iPhone XS & XS Max Review

New iPhones Come with Wider Stereo Sound

A few generations ago, iPhone speakers have been located here and up here, and the earpiece sound coming from this speaker is now significantly louder and clearer, perfect for those Netflix chill sessions. Stereo recording is also now supported while shooting video, and it's a great feature to have on smartphones.

Dual-SIM Support Coming to iPhones

Dual-sim is also now coming to the iPhones, but not in the usual way. You still have one physical SIM card slot, but there's also an embedded sim. Essentially, you can have two numbers on an iPhone, and support will come in an upcoming iOS update. Dual-sims have been around for quite a long time now in the Android world, but it's nice to see them coming to the iPhone.

Apple Needs to Roll Out More True Dual-Sim iPhones

I personally would like to appeal to Apple to roll out more true dual sim iPhones to more parts of Asia where dual SIM are actually a part of life. Countries like Malaysia and India are some of the largest dual SIM using countries in the world. While it's difficult to say that these phones last thirty minutes and 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 10, as Apple claims, I can attest that the iPhone 10's max lasts about five and a half hours of screen on time, which is pretty impressive considering for more than three of these five and a half hours I was playing Pokémon go non-stop with the phone at full brightness while it still may not be a powerhouse in terms of long lasting use for a heavy user like me. In our time with these phones, we were able to get through a full day of moderate use.

Long-Lasting Use: A Personal Perspective

For a heavy user like me, I personally dream of the day where I don't have to lug around a power bank and with this phone as my daily driver, I still will be looking for ways to extend battery life. Speaking of charging, these phones support fast charging, which can go from 0 to 42 percent in just under half an hour if you are willing to shell out some serious dough for the optional fast chargers. Maybe next year Apple will bundle one without a price increase.

Wireless Charging Speeds Improved

Wireless charging speeds also have been slightly improved, which is good news if you've already invested in one. The iPhone 10s and 10's max are beautiful phones made more powerful with even better cameras. When you add it all up, these updates help make last year's already solid phone even better.

The Verdict: Are These Phones Worth Upgrading For?

The iPhone 10s and 10's max both deserve the gadget match seal of approval that they're beautiful phones made more powerful with even better cameras. However, there are still some things I'd love to see from Apple, such as abandoning the Lightning port and adopting USB type-c for its price. I also wish Apple would include a fast charger in the box and for all its efficiency improvements, I'd still want a battery that will last me a whole day with heavy use and then some.

Should You Upgrade?

If you own an iPhone 10, it's more prudent to wait another year unless money isn't an issue. Hold on to last year's iPhone 8 and 8 plus 2 if you have them. If you have an even older iPhone but still think $1000 is excessive, we don't blame you.

New iPhone 10: The Affordable Alternative

Apple's new more affordable iPhone 10 debuts at the end of next month that phone starts at $749 and minus a few bells and whistles is still a very solid phone. It has the best of what's in these ones. If $749 is still too much, Apple is still selling the seven seven plus eight and eight plus and those start at about 450 US dollars. I still recommend these seven plus it's a great phone even if it's already two years old.

