The Upcoming Surface Pro: What to Expect
I'd love to see another upgrade on the rumored upcoming Surface Pro, specifically a full-size SD card reader instead of a micro slot. There's got to be enough space down there, and those new 300 megabyte per second cards from Sony would make a great extra storage drive. With this feature, users would have more flexibility and options for expanding their storage capacity.
The Screen on the Surface Pro 4
The screen on the Surface Pro 4 maintains the 2:3 aspect ratio of previous versions, which sacrifices some real estate for widescreen aspect media consumption. However, Microsoft's primary focus is not on this aspect, as the average user wouldn't notice it much. This aspect ratio is great for productivity and reading articles, with full coverage of the sRGB color space and excellent viewing angles. Moreover, out-of-the-box calibration means that it has stood up very well to the test of time.
The Keyboard: A Suede Feel
Microsoft went for a suede feel on the keyboard cover, which in spite of its binder-like edge construction managed to impress me. The keystrokes felt good, with a fairly long travel and a satisfying click. I was able to quickly get up to speed, and this entire review was typed on the Surface Pro 4. The backlight is also a nice touch, as it allows for easy typing in low-light environments.
The Touchpad: A Satisfying Click
The touchpad feels good, with a satisfying audible click. It's understandable that it might be a little small, but it still delivers. I didn't expect the keyboard to be this good, especially after my previous experiences with Surface products. However, I was able to quickly get up to speed and enjoy typing on it.
The Stylus: A Game-Changer
One of the areas where Microsoft really stepped up is with the stylus. The included stylus is one of the best writing experiences available, comparable to putting a pen to paper. It's extremely useful for university students and anyone who wants to take notes or create art. I was able to use it for hours without any issues, and it even inspired me to learn a bit about thermodynamics.
The Thermals: A Surprising Advantage
Despite its super thin size, the Surface Pro 4 is able to keep the i7 processor nice and cool during our eye-to-64 stress test. It stabilizes at around 75 degrees while still turbo boosting to 3 gigahertz. As a bonus, it stays reasonably quiet as well.
Who is this Tablet for?
The tablet with a keyboard concept won't be perfect for everyone. If you never plan to use the pen or full backlight, a normal laptop like the LG Gram or HP Spectre X360 might make more sense. However, if you're willing to compromise on a somewhat dated iO and want something now, today that's great for productivity tasks such as taking notes using Word and surfing the internet at lower prices, it's pretty killer.
TunnelBear: A Leading Privacy Tool
If you're not aware of TunnelBear, well, maybe today is the day you are. It's a super easy-to-use tool that encrypts your connection to websites and services, making it appear as though you're browsing from a different country. All of a sudden, you become "John Doe" from Timbuktu, and that's exactly how you want it to be.
TunnelBear has a leading privacy policy and does not log activities. It offers 500 megabytes of data included and no credit card required for the free version. When you decide to sign up for unlimited data, you can save 10 percent by going to TunnelBear.com/ltt.
