The Music and Video Hub: A New Way to Access Your Media Library
For all you Zoom HD fans out there, this new feature looks very familiar. This is basically where you access your media library, whether it's music, videos, podcasts, or more. On your phone, you'll have an FM radio just like the Zune HD, but you can also access the Marketplace here to purchase music and video through the service.
Let's click into the Music catalog, and similar to the Zune HD, if you want to jump to a specific artist, you get the same familiar kind of interface. I'll jump right down to the piece, and just like on the Zoom HD, you can click the play button and it'll start playing. All the music that you're going to play on your phone doesn't have to be purchased through the Zune service; it could be MP3s that you purchase through some other servers like Amazon or non-protected tracks you purchased through iTunes or just DVD or CDs that you've ripped yourself. All those file formats will be managed by the Zune software on your PC, which is how you get media on your phone.
As long as it's not protected, we'll take all those files and put them on your phone so you can toggle over here and sort by albums, songs, and playlists. You can bump back out here to see your history very similar to how the Zune HD works today. This is really cool if you want to pick up where you left off; for example, if you took the bus, got off, had to go to work, and then you want to pick up where you left off on the bus when you go home, you can jump right back into it.
This feature is one of my favorites because as a Zune Pass subscriber, I'm probably downloading lots of stuff listening to lots of music. So before I jump on the bus, I know I'm going to download five new albums. But if you have a big collection on your phone, you might not remember exactly what you downloaded. This is a great way to see, like, hey, this is the stuff that most recently got added to my phone.
If you're a podcast listener, it's really cool because every time there's a new episode of your favorite podcast, it'll show up here and just let you know hey go check it out. We can toggle back over here, and this will be where other applications, music and video apps, are surfaced as well. So if you download something like iHeartRadio from Clear Channel or Blast FM, those will actually be listed here within the Music and Video Hub.
Developers have access to these guys, they'll still be the familiar tile interface that we have here in the hub as well. The developer tools are really rich so that people can take advantage of this kind of pivot interface. And they also have the appropriate protocols to make sure that their application shows up on this in this kind of apps view as well.
The background is your last track played, so it'll and all that metadata is brought in as you download music. It's very small, it's compressed but that makes it um, you know Zoom really nice too. So let's go back to the Zune hub again for those who are familiar with it this will be a bit more familiar.
Let's do a video, and we'll see how it works in practice. For example, let's say I want to listen to some music by Akon. As soon as you click on his name, it shows you your albums, songs from him as well, and then you can access his bio information all that stuff is cached when you download this music.
If you pop down here, it will show you other tracks from Akon that are in our marketplace but not on your phone yet. Again if you're a Zune Pass subscriber, you can just press play and start streaming that over the network or download it and add it to your collection on the phone.
Overall, this new feature is going to make accessing your media library a breeze. With its intuitive interface and rich features, you'll be able to access all your favorite music, videos, podcasts, and more with ease. Whether you're a Zune HD fan or just looking for a way to manage your media library on your phone, this is definitely something worth checking out.
