Introducing Air Video App: Stream and Convert Videos on Your iPad
Hello YouTube, it's Detroit Borg here, and today I'm going to demonstrate the Air Video app for the iPad. This app is also available for the iPod touch and iPhone, and it allows you to stream video files from your computer to your iPad. Not only does it free up some storage space on your iPad, but it also converts video files that don't normally play on the iPad.
To get started with Air Video, we need to add a server to our setup. Since I'm using my local Wi-Fi, I'll just go ahead and launch Air Video now. Yes, Air Video does work on both local Wi-Fi networks and over the Internet, so it will definitely work with 3G as well. However, there are some challenges to getting it to work over the internet, and that's a topic we can discuss later.
The first step in setting up Air Video is to add a server. Since I'm using my local Wi-Fi, all I need to do is go to this plus sign, select "add server," and then I'll see my iMac listed. Selecting "okay" will show me the three folders I've added. Now, I have the option to share folders or playlists. In this case, I have podcast, which is a playlist, movies, which is a folder, and mic one, which is my home folder for the iMac.
Let's go ahead and select "movies" since that's where all my videos are kept. We'll just grab the first video and see how it plays. Now, we can see a preview of our video in the right-hand side panel, along with some additional information such as the resolution, duration, and final size. In this case, the resolution is 1280 x 720, the duration is 8 minutes and 52 seconds, and the final size is 576 mbes.
We can see several options here: play directly, convert, and add to iTunes. The "play directly" option allows us to play the video automatically, since it's compatible with our iPad. If we want to scrub through the video or jump forward or backward, we can do so using this option. We'll demonstrate that by playing the video now and then stopping it to show you how we can scrub through it.
Now, let's go ahead and select a video file that won't play automatically. I happen to have "momento" right here, which is an avi file that doesn't normally play on my iPad. If I select this video file, I no longer have the option to play it directly. Instead, I'm offered the options of playing with live conversion or converting it. Since the server will convert the video live and play it back, I'll choose the "play with live conversion" option.
Now that we've selected a video file, let's see how the conversion process works. We can hit the "conversion queue" button to see what's happening in our conversion queue. It looks like the server is currently converting our video file, and it should take about 6 minutes and 6 seconds to complete once it's done.
Once the conversion is complete, we'll be able to play the converted video directly from our iPad. Let's go ahead and select "continue" to see what happens next. And... there you go! Our video has been successfully converted, and we can now play it directly from our iPad.
One of the other benefits of Air Video is that our video files will play automatically, without needing any additional setup or configuration. We simply need to hit the "play" button, and the app will take care of everything else. If we want to modify how our video files are converted, we can do so by going to the global settings menu.
In addition to playing videos directly, Air Video also allows us to add them to our iTunes folder on our computer or other devices. This can be useful if you need to access your videos across multiple platforms. We can also adjust the maximum width and height of our converted videos as well as their quality using these options in the global settings menu.
In conclusion, Air Video is a great tool for streaming and converting video files on your iPad. With its ability to play incompatible file formats directly and convert them live for seamless playback, it's perfect for anyone looking to free up space on their device or enjoy videos without needing additional setup. Thanks for watching!
