**Contemporary Books that I Love: A Personal Recommendation**
I'm going to share with you my list of favorite contemporary books, and why they're so special to me. This list is not just about the books themselves, but also about the experiences and emotions they evoke. I want to dive into each book and explore what makes them so memorable and impactful.
**The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky**
My first favorite contemporary book is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. This book follows the story of Charlie, a quiet and reserved high school student who struggles to navigate his relationships with others. He's gone through a lot in his life, which has made him more introverted than his peers. However, he eventually finds a group of friends who accept him for who he is, and this book explores their relationship with each other and themselves. What I love about this book is its unique format - it's written in letters that Charlie writes to an anonymous friend. This format allows the reader to experience Charlie's thoughts and feelings firsthand. The Perks of Being a Wallflower deals with difficult topics like mental illness, abuse, and identity, but it does so in a way that's both thought-provoking and accessible.
Reading this book in my freshman year of high school was a game-changer for me. I was going through many of the same struggles as Charlie, and this book validated my feelings in a way that nothing else had. It's no wonder that it's stuck with me all these years later. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story about self-discovery, friendship, and the power of human connection. If you're looking for a contemporary book that will make you laugh and cry, this is an excellent choice.
**The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli**
Another favorite contemporary book of mine is The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. This book follows the story of Molly, a 15-year-old girl who has had 26 crushes to date - but she's never been in a relationship. She's afraid to take a chance on love, fearing that it might not work out. What I love about this book is its relatable protagonist - Molly is a lovable and quirky character who will resonate with anyone who's ever felt like they don't quite fit in. The Upside of Unrequited also deals with some heavy topics, including anxiety and identity, but Albertalli tackles them with sensitivity and humor.
One of the things that impressed me most about this book was its representation. Molly lives with her twin sister, younger brother, and two moms - it's a loving and inclusive portrayal of a Jewish family. There are also characters of color in the story, which adds to the diversity and richness of the narrative. Becky Albertalli's writing style is fantastic - she can make you laugh on one page and then bring you to tears on the next. The Upside of Unrequited is a joy to read, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relatable contemporary novel.
**Why These Books Stand Out**
What sets these books apart from others in the contemporary genre? For me, it's their ability to evoke strong emotions and create lasting connections with readers. Whether it's the heartbreak of The Upside of Unrequited or the sense of validation I felt reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, these books have had a profound impact on my life.
These books are also memorable because they tackle difficult topics in a way that feels authentic and accessible. They're not afraid to confront tough subjects like mental illness, identity, and relationships - but they do so with sensitivity and humor. As someone who values representation and diversity, I'm particularly drawn to books that feature diverse characters and experiences.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey guys it's Hannah and today I'm going to be recommending to you all my favorite yaa contemporaries since summer is fast approaching I decided that this was the perfect time for me to share some of my favorite white contemporaries with you all because I know that a lot of people myself included really like to read contemporaries in the spring and summer time and even though this isn't a genre that I tend to reach for very often lately I've been really really in the mood for it and I've read some fantastic ones so I thought this would be a good time to finally put all of my favorites together and share them with you all this list will never be fully complete because there will always be contemporaries that I haven't read and many more that I want to read but as of right now out of all the contemporaries I've ever read these are my eight favorites and without any further ado let's just get into them the first book I have to recommend is why we broke up by Daniel handler some of you may recognize Daniel handlers name because he is also known as Lemony Snicket aka the author of these series of unfortunate events books so after I read a series of unfortunate events I wanted to read some more books by him and I found out that he had this one as well and so I decided to pick it up and I'm very very glad that I did why we broke up follows the story of this girl who has recently just gone through a breakup and essentially we follow the plot in a very very cool format as the title suggests it's a story about why these two broke up so we know from the very beginning that they have broken up but then we get to go back and see how they got together and then what led to their breakup and the way that that narrative plays out is that there are a bunch of different items that the main character has left in this box which she gives to the boy that she broke up with and each item in the box has a story behind it so we get to see the story behind each of those items and how that item was significant to their relationship the book is also actually beautifully illustrated there are a bunch of different like pictures and things in here of the different items that are in the box that she's talking about or the different things that are related to the memories but the book really shows you how meaningful some items can be to you at a certain time of your life even if they seem completely meaningless to somebody else and it also explores the way that we attach these memories to these things and then to the people that we associate them with I had a fantastic time reading this book I really just loved the way that the story was developed and I highly highly recommend it if you're looking for a contemporary that doesn't necessarily have the happiest ending that will really get you thinking the next book my list is a very