The New BMW 8 Series: A Sports Car with a Touch of Luxury
The new BMW 8 Series is a very elegant and distinctive car, thanks to its wide grille piercing LED headlights and big air vents behind the wheels. It looks pretty menacing almost shark-like, which might just inspire you to get a little too creative with your driving skills. And if you fancy doing your own impression of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, well, the optional laser lights headlights are right up your alley.
The BMW 8 Series is being marketed as a top-class sports car that will provide a thrilling drive. The question is, will it live up to the hype? BMW knows more than a thing or two about building great sporty cars, and there's a big difference between the models in the eighth series range. The 840 D costs a reasonable £76,000, but if you want the M 850 with its extra 200 horsepower, that'll set you back more than £100,000. And if you're feeling adventurous, the m8 could well cost as much as £130,000.
The 8 Series was unveiled at Le Mans ahead of the 24-hour race, and BMW made no secret of the fact that this new car was developed alongside the M8 GTE Racing car. The company also showcased footage and photos of the car on a racing track, so it's clear that performance is a major priority. But what about comfort? Well, inside the 8 Series is a cross between a luxury limo and a sports car – it's every bit as luxurious built yet leather-clad electric sport seats, and a heads-up display are all standard from launch.
The 8 Series will be available with just two engines to start: a 3.0-liter V6 diesel with 316 horsepower, and a 4.4-liter V8 petrol with 523 horsepower. However, an M8 version is eventually planned for the range, with 600 horsepower. The 8 Series has been designed to be fast and fun to drive, with BMW's latest adaptive suspension that automatically adjusts hundreds of times each second to ensure the car has as much grip as possible. And if you fit the optional anti-roll system, the car's body should barely lean as you fly through the corners at high speed.
One thing worth noting is that the 8 Series may not be the most practical car for everyday driving – it has a couple of rear seats, but they're probably best used as extra storage or folded down to increase boot space. Both diesel and petrol versions of the 8 Series come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and 4-wheel drive, which makes them both very capable on the road.
But what about technology? The 8 Series comes with an impressive amount of it – the personal copilot system uses data from cameras and sensors to predict the car's surroundings and can use the brakes and steering to avoid an accident. There's also an automatic city braking system that can detect cyclists, and an optional parking assistant that will guide the car into a parking space for you if needed.
The 8 Series has some impressive stats – it can go from 0-62 miles per hour in less than five seconds, which makes it as quick as a Porsche 911. And with claimed fuel economy of up to 46 miles per gallon on diesel, it's clear that the 8 Series is designed for efficiency as well as performance.
Overall, the BMW 8 Series is a serious sports car that promises to deliver both thrilling drives and luxurious comfort. With its range of engine options, advanced technology, and attention to detail, it's clear that BMW has put its heart and soul into this new model.
