Maximize Your Smartphone for Business

The Power of Mobile Devices: How Smartphones Have Become Computers

I've got to say, I have a lot of apps installed on my iPhone. The list kind of goes on and on and on and on and on like me! It's fun to install new apps on a smartphone, but it's also how I use them that makes all the difference. Yes, you heard that right – this smartphone is a computer. It's got hardware, software, and an operating system that does everything I need it to do and then some. If you need to get something done, don't feel like you're stuck to some kind of desktop or traditional laptop machine. In fact, many tools have been completely replaced by smartphone applications.

This phone has made me so much more productive with the things I need to do for my job to pay the bills. And we've listed out our top 10 productivity apps for the iPhone. Even if you're sitting there right now and don't have an iPhone (I don't, actually – I have another one!), some of these apps have cross-platform counterparts that can be used on other devices too. One app that's always mentioned in every article we post on Locker.com is Evernote. People love Evernote especially if you're trying to keep your notes synchronized between a variety of platforms. Evernote certainly does have an iOS conduit, making it easy to access your notes across all your devices.

Another popular file-sharing service that you might have heard about before, but perhaps aren't familiar with, is Dropbox. If you do anything in the world of sharing files legitimately online, you've probably used Dropbox at some point. But there are a few other apps out there that can turn your phone into something beyond just a phone – and I use those applications all the time. When I say "turning my phone into a scanner," I mean using apps like jotnot Pro, Genius Scan, Prismo, Signit Card Scan, Turbo Scan, Cam Scanner, Card Munch, and DocuSign.

These scanning apps are incredibly useful for making PDFs and sending them over via email or Google Docs. They're also great because they can do so much more than just scan a document – some of them can even connect to other devices on your network, allowing you to browse and access files in an easy-to-use interface. For me, the best part about using these apps is that they get the job done quickly and efficiently. They're developed with whatever tool you have in mind, which means they're often incredibly intuitive and user-friendly.

Of course, there are other productivity apps out there that can help you get more done on your phone. One of my favorites is I Talk (although, if you use a standard voice memo app, it's not too different – but what I like about I Talk is that it allows me to browse all those audio files from any machine on my local network). It's convenient, easy to use, and always right at my fingertips. When I'm talking about other apps that can help you stay productive on your phone, I also mention Skyfire – an alternative browser that makes it possible for me to watch flash-based content on the go.

I also want to give a shoutout to Gmail, TeamViewer, and Skype – all of which have their own unique features and uses. And did you know that there's actually a camera out there that can allow you to use Skype on your phone? It's called Lorex, and it allows me to make video calls to up to four cameras at once! I like to set one up in my garage so I can talk to people remotely – or just check in with family members. It's really handy for situations where I don't remember if the garage door is closed (but now I do, thanks to this handy little camera!).

We've got a whole list of productivity apps on our article that you should definitely take a look at. We've included direct links to download all of these great tools, so you can start using them right away and see how they can help you get more done on your phone. And if you have any other recommendations for productivity apps on the go – whether it's an Android device, iPhone, or Windows Phone 7 (just kidding about that last one!) – please share them with us in the comments below!
