The Challenges of Electric Vehicles in Cold Weather
As we head into the colder months, many of us are wondering how electric vehicles (EVs) will perform in sub-zero temperatures. I'm sure some of my viewers who live in places like Canada can attest that even in relatively cold weather, it's not uncommon to experience temperatures as low as 1-2°C. The impact of cold weather on EV range and efficiency is a well-known issue, with battery efficiency decreasing significantly in colder temperatures. This means that drivers may find themselves facing reduced range or slower charging times when the mercury drops.
For those who own an EV, this can be a significant concern, particularly if you're looking to cover long distances without worrying about running out of charge. As someone who's had the pleasure of driving the new Toyota GR86, I can attest that even in cold and slippery conditions, this car is a hoot to drive. Its rear-wheel-drive layout and lightweight body make it incredibly agile and fun to handle, even on rough roads. However, with only 230 horsepower under the bonnet, it's clear that this car is not designed for high-speed cruising or towing heavy loads.
The GR86's performance in cold weather was put to the test during my short drive last night, and I'm pleased to report that it handled beautifully. Despite the chill in the air, the car felt stable and responsive, even when cornering aggressively. However, I do worry about its range in extremely cold temperatures – 163 miles on a full charge is a decent showing, but it's still shorter than some of its rivals.
Meanwhile, another EV that's caught my eye recently is the Ford GT Mark IV, which marks the final iteration of this iconic track-only car. With its twin-turbo EcoBoost engine producing over 600 horsepower and a bespoke racing transmission, this car is designed to tackle even the most challenging circuits with ease. Its aggressive aerodynamics and long wheelbase also make it look like a beast on the road. With only 67 units planned for production at a staggering $1.7 million each, this car is an absolute dream come true for Ford GT enthusiasts.
However, I must say that I'm a bit jealous of those lucky enough to secure one – they'll have to wait until next year for their chance to take delivery. In the meantime, I'm excited to share my first impressions of the GR86 and explore its capabilities in more depth. As always, be sure to check out the video for a detailed review.
On a separate note, this week's car news is relatively quiet compared to previous weeks, with no new models or announcements. Instead, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share some behind-the-scenes insights into my content creation process. From scriptwriting to filming, there are many challenges that come with creating engaging and informative content for our audience.
As we head into the holiday season, I want to take a moment to reflect on what Christmas means to me. For many of us, it's a time for family, friends, and festive traditions – but it can also be a challenging period financially and emotionally. As someone who's experienced their share of difficulties in recent times, I want to encourage everyone to prioritize self-care and reach out to those around them.
For my audience, I'm excited to announce that I'll be sharing some special content over the holiday break. First up will be a Christmas Day message, where I'll take a moment to reflect on the past year and share some words of encouragement. I'll also be doing an end-of-year review, where I'll dive into my numbers and highlight some of the highlights from 2022.
Finally, I want to thank you all for being part of our community – it means the world to me, and I'm honored to have such a dedicated following. Don't forget to check out our merchandise section, which features exclusive Legacy Legends gear that's perfect for anyone who loves cars or wants to show off their passion.