popular favorite but I also love it very dearly and that is fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Jen girl follows the story of this girl named cath in her freshman year at university cath is very much an introvert and she keeps to herself and she is a huge lover of fan fiction that she writes and she's actually very famous for on the Internet she also deals with anxiety and that's another thing that kind of keeps her from going out into social situations in college and something that is kind of challenging for her to deal with but I absolutely loved this book I thought that it was just such a heartwarming story and it really just follows this one girl's life as she's trying to just deal with life this book was just so relevant to me at the time that I read it because I just recently started college and I was kind of lost in a lot of the ways that Kath is lost like I said she also deals with anxiety which is something that I also deal with so I could relate to her on that level and it was great to see that represented in here but just in general this story is just so warm and comforting and so much fun to read I think this book is truly perfect for anyone who just really wants a nice contemporary but especially for people who are already book lovers Kathir self is a book lover and as the title suggests she is a fangirl which a lot of us book lovers tend to be so this book to me just felt really comforting in that sense because I felt like Kass understood me and I just felt at home with it I think it was the perfect book to just put a smile on your face the next book on my list is one of the most recent books I've actually finished and that is the hate you give by Angie Thomas the hate you give follows the story of this girl named Starr Carter who witnesses a police officer murder her friend it's inspired by the black lives matter movement and it has a very relevant political context to it Starr lives in the neighborhood garden Heights which is a predominantly black and poor neighborhood but she goes to a private school in a wealthy neighborhood where most of the kids who go to her school are white and she's one of the only black kids in her school so she's very ostracized in that sense the whole story revolves around Starr trying to understand the situation that she's in in terms of her own identity and also trying to understand what to do when you witness your best friend being murdered because of his race so obviously this book deals with a lot of very heavy topics but it deals with them so eloquently discusses race and class and police brutality and the justice system and the flaws in all of these things this is just such an important read that I think anyone who reads it will get something out of it no matter how much you think you might know about any of the topics that are discussed in here I still think that you will get something out of reading this book I truly believe that this is one of the most important books that is currently out right now the message is just so impactful and so relevant to the times that we're living in and it truly makes me so happy to see that something like this exists and it's so popular right now it's been like number one in The New York Times bestsellers list for weeks and it absolutely deserves that spot but it's truly just raw and honest and real and that's all I could really ask for out of a contemporary that's like my favorite thing to have in a contemporary because it's supposed to be realistic and that's all I want and this one definitely delivers so clearly I highly highly recommend this book if you have not read it yet please pick it up I promise you will not be disappointed it's fantastic the writing is so good the characters are great and the story will just leave you sobbing but also leave you with an immense amount of hope the next two books on my list are both by the same author and they're probably the ones that you've been expecting this whole video because I always talk about this author and that is Benjamin Alire age fans essentially any of his books I highly highly recommend his Wyatt contemporaries are absolute perfection starting with Aristotle and Dante since this was the first one of his books that I read this follows the story of these two boys named Aristotle and Dante who live in El Paso Texas in the 80s the two of them are kind of loners but one day they meet and they become fast friends and the story follows mostly Ahri's relationship as he grows and develops because it starts from when he's fifteen I believe and I think it ends when he is seventeen and then it also follows the development of his relationship with Dante the story is about love it's about friendship it's about sexuality it's about family and discovering who you are and where you fit in in the world and it is truly one of the greatest books I have ever ever read I genuinely cannot recommend this book enough because it had such a profound impact on me when I read it because it was so unlike anything else I'd ever read in why a contemporary and it just shattered the entire perception that I had of the genre and it made me want to pick up so many more contemporaries and I'm so grateful to it for that similarly to the hate you give I also think that this is an extremely important book with an extremely significant message that is so important today I want so many people to read this book because I just think that it would have such a profound impact on the world if more people read it and it just makes me so so happy and then the inexplicable logic of my life is his other why a contemporary that I've read and also loved just as much as Arian Dante this book follows the story of this boy named Sal who was adopted by his single gay father into a Mexican American family Sal is in his senior year of high school with his best friend Sam and his other friend Fido and once again the themes that are explored in here are very similar to that of Aristotle and Dante but they're a little bit different this one focuses heavily on family and how family is really defined being adopted that something that Sal deals with constantly and it's something that's always on his mind and he grows and develops throughout this book trying to come to terms with that one of my absolute favorite things about these books are that they have fantastic familial relationships the parents in these books are so kind and loving and supporting and it's just beautiful to read about that and every time I think about either of these books they just warm my heart and they make me so so happy so I cannot again recommend them enough because they're just so fantastic if I were to pick