Finally MOVING the Track Loader BACK to Salvage Workshop ~ Part 6 ~ 1950s Caterpillar TraxCavator

Rescuing Old Red: A Journey of Restoration and Repair

I've got them all, and they're not all uh destroyed so ready to be torn apart so we can put it back together well ladies and gentlemen i hope you've truly enjoyed the process of getting old red back to the shop fixing it up to the best of my ability out in the backwoods barn and i promise there's more fun awesome projects with old red repairing slash refurbishing the undercarriage here is going to be a big one that's going to be next because i need to be able to drive it and it's not operable you can't push any dirt or do anything it was designed to do the way it sits so that'll be up next another thing is i'm gonna need all the filters all the belts all the fluids i'm gonna do i'm going to fix leaks fix any gaskets that might be bad obviously i'm gonna try and make it as bulletproof as i can and i wanna get it all set up to work for those of you wondering whether or not i'm going to fully restore this machine the answer is no that does not mean i'm not going to get it working really well the plan is to do a working restoration get all of the components as fixed as i can working well so that when the machine needs to be out operating doing a task pushing dirt digging taking trees down whatever it might be i'm not worried that i'm gonna constantly have a breakdown and need to go fix something i just personally don't want to spend the time or the money that it would take to fully restore the machine back to new condition when in reality you know i'm not looking for that i don't want that i'm not concerned about that i want the machine to do what it was built to do so i can use it for projects that's why i got it that's why we're we're rescuing it and putting it back to work and like i said before the fact that this machine came with so many parts is what truly made it a viable option for me to do this just because i have the parts machine doesn't mean that there aren't things that i need to replace such as hydraulic hoses yes they are all old and right now i'm going to use what i have i would really like to find either the dyes or an old hydraulic crimper hydraulic press so that i could make my own hoses so if you know of one that's available i would definitely be interested in looking for one because i'd like to either find one that's in pretty rough condition that needs restoration do that as a project or find one or build one or something to that effect because i think it'd be cool to have i don't intend on this being the last old machine that i ever do and so if i could just have that set up here and all i have to do is buy the hose and the fittings i could put that stuff together myself especially when i have a breakdown and i need that hose right now and i don't want to have to wait a day or two or or go drive spend half a day um getting that hose mate i want to put all new hoses on this machine but for now we're going to go with what i've got use the extras as something below

I would truly like to thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart thank you for watching salvage workshop thank you for the growth that you've given the channel the ability to do some of these projects that otherwise would have been you know unattainable and so you know 100 000 subscribers there's so much more to come i have so many other projects that i want to do i don't have enough time to do all the projects that i want to do i mean it's just it's just a huge huge list but well as with everything you eat an elephant one bite at a time you just do what's right in front of you keep moving through it work towards a goal and that's how i work and many times i get sidetracked onto something else and you know at the end of the day i'm fine with that like i said old red's gonna need new filters new belts new rollers new gaskets all kinds of stuff like that all the fluids that need to be done i need to flush the coolant system et cetera et cetera et cetera so i'll bring you along very early on in the youtube channel i made a promise the promise was that no matter what project i do i promise that i will make it interesting i will make it awesome to watch fun to watch i truly do read your comments when you have suggestions and so thank you for all of that thank you for tuning in to salvage workshop there's lots and lots more to come you guys have a great one and i will catch you guys on the next project

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh baby the whole thing came that way and loosened up the track pretty good i brought my basically porta presses i've got an old caterpillar branded one which is actually made by inner pack and this is my old school blackhawk blackhawk jack and the kit that i have for it so i've got this is most of the cat i've got a couple different inner pack cylinders a couple different spreaders so you attach this to the hydraulics you'd pump that hand pump and it would split apart whatever you were trying to move it's like a half ton and then that one's a one ton and then all these are different attachments that can be adjusted and used in different ways to pull things apart push things together press stuff in on top of that all of these bars go with it and they have they can all not those but these ones here they can connect to one another and then there's pins that you can put into them so that you can attach the different pieces plus on the end of one of these is