Canon EOS 90D Unboxing and Initial Impressions!

The Canon EOS 90D: A Camera That Defies Convention

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Canon EOS 90D, and I was blown away by its capabilities. This camera is a bit of an outlier in the world of photography, as it's a DSLR that can act like a mirrorless camera. Normally, mirrorless cameras are the norm for their versatility and ease of use, but not so with the EOS 90D.

The camera's ability to act like a mirrorless camera was one of my favorite features. I grabbed a memory card and popped out the lens, and was able to set everything up quickly and easily from the front of the camera. This feature is exactly what I love about Canon cameras - they're so darn easy to use. As I began to experiment with the camera, I realized that it was capable of doing just about everything I wanted it to do.

One of my first tests was a quick indoor studio test. I grabbed a memory card and popped out the 18-135mm lens, which is a slower lens that's not generally recommended for indoor use. But I didn't let that stop me - I set the camera to ISO 400, zoomed it out as far as possible, and hit record. The resulting image was surprisingly good, with the eye autofocus working well even indoors.

I was also curious to see how the camera's electronic image stabilization (EIS) would perform in 4K. As a crop sensor camera, I knew that EIS would be limited compared to full-frame cameras. But to my surprise, the EOS 90D's EIS did not produce a huge crop in 4K. When I switched to 1080p, I could see just a slight crop, but it was barely noticeable. This is exactly what I love about Canon - they're always pushing the boundaries of what's possible with their cameras.

Next, I decided to test the camera's vlogging capabilities. With the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 lens attached, which doesn't have built-in stabilization, I relied on the camera's electronic image stabilization to keep me steady. I turned on autofocus and set the camera to a neutral picture profile with contrast and sharpness turned down. The resulting footage was smooth and stabilized, even when I was walking around in the sun. And as if that wasn't enough, the camera's autofocus even worked well despite my sunglasses.

One thing I did notice during filming was that the image might be slightly overexposed due to the high screen brightness setting. However, this will likely not pose an issue for most users and is an easy adjustment to make.

Overall, the Canon EOS 90D is a game-changer in the world of photography. Its ease of use, versatility, and performance are truly impressive. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this camera, and whether it will continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with DSLRs. Whether you're a seasoned photographer or just starting out, the Canon EOS 90D is definitely worth considering.