an all-time favorite contemporary it would probably be either this one or Aristotle and Dante so out of all the books on this list if you don't pick up anything else I highly highly suggest that you pick up at least one of these two because I promise you they will not disappoint the next book on my list is another one of my absolute favorite contemporaries and that is the Sun is also a star by Nicola youn this book Falls the story of Natasha and Daniel Natasha is a Jamaican American immigrant and her family is about to be deported to Jamaica and she's trying to do everything in her power to prevent that from happening and then Daniel is korean-american and he's trying to live up to his parents expectations the two of them end up meeting one day and they instantly feel a connection and the whole story follows their relationship throughout the span of this one day as they just kind of explore New York together it's again truly one of the most beautiful books that I've ever read partially because of the way it is written the format of this book is extremely unique there are parts of the story that are told from Natasha's perspective and then parts that are told from Daniels perspective and then in between that there are other parts that are sometimes told from random characters that we meet who are just like bystanders on the street but then we get to see a little bit of their perspective on to what's going on and then we also get like random sections that are kind of like a little history lesson or a little physics lesson and it all just ties together so well and blends perfectly and it makes for such an incredible reading experience the other thing I love about this book is that it deals with so many relevant issues it discusses race it discusses class it discusses immigration so many important things that I rarely ever get to see discussed in why a literature and I love it for that apart from that it's just a beautifully woven story that is heartbreaking and heartwarming and I love it so much I've also read everything everything by Nicola Yoon but I very much prefer this one so if you're trying to debate which one you should pick up this one is my recommendation the next one on my list is the book that I read I think the longest time ago and it is probably the very first contemporary that I really fell in love with and that is the Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky this book follows the story of this boy named Charlie as he is trying to navigate high school Charlie's very quiet and he keeps to himself because he's gone through a lot throughout his life that has kind of made him far more reserved than other people so in many ways he feels like he doesn't really fit in but he eventually does end up finding this group of friends that he greatly admires and the story kind of just explores his relationship with them and his relationship with himself in many ways this book is told in a very unique format it's told in letters that Charlie is writing to someone which she just addresses as friend but this book I read in my freshman year of high school and it was the absolute perfect time for me to read it because so many of the things that Charlie was going through were the same things that I was going through this book deals with mental illness it deals with abuse it deals with a lot of very very difficult hard topics so trigger warnings for any of those if you're not comfortable reading that but it is truly one of the stories that has stuck with me from the time that I read it I see about it all the time and I don't think that I would be the person that I am today had I not read it at that time in my life there those books that you read that you feel like they kind of change you and this one was definitely one of those for me it's been years since I first read it and now that I'm talking about it I kind of really want to do a reread so I might do that pretty soon but I absolutely adore this book but if you're looking for something that's definitely more on the sad side but also something that's extremely thought-provoking this book is perfect for that and finally the very last book on my list of why contemporary books that I love is the most recent one that I read and that is the upside of unrequited by becky albertalli the outside of unrequited follows the story of this girl named Molly who has had 26 crushes to date yet she has never been in a relationship she's kind of afraid to just dive in there and admit her feelings to any of these people because she's a bit afraid of unrequited love as I feel like most people are Molly lives with her twin sister her younger brother and their two moms and she is Jewish and she also deals with anxiety so in terms of representation this book is kind of incredible Molly's sister is a lesbian their family is Jewish there are several characters of color in here and like I said Molly deals with anxiety so I love the fact that this book has so much representation because that's something that's really important to me what I'm reading but I also love this book because it's so well written it's hilarious and it is so relatable becky albertalli 'he's writing style is just fantastic she can make me crack up on one page and then start tearing up on the next page because she can go from hysterical to way too real in like three seconds so that just made this book such a joy to read oh yeah because I love this one so much I'm super excited to read a Simon vs. the Homo sapiens agenda' her other book her debut book I believe which I've heard is also fantastic so I can't wait to dive into that one too but I have a feeling this one will probably still stay my favorite of her two books so far because it is just so fantastic and like every other book on this list I cannot recommend it enough so if you're looking for a relatable contemporary to dive into this summer this one is your best bet so that is it for all of my favorite y-a contemporaries let me know in the comments down below what are some of your favorite white contemporaries do we have any of the same ones do you have completely different ones I would love to hear your recommendations because like I said I really just want to read some more why kerreri right now if there are any other genres specific recommendation videos you would like to see definitely let me know that down below as well because I would love to make some more recommendation videos there's some of my favorites to film if you would like to follow me on any of my social media all of my links are in the description box as always but thank you all so much for watching this video I hope you enjoyed and I will see you in my