where all the attachments screw onto these uh pipe threads and so then you would you would put this in the press and then allow you to get into tighter longer shorter awkward places that you couldn't otherwise get to uh in other ways so i found the best thing to use when using the track as a as a workbench is a towel just get a rag towel or something keep stuff from falling down between the tracks you can get all organized the short-term plan here is to do exactly basically what they did they had this here and then they had it clamped with you know some like a fence clamp and a pipe clamp you know i've got another muffler clamp here too so i'm going to do the same thing for now because i want this tight enough to roll and turn and not throw the track off too uh too easily so the this screw here basically the way it works you've got this big wrench that you put a pipe on you take it put it on this nut and you would turn it up or down and it would go in or out which would push this idler wheel out tightening the track and so i don't know if that nut and screw are stripped i don't know if they're all the way extended as far as they go at this point it doesn't really matter right now i need to tighten up the track to move it i probably shouldn't have messed with it but here we are plan is to use this hydraulic ram to push this part of the i think this is called the yoke on the idler that way and so by pushing it that way we can open up some room over here to be able to fit i actually cut a longer piece of tube so i can try and tighten the track up rather than just put in what was there so i'll put this piece of tube in there on the top and one on the bottom and then we will clamp it in exactly how they had done and go from there and then i plan on figuring out what's going on with this once we get it back to the property and we'll go from there so so that ram only has a short throw it can only can only extend out so far so so in order to deal with that these old pipes still don't fit so i'm going to basically cut slight bit off fit them in there and then clamp them in release the tension on this fit in some other pieces of metal so that then i can push it a little bit further all right so now we can loosen this up and we won't have lost much of our work so as you can see we're opening that gap up a little bit more there that'll fit so i'm adding these old pipes in there as just additional spacers so i can really crank down on these clamps and make sure that they're tight all right well there's my redneck rig well we'll see how that does we're going to undo the hydraulic ram here and start it up take it for a drive so on this spacer job i had to end up uh making it wider because once i moved the machine it literally allowed a little more track tension to uh a little more slack in the chain because the teeth weren't down or the the link of the chain wasn't down in the groove of the tooth on the sprocket so i was able to redo it this pipe here is actually the one that i originally put in but i got about another half inch of space extended that way and i ended up using another new uh muffler clamp here and so i basically got another half inch it's better now it basically will on some of the teeth on this chain it will grab and actually engage long enough to either turn or um or break slightly and so it's definitely able to be rolled out of here now we can definitely get it uh get ready to start moving it can't wait to get this thing back to the to the property so whenever this bucket and loader arm were put here the this tree was small and it literally grew this way and then up and out to survive here's a better look at it you can see the tree stump is right here and literally kind of grew into the bucket or around the bucket and then up and out sorry little tree you gotta go hey for those of you that may not have realized this is right inside the barn next to the cat where it was sitting and i pretty much took over so i've got like fluids over here garbage can bunch more fluids behind there we've got different cans of fluids different toolkits some general tools you know just miscellaneous stuff that i brought from the shop from my shop here so that i can work on this machine and and then every night this this roof up here is pretty well full of holes and leaks pretty bad and you can see a pretty big hole right there and so every night i've been covering it with this green tarp to keep water off everything but so it's been fun i definitely enjoyed doing the project here at their property and i appreciate their gracious you know letting me work out of this barn and use their their area but i am excited to get back to the to the shop so we can have all my tools and materials and stuff right at my fingertips so but man there's nothing like an experience i've been working out of an old barn turkey okay so so uh so hmm so oh hi guys what do you think of the old cat huh let's go so for those of you that don't know i have six wineriners come on guys whoa and in a lot of my projects they hang out and chill out here in the shop with me they're a a crazy bunch but so far they've all taken a pretty good liking to the old cat ladies and gentlemen we got old bread here safely so i know i told you i was gonna have this drive through the woods and this through the creek and once i got the track basically tightened up i still didn't have perfect turning ability and so i really didn't want to break down in the middle of the woods so i brought it back to the shop here