How to add favicons to Safari tabs and bookmarks!

I love Safari but one of the things that always tempts me to go back to Google Chrome is the fact that Safari lacks favicons in its tabs bar - it's so annoying if you have a lot of tabs open, it's really really difficult to quickly find the tabs you're looking for based on just text and not having a favicon there. Not to mention that there's no favicons in the bookmarks bar - I thought I was one of the few that actually cared about such a thing but apparently a lot of people care about this.

He was eventually mentioned on during fireball and developer Daniel um went ahead and ran with it, created this hack - now we have payback ons in Safari. The utility is called fav iconographer and it's basically a hack that uses the accessibility API to find out the exact position of your Safari tabs and then superimposes favicon x' on top and it's super impressive. I mean yes it is a hack and it is very quote-unquote hacky - so it doesn't work perfectly but hey, I'll take anything I can get at this point when it comes to favicon zin my tabs bar in Safari.

So once you have the utility installed, just click the button to open up your accessibility preferences and then authenticate - then check the little box next to the utilities name. You can see the favicon zhan my tabs bar - again like I mentioned it is a hack - so it's not perfect - don't expect perfection. For instance when I dragged the Safari window, notice that the favicon is disappear and they don't come back until I stop dragging also when I drag a tab the favicon is don't actually update until I complete the drag - see that - so again not perfect but hey I'll take it at this point I'm just happy to have favicon on my taps bar.

Now you can also go into the settings in modify other additional preferences such as launch automatically a login check for updates and opt out of anonymous crash report collection and usage stats. We're going to go ahead and enable display favicons for bookmarks in the favorites bar - notice this additional small shortcoming if the safari window doesn't have focus none of your favorite cons will show up so you actually have to bring safari into focus before those favicon will display.

Now you can see the favicon in my bookmarks bar as well. To be honest, not a huge fan of the implementation of the bookmarks bar favicon icons but hey it's nice to have the option - so I'm gonna go back to preferences I'm just gonna disable that. I do love it in the tabs however - it is such a great thing to have in my Safari tabs makes it so much easier to quickly reference an open tab and it's especially useful if you have a whole bunch of tabs open - you can quickly find it based on your favicon.

Now notice if you want to close out a tab, you actually have to click on the favicon icon itself because the X button is actually underneath that icon - it's basically superimposing the icon on top of the tab right above the X.
