Built Evo 5 Vs. Limerock Park!

The Evolution of a Racing Car: A Troubleshooting Journey

Recently, I had the opportunity to take my trusty Evo out on the track at Lime Rock, and I have to say, it was an exhilarating experience. The car's performance was nothing short of impressive, with its point-and-shoot handling and impressive acceleration. However, as I soon discovered, there were some issues that needed to be addressed before I could truly push the car to its limits.

One of the first problems I encountered was a strange electrical issue that seemed to be causing the car's voltage to drop. At first, it appeared to be a low-voltage problem, which can cause all sorts of issues with the car's systems. However, as I delved deeper into the problem, I began to suspect that it might not be related to the voltage at all. Instead, I thought maybe it was a fuel pressure issue or perhaps even a lean-cut problem. The car seemed to be struggling to get enough fuel, and when that happens, it can cause serious problems with engine performance.

I soon realized that having a standalone ECU system with fail-safes would be invaluable in helping me diagnose the issue. I'm glad I have this system installed, as it's given me more room to figure out what's going on. Tommy was right to remind me that sometimes, you need to take a step back and assess the situation before jumping into action.

One thing I noticed during my time on the track is that ABS doesn't seem to work on my car. I'm not entirely sure why this is, but it seems to be a design quirk or perhaps an issue with the system itself. However, I did notice that when I locked up all four wheels, there was indeed more traction and stability. This led me to think about the importance of weight transfer and how it affects handling.

Speaking of which, one of the biggest challenges I faced on the track was understeer. It's a common issue with many cars, but it seemed particularly pronounced in my Evo. After some experimentation, I discovered that adjusting the tire pressures might be the solution to this problem. However, I'm still not entirely convinced that it's a tire issue or an alignment problem.

Despite these challenges, I was thrilled with how the Evo performed on the track. The Porsches are notoriously difficult to handle, but my car seemed to shine in lower-speed situations. I even managed to run faster laps than the Porsche we called to see, which was impressive considering it's a highly modified car.

One of the funniest moments during my time on the track came when I melted my center caps. The extreme heat caused the plastic tabs that hold them in place to melt, and they fell out. It was a ridiculous mistake, but also a humorous reminder of just how hot it gets when you're pushing your car to its limits.

As I concluded my session at Lime Rock, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to drive such an incredible machine. Despite the challenges we faced, the Evo proved itself to be a formidable opponent on the track. And with some tweaks and adjustments, I'm confident that it will continue to perform well in the future.

As I reflect on my time at Lime Rock, I realize just how lucky I am to have access to such an amazing community of car enthusiasts. The drivers club there is incredibly supportive, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it. And as for Tommy, he's always been a great sounding board for my ideas and concerns.

For now, I'll just have to wait and see how the alternator issue resolves itself. Luckily, I have a jump pack with me that should keep me running until then. Fingers crossed that it won't be too much of an inconvenience. And with any luck, we'll get some footage out soon to show everyone what this car is capable of.

As I wrap up my article, I want to thank the Dagwood for being such a wonderful place to grab a Shirley Temple and discuss all things racing. It's always great to have a friendly spot like that where we can relax and chat about our favorite cars. And finally, I want to say thanks again to everyone who watched this video – it means the world to me!

