February is Black History Month, and to commemorate this special occasion, we are excited to bring you an unboxing of a very special Apple Watch - the Black Unity Collection.
The packaging for this special edition Apple Watch is nondescript at first glance. The box itself has a simple design, with the words "Apple Watch" engraved on top. On the bottom, it clearly states that this is a Space Gray Aluminum Series 6 Apple Watch, accompanied by the Black Unity Sport Band, which can only be obtained exclusively with this set. It's worth noting that this particular model features a 44mm case size.
To open the box, one simply needs to pull out two green arrows and release them. The packaging is standard Apple Watch fare, complete with instructions on how to get started with your new device. As you can see, there are no frills or bells and whistles here - just a straightforward, functional design that allows you to easily access the contents of the box.
Upon opening the first box, we find two additional black boxes: one containing an Apple Watch Series 6 Aluminum model, while the other holds the Black Unity Sport Band. As with any Apple product, the watch comes packaged with a range of accessories, including a magnetic charging cable featuring USB-A on the opposite end. While it's a useful feature, it would have been nice to see this cable come in black - perhaps something similar to the Lightning Cable that came with our Magic Trackpad 2.
The Apple Watch itself is wrapped in black paper as part of Apple's green initiative, which aims to reduce waste and minimize environmental impact. If you look closely, the words "Black Unity" are laser etched onto the sapphire glass backside of the watch. The process used to create these engravings is a testament to Apple's commitment to precision and quality.
Moving on to the Black Unity Sport Band, it's clear that this is no ordinary accessory. Unlike traditional silicone sport bands, which come in a single solid color, the Black Unity Band features three distinct colors - red, black, and green. These colors are not simply painted onto the band; instead, they're made from individual pieces of colored floral elastomer, which are then assembled by hand and compression molded into a single, cohesive unit.
It's worth noting that these individual pieces of colored elastomer are carefully selected to create a unique pattern that shifts dynamically as the Apple Watch moves. This means that no two faces on this watch will be exactly alike - making it truly one-of-a-kind accessory for anyone who purchases it. The Black Unity Band also features laser-etched words, including "Truth," "Power," and "Solidarity" on the stainless steel fastening pin.
Now that we've taken a look at the Apple Watch itself and its accompanying accessories, it's time to get started with our new device. We'll snap on the Black Unity Sport Band and set up our watch face - which features an all-black design or comes in a limited edition version featuring yellow gold accents, complete with a unique pattern that shifts dynamically as we move.
One exciting feature of this watch face is its availability to everyone who downloads Watch OS 7.3. Additionally, users will be eligible for a special award by completing the Unity Activity Challenge - which requires closing your Move Ring for seven consecutive days during February. The Black Unity Apple Watch itself retails for $399 for the GPS model and $499 for Wi-Fi plus Cellular.
Interestingly, a portion of sales from this special edition watch will go towards supporting organizations that promote equality and civil rights. Apple is also celebrating Black History Month through various initiatives - including curated playlists on Apple Music, essays, original videos, and more from black influencers musicians authors and directors. Users can access specially curated Apple Maps guides made in partnership with Eat Okra, a Brooklyn-based company that aims to support local businesses owned by people of color.
For Essential Stories on the Apple TV App, this month's theme will focus on highlighting the multi-dimensionality of the Black family - including its representation on screen. On Apple Newsreaders, users can explore curated topic groups centered around journalism related to race in America. For those subscribed to Apple News+, there's a collection of audio articles celebrating the black experience.
On Apple Books, look for the special tab featuring books written or narrated by Black authors and narrators. Finally, on Apple Podcasts, creators from around the world will be sharing thoughtful interpretations of Black families - with an extended promotion of "Seizing Freedom from VPN," a show documenting the struggle to define freedom after 400 years of slavery.