In conclusion, the Canon EOS 90D has exceeded my expectations in every way. Its ability to act like a mirrorless camera, its excellent image quality, and its vlogging capabilities make it an incredibly versatile tool for photographers of all levels. I'm excited to see what this camera can do next, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their photography game.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enKanon very recently updated their old standby workhorse that basically built youtube the ATD and now we've got the 90-day what comes in the box and how does it work let's find out what's up everyone i'm the everyday dead if i can figure it out you can figure it out so I love cameras that just work and I'm so excited for this as many of us I started off watching YouTube with all of the creators using their ad DS so seeing this I'm so excited I'm so excited and look at this thing and before we do open this box I would like to thank my friends over at B&H Photo for loaning me this EOS 90 D for the next couple of weeks to make this series of videos about if you'd like to get your own there will be links in the description below I love this box of what do we got what does it do it's got a thirty two point five megapixel CMOS sensor so this is a new sensor that they created for the new versions of the Canon crop sensors is o4k dual pixel autofocus I detect you I'm just okay let's crack it open something that I've learned throughout my time making youtube videos and that my wife very recently told me is stop talking just open the box just open the box so what do we've got we've got the warranty information because hey something happens to the camera you want to make sure that it's under warranty and you can get it fixed right we've also got a look at that as a big old chunk of literature canon promoting literacy i appreciate that we've also got a battery what is this this is the LP e six in line that is also in my EOS R yes it is the LP e six n so this should be able to charge in the camera a little bit something else that I'd very much like the Canon does and Sony doesn't do even though I do like Sony cameras we got the a 6400 up here but they give you a battery charger look at that look how easy that is it's like I can this cannot cost that much to not include this in every camera box ever this way you have this you don't have to go on Amazon and buy like those cheap third-party things with batteries that may break your camera so Canon I'm gonna give you big props continue to do this continue continue to do this okay you know what's coming up who uses these who uses these traps I mean even though I don't own this camera this will go back I have never used the strap included with the camera I always ask this because it always it's about 5050 with everybody so let me know in the comments below do you use the strap that comes with your camera I I've never used it I just but I love I love hearing a few guys use it what else do we get I did get the kit with the 18 to 135 lens because I do think this is the better option of the kit lenses now it is big and heavy but this is a fantastic piece of glass this feels amazing autofocus manual focus stabilizer does have image stabilization it's got a lock it's got other little mounting points in the bottom image stabilization nano USM sounds fancy EFS 18 to 135 it's got a great focusing ring feels good the zoom action feel smooth let's check out that glass ooh I love I love Canon glass it does now we did check this out when we did the ATD and I don't remember that ad DS kit lens feeling so good like this feels amazing if you don't know what the 90 D is like Canon considers their a to either 90 D so there's like the consumer level right there's their rebels the m50 the SL line of cameras those are all like the consumer level cameras and then you've got their pro level 5 d 4 1 DX stuff like that that's the pro level the 90 days and the 80 DS are like right on the cusp of the high end of the consumer low end of the prosumers but getting kit lenses like this that feels good like that feels phenomenal but we're not here to see the kit lens we're not here to see all this other junk we're here for this bad boy it is a big bad boy because this is a DSLR normally I do mirrorless stuff but this is gonna be a big old camera who would have ever thought that we would have the successor to the wildly popular and still fantastic ATD and that feels amazing I got to give cannon credit where credit is due their camera bodies feel fantastic that feels so good I don't even like DSLRs mirrorless camera mirrorless camera mirrorless mirrorless point shoot kind of mirrorless I don't even like DSLR that much but that feels fantastic you can see the EF mount here we can put the put the old lens on there you go boom that feels good now it is heavy it is a heavy it is a heavy it is a heavy contraption but that darn it that feels good like I I know I've said it over I may sound like a broken record but gotta give Canada I gotta let him know it feels great the body feels fantastic oh I don't really like that that much though the scroll wheel that I remember from the ATD if I remember correctly was more like a sixty mark two-word I don't know maybe it was like this like it's been a little over a year since we use the ATD but I don't this feels a lot like the the s1 the panasonic s1 they're full-frame mirrorless camera oh I don't know that I like that as much I do like that it has a joystick did that man it's Bend I should have I should have gotten my hands on an AED before this but either way I do very much like it it has a joystick I like when cameras have this I wish that USR had that the buttons feel fantastic it's got a video mode what's popping into manual cuz we're fancy we're like almost professionals right we're using a high-end DSLR got to keep it in manual mode we're yet we still got the single card slot unfortunately I mean I don't actually care even when I have cameras that have dual card slots I never use them so but that's like the internet loves to die on that hill so I'll let it I'll let it be I'll call it a negative the battery we've already seen the battery compartment it's got that oh yeah the flip screen that everybody everybody needs it look if you make online content and that's what I make that's where I talk about cameras about the flip screen makes life so much easier I love you yes are ya the buttons feel great everything feels fine has got the flash that I have literally never used in my life so let's talk about the ports so we've got the microphone in the headphone jack so if you want to monitor the audio while you're using this to record and we've got the oh it's got mini HDMI oh I love this so much I can't remember the ATD had it but most of canons like lower end cameras have the micro HDMI micro HDMI is garbage it's one of the worst connections ever I wish cameras would just get rid of it but this has much like the USR there's a nikon z6 back here they have the mini and while i'd prefer full mini could you see that mini is just good like it will let you connect things so that makes me that puts me in a good mood it may sound like a geeky thing getting excited about hdmi