Setting Up Kodi Emulation Station on Odroid XU4: A Step-by-Step Guide
The first step in setting up Kodi emulation station on our Odroid XU4 is to update the device. It's just much easier for me to press ENTER and it's going to start the long process of updating so this is very important after we update we won't get that black screen when we exit Kodi if you still get the black screen you can always hit ctrl alt F but right now before the update emulation station gives me a black screen when I try to start it let it sit I'll be back in a little while when this is finished out all right so everything's done updating let's go ahead and reboot from here we can type in sudo reboot or go up to system shutdown restart now we need to add some roms so we can play some retro games go - oh joy Tom folder we're going to place our roms inside of roms and the corresponding directory so main will go in named GBA you'll go in GBA so on and so on you can download the games directly onto the xu4 from a web browser I cantake exactly where to get them but if you do a quick Google search you will find everything you need another great source of information is emu paradise now I have a USB stick with a few roms on it already so I just plugged my USB stick in open in a new window and inside of here I have some n64 SNES PSX what do is just open up my n64 folder on the xu4 grab those games there put them right in here just like retro pie Ill also transfer some Neo Geo games so its a Neo Geo you'll need the Neo Geo jet BIOS just going to grab these put them over here let them transfer to the Xu fours internal storage and we're now ready to start emulation station.
I'm using a wired ps3 controller there is a way to set up bluetooth on this but it does take a little bit of configuring if you guys are that interested in it I can make a video but it's going to be a little while from now I am so backed up in my real job its just hard to make videos lately so I'm going to plug in my ps3 controller to the xu4 now I'm going to launch emulation station applications games emulation station so we have one gamepad detected that's my ps3 controller we're going to configure it hold your a button I use X as a when I'm using a ps3 controller so here's your d-pad up-down left-right start select a P X Y autumn left trigger autumn right trigger top left trigger top right trigger this will be your l3 and r3 push down on your thumb sticks up-down left-right up-down left-right press whatever button you map to a4 okay and here we are.
So for some reason right now my NeoGeo is showing up as MSX that is a little weird I'm going to have to work on this when I propose something in the forum about this also so Im just going to go and start Metal Slug so it is in the correct folder but that's weird that MSX is showing up now there are a few bugs in these builds here so you're just going to have to deal with it in the future this is probably going to be updated and fully working with everything but right now there's a lot of questions that you may need to ask on the forums to get answers to but it runs amazing.
So to exit out I press both of my thumb sticks start and select isnt working within the emulation station build here but we also have n64 installed start Goldeneye were now playing Nintendo 64 on our Odroid XE for running game station turbo the sound is a little jittery within the n64 emulator and Im really hoping for an update soon metric is pretty much the only one working on this and I know well have a family hes got his own job and everything so we just might have to wait a little while.
Another great option for your XE poor is running recall box its called Auto Sarah now I think its up to 5.3 if Im not mistaken and its very easy to install and it works great so if you dont need a desktop or anything like that you can definitely run bada Sarah for your emulator on your Odroid xu4.
I really like this build because we have the full-blown desktop environment we have Kodi and everything built in so Im going to quit emulation station will bring us right back here so thats it for now guys I really hope this helped you out if you have any questions let me know in the comments below a lot of this stuff Im not going to be able to answer so your best bet is to go over to the Odroid forum and ask your questions there all the links are in the description and like always thanks for watching
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey what's going on guys is ETA prime back here again today we're going to be going over installing Gamestation turbo on your Odroid xu4 this also works on the Xu 3 before we get started I recommend using an emmc module SD cards are much slower and I've had tons of trouble using an SD card with Gamestation turbo so in this video I'm using an e MMC module it does work on an SD but you might run into a few problems get speed something being corrupted very quickly I don't know what the deal is with the SD card and this image but it just doesn't like the SD cards so let's go ahead and get started here first thing you're going to need is your MMC or SD card plugged into your PC right click properties make sure it is formatted fat32 we want a fresh card to do this with if it's not formatted fat32 you can download SD formatter now I'll leave links in the description for you guys very easy to install very easy to use I'll go over real quick we'll start SD formatter from here the drop down menu make sure your SD card or MMC module is chosen do not try to format a hard drive or anything with data that you need on it be safe with this triple check if you have to so this is my emmc module it's 16 gigabytes I'll just keep my save name format yes yes now it's ready to go next thing we're going to need to do is get