They Ruined my Favorite Laptop - ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) Review

**The Asus ROG Zephyrus G16: A Close Look at its Webcam and Display**

This is what the webcam looks like on the G16 again, the quality is very similar to the G14 because Asus is using the same sensor. Uh and the microphone sounds similar as well. You've got three modes directional recording stereo enhanced and 3 CDG recording right now there's an airplane going above the office and I'm not sure if this is going to pick it up or not but the noise cancelling stuff certainly helps so I'm glad that uh it's doing its thing. I did wish if they included a privacy shutter switch kind of like what Lenovo does with their Legion laptops even Razer included a physical privacy switch on their blade laptops so yeah that's something would have been really thoughtful uh for the G16 and the G14 as well but yeah something to take note of Asus.

Asus has managed to pack a lot of ports into this laptop, considering how thin it is. On the right-hand side, you get USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port which doubles as display port 1.4 that's directly linked to the GPU and it also supports 100W PD charging. You also get USB Type-A and a full-size HD card slot which by the way is UHS-2 compliance so that's great news for content creators who need a fast reader. Switching over to the left side, you'll find audio jacks, second USB Type-A port, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, and the new proprietary port.

These displays are indeed top-tier, created with a 16-inch 2.5K OLED panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, which is faster than the G14's 120Hz panel. You still get beautiful color reproduction with ink blacks and excellent color gamut covering up to 100% P3, however, choosing OLED means sacrificing peak SDR brightness performance especially when you compare it to mini LED panels. Our sample averaged around 420 nits which is still pretty good. You also get VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) basically Asus partnered with Samsung and Nvidia to achieve a 960Hz pixel emission rate ensuring a tear-free gaming experience regardless of brightness levels.

I've talked about this in depth in my G14 video if you're interested in learning more, um, you can check that out. But yeah, overall I love gaming on this display.

**Getting Underneath the Hood**

Getting underneath the hood is pretty straightforward though. Keep in mind that there are two silicone covers at the top hiding a few screws so make sure you remove them to access the internal components. Unfortunately, just like the G14, Asus has taken away access to the RAM modules, so what you configure online is what you're going to stick with for the rest of the laptop's lifespan which really sucks. I mean, this is a 16-inch gaming laptop, I mean, I'm sure Asus could have done something to give users set flexibility but yeah, at least you get two M.2 slots. The primary SSD is pretty fast at least on the G16 model we got around 7GB per second on read and 5GB per second on write. The 470 model was pretty decent there's a considerable amount of performance loss compared to the 480 because Asus uses a Samsung PM 91 SSD on the 480 versus WD 560 on the uh 4070 I just thought it was worth mentioning so that's a story with the ROG Zephyrus G16.