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enI'm extremely excited guys first off welcome to today's video but you guys know I've been putting so much time and effort into the Evo doing all the stuff to make it handle better and I've yet to been able to take it on the track since the very first time I got it when I took it out just kind of for fun with not a proper setup so today is gonna be the final track prep before I take it to Lime Rock and you guys might remember the last time I was headed to Lime Rock I blew it up the day before so hopefully all goes as planned and I actually get to turn some laps in it cuz I'm curious especially having done laps there with the Porsche where it stacks up for lap times too so the first thing that I'm going to do on this thing is a little bit of a preventative mod that will be very helpful at the track and then we're gonna head over and go get a proper race alignment with Charlie one thing that this car has been missing that should have been on it since day one but I've been waiting to order one is a catch cam having a built engine it's not ideal to just be running the factory PCV system which really consists of this little line that goes back into the intake so if we are getting blow by we're just sucking it right back in and then the little one in the back of the head as well as always ma performance have my back and they got me set up with what they recommended it's actually an Evo eight catch-can kit that's made by radium so we're gonna unbox the stuff see what we got I know I might have to do a little bit of modification to make it work on the five but I'm guessing it should be simple maybe just a few little bracket mods so I actually have done any research on the specific kit yet but it seems to be pretty cool it's actually got dual canisters these things are really nice too they come with a little dipstick so you can see if you're full or not it's always a good thing to have when draining catch cans can be a bit of a pain just to check the levels on them I don't know if I will get a lot of blow-by in this engine or not I'd like to think that I won't but it's cool it's like it's got some stainless mesh in there he isn't really going to be able to see it but it seems like a pretty cool device these are actually pretty cool I didn't even realize it's talking about draining it it's the style where you can actually just spin it open and you could in theory just drain it like this kind of a similar style to that I have on the Mustang gt350 kinda looks like this is designed to just go all right so it looks like this side for sure will work I'll just bolt right like that hopefully I'll have enough room for the hood clearance to which I think we should cool it was Oh well flip it upside down duh this sides gonna be tricky and that's where I might need to make a custom bracket for the other side but here we've got plenty of room and it should just mount right down here all nice like so be nice tucked in out of the way and then I'll rig something up for the other one if I want to make myself sound like a hypocrite even more we've actually got petcock drain kits too for these please we'll just go in the bottom then we can easily drain kind of like a how I have set up on the S 15 now 32 to drain the catch cans so for now I'm just gonna really like any of these cash cans installed and show you guys kind of how to pull them these up and then we'll worry about this stuff later so the kid actually is designed to run the catch can in line rather than bending the atmosphere just because of space reasons I can always add a filter if I want to vent to atmosphere later but basically we'll have our PCV go in through the top and then up through the side we'll go back into the intake and then this should catch any sort of oil or blow by that we have so I'm going to tighten up these fittings temporarily mounted up and then we'll cut the line and it should take just two seconds to install if you Adam it's always nice to use some nice aluminum an wrenches so you don't scratch up all the fittings and stuff the strut tower on the Yugo five was a little bit different than the eight and I actually ended up just like kind of prying the bracket a little bit what's nice when the brackets are thinner you can usually like pry them and make them kind of go where you want them so I was able to kind of wiggle it get it straight and now I'll just cut the line and this one's done and I just got to figure out where I want to mount the other one or if I want to come up with some sort of custom bracket or something how I want to stuff it back in this area alright so we got the first catch-can installed I did a quick boost leak test and the car is actually leaking a little bit underneath the throttle body looking at something to do with the I AK but the car just seemed like it wasn't as fast as it's been so that's something that I definitely want to keep an eye on and tackle once I have the proper stuff to do it charlie get this thing a little dialed in I used to get friend of ours it works this thing I can't believe it only was a 2800 pounds so the corner bouncing alignment made sure everything's in spec and went over a couple other things I think I'm going to fix the actual issue maybe the voltage just show this thing to so it seems like a pretty productive day it's funny this thing was about to blow out the vlogging camera and talk about how this thing cruises at high rpm when I move it I don't give a cop slow day I wish I felt more I'd like to set up with the car but I'm just trying to finish it stay concentrated be sure don't forget any little odds and ends really attracted tomorrow so I apologize I'm just heading back to the house or go hang out girlfriend maybe insane in a bit so she I know she's had a rough day so trying to give her some time and attention seconds maybe all the video again that's pretty cool sorry every time I pull out the camera she doesn't want to play with me anymore one yeah that's all weird and shy okay what if the toy comes after you today is the day that I've been so eagerly awaiting we're headed to Lime Rock about