Underrated Reads: A List of Hidden Gems from My Bookshelf
One of the books that stands out to me is like certain people who are part of the elite and they control everything that happens in the world. So, basically what it's not something that I know about a lot because I don't know about politics or anything like that, that just goes right over my head. But this is kind of that idea, where she's part of this community of people who just control everything in the world and she finds out she's finding out all about it, it's just this crazy story you get to go to all different places in the world and it was so cool.
Next up is The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis. This is one that I haven't really heard anything about on BookTube, I found out about this one from work, and when I went to Indigo Home Office and they gave me a copy of it, it was one night that attracted my attention because it has animals all over the cover, and the color of the cover really intrigued me. Also, I love the font, because it looks like it's actually written in silver Sharpie, which is really cool. But then, I ended up reading this book, and I really enjoyed it. It's a very important read, it deals with issues of rape culture and feminism, and it's eye-opening. It's like sad, hard to read, by very eye-opening, and some of the hardest books to read end up being the best books, and this is definitely one of them.
My next pick is What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick. Hunley Fitzpatrick gets a lot more attention for The Boy Next Door or other duology sort of thing, but this one is separate from that. I read this one before the others, and I really enjoyed it. I don't honestly remember what it's about, which is terrible, because sometimes I just read books so quickly that I forget what they're about. But you know that happens; I mean, I have a lot of things in my mind, and I have a terrible memory, so it's whatever. I remember that I really like this one. I know that the main character, oh now I remember the main character; she has a brother who has a disability, and she cares for him firmly, and they live on an island where many people just go for the summer. But she ends up going to the mainland a lot, and there's this guy that she had a fling with on the mainland, and he ends up moving to the island, and it's like John-John does; she has to confront her past and all of that stuff.
Another one that I have is My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jody Meadows, and Bertha Ashton. This book came in one of the Owl Crates, which I forget which one; June or July, I know the month started with J's. It was the one that was royalty, and I had like I'd seen the cover for this book, and it kind of intrigued me just because of the font and everything like that. And the colors on it intrigued me. But I never picked it out for myself; but then, I ended up getting in the Al Crte and around when it first came out, it was getting quite a bit of buzz, like people were saying they really enjoyed it, and I didn't really think it was gonna be something that I would like. But I read it, and I loved it; like it was so funny. It's all about the 9-day queen who is Jane Grey, and basically ruled for nine days before she was beheaded, so it's like a retelling of Diane where it's like at the first part they were like okay, we kinda follow history a bit, and then at the next part they're like, okay now history is going completely out the window. So it was just so cool; I loved how they did it, and I can't wait for the next things that they're gonna come out with because I'm gonna be all over it.
Finally, my last pick is The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye. This is a book that a lot of people have very mixed opinions on, and I think that's why like I had pretty low expectations going into it, because I wasn't really sure how I was gonna feel about it just because the like the opinions were really 50/50. But I ended up reading it, and I really enjoyed it; like it was tons of fun, and it was a really cool fantasy, and it was a cool world to kind of get yourself lost in. So, I ended up really enjoying it, so I don't know, I think it would be a good one to kind of give a go, and see where you fall.