**Conclusion**

This laptop has a lot of potential guys, and honestly most of the performance issues can be sorted with a bios update because let's face it you're not just buying into a product solely on looks. You want it to work seamlessly as well when both hardware and software play nice this laptop shines but if they just don't synch up it's a bit of a let-down that being said, I have to give major props to Asus for pushing the boundaries with the G16's display and its League design, I'm totally sold on the idea of OLED gaming, it's pretty awesome. And these laptops are almost as Slim as my 16-inch MacBook Pro. It seemed like the perfect upgrade to me but I reckon I'll hold off until they iron out the performance Kinks.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enall right Rog zephrus g16 where do I start remember what I said earlier this year on CES when these things came out I think I found the best laptop for 2024 seriously uh this is probably going to be one of the best selling laptops period yeah I think Asus needs to work out a lot of things with this laptop in fact I don't think I've ever had this amount of trouble making a laptop review I know a lot of people were looking at this is the perfect alternative to the razor blade 16 and some other thin 16-in gaming laptops but it's not quite there yet first of all let's address pricing in North America Asus is offering three skes the RTX 470 starts at $2,000 featuring Intel's core Ultra 9 185h CPU 16 gigs of RAM 1 T SSD and a stunning 240 HZ Ola display moving up we have the RTX 480 spec which sees a significant price increase to $2,700 I'll be it with 32 GB of RAM included actually I've got two models for or both the models here for this review which would really be interesting uh and then we have the topof the line 490 spec which gets a hefty premium of $3,300 you see it's not like these gpus are anything new physically these models are the same they even come with the same CPU across the board you're just contributing to asus's markups now sure it is cheaper than the blade 16 the legion Pro 7i and a few other high performance competitors but what makes the g16 unique is that combination of Intel's meteor Lake CPU a brand new architecture paired with nvidia's RTX 40 series Graphics because if you look at everyone else they're just playing it safe by opting for the Raptor Lake core i7 or core I9 HX processors so how did it play out with this laptop let's take a look after a quick word from today's video sponsor the new tower 300 definitely a unique looking case with a three-piece panoramic front view made specifically for micro ATX motherboards with insane Hardware support like a 420 mil rad fits on the side of the enclosure with this easily removable fan bracket my four slot GPU fits in no problem with breathing room all around fully dust protected on all sides too the optional LCD screen is super fun and the lay flat mode brings the tower 300 into a whole new universe definitely explore the color options too all linked below okay so first off I do have to mention that the 4080 spec does run at higher power limits due to its Vapor chamber cooling system compared to the 470s standard triple fan setup and lower power levels So in theory it does look like the perfect sweet spot for most people who are looking for a high performance gaming laptop within the 16in space well not so fast because this laptop has some serious and I mean serious issues so let's set the stage regardless of what device or piece of Hardware we test there's always always five runs done on every Benchmark and usually the variance between each run isn't all that much uh maybe 5% at the most but the g16 was just Way Beyond that because take a look at this in Counterstrike 2 there was sometimes a Delta of as much as 30% from one run to the next on the 480 model and the RTX 470 version isn't any better Doom inter internal the same thing actually it's a heck of a lot worse with an almost doubling of the performance in most extreme cases Kalisto shows the problem too and yes every game we tested ended up having serious gaps in performance between runs guys it didn't matter if we restarted the game or rebooted the system or switched power modes or even reset the whole system sometimes the g16 was exactly where we'd Expect While other times it drastically underperformed this isn't a single sample either since both versions that we have here did the same thing over and over and over again and here's real problem the situations caus g16 reviews to fall into polar opposite categories some tests show it being a perfectly good gaming laptop so they probably locked out with a few Benchmark runs While others have it underperforming and blame it on a GPU wattage bottleneck or high temperatures well I can say that it's neither of those because basically from our investigation it basically points out to there being a constant tug-of war between windows power modes and Armory crate while handling Intel new core Ultra processors typically Armory crate should have the ability to override or at least complement the default windows power plants but in this case sometimes Windows wins which causes very low CPU wattage while other times Armory crate gets in the way and everything returns to normal it just felt like two kids were fighting in the schoolyard and neither of them won and if we overlay the CP wattage with gaming performance you can see that there's a direct correlation between how much juice the processor gets and the potential for it to bottl like the graphics card so what happens now well Asus have had months to perfect this and we waited almost 2 months to publish this video hoping things would get ironed out and even though we've had dozens of messages between our lab and their team this is where we're at without a real solution which really is unfortunate and I have to wonder if this will ever get figured out because at this point I'm sure there is Major developments already happening with the Next Generation product designs that are going to be showcased at computex so let's just assume things turn out better in the future and this craziness between Armory crates windows power plants and the Intel meteor L processors just stops now one of the things that I was actually looking forward to with this meteor L core Ultra processors and nvidia's RTX 40 series marriage was a better power efficiency because that was one of the key selling points for Intel and you know what it's a huge win especially when you compare it to the blade 16 packing a much higher wattage core I9 4900 HX into their design so if you're looking for portability and battery life in a gaming laptop then the zephrus g16 has what it takes another interesting thing is how Asus treats their CPU power in an allcore workload in performance and Turbo Modes the ultra 9 is fed with a lot more power than we normally see in thinner gaming laptops also it looks like the 4080 model is actually allowed to push its processor a bit further than the 4070 version due to its Vapor chamber cooling system you can actually see what happens