Conclusion

While some will say that the phones are overpriced, part of the appeal of the iPhone is that they work well for a long time and are well thought out. Intangibles like how if you buy into the Apple ecosystem everything just works seamlessly things like airdrop sharing Wi-Fi passwords with a prompt and pairing a new set of ear pods are things that you will only appreciate once you experience them. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enApple's best iPhone just got bigger but is bigger better and does that mean you should buy it hi I'm Michael Josh and you're watching gadget match this is Apple's new iPhone for 2018 the iPhone tennis it's supposedly an improved version of last year's game-changing model and now it's been super-sized this is the iPhone tennis max Apple says it's everything you like about the iPhone taken to the extreme there's a lot to like about these new phones they come this fresh new gold color and powered by what Apple claims is the most powerful processor ever put on a smart phone they take better photos and have faster more secure face ID but when it comes down to it are these upgrades significant enough should you ride the hype train all the way to the Apple Store or with a more affordable model coming next month should you wait stick with us for the next few minutes and we'll answer all of these questions and then some this is our iPhone 10s and 10's max review this video is brought to you by the letter S for Singapore this sunny island city which we'll explore together with these two new iPhones and s4s year you know every other year in an iPhones history where the updates are more incremental 2018 is an S year and if last year brought us a major shake-up to the iPhone as we know it this year it's all about refining and improving the iPhone 10 Apple's most important product since the original iPhone here take a look on the outside it's pretty much the same all glass body with a stainless steel frame Apple says these new iPhones are made of a tougher kind of glass that are more scratch resistant if you're looking for something fresh try this new gold color it's a subdued more subtle kind of gold and if you look closely there are a couple of new and tenna bands where they weren't before on both the top and bottom edges we're sure this will make cell reception better but we're a bit bothered that Apple decided to break up the symmetry that they have always been a sucker for of course there's also now a bigger model something I personally have been waiting for the iPhone 10's max is about the size of the plus-sized iPhones of years past but it's got a 6.5 inch display the biggest we've seen on an iPhone but is bigger better that's the thing this time around it's not one of my biggest pet peeves is that when phones usually came in two sizes the bigger phone was almost always better it had two cameras maybe a more powerful processor but this time around that's not the case and we celebrate the fact that whether you like a small iPhone or a big iPhone you're getting the same great phone sure the display and the battery may be larger because it's a bigger phone but everything else is equal so if you're torn between the two models just ask yourself which size do I prefer and well I really benefit from larger screen real estate if you have the max model when you hold your phone like this some apps will show you more take for example the calendar app here you can see you get a second column with more information and if you're browsing sites like gadget matcom you'll get a different kind of view some users will prefer a smaller phone because they have small heads and that's justified the iPhone 10's max is really for two-handed use but there are some features that help you use it with one hand you can dive into settings and turn on reach ability so you can swipe down here where the home button used to be typing with one hand unlike other phones where they make the whole display smaller on iOS you can move your keyboard to either side still getting that big screen that you paid for powering these new iPhones is an all-new processor called the a12 Bionic chip this system on a chip is faster smarter and also more power efficient for everyday users this means your phone should feel snappier processor hungry tasks like gaming and augmented reality breezier and your battery longer elastic Apple promises 30 minutes more for the tennis and about one and a half hours for the tennis max so does the iPhone 10s live up to those claims keep on watching beyond more obvious benefits of the new processor a lot goes on under the hood that makes new features possible and old features better face ID for example is a tad bit faster not to mention more secure both in the dark and under bright sunlight and with data that apples collected it's smarter too being able to identify safe face shapes even ethnicities this last one really applies to me often the first time I pick up my phone in the morning when I'm half asleep still in bed my small eyes are probably smaller so I assume my iPhone 10 as soon as my eyes are still closed and face ID will often fail in the week that I've used the new iPhone I haven't had any problems like that day to day iPhone use isn't necessarily faster than on last year's iPhone at least to me it's pretty snappy to begin with I feel like it's almost necessary to mention hub G runs and high settings by default and gameplay is smooth and lag free as can be expected same goes for fortnight at the phone's launch in Cupertino last week apple also demoed an upcoming version of Elder Scrolls I got to try that game during a closed-door briefing and all I can say is that mobile gaming is starting to slowly become closer and closer to console gaming Apple is still casting its bets on augmented reality coupled with software improvements the new hardware is improving the way AR performed so for example the time that it takes