DIY Lobster Costume - Throwback Thursday - HGTV Handmade

**Creating a Lobster Costume for Halloween**

To create a realistic lobster costume, one can start by cutting off the top edge of a plastic plate to use as the chest plate for the back of the lobster. The flat edge of the plate will serve as a base for the costume. To secure the edge, red tape is used to prevent it from being rough and cutting skin.

The next step involves creating the tail section of the costume. This requires six plates that are stacked in a stair-like fashion. Each plate is secured with packing tape to create a sturdy structure. The plates are then taped together to form the shape of the lobster's tail. To add extra stability, regular plates are used and zigzagged in half to create the sides of the tail. These are also secured with tape.

The front section of the costume requires five plates that are stacked in a similar manner as the tail. The plates are then taped together to form the shape of the lobster's head. To add extra security, red tape is used to hold the structure in place. The front and back sections are then attached to each other using tape.

To complete the costume, three plastic cups are used to create the legs of the lobster. Each cup is secured with a circle of tape to form a stable base. The cups are then taped together to create the shape of the legs. To add extra stability, regular plates are used and zigzagged in half to create the sides of the legs.

The final touch is adding a red sweatshirt and red sweatpants to complete the costume. A headband with wire and red tape is also required to secure the lobster's claws to the wearer's hands. The result is a simple yet effective lobster costume that will make the wearer stand out at any Halloween party.

**Adding Claws to the Costume**

To add an extra layer of realism to the costume, claw-shaped cards are created using cardboard and felt. A circle is cut out of the cardboard to form the base of the claw, and two pie shapes are punched out to create the tips of the claws. Holes are then punched through the center of each claw, allowing string to be tied through.

The claws are then secured with red tape around the edges to prevent them from slipping off the wearer's hands. The result is a realistic-looking lobster claw that adds an extra layer of detail to the costume. The final touch is tying the strings through the holes and securing the claws in place using the headband.

**Putting it all Together**

The finished lobster costume requires several key components, including the chest plate, tail section, front section, legs, and claws. Each component is secured with tape or string to hold the costume together. The result is a simple yet effective costume that will make the wearer stand out at any Halloween party.

To put it all together, simply follow the steps outlined in the transcription. With patience and attention to detail, anyone can create a realistic-looking lobster costume using plastic plates, cups, and tape.

make sure they're all taped like we have here and secure so these are held with the straight strips and on the other side they're with the circles of the tape with the circles of the tape then what we do is we get the little red tape and just uh secure it a little bit more so this is the back now for the front we do the same thing except we use the five plates stair stack them tape them tape them with the red plate and the red tape and then we also do the back and then what we're going to do is make the legs out of three cups you make the little circle tape and you stick it right here on the edge now with the next cup you lay it in and just kind of secure it and then you put the next piece of tape in here as well so they kind of Bend oh sort of an angle yeah yeah like this uhhuh and you run the little tape along the side and then when you're putting them you attach them to the back the front plate you put the tape inside M and then tape it to the plate and then you take how your mind works to come up with this and then you tape the back and just one more piece of tape and you tape the front well you need to make six legs I was going to say you have to do it five more times exactly you run three on one side and three on the other and this is what it turns out like this is the front we put the ribbon in at the top through the holes that you have on each side look that goes obviously over the shoulders then well then that's what's what's what are these little things well what's a lobster without claws not a lobster I guess yeah this is the cardboard felt red and what we do is we make a circle out of it and then we cut two pie shapes out and then we punch two holes that string is going to go through and then what we do is we kind of like just pinch it up like this so it kind of makes like a a cup shape M and then if I could get you to hold that what we do and I should remind everybody of course that I know you could listen fast but you still wouldn't get it all it's on the website all these directions we we just run the tape red tape over the top and then around the back it ends up looking like this we have it taped inside we put the little string through Tada goes right over the child's hand like that you to down oh oh oh okay and they still have their hands free so they can use them for Ora trick or treating and you need to have a red sweatshirt and red sweatpants for them to where as their base cuz it just finishes it off then a headband with some wire and red tape you're done and somebody will see this humongous Lobster coming down the street