etcher now this tutorial is going to work on Linux Mac or Windows because we're using a chore to install Gamestation turbo to our SD card or emmc from the drop down menu here just choose your correct version we have a Mac version Linux 64-bit and 32-bit here we also have 32-bit windows and 64-bit windows I just always download the installer it's easier and I'm going to use it in the future so you might as well have it on your PC we're going to head over to the Odroid forum and download game station turbo links are in the description just check them out I want to scroll down we want to download the Debian Jesse version it's 1.2 gigabytes but when we extract it it's 4 gigabytes now I'm just going to go over real quick the Odroid xu4 had a price drop it's now 62 dollars on a marriage so if you're in the US and you're tired of that Chinese shipping go ahead and order from these guys they're great they're in California I'm in North Carolina and they ship everything to me in three days quick shipping if I have any questions they get right back to me they also sell the emmc modules now they have a ton of them and they are more expensive than an SD card I completely understand but one of the good values right now going on is the 128 gigabyte it is $80 but 128 gigabyte SD cards are anywhere from 40 to 80 bucks anyway this is going to double your speed and it just works a lot better on the Odroid now that we have everything downloaded we're going to need to extract Gamestation turbo it's going to come zip so you'll right click extract with WinRAR or 7-zip this is Gamestation turbo 3.1 RC 2 for the xu 3 this also works for the xu 4 so i've extracted it looks something like this when you're done you'll have a disk image file and it's 4 gigabytes so you saw at the beginning I have my emmc module plugged into my PC already we're going to launch ature first off we need to select our image this is our Odroid game station turbo double click make sure you get the disk image file from here make sure you have your storage device chosen do not try to write this to a USB Drive or a hard drive like I said with SD formatter triple-check if you have to and click flash so etcher is going to install game station turbo to our storage device of choice that is going to verify the file system we're almost done here this really depends on how fast your SD card or your e MMC module is so sit back and relax it will finish ok so now when enter is finished it will tell you flash successfully accidentally closed out of it before I hit record on accident so it'll tell you that it flashed successfully it's time to go to the Odroid xu4 place your SD card in the SD card slot if you're using an emmc module place it in the emmc slot on the bottom of the board there's also a switch on the side of the xu4 you're using SD make sure it's set to SD if you're using emmc make sure it's set to e MMC I'm going to plug in the keyboard mouse and my Ethernet move over there now alright guys so it took me about one and a half minutes to boot up completely what it's going to do is start it's going to automatically reboot one time to expand the file system and it'll bring you into XBMC if you're using an SD card it can take up to 10 minutes so be patient as long as your red lights on and your blue lights flashing it's working we're going to exit XBMC otherwise known as Kodi give it a second here I have a mouse keyboard and Ethernet plugged in so I'll just press escape we're going to come down to the bottom here press the little power button click exit if you're lucky enough not to get a black screen when you exit Cody the first time awesome if you get a black screen don't panic you'll still have a cursor in the middle of the screen on your keyboard press ctrl alt F it will bring us back to the desktop we now need to update this is very important so the best way to do this is to actually open up a browser and we're going to head back over to the Odroid forum I'll leave a link down below or just go to google and type in Gamestation turbo xu4 so this forum topic here is 20 pages long if you run into any troubles search the forum first if you can't find an answer go ahead and post a question the guys over at Odroid are very very nice especially maverick the guy who created Gamestation turbo we're going to scroll down a little bit first things first we need to update so we're going to go ahead and copy apt-get update and an apt-get upgrades and an apt-get distribution upgrade right click copy we're just going to minimize this I'm going to open up Alex terminal right here double click now our default password is Odroid we want to type in fu enter we're going to enter super user mode Odroid is our password press Enter now we're going to paste the update right there now this can take up to 45 minutes guys you need to be patient with it do not turn it off just let it fit it'll finish up if you want Wi-Fi Ameritrade does offer USB Wi-Fi and Bluetooth dongles that are compatible with the xu4 I'm using Ethernet it's just much easier for me to press ENTER and it's going to start the long process of updating so this is very important after we update we won't get that black screen when we exit Kodi if you still get the black screen you can always hit ctrl alt F but right now before the update emulation station gives me a black screen when I try to start it let it sit I'll be back in a little while when this is finished out all right so everything's done updating let's go ahead and reboot from here we can type in sudo reboot or go up to system shutdown restart now we need to add some roms so we can play some retro games go - oh joy Tom folder we're going to place our roms inside of roms and the corresponding directory so main will go in named GBA you'll go
