Drag Week 2015: A Year to Remember
The organizers of Drag Week have once again outdone themselves with an event that will go down in history as one of the best, if not the best, ever. The week-long celebration of all things drag racing brought together some of the biggest names in the industry, and it was clear from the get-go that this year's event was going to be special.
As the teams began their preparations for the big day, tensions were high and nerves were on edge. The competition was fierce, with teams pushing themselves to the limit in a bid to claim the top spot. And then there was the issue of the mysterious 396 car, which had been bought by one team for $1,500 back in the 1970s. Despite its age and questionable provenance, the car somehow managed to turn up at the event running smoothly, with a reported top speed of over 40 miles per hour.
But it wasn't just the cars that were causing excitement - the crowds were also abuzz with the news that a group of Australians had made the journey from across the pond to compete in the event. And as if that weren't enough, there was also a contingent of Canadians and even a Finnish team member who would be joining in on the action.
As the teams took to the track for their first round of racing, it quickly became apparent that this year's Drag Week was going to be one to remember. With a bigger variety of cool cars than ever before, the competition was fierce and the racing was intense. And then there were the drama-filled moments off the track - including a close call when one team member had a nasty accident while driving.
Despite the ups and downs, the teams remained committed to their goals, and it wasn't long before the competition began to heat up in earnest. Matt Velasco's 72 Dart, with its sleek black primer job and twin turbo big-block Mopar engine, was a particular standout among the field - and he would go on to claim several top spots throughout the week.
But despite all the excitement and anticipation, there were also some unexpected moments of drama off the track. For example, when one team member got a little too enthusiastic while driving and ended up blowing out his transmission - only for it to be fixed and good as new by the end of the day.
As the event drew to a close, it was clear that this year's Drag Week had truly been something special. The racing had been fierce, the cars were incredible, and the drama off the track had kept everyone on their toes. And with so many talented teams competing for the top spot, it was hard to predict who would come out on top.
In the end, it was one team member who emerged victorious, claiming a new personal best time that left the crowd gasping in awe. But despite not winning the main event, he had still pulled off an impressive performance - and everyone couldn't be happier for him.
But before we get to the racing results, let's take a trip back on the road with one team member who had a very different experience at Drag Week. We ran alongside them for about 20 miles, following their lead car through the countryside until they stopped at the first checkpoint - where things quickly took a turn for the worse.
As we made our way through the rolling hills and countryside, we came across a group of javelin drivers who were in the middle of a heated competition. We watched from the sidelines as the drivers took turns attempting to drive their vehicles down a steep hill without crashing - with one driver even getting a little too enthusiastic and hopping out of his vehicle to see if it was still running.
Despite the challenges, we eventually made our way back to the road, where things quickly took another turn for the worse. One team member's car (UT) suddenly quit working on us, leaving us stranded on the side of the road. After some tinkering and a visit from a mechanic, we were finally back on the move - but not before making an unscheduled stop at Alex Taylor and Nickelodeon to get a closer look at their impressive stretchy truck.
As we made our way through the rest of the drive, things took another turn for the worse when one team member spotted another driver cutting them off on the road. The resulting argument was heated - but in the end, all was forgiven as they pulled over and let us get back on the move.
And finally, it's time to talk about the racing itself. With so many talented teams competing for the top spot, the competition was fierce - but in the end, it was one team who emerged victorious, claiming a new personal best time that left everyone gasping in awe.
But before we get into all the details of the racing, let's take a look back at some of the highlights from around the event. From the Aussies' massive wheelie to the close calls and near-misses on the track - there were plenty of drama-filled moments off the road that kept everyone entertained throughout the week.
And as we look back on this year's Drag Week, it's clear that this was an event that will be remembered for years to come. With so much talent, excitement, and drama packed into one incredible week, it's no wonder that everyone is already looking forward to next year's event.
As the teams pack up their gear and say goodbye to each other, we can't help but feel a sense of sadness at the end of another fantastic Drag Week. But we know that we'll be back again soon - ready for more racing, more drama, and more of all the excitement that this incredible event has to offer.
And so, as we close out another year of Drag Week 2015, we can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it all. It's been an incredible week, full of twists and turns - and we can't wait to see what next year brings.
