use right now'cause it's 150 degrees outside. They also gave it 20 more ponies. Why do they say horsepower?I mean, wouldn't they say bull power.("Seinfeld Theme Song" by Jonathan Wolff)Anyway, from 1969 to 1971,they sold 338 P400 S'sto more rich and famouspeople like Eddie Van Halenand Miles Davis, whoapparently crashed hisduring a nose beer binge.- Drugs are bad, okay.- In 1970, engineer anddevelopment driver, Bob Wallace, remember from before, builtone FIA race spec Miura, called the P400 Jota.To be used as a test mulefor future improvement,he pumped up output to 440 bull power.Bull power, trademark, intellectual property of JamesPumphrey and Donut Media.Added front and rear aeroand put on fatter tires. He moved the fuel tanksinto the side sills for better balance, then he put the Miuraon an 800 pound diet, dropping the weight to a mere 1800 poundsby using aluminum bodypanel, plexiglass windows, fixed headlights, lightweight wheels. After beating the crapout of it for a year, dad,it was sold to a local shop andguess what they did with it.Locked it up and waited for itto become worth one billion dollars.Actually a mechanic totally took it outto impress his girlfriendand immediately balled it up,turning it into a car-becue,what else did you expect? In 1971, Lamborghini took whatthey learned from the Jotaand made the biggestimprovements to the Miurawith the P400 SV.They produced only 150 SVmodels, making 385 bull power, through improved cam timing, bigger valves and modified carb. That hurt the fuel economy so muchthat they offered a biggergas tank as an option. The nose was lower, just like Miles Davis, and the rear was raisedslightly to reduce lift.It lost the flirty eyelashesbut got wider rear fendersto fit new nine inch wide rear-wheelsin beefier Perelli Rubber. That was all great but when people heardabout the Jota crash in the news, they wanted a hopped upmodel, not that plain old SV.That would've cost Lamborghini too muchso they made a handful offactory modded P400 SVJ Miurasfor special customers. The Shah of Iran loved his so muchthat he hired an armedguard to watch over it.In 1995, it was sold of toDubai like all supercars are,and then somehow NicholasCage bought it in 1997.He probably sold the Declarationof Independence for it.Other than the racy Jotathat Bob Wallace built in his spare time,Lamborghini commissioned only one otherone off Miura over the years.Bertone built them a lightblue P400 roadster prototypefor the 1968 Brussels Auto Show. The windshield was extra rakedmaking it look lower thanthe already super low coupe, the side vents were bigger, the entire rear end was unique, and they even stiffened the chassisto account for the removal of the roof, but they never actually even made a roofor side windows for it 'causeit was just a show car.(chuckles)in 1969, Lamborghini sold the roadsterto International Lead andZinc Research Corporationwhich provided different kinds of metalsand alloys to car biz.To show of their wears, they zinc and chrome platedthe crap outta the roadster, painted it a very seventies forest greenand renamed it the ZN75.After being sold to different ownersaround the world for thenext several decades, the car landed in New York in 2006where it was restored to it'soriginal baby blue glory. It's the rarest of OG Lamborghinisand is now valued at eightto 10 million dollars. That's like half of whatI make for every episode.Lamborghini only built 764 Miuras. If you ask me it's not nearly enough. They're incredibleand no other car has