to clock speeds less power means the processor can't hit the same frequencies on the less expensive g16 although temperatures stay about the same on both samples now in terms of acoustic performance I have to say both these laptops are pretty decent uh compared to the competition uh the 4080 is scientifically speaking a little bit quieter compar compared to the 470 but realistically they both sound about the same I will say that sometimes uh the 470 and the 480 actually just exhibit a sort of a high pitch uh noise especially when you set the performance to turbo mode the fans just you know they're spinning at high speeds and that's something that I just couldn't help but notice uh on both these models and the other thing is of course this random sort of whining noise that shows up on both these samples and that actually interferes with the webcam recording test which you'll later see in the video uh it it actually does get annoying so um yeah isus hopefully you can fix this please so when we switch over to real world performance this actually might come as a bit of a surprise because the zeph's ultra 85h might have eight less processor course and a whole 10 less threads than the 4900 HX but it actually wins in some situations against the blade 16 at least when the blades in its balance mode a lot of that has to do with you guessed it power Razer caps their CPU at just 50 WS in balanced and we aren't showing their highest performance turbo mode here since that would naturally make it much more faster than the g16 the interesting thing is the oddness we experienced with the g16s power modes in gaming didn't really translate into janky video explore performance where the CPU and GPU are being used in parallel instead this laptop give us very good overall times even when compared to the blade 16 here which has an RTX 490 now about gaming performance and I love it with you guys okay everyone here had a long debate about how to show the reality of gaming on the g16 it's a mess but at the same time there's a huge amount of potential so in the end we came up with showing an average of 15 that's right 15 run throughs of each game at the g16 native 1600p resolution so the two best and two worst results were eliminated so while these aren't the highest results this laptop can get they aren't the lowest either so it should give us a more balanced approach when showing what overall frame rates will look like and since we're running an average of good and bad results here the g16 ends up in an interesting position of course they're beaten cleanly by our blade 16's RTX 490 but when lined up against other RTX 470 and RTX 480 laptops things are a lot better than you might have expected the zephrus is still competitive though it tends to be in the lower portion of the overall 1% frame rates which tend to be all over the place because of its performance variability I mean sometimes turbo mode ends up with lower frame rates than higher power levels that's also what contributes to some randomly poor averages as well you can actually see this in comparison to the G14 since both laptops are running their GPU at similar wattages but the smaller one is actually able to stay ahead in a lot of instances and that's so disappointing since we know this laptop can offer a whole lot more if Asus fixes whatever is going on with Armory crate the potential is there they just need the willingness to untap it before the next generation of laptops launch later this year now from a physical standpoint the g16 shares the same design language as its younger sibling the G14 the chassis is made out of CNC M aluminum it's 69 in thin which makes it interestingly one of the thinnest 16in gaming laptops on the market it's thinner than the blade 16 and even the legion 7 High I'd say that build quality is solid it's certainly a refreshing change over the previous generations unfortunately the hinge on these models are a bit too wobbly but other than that it feels very similar to the G14 you also get the cool slash bar at the front lid that can be customized with various lighting effects through Armory crate you can also pick this up in Platinum white which unfortunately will set you back another $200 I mean seriously $200 for another color like it doesn't make sense the interior space is roomy with two large front-facing speakers and a standard siiz keyboard I really enjoyed my typing experience Asus makes one of the best switches on the market right now right below the legion laptops my only pet peeve is I just wish they Chang the font style on these kit caps I mean perhaps they can switch it up with the Next Generation to complement the solid design uh you get RGB lighting and a massive trackpad which is also a glass surface and it feels incredible finger navigation is super smooth the buttons feel nice and tactile it's super responsive haven't had any issues so far now if you remember with my G14 review I highlighted how amazing the built-in speakers were the g16 follow suit in that aspect as well thanks to its larger size Asus managed to implement slightly larger drivers leading to an even more immersive audio experience so with six speakers in total it delivers exceptional sound quality surpassing competitors like the blade 16 the legion Pro 7i and arguably anything else that's currently available on the market right now well maybe not MacBook Pro level but it's still very close guys so this is what the webcam looks like on the g16 again the quality is very similar to the G14 because comes with a 240 watt adapter which makes sense considering its power allowance moving on to these displays I'm I mean what can I say they're just top tier you're created with a 16-in 2.5k oler panel per second on right the 470 model was pretty decent there is a considerable amount of performance loss compared to the 480 because Asus uses a Samsung PM 91 SSD on the 480 versus WD 560 on the uh 4070 I just thought it was worth mentioning so that's a story with the RG zephrus g16 this laptop has a lot of potential guys and honestly most of the performance issues can be sorted with a bios update because let's face it you're not just buying into a product solely on looks you want it to work seamlessly as well when both hardware and software play nice this laptop shines but if they just don't syn up it's a bit of a let down that being said I have to give major props to Asus for pushing the boundaries with the g16s display and its League design I'm totally sold on the idea of OLED gaming it's pretty awesome and these laptops are almost as Slim as my 16in MacBook Pro it seemed like the perfect upgrade to me but I reckon I'll hold off until they iron out the performance Kinks on that note thanks so much for watching I hope you're able to take away everything that you needed to know about the g16 I know we're super late to this review but I hope you were able to paint the you know the full picture uh let us know what you guys think if you actually have bought one of these laptops um what has been your experience like comment down below oh and don't forget to spend responsibly\n"