where i'm gonna pull this whole track off we're gonna replace the parts that need to get fixed the drive sprocket the rollers you know fix the tensioning if if i can find the right parts i need to do the upper rollers those are both bad i have one good one i need to find a second one and maybe some other parts to hold it on but the plan is to get it all working and operational here in the next uh couple of weeks and the plan will be then it will be to take it down the long path through the woods to the to the lower barn where it's going to stay so the machines here i've got a piece of angle iron right here holding this up because one of the first things we're going to do is pull the belly pan off and i'm going to power wash the whole machine get it clean kind of find out where some of the leaks are coming from it does have some additional leaks there's a head gasket leak on the actual diesel motor fingers crossed i can just tighten up the head and it will uh go away more than likely that's not going to be the case the pony motor's got a couple of small little leaks of oil that needs a new gasket and then you know it's going to be dealing with other things like seats and other miscellaneous bolt-on type stuff but the plan is once the track is operational and this thing moves and drives we're going to take it down in the woods we're going to build a road we're gonna push some trees over we're gonna probably drive over a car you know i mean the normal things right and i'll show you a quick little bit of the additional parts that i have here so so right here we have some of the pins for the bucket some of these outer side plates that go right here on the on the front yoke these are some of the brake pedal parts so the parts machine definitely probably had was a low hour machine because see how much tread you can see on these pedals you can still see the lines now if i go up here and i show you these are the pedals in the machine barely see the lines on that side and on that side barely on the corners this machine has definitely been worked hard in its life that also explains why so many of the parts machine parts are better than the machine that we're fixing because more than likely it was a low hour machine i don't know why it stopped working but you know doesn't really matter so these are the upper roller guides that i have in addition to what's on the machine they are not in great shape this is the one good upper roller that i have that i believe you have to press in a cap on this to be able to screw it onto i don't know i'm going to have to look into the parts figure out what parts i need to mount this roller but i'm going to need another one because both the ones on the machine are bad and don't work right it's additional the longer clutch levers and the and the steering levers some of the floor plates this is a steering clutch the entire steering clutch so and this is a brake band so when you push the pedal down what happens is these there's a linkage that grabs on to these two things and it pulls it tighter and it tightens around this this drum here and so what you're really doing when you push the pedal is you're squeezing these brake pads there's there's replaceable faces basically on these that squeeze this drum stopping that side from from uh turning and then so there's basically one side here one side here and then this is where the clutch linkage will move these in and out to be able to disengage that side from the actual drivetrain and this whole unit is complete from what i know and it is in very good condition from the research that i've done so i've got it strapped to this cart all tight together so i can keep it nice and and ready to use and obviously we got the the main drive sprocket there that we need to replace which is awesome and then these four lift cylinders all four lift cylinders for the hydraulic arm in the bucket we got the additional hydraulic pump to repair i don't know if i showed you but this is where the hydraulic hose blew right here basically blew out right in that spot some of the other additional plates a generator we've got some starters some of the other electronic pieces these are all the extra hoses and i know they're probably not good and they shouldn't be used but i mean they are extras for in a pinch all the additional hardware that i couldn't really determine what it was or where exactly it went so i just threw it in that bucket these are additional pieces of like the final drive the final drive goes on either side of the drive sprockets and lubricates and meshes everything together more final drive parts all through here i don't know what this part is so i don't even know if it goes to the machine it was with all the machine stuff if you know what this part is let me know i it's broken the casting is broken right there and then it seems like there's a break up here as well so if you know what this is let me know what part it is it looks like it's got a 8f 8f3337 not even sure if it goes to the cat and then i believe this is an oil cooler correct me if i'm wrong and it was with all the cat parts too i don't know if it goes on the 955 i haven't seen one with an oil cooler and i don't know where it would go but i mean at the end of the day if i could find i gotta find another fan for this side but it would be a great addition to have i mean it wouldn't hurt anything assuming it doesn't leak so we got a lot of the other tubes and and knobs and got an extra gas cap there this is the fan for the the