The Threat of a New iPhone Looms Over Android
Jase didn't come to an Android-related channel to hear him talk about Apple, dude, you click the video and I'm here to talk about what Android is up against. The views are nice too. Wow, the threat of a new iPhone is looming over Android, peeking through the clouds. We've seen and heard various rumors about it, including one that may come with a bezel-like design like the Xiaomi Mi Mix and the Galaxy S8. Most recently, Andy Rubin's Essential Phone has been making headlines.
Now, the phone may be a few weeks away, but trusted leaker Evan Blass, aka evey leaks, has given us this now. The render depicts what is believed to be just one of the new iPhone devices inside a bulky case. Apple is said to be readying a curved screen device for later this year - it appears to be similar to that of Andy Rubin's Essential Phone with the screen wrapping around the cameras and speaker at the top of the handset.
Now, it is difficult to get a firm grasp on the true size of the bezel, especially because the phone is pictured in a case. But it's likely that there won't be inches above and below the screen, so the bezels might be even slimmer than that of the Galaxy S8. You may also notice the omission of the typical iPhone home button, just like the approach Samsung took with the S8 and Si Plus earlier this year.
Apple doesn't have to innovate as much as other companies do because it's already in a dominant position in the market. This is not because Apple can't be innovative; it's because Apple has a significant lead in terms of market share. As Jase explained, when you're first in the mind of an average person, you win. You don't have to have the best product; what you need is to have a presence in the minds of consumers.
For example, when people think of fast food restaurants, they don't think of Wendy's or Burger King - they think of McDonald's. When they need tissues, they don't say "give me some tissue paper" - they say "give me a Kleenex." This is because these companies have managed to position themselves as leaders in their respective categories.
The same principle applies to technology companies like Apple and Samsung. If you're the first product that comes to mind when people think of smartphones or tablets, you win. You don't need to be the best; just being in the minds of consumers is enough. And with a significant lead in market share, these companies can afford to take their time developing new products.
As Jase pointed out, this means that Apple can give us incremental upgrades every year and surprise us with something big every two or three years. Meanwhile, companies like LG have to push the envelope more frequently because they're not as dominant in the market. This is a key difference between these companies, and it's worth considering when evaluating their respective strategies.
So, what do you think? Do you agree that Apple doesn't need to innovate as much as other companies do? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter using #AndroidNews.