to rip up the old evil five Tommy is gonna meet me up there and he's gonna hang out maybe film some outside clips but it's a drivers club day which is like a private club thing and they're letting me drive today for a little bit so I want to see what the he was gonna put down for some lap time so finally I get to take him out there she wants it she saw the camera buddies I ready at 70 sake so as I'm going up there Tommy started following me hey I was that ignite smell good he liked it early morning your car looks so cool my rear view and then I see these mirrors and I it just looks hilarious it looks like like you know when dogs have their ears folded back it goes from a mean - just like adorably like what do they call when you cut a limb off that's what this looks like yeah it lost its ears look at how weird this thing looks so cute it's like a little oh they're like barriers it's got little bears there's a lot of places we get stuck on cars there's actually a lot of like legal passing zones Bender's gonna be rubbing on the track I'm convinced even with a quieter exhaust I'm gonna get through an off track for me to loud so I'm hoping with a few laps that I get in my two goals one to set a sub 1 minute lap I think my best in the 4 she was like 101 so that'd be sick I also have a strong urge to lap an old guy either in a Corvette or a Viper like a gt3 I don't know what they'll have out here but that would be the coolest thing in the knee but as we gain by like a really expensive supercar good yeah you're real good are you still here born and raised my parents raised Spanish Elvis so I was coming here since I was blunt filled I do driver coach at the time he's gonna go out with me for the first couple laps to make sure I'm not too much of an idiot keep an eye on a you know even on like you know me drives other people's cars but you scared of we'll go for another hot lap so I can be carrying a lot of horse got to work on my inputs on this car the Porsche sucker it's a zoomed in on my face wave break traction like 15 feet I don't unlock it my times I like mine better mine just displays them as I'm going how'd you do how'd it feel it felt much better I started doing one hot lap and the one cool down lap and I felt a lot better about that 102 I'm doing 135 what doing 134 that's your top yeah I definitely think there's room to like shave another two seconds getting below the minute marks gonna be hard but I do think that's already faster than I've run in the Porsche yeah didn't I do like a 104 in the Porsche I'm over breaking into every corner this thing old is that year this thing is terrifying with trail braking yep I know even if you're braking in a straight line that still feels like it wants to over rotate there's a way to fix that there's a way to fix out with your suspension really cuz I was having a issue with the Miata and I called the guys from togi factory and they told me what to do there's a way to fix that with your suspension being a new building I'm a little bit nervous and I'm not as focused on my line as I should be they're just so much weird stuff going over the car I was getting some low voltage stuff that it made me kind of nervous and then Tommy reminds me that I have a stand alone with a bunch of safeties on this thing so a little bit less nervous because of that little understeer II been playing with the tire pressure lowered it down a little bit in the front and soften the dampening see if that helps a little bit this thing is just pretty terrifying on this track it's so fast the audio kind of sucked on my GoPro with wind noise and everything so I thought I would do the voiceover thing like I did last time so towards the end of the session I starting a little bit more comfortable braking later I don't really feel like my ABS work that well which is kind of weird but the biggest problem I had with a car even though I was able to brake a little bit later I still do brake earlier than I would have wanted to because it was so understeery I don't know if you'll be able to tell here but the car is just straight plowing through this corner so if we that's something I can figure out what set up later but the car is able to carry speed and feels great on the a little bit wider corners but the understeer is just terrible so especially here - coming up the hill it's just under sea under steer under steer under steer and the compression kind of gives it enough grip to go but we were cooking doing like 135 on the Main Street just constantly maxing out that speed oh here's another area was just super understeery definitely a terrifying car to drive around the track suspension weisfelt great no real rubbing brakes felt pretty good they did get a little hot but I mean look at the speedo in this clip it's just maxed maxed out so I would kind of do like one hot lap and I would do a cool-down then I do another hot lap just cuz I don't really have a lot of gauges and I was getting nervous with my voltage issue you wanna film it 101 16 at 135 yeah I'll film it real quick there you go that's a good time it's not bad do the weird thing with these tires I don't know a lot about our trip awaits first lap thank you phenomenal second lap I mean I should know this from initial D I'm all wheel drive cars the front ones get super greasy leo and it just like understeered everywhere so maybe that's something off to visit with suspension but the car is having a lot of voltage issues the alternator was recently changed and me and Tommy are concerned that maybe because it's not low AM it's like having issues it's made funny noises and stuff but the voltage loss is getting so bad now that the cars starting to break up initially I didn't even want to drive it but Tommy reminded me that I do have a standalone on this car with fail-safes but I believe it was starting to fuel cut or lean cut or something because when the voltage gets low the fuel pressures not pumping enough fuel and the car starts going lean which is really really bad and I just want to push it much more but I'm satisfied I think it's given me more room to figure out what's going on by the way Tommy I don't