In conclusion, these are all the underrated reads that I wanted to talk about today; let me know what some of the books on your shelf that you think are underrated.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everyone its Haley and today I'm going to be talking about underrated reads so this list is I just kind of went to my bookshelf and I look to know it's like these are the books that I feel like don't get enough love like some of them got love like way back in the day but now people have forgotten about them and I just feel like they should still be getting love it's a very arbitrary list like in your perception you could hear about these books a lot and feel like a lot of people are talking about them but these are just the books that I feel like in my scope of like what I'm seeing people aren't talking about a lot and they should be talking about them more so let's just get into it and just two things quickly before we get started one I did this video about two years ago ish so I will link that down below because I'm not going to be repeating any books from that one so if you want more options for under a Dury underrated reads struggles odds that will be linked down below and number two if I have any reviews for these they will be linked down below as well so now let's actually get into it so first up is the Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray this is the first book a great and terrible beauty this is one that was definitely really popular when it came out because I remember my sisters and my mom reading it but I feel like since then it hasn't gotten the popularity that it really deserves like these books are so great they're Victorian London they're all about witchcraft and like all that stuff I just loved them so much I loved the narrator she's spunky and smart and just amazing and I just these books are fantastic and definitely need to get more loved now just like they did when they first came out next up is a book that you guys are going to say isn't under hooked at all and that is just because if you have been watching my channel for a while I talked about this book quite often but I feel like other people need to be talking about it more as well and that is code name Verity by Elizabeth Wien this book is just so good like everything she writes is amazing it gives you a different perspective on world war 2 because she often writes about pilots which i think is awesome because that's really something that you don't get to see a lot she writes about female pilots specifically so it's kind of women in World War 2 and that whole scope of the war struggle and they are just amazingly heartbreaking reads I have listened to all of her books on audiobook and I love the audio books just because her books do tend to have fairly large chunks of text because they don't really feature a ton of dialogue so it ends up being large chunks of text so I prefer to listen to her books on audiobook and I think that you guys would love them if you give them a chance I hit a box on my bed that's why that noise just happened next up is a book that actually just came out so it's kind of hard to say if it's underhyped or not but I feel like a lot of people weren't really talking about it before its release I haven't heard too much about it since its released so I want to mention in this video and that is you're welcome universe by Whitney Gardner so this book features a deaf main character and she went to a school that was for those who are hard of hearing but she ends up getting kicked out of that school because she has an obsession with graffiti so she ends up getting kicked out having to go to a mainstream school which is really hard for her because she has never had to deal with that she's always had like gone to the school where people around her understand that she can't hear them and they've been able to communicate with her through sign language and things like that so I loved the fact that this had that representation in it it dealt a lot with art which was awesome and it features a narrator who she's very flawed so she's a very realistic girl and I just loved reading about that next up is scythe by Neal Schuester Ben this is one that I heard a lot about like just from working in a bookstore as hearing a lot about it there but I haven't really heard too much about it on booktube which makes me sad because I thought it was awesome like this is a dystopian and it is one of the most unique dystopian that I've read no Schusterman writes amazing dystopian x' they are all just so out there and crazy and this one is all about these two people who they become the size apprentice so basically he is training them to be the next him and like it's a world where there's no more disease so it's the job of the scythe to kill people to keep the population in check so these people are competing to be the scythes apprentice and like become the new sighs it's crazy I love it the whole concept of it was so cool the writing was fantastic and you just need to give it a shot especially if you like to snow peon next up is a book that I actually read a long time ago and that is grave mercy by Robin Lefevers I hardly remember this book but I remember that I really enjoyed it and it has none Assasin's which is like really you need to know so I'm just gonna leave it at that next up is a list of cages by Robin ro I was honestly surprised by how much I loved this book like this is one that I feel like it was getting quite a bit of hype around when it was first coming out but since then I haven't really heard too much about it and I just am really sad about that because it is an amazing story it was so beautiful heartbreaking and just all about friendship and Brotherhood and how that friendship and bravery can overcome anything like it was just so unreal and I absolutely adored it so I really feel like this book should be getting a lot more love than it is getting like in recent times it needs to get the love that it was getting when it first came out next up is walk on earth a stranger by Rae Carson this is a book that I didn't really know what to expect I just knew that I loved this cover like it is beautiful but I ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought it's all about like it's the historical fiction that takes place during the goldrush and it follows a character who can actually sense where the gold is it's just crazy and it follows her journey and I loved it like I thought it was such a great historical fiction an interesting time period to be reading about and it was just awesome next up is the conspiracy of us by Maggie Hall this is once again one where I wasn't really expecting to like it but I ended up really loving it I thought it was so great I loved the concept of it because it's this girl basically finds out that she's a part of this circle that is like it's based on that conspiracy theory where there are like certain people who are part of the elite and they control everything that happens in the world so that is basically what like it's not something that I know about a lot because I don't know about politics or anything like that that just goes right over my head but this is kind of that idea where she's part of this community of people where they just control everything in the world and she finds that out she's