Thanks for watching, and I'll see you on Friday at 6 pm when I share my first impressions of the BMW X1 – it promises to be a thrilling ride.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enforeign hey guys and welcome to petropet and welcome to this week's midweek 180. in this week I do have a press car which I'll tell you more about um in a little while but yeah lots of planning for next year some really exciting projects that I'm researching for and it's always a case of trying to plan impress cars and events and just manage the schedule certainly for the first quarter of next year but lots and lots of exciting stuff happening and before we start the 180 if you haven't as yet worked out any Christmas presents big shout out for my merch so I'll put a link below for legacy Legends if you're up for any merch I've got some T-shirts and some mugs and some stickers and this new half zip fleece is going down very very well it's really warm in this cold weather and be cool as well so if you do want to get any merch either maybe I don't know send your other half a link or just buy it for yourself but yeah I'll put a link below but let's get cracking with the 180 if you've not seen one of these before this is my midweek update where I bring you my news views and information about upcoming reviews all filmed in one take I'm gonna put 180 seconds in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and that's it a very simple format so without further Ado let's get cracking with this week's midweek 180 I shall start my timer okay leader of the fact last week was Francois RG he's on a roll again people he's on a roll well done mate joined in The Magnificent Seven by Michael Kemba at edc5467 uh Ben higginson Rod Matheson Jake Warren and Paul Mead I hate those YouTube handles but whoever puts the first comment this week you'll be my leaders back next week and the first seven comments will be in my Magnificent Seven where are you and what you're doing well that was Owen McDonald who was in Berlin for the Christmas markets I have to say I do like a good old Christmas Market especially those in Germany because you can get lots of bratwurst and big jugs of beer um so I do like a Christmas Market but wherever you are right now and whatever you're doing put it in the comments below and I'll give you a shout out next week uh last week's question was Tria or tree down as you can see our tree is very much up a few of you hadn't got it up yet that's fine hadn't got your tree up yet um but hopefully it's getting closer and closer to Christmas so I'm sure many of you got it up and for those of you who said you lived on your own or were you know I get a tree up or leaving a little one it might just make you feel a little bit more Christmassy and a bit more cheery at this week's question and it's very cold in the UK at the moment and I know some of my uh viewers that are in places like Canada is not really cold at all but it's certainly um very low um sort of Sub-Zero one two three four degrees below zero and and I wonder if you have an EV are you having issues with your range in the cold weather um because it's certainly a known fact that cold weather affects battery efficiency and and general range of EVS the Mackie long range I've got at the moment is only doing about 163 miles to a full charge and I was talking to someone last night who had a mini electric and on a full charge was struggling to get 95 miles on a full charge it's a big Challenge and I think that's one of those things about going electric that many people are concerned about when it's cold they don't work so well it's pretty quiet on the new car news front this week but I want to talk about this this caught my eye this week so this is the Ford GT mark IV it's the last hurray to the Ford GT um it's basically a track oriented track only for GT it's got a different twin turbo ecoboost engine with more power it's got racing transmission it's got very aggressive race Aero it's a longer wheelbase and I just think it looks awesome unfortunately um you can put your application in they're only making 67 of them as an homage to the lemon win in 1967. they are 1.7 million dollars and client selections will take place back end of q1 to next year 2023 with deliveries middle part next year but I just think is an absolutely awesome awesome looking thing um this week I'm driving the gr 86 from Toyota absolute hoot of a car and Friday's video at six is the BMW X1 you could tell I knew what was running out of time there so yeah um let's just let's just jump back a little bit Toyota gr 86 um I've only had it a day got delivered yesterday so I've only driven it a little bit uh so far all I can say is it's an absolute riot I mean it's very cold and very slippy but it just it just loves to go sideways it's unbelievable it's only got two on Five Section tires at the back I mean that was always the Toyota GT86 is kind of party piece only a couple of hundred horsepower that one uh with very narrow section tires at the back which may gave a little bit of slip bit of um you know um that characteristic well the gr 86 is it's only 230 horsepower there or thereabouts um so yeah I'm gonna enjoy reviewing that I'll probably make that film either tomorrow or which will be Wednesday um or Thursday this week uh but very very cool car and then this Friday at six I said I had uh the BMW X1 the new one um a couple of weeks ago now so that's Friday's video uh but that's it it's a really really quiet I guess it's on the run-up to Christmas quiet car news you know there's obviously no Formula One at the moment so when I was doing the when I was doing the script for uh this week's movie 180 I was like what am I going to talk about I might I might actually um not have enough to talk about I still ran out of time anyway I'm waffling uh guys um I hope you guys are all well and um getting ready for Christmas I know it's very challenging times at the moment here and we're not just in the UK but around the world we've got you know Financial challenges and you know um um cost of living crisis and cost of fuel and cost of electric it's all very difficult times but at the end of the day for me Christmas isn't about material things Christmas is about being with the ones that you love and looking out for people and making a difference by just making someone smile or taking time out to give someone a call and ask if they're okay it doesn't have to be buying someone a present or sending Christmas cards um so hopefully everyone's getting into that spirit and over the Christmas break by the way I will be doing my normal um Christmas Day message on Christmas Day and I will also do an end of year review going through all my numbers and just talking about the highlights of this year which has been a pretty special year to be honest but I'll tell you more about that next week on next week's midweek 180 for now I'm gonna love you and leave you and I hope you're all good and I shall see
