Creating a Festive Basket from Paper Tubes: A Step-by-Step Guide
Today we'll weave a festive basket from paper tubes, making tubes from newspaper, cutting a folded paper spread into eight parts, and adding a thin line of white glue across the edge. To begin, take your folded paper spread and cut it into eight equal parts. You can use any type of paper you like, but newspaper is a great option because it's readily available and inexpensive.
Next, place three tubes horizontally on top of each other, with their edges aligned. Then, cross them with the other three, creating an "X" shape. This will be the base of your basket. To add additional stability, join two glued tube ends by putting one inside the other. This will create a strong bond between the tubes.
Now it's time to start rolling a tube, starting with a corner. Use a knitting needle to roll the tube into shape, and then remove the needle. You'll need about a couple of dozens of these details for your basket. Place three tubes horizontally on top of each other, crossing them with the other three. This will create a stable base for your basket.
To add additional layers to your basket, start by using one tube from the three weaves it around the verticals, and then continue in the same way. Split the two weaving around each one, securing the weaving glue to the last layer of tubes. Stand up the tubes and tuck the end inside to create a neater shape.
Continue weaving around until you have two completed layers, and then start the third layer by using one tube from the three weaves it around. Continue in the same way, splitting the two weaving around each one and securing the glue to the last layer of tubes. Make longer the twelve stand tubes using glue, and create a frame for the basket walls.
To add additional stability to your basket, wrap the last bottom tube around the next one and turn it upright. Continue this process until you reach the end of the layer, then wrap the last stand around the first one, turning all the tubes upright. Now that your basket is complete, make 10 layers by weaving clockwise like the bottom, keeping the stands upright as you shape the basket.
To add a decorative touch to your basket, stick an additional tube next to each one, tucking it in not too deep and making sure it doesn't stick up onto the front side. Glue the ends of the weaving tubes together to create a neat finish. Then, start braiding by taking a pair of stands and bending it to the right, continuing this process until you complete the round.
When the round is complete, bend the last stand pair outside pressing it under the first curved pair, so that all bent stands should be directed outside. Take a two pair and wind around the next right one, turning it up and completing the layer. Wind the last pair under the first one to shape the basket, taking a tube pair and tucking it into the nearest loop inside the basket.
Continue in the same way, shaping the basket until you're satisfied with its appearance. To secure the handle stands together, use a needle to glue them into one loop and two more into the other. Make the same on the other side by bending the stance to the opposite sides to form an arch, securing it with a peg.
To add some extra flair to your basket, wrap the handle tight from the middle downwards, cutting the ends for three inches off the attachment point. Wrap the stand pairs around crossing the tube between the pairs, gluing and tucking them in place. Now weave another side in the same way, covering the basket with paint.
To prepare the ground for painting, mix white glue with water-based paint and water in equal proportions, adding the color you want to your mixture. Use a flat stiff bristle brush to cover the ground evenly, making sure not to overlap any areas. When the ground is dry, apply two coats of acrylic lacquer to seal it.
To add some extra detail to your basket, touch up the raised parts with pearl-colored paint, taking little amounts onto the brush and carefully applying them in a smooth motion. Add the paint to the handle as well, using the same technique as before. Once the paint is dry, your festive basket from paper tubes is complete.
This beautiful basket can become a lovely gift or decorative piece for any room in your home. With its unique shape and colorful details, it's sure to be a conversation starter.