ports it's so important ok so what we're gonna do we're gonna charge this battery up for a couple of minutes and we're gonna see because there's a few features in here then I'm very curious if they actually exist or not and then we will do a quick like vlogging test will do a really quick indoor image test just to see how it all looks from just a quick hey well how is it going uh perspective so I'll see in a second ok there we go we've got the battery we only let it charge like 15 minutes because I'm just too excited to get this camera going we can charge it for the bigger videos we'll make later but okay power on flip screen initiated yeah we'll do that later make sure okay oh we can move over to this thing let's get to the menus menu so let's find out what can it actually record in because that's what everybody's gonna care about that's what I care about at least okay I don't okay we've got to have a lens attached before let me do this gotta be fancy cuz we're DSLR we got a mirror and because we got a mirror we got to make sure that uh okay I will do that menu start/stop button okay we're now in Live View mode what do we have for recording capabilities so up nope nope recording capabilities okay movie recording 4k 30 full HD 30 is that light okay let's - oh it's got standard and light okay so it does have a beefier bitrate but you'll notice it is missing 24 frames per second and everything what is that 4k movie cropping what do I want to crop it when using 4k moving crappy temperature become too high of both when shoot becomes too high what so we have to movie cropping I guess I don't understand why we would 4k we disable the 4k cropping but we can still do 4k here that's a weird thing to say and I'm very disappointed that it's again it's missing 24 frames per second now I don't shoot in 24 frames per second I shoot in 30 so I could be perfectly fine using this but it is disappointing and something else I'm not seeing a high frame rate so we've got 30 frames per second alone okay let's go down to Full HD 30 frames per second okay so we can do 1080p at 120 frames per second that's cool but something that I'm not seeing and what the ATD had is you could do the all eye compression in the ATD and I'm not seeing that here I only see IPB so that's another kind of disappointing thing that may keep you in the a DD we can check more of this stuff out later I'm just I wanted to see if it did have 24 frames per second cuz I could have sworn I saw a Twitter post where somebody complained about the lack of 24 and then they said no we do have 24 so eh there you go I don't see 24 there now maybe there's a setting that I'm not seeing to turn on the 24 but why would you hide it then why wouldn't you just put it here in a minute HDMI can we get a clean HDMI out okay you can do clean 4k and clean full HD out that's pretty that's pretty impressive the cell 3 was the first one that I really saw that would do that from a Canon DSLR which is pretty awesome normally that's a mirrorless thing so it's cool that they're letting their DSLRs act more like mirrorless camera so let's turn this off let's grab a memory card and do a very quick indoor studio test about it okay we grabbed a memory card and we grabbed my little tripod because thing's too heavy for me to try to be holding up the whole time my arm I'm not that powerful I'm not that powerful I'm just a weak just a little guy okay let's pop you out let's turn you around 18 to 135 now this is a slower lens so forgive the image quality whatever we end up getting because it zoom lenses especially bad ones they're not generally the things that you want to shoot indoor with but you know whatever we got the camera let's have some fun let's have some fun so where you got to set it to and again look I can just easily set everything right here from infront of the camera which is what you want I love this feature about these kind of cameras okay we'll go to ISO 400 we are zoomed out as far as possible let's go over here and we will hit record so this is the indoor image quality of the Canon 90 D now I can see the eye autofocus is happening right I mean it's working pretty darn well the audio you're still hearing the audio being recorded through the EOS R let's see if there's a big crop in 4k that's the thing that I'm really curious about so record so this is the 4k quality of the 90 D now we did just set this up really quickly it's in auto white balance is in Auto everything we're at ISO 500 F three point five one sixtieth shutter speed because it is a 30 frames per second camera but this is the image quality now what I'm curious about is they're a big crop in 4k so this is 4k let's stop the recording let's turn it over to again I just love being able to do this to full HD standard IPV and no so look that's the exact same now we're in 1080p it's the same framing so it does not have a gigantic crop in 4k that's awesome that is awesome I wish the USR could get like a little bit less of a crop then on this so I'm now really excited to throw this up on the sticks with the 16 to 35 2.8 lens that I've been using for the EOS R we will do that in a future video when we have a little more time the battery's about to die here so before the battery totally dies let's hop outside real quick and do a vlogging test to see how the electronic image stabilization works because I do think the electronic image stabilization on Canon cameras all right see out there whoo and welcome to the vlogging test of the Canon 90 D now I do have this on the EF 16 to 35 2.8 which does not have stabilization built into it so we have the electronic image stabilization built into the lens right now which means it's going to be a little tighter and again this is a crop sensor so 16 to 35 is more like a 24 anyway so this is going to be about as tight as that kit lenses but how is the stabilization doing I find that canons stabilization their electronic stabilization isn't it's not the worst it does much better than like some camera companies like in body image stabilization but we do have the lens set to f4 I have the autofocus turned on which is pretty cool because sometimes it'll like catch my eye even though I've got sunglasses on which is incredible this is on the neutral picture profile with the contrast turned down one sharpness turn down all the way and yeah how's the autofocus do with that Sun look at that there's the Sun right there ah this looks really i really like canon cameras just are some of the easiest things to use and that's one of my very favorite things about them is just whoa how's that rolling shutter will have to do a test on that but I really like Canon cameras just because they're so darn easy to use now this image I'm looking at the screen right now it might be a little overexposed right now I do have the screen brightness turned all the way up so that might be giving me a false sense of the exposure in the image but we'll see you guys know what this looks like I have no idea but leave a comment below what are some things that you would like to see out of the brand new EOS 90d leave that with that comment about the straps whether you guys use them or not thanks for watchingKanon very recently updated their old standby
