Ai Upscaling On The 2019 Shield TV Is Amazing!

YouTube Video Compression and the New Nvidia Shield Android TVs

Before we get started, I just want to give you a heads up that YouTube video compression isn't that great. If you're viewing this, make sure you're viewing it on a pretty decent screen. This is uploaded in 4k, so that's gonna get my point across more than anything else. But I know it's not gonna be as good as what I'm seeing on my main screen. I hope at least this gets my point across.

The CTA Prime back here again today, I want to check out the new AI upscaling baked into the new Nvidia shield Android TVs. Now, this works with both the lower end shield TV model and the shield TV Pro. The one I have here is the lower end model, which costs $150 and comes with a Tegra x1 plus CPU, 2 gigabytes of RAM, and 8 gigabytes of internal storage. This AI scaling works on both models, so I wanted to use the lower inversion just to show you that it's working.

Keep in mind that this AI upscaling only works with certain apps right now, and those include Netflix, Hulu, and HBO. But hopefully, this will be brought to the whole system later on down the road from within the settings. We can go to AI upscaling as shown here, and I've also enabled demo mode, so we'll just back up and check out some YouTube.

This really can't turn a 480p or 720p video into a real 4k video, but it does an amazing job in this case. Let's go with Big Buck Bunny, which was uploaded 11 years ago - it's a Blender demo, and we'll set the resolution to 720p. I'm going to restart this, actually, would just go right about here. And now, let's pause the video and set it to demo mode so I can move this cursor around to give you an idea of how well this works.

I've got a eye enhancement off, and this is with the eye enhancement on - hopefully, it's coming across as good as it looks on my screen in this YouTube video. Let me just circle a spot here and take a look. So, this brings out the detail, which I mean... it's crazy! It's amazing how they made this work.

So, I'm going to set this to double-screen mode and play with it some more. We'll get to another spot and then do it one more time. Just thinking that this is absolutely amazing that they were able to pull this off with this ARM chip - I don't know what kind of Voodoo they got going here, but it works amazingly well.

This is what the AI enhancement looks like off; it's basic. And this is with the AI enhancement on - you see how it brings out the detail? That's what I'm really hoping to see more of in other apps and video playing services instead of just streaming services.