for plane detection basically when the iPhone searches for a flat surface on which to overlay the augmented reality world is now faster than before and now with multiplayer AR games on the App Store you can imagine how all that extra power makes the experience much more seamless of all the things the new iPhone has going for it one of the most significant changes is its new camera like on the iPhone 10 you get dual cameras on both models one with two times zoom which you probably know I'm a big fan of they don't hype it as much but this year these new iPhones have bigger image sensors a large image sensor on any kind of digital camera is what you should look for among other things it delivers better photos in low light one new feature is called Smart HDR not to be confused with Auto HDR on the iPhone 10 you know how you're always advise not to shoot against the light or not to shoot when your subject is backlit well now with the iPhone 10s shoot away with the Sun at its brightest and the Marina Bay Sands behind us we took these photos of chai and were surprised to see how the details on her face were still visible not completely drowned out by shadows and then later that evening while I was standing in the shadows with the well-lit avatar esque cloud forest behind me we got this shot smart HDR works even if you have other special shooting modes on so whether you're shooting a portrait or a panorama it works well it also works while shooting Full HD and 4k video as long as you're shooting at 30 frames per second one of the hallmarks of great photography seems to be really creamy depth of field I personally am a fan of Boca and full frame cameras like this one with superfast lenses are good at it Apple seems to agree as depth mapping is a big word being thrown around we're actually very impressed when it comes to digital bokeh most phones keep a subject in focus and just apply a blur to the entire background Apple takes this a step further so objects further away are less in focus than those closer to the subject just like on a professional camera take this photo for example chai is in focus as well as the plants that are the same distance away from the camera as her the plant in the or ground is slightly blurred and the trees in the background have a creamier blur to them Apple now also gives you the option to change the amount of blur after you take the shot it's worth pointing out that Samson had this feature called life focus since the Galaxy Note 8 a year ago but who does it better let's take a look at the same shot on the iPhone you tap Edit and you get this slider from the middle point of F 4.5 you can get more blur all the way to F 1.4 no blur at all at f-16 while both phones are not able to achieve a very clean cut out the iPhone 10 SS blur looks better the note 9 thinks that the whole bush on the right-hand side of the photo is part of the subject both phones did a better job in this example so it might also be a case-to-case basis depending on the scene in low-light usually where the note 9 shines blur is pretty much the same but the note 9s photo wasn't able to capture the golden lights behind her for even better context here's how the pixel 2 and a full-frame mirrorless camera took the same photo using the iPhones true depth sensor the reason behind the knotch the front-facing camera performs almost as good as the main camera in this example I plunged into a bed of white flowers and as was in our first example the amount of blur depends on how far the flowers were from the camera behind the hood both the hardware and the software come together for some smarter tech one example is portraits when you have glasses on before edge detection would sometimes be tricked by a pair of specs see these examples then see the same photo taken with an iPhone 10s it needs to be said that the cutouts are nowhere near perfect sometimes I wish processing would just feather out the edges around the subject so you don't get those harsh cooker cutouts especially around long hair and before we leave the subject a whole year since its launch portrait lighting is now officially out of beta overall we can say that the camera on the iPhone tennis is much improved over last year's iPhone 10 here take a look at other photos we snapped around Singapore in my briefing with Apple they told me that the rear flash has also been tweaks and should be better so we took a few photos and we'll let you be the judge the iPhone tennis and tennis max should also have improved video stabilization so I hopped on a bike to see although I'm told I was lousy at it so the stabilized video still has some shake video shot while walking and from a moving car came out smoother if you think some of the locations in this video are familiar maybe it's because you saw crazy rich Asians which was shot here the director of that movie John Chu actually shot a whole short film using the iPhone 10s you should definitely check it out apples always been known for caring even about the little things like water resistance which I personally think should always come standard especially if it's always raining where you live these phones now have a higher water resistance rating ip68 which means it can be submerged up to two meters for thirty minutes but please don't Apple does not include water damage and its warranty Apple says it's tested spills from not just water but also coffee tea soda and beer Apple says that in the event it happens rinse your phone pat it dry and leave it out to dry for a few hours before using again I've also been told that the phone now knows when your fingers or the display is wet and will still respond to touch speaking of little things the new iPhones come with wider stereo sound since a few generations ago Spiro speakers have been located here and up here also the earpiece sound coming from this speaker is now significantly louder and clearer perfect for those Netflix chill sessions