think abs works on this car you know I laid into it I'm gonna try locked him all up okay so it locked all four up there was a lot more room to break than I was initially but this car is very challenging to drive the Porsches point-and-shoot and this one is just kind of you got off some finesse to get it to do exactly what you want it to a lot of weight transfer and turn your key on see if the ABS light comes on with the key all the way is there an ABS light yeah that's weird so the ABS light is functioning yeah that's crazy um yeah no I'm super super happy that I got to take it out I have to give a massive thank you to the drivers club at Lime Rock where you can be a member and you come out here for all these sessions and stuff and they were kind enough to let me squeeze in with my evo I've been begging for a while ever since I blew it up I don't know how to look out there Tommy he looks sick we got some good clubs yeah I mean this thing is definitely still the fastest on the mountain but it's definitely on Lime Rock that's confirmed so this thing really shines on the lower speed stuff yeah the higher speed stuff is surskit a little terrifying I mean doing 135 in this thing is the I'm pretty sure I'll have to go back and we get a footage I ran a faster lap in this than the Porsche that we called to see anyway that's not a definition of an electrical issue I don't know what is my tack so I'm just gonna wrap up the video here pretty happy with how the Evo did I'm kind of curious to see what you guys thought of it based on the footage I'm just really stressing because the alternator issue I don't know what's going on but the cars like losing voltage luckily I have a jump pack with me so I don't really want to drive until that's figured out and I really got to figure out the understeering issue but other than that I'm pretty impressed with it would you think it did sick yeah so you were bummed but like two hour long session that grin you were not there an hour with really no issue you're able to drive it at least to barbecue yeah you win you're not wrong I'm curious whether it's a tire issue or these just don't like heat speaking with my pressures pretty low I probably should've pumped him up after the track I don't know if it's a tire thing or an alignment thing but overall though I still think it's not bad yeah every time it was sick it looks sick how sound sounded sick cool give me some house well I'm kind of in a weird mood so I think I'm gonna wrap up the video here but I'll see you guys tomorrow oh I forgot to tell you guys I melted my Center caps in the front there's so much heat that the plastic tabs that hold them in melted and they fell out so not one I'll get more and then for the track I'll just have to make note to take out my Center gaps it's hilarious I guess now I know why racing wheels on center caps it's s l's don't even come with like place oh no yeah so anyway that's it guys and I'll see you tomorrow broken-down times been running off different jump packs and stuff this time we decided to go across the street to the Dagwood get a Shirley Temple to go and now let's see what mr. Tom has to say about it we weren't on the Dagwood to go get some drinks Shirley Temple hey yeah I go in there I'm like I like to drink to go oh that's something you on our state nowhere to go you do you know about in children is a charge that'll be equal you passed yuquot apart starting your way back this in case all right we're gonna run out the jumper car jumping cable good luck alternator doesn't vary selection sucks in ISM you stop it some don't demand good luck so they're always having trouble with the fans here my biggest fanI'm extremely excited guys first off welcome to today's video but you guys know I've been putting so much time and effort into the Evo doing all the stuff to make it handle better and I've yet to been able to take it on the track since the very first time how the Evo did I'm kind of curious to see what you guys thought of it based on the footage I'm just really stressing because the alternator issue I don't know what's going on but the cars like losing voltage luckily I have a jump pack with me so I don't really want to drive until that's figured out and I really got to figure out the understeering issue but other than that I'm pretty impressed with it would you think it did sick yeah so you were bummed but like two hour long session that grin you were not there an hour with really no issue you're able to drive it at least to barbecue yeah you win you're not wrong I'm curious whether it's a tire issue or these just don't like heat speaking with my pressures pretty low I probably should've pumped him up after the track I don't know if it's a tire thing or an alignment thing but overall though I still think it's not bad yeah every time it was sick it looks sick how sound sounded sick cool give me some house well I'm kind of in a weird mood so I think I'm gonna wrap up the video here but I'll see you guys tomorrow oh I forgot to tell you guys I melted my Center caps in the front there's so much heat that the plastic tabs that hold them in melted and they fell out so not one I'll get more and then for the track I'll just have to make note to take out my Center gaps it's hilarious I guess now I know why racing wheels on center caps it's s l's don't even come with like place oh no yeah so anyway that's it guys and I'll see you tomorrow broken-down times been running off different jump packs and stuff this time we decided to go across the street to the Dagwood get a Shirley Temple to go and now let's see what mr. Tom has to say about it we weren't on the Dagwood to go get some drinks Shirley Temple hey yeah I go in there I'm like I like to drink to go oh that's something you on our state nowhere to go you do you know about in children is a charge that'll be equal you passed yuquot apart starting your way back this in case all right we're gonna run out the jumper car jumping cable good luck alternator doesn't vary selection sucks in ISM you stop it some don't demand good luck so they're always having trouble with the fans here my biggest fan\n"
