DSLR vs Camcorder (4K vs 1080p) Comparison

A Comparative Analysis: Canon 70D DSLR vs Panasonic VX 870 Camcorder

As we begin this video and audio comparison between the Canon 70D DSLR and the Panasonic VX 870 camcorder, I want to highlight the pros and cons of each device. The Canon 70D DSLR is a popular choice among photographers and videographers due to its ability to change lenses, larger sensor size, which translates to higher image quality, and a range of peripherals and plugins that are more suited for professional or prosumer users. On the other hand, camcorders such as the Panasonic VX 870 offer greater portability, being lighter and thinner, making them ideal for travel and shooting on the go.

The frame rate is another important aspect to consider when comparing these two devices. The video you're watching now is being outputted at 4K, while the Canon 70D DSLR footage is being up-scaled from its original 1080p 30fps setting. Similarly, the Panasonic VX 870 camcorder footage is shot in 4K 25fps. This creates a noticeable difference in resolutions and frame rates between the two devices.

As I'm currently a YouTuber and videographer, I've been using the Camsoda MTD, which has served me well but can be quite heavy to lug around trade shows. Recently, I've been considering upgrading to either a high-end compact camera or a camcorder that can shoot in 4K. The question is, should I go for a device that can shoot in 4K or stick with my trusty Canon 70D DSLR, which arguably has a bigger sensor and therefore better image quality?

When it comes to audio quality, both devices have their limitations. Unfortunately, the audio quality on both cameras is fairly poor, especially compared to some of the higher-end options available. However, I believe that the Panasonic VX 870 camcorder does offer a slight advantage in this regard. According to the specs, the camcorder comes equipped with a 5.1 channel Dolby surround sound microphone, which should provide better audio quality than the Canon 70D DSLR's built-in microphone.

Both devices do come equipped with hot shoes and microphone inputs, making it easy to attach external microphones for improved audio quality. However, I've found that using an external microphone can make a significant difference in video production.

The Panasonic VX 870 camcorder is designed specifically for shooting high-quality videos, making it an ideal choice for videographers who need a dedicated filming device. On the other hand, the Canon 70D DSLR is a versatile camera that can be used for both photography and videography, but may not offer the same level of image quality as a dedicated camcorder.

As we move forward with this comparison, I want to ask your opinions: do you think 4K video production is worth the added cost and complexity? Do you prefer the portability and convenience of a camcorder over the image quality and versatility of a DSLR? Let me know in the comments below.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi guys thank you very much for joining me my name is Tom and I'm the tech chap and this is a video and audio comparison between the Canon 70d DSLR and the panasonic VX 870 camcorder the pros and cons of camcorders versus DSLRs are well-known DSLRs for example you can change the lenses you usually have much bigger sensors which are usually translates to higher image quality and of course you can also have a range of peripherals plugins and generally them a bit more suited to the more professional or prosumer user camcorders whereas a lot more portable the lighter the thinner which is good for going on the road they also often have are able to record in higher frame rates and higher resolutions this video you're watching now is being outputted at 4k however the Canon 70d is just being up scaled it's 1080p 30 footage is being upscale whereas this is being shot it's on the Panasonic at 4k 25 so obviously is a little bit of a difference in the resolutions there's a bit of difference in the frame rate but this is the best I could do really to see the difference between the top-end resolution and frame rate on the Canon and the top-end resolution frame rate on the Panasonic is your hairpin thinking about perhaps top getting a camera if you want fellow youtuber or a vlogger like me then you may be wondering what was the best camera to get if you're working me filming yourself if you get me filming bits of gadgets which I do to all Technology lock screens so I'm always interesting trying to find the highest best image quality for my videos and so until now I've been using the camps MTD been pretty happy with it but it has been a bit of a pain when I've been lugging it around trade shows it's also I found has quite bad muy muy muy with Moyra effects that sort of aliasing banding and get on screams I record a lot of displays being a tech chap so I'm always looking to see what else I can find in terms of cameras and and try to camcorder before I thought about going for a high-end compact camera but the problem with that is they often don't have hot shoes they often don't have microphone inputs and as you guys can hear now the audio quality on both these devices are fairly poor and a little less than earlier I think Panasonic camcorder is quite a lot better it does purport to have a 5.1 Dolby surround sound microphone inbuilt and I think the comparative the Canon DSLR is a bit rubbish either way though I would always have a external mic I usually rode mic Pro so it's important to be able to plug that in so both these do have hot shoes they both do have mic in slots as well which is very useful so you can see the differences between a ZB and 4k as I say this video will be going out to you guys at 4k so even if you don't have a 4k monitor or TV or phone that you're watching this on try and work the quality up the highest you can and you'll get a better impression of the quality difference obviously this isn't a direct 1080p versus ATP comparison I may do one of those in the future but for now this is a sort of test of whether I want to go for a camcorder that can do 4k or I'll stick with a high-end DSLR which can do 1080p but arguably has a bigger sensor and therefore better image quality so obviously try and see here try and find out which does have the better image quality and which one I might stick with as a youtuber so as we check out some of the footage let me know what you guys think in the comments below which you go for whether you think 4k is too well it's too soon lot of people can watch it or whatever you think actually does make a significant improvement of quality and let's get rid of those heavy big DSLR for were youtubing and vlogging and filming and use camcorders which are dedicated filming devices for this sort of job or a hobby so let's check it out and see what you guys thinkhi guys thank you very much for joining me my name is Tom and I'm the