radiator those are pieces of the yoke for the front idler hydraulic filter assembly these are all the extra rollers that i have and then here we have one of the tracks this is the better track and the better idler wheel so that's the plan is to potentially put this track on with that new sprocket we'll see i'm going to evaluate all that once we get a little further into this but this is the other thing that i am not quite sure what it goes to it's a twin disc clutch and hydraulics it's a model c 106 sp5 and then there's a two spec 168 so i don't know what this goes to or how this works obviously this is a pulley of some kind and you know there's a clutch or something would have been in there so does this go to the cat or is this for something else let me know if you have any idea exactly what this is and what it's for a bunch of the other parts are already down at the lower barn and it's stuff that i don't really need right now so as i go about fixing some of the stuff on the machine all the extra parts that i do not need will also be stored inside in a in a container or in a in a barn so that they're out of the weather so that you know when i do need them i've got them and they're not all uh destroyed so ready to be torn apart so we can put it back together well ladies and gentlemen i hope you've truly enjoyed the process of getting old red back to the shop fixing it up to the best of my ability out in the backwoods barn and i promise there's more fun awesome projects with old red repairing slash refurbishing the undercarriage here is going to be a big one that's going to be next because i need to be able to drive it and it's not operable you can't push any dirt or do anything it was designed to do the way it sits so that'll be up next another thing is i'm gonna need all the filters all the belts all the fluids i'm gonna do i'm going to fix leaks fix any gaskets that might be bad obviously i'm gonna try and make it as bulletproof as i can and i wanna get it all set up to work for those of you wondering whether or not i'm going to fully restore this machine the answer is no that does not mean i'm not going to get it working really well the plan is to do a working restoration get all of the components as fixed as i can working well so that when the machine needs to be out operating doing a task pushing dirt digging taking trees down whatever it might be i'm not worried that i'm gonna constantly have a breakdown and need to go fix something i just personally don't want to spend the time or the money that it would take to fully restore the machine back to new condition when in reality you know i'm not looking for that i don't want that i'm not concerned about that i want the machine to do what it was built to do so i can use it for projects that's why i got it that's why we're we're rescuing it and putting it back to work and like i said before the fact that this machine came with so many parts is what truly made it a viable option for me to do this just because i have the parts machine doesn't mean that there aren't things that i need to replace such as hydraulic hoses yes they are all old and right now i'm going to use what i have i would really like to find either the dyes or an old hydraulic crimper hydraulic press so that i could make my own hoses so if you know of one that's available i would definitely be interested in looking for one because i'd like to either find one that's in pretty rough condition that needs restoration do that as a project or find one or build one or something to that effect because i think it'd be cool to have i don't intend on this being the last old machine that i ever do and so if i could just have that set up here and all i have to do is buy the hose and the fittings i could put that stuff together myself especially when i have a breakdown and i need that hose right now and i don't want to have to wait a day or two or or go drive spend half a day um getting that hose mate i want to put all new hoses on this machine but for now we're going to go with what i've got use the extras as something below i would truly like to thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart thank you for watching salvage workshop thank you for the growth that you've given the channel the ability to do some of these projects that otherwise would have been you know unattainable and so you know 100 000 subscribers there's so much more to come i have so many other projects that i want to do i don't have enough time to do all the projects that i want to do i mean it's just it's just a huge huge list but well as with everything you eat an elephant one bite at a time you just do what's right in front of you keep moving through it work towards a goal and that's how i work and many times i get 80d sidetracked onto something else and you know at the end of the day i'm fine with that like i said old red's gonna need new filters new belts new rollers new gaskets all kinds of stuff like that all the fluids that need to be done i need to flush the coolant system et cetera et cetera et cetera so i'll bring you along very early on in the youtube channel i made a promise the promise was that no matter what project i do i promise that i will make it interesting i will make it awesome to watch fun to watch i truly do read your comments when you have suggestions and so thank you for all of that thank you for tuning in to salvage workshop there's lots and lots more to come you guys have a great one and i will catch you guys on the next project you\n"
