BMW M8 Competition vs 825bhp Ford Mustang review _ Europe v USA showdown _ Autocar

The BMW M4 Competition is a beast on the track, and I'm excited to put it through its paces.

This still moves around nicely, it's still a pleasing car. It's not loads of feel back through the steering, but it's precise and smooth. The front end is so what I turn on, oh where's go in, it's gonna need oversteer, but don't worry about that. That's one bill to the BMW however.

Like you were clearly quicker than me, yeah not like what would be so much sleet same because I thought that the traction would just give me a massive advantage, but it doesn't look as sideways as I expect no, it's you know it's got way more grip than I thought. We would have you kind of think a rear-wheel drive car with an LSD 800 plus horsepower, you think it's gonna be an absolute animal and it is, and it's a real physical wrestling match.

But I love it for that really, love it for that. You're on pilot support for us, they're quite good in the way really good tire Pirellis. Hmm, do you reckon if this was in rear-wheel drive mode, it will be faster? That's the thing, you can switch it can't you? Yes, take a true drive mode and then try again.

I'm sure again, I'll try not to crash into you that's it, that is rear-wheel drive let's see if it's still giggity okay. Well, it's got a lot less traction right on top of him. I know I'm gonna have to work a lot harder and every time it steps out either stay in it and I might say it now glued to the back bumper hopefully neck-and-neck.

Now and it's bound to the fellow. Can't think spray with water getting to this one, there's a bit more understeer on the way and add a lot more oversteer on the way out. Haven't caught that Mustang is still stuck on the back of this dog I'm having a little bit of work why there's a big drift i won I'll get it straight in a sec wait for me Matt wait wait he's like he's gone because I was just on the lock stops.

Okay, I'm gonna hang every time I get back up the gas. Of this the rear steps out and it I think it's going quicker I think it's breaking away more quickly than it does in the Mustang. I think this has less traffic than before but then maybe that's not a surprise because if you want traction leave it in four-wheel drive mode.

And uh soon as you want into rear-wheel drive mode at really even things up there. That made it a bit more even, that made it a lot more even. I think two wheel drive in the wet is the faster I think it is actually the first car you are like you seems to me you've got loads of traction.

I have yeah and I could see actually you were for me you look at you were battling understeer and oversteer and well I've really got a battle is oversteer that's in for you. Because this yeah this under says a bit on the way in and it is a lot on the way out.

And it seems to oversteer more quickly which is not onion not that unusual for BMWs is it an M4 and M4A1? Got a particularly nice transition from grip to slip, it kind of grip grip grip and flips. But that might be because it's wet but it's a physical car.

But I love it for that yeah I do too. I do too. So this is I mean this this is a fun a thing really it's not a proper group test is it this but one all on the lap test I think really. Because if you want traction leave it in four-wheel drive so it so I find if you want unlocks put it into were driving so it's so uncomfortable with and you can do both which is amazing.

Which is a really clever thing in that which is true so technically a sort of victory for the BMW but if it was your money you've got a Range Rover and a city car and you just want a weekend toy I think this. I think you know if I have my son he would go mad his school friends would go mad and this kind of brings out the ten-year-old in me.

And if I had two other cars as well this is a really good car just to get in and go for a blast shake some Cobras off yeah I agree. I think is it as a daily absolutely finally you know you live in a flat you've got one parking space this is it this isn't it but that is special so I think unsurprisingly maybe draw a draw a draw.

But we are agreed there is a moral victory of sorts for the CSA hundred Mustang which is just a top top giggle all the time and so that's that. Thank you for watching do appreciate it I know he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's he's.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello you join us at our test track where we have two cars and mate what this mat this is of a Sutton CS 800 Mustang Matt popped up on it and I will show you what is under here so we've got a 5 liter supercharged v8 with a whacking great supercharger pops on the top and you need this believe it or not to clear the supercharger if I can find them on it right so have a look at that so look how high the supercharger is mounted it's actually higher than the wings so this carbon-fibre bonnet is a necessity to cover that and have you ever seen an air box that big no not since the last time I was on a large boat so it's called CS 800 which employs well it's got 800 have but life start and say it could have anything up to eight hundred and twenty-five horsepower so it's an absolute monster that is cool so you've driven it a bit I've driven it a bit the reason we are here is because I've brought an m8 competition with me and if you are in the market for one hundred hundred twenty-five thousand pound 2+2 large gup-a and you've got a couple of cars you don't necessarily need something totally sensible not that an m8 is totally sensible anyway what are your options it's not a conventional twin test there are other cars that are more like an m8 but yeah this is just good fun isn't it so we just thought we'd get the two together we see which is cooler which is more fun maybe which is faster have a race why not so let's tell you what they're both like to drive because I think under what we do best here go check our subscribe if you'd like to see me first then to the BMW m8 alright so welcome to the inside of the m8 which is what well if you call it a coupe a version of the m5 that would be slightly accurate but also slightly selling this car a bit before there is lots of it that is the same there is a platform comment into the 5 series 6 series 7 series and 8 series which means that this car gets the same engine and gearbox as the m5 so it's a 4.4 litre twin-turbocharged v8 making 616 horsepower and lows a talk drive through an 8-speed twin-clutch gearbox to all four wheels but it's all contribute in cluding the fact that you can put this current a rear-wheel drive mode as you can the m5 there's loads of configurable stuff when it comes to the dynamics of the car so I've got an M mode here which means I can choose Road sport and track or I can go into the setup and put in more detailed systems and set up my own preference for the engine response chassis response Steven responsive and you can input those various things your favourite into the presets here on the steering wheel but where it differs from an m5 is that this guy has a short wheelbase so although it is still quite a big car and quite a heavy car at nearly 1,900 kilograms it disguises its weight in general driving really well I mean it's a really agile dynamic thing it does have an extra dimension over an m5 while retaining most but by no means all of that car's refinement this cut this car does not ride as well as an m5 it's not as comfortable but it's more of a sports car so that figures whether it's as much of a sports car as an 800 horsepower Ford Mustang though easy question I think works so you join me inside the Sutton CS 800 Mustang and what a wonderful place to be this is let's start with the 800 so the geyser Club start under basic they've bolted a superchargers to the minitor v they have given it individual throttle bodies high flow fuel injectors and a whopping great air filter max that all together and this thing will produce 800 horsepower up to 825 because it's a hambo engine so the guys that Clive started say it will definitely have they only lost power but if you're lucky it might have up to eight hundred twenty five horsepower it is such a fun car to drive this is everything that I love about cars it's the perfect antidote to all this electric car nonsense it's you what a great engine and the manual gearbox and limit slip diff and it is just a fun place to be I promise you you'll absolutely love this car when I was 10 years old and I was dreaming about driving cars this is the sort of car that I dreamt about listen to this it is everything of my 10 year old dream mats in the MA that's a great car but I suspect it's very German and this is very American whose big about him it's kind of a bit Donald Trump in this car it shouts a lot it's got access to some mega firepower it's bright orange it's the Trump of cars love it thanks Mauro that is a beautiful car really really beautiful makes Mustangs great again but in a firepower race against to the BMW just how great is this all-american muscle car so we both know what we think about these two cars and it's time probably to have a little bit of an objective assessment we're gonna run down a little piece of test track I'm gonna lead and find out which of these two cars is quicker it's a bit greasy underfoot this cars four-wheel drive so you would think despite having a 200 horsepower disadvantage and a little bit of a weight disadvantage I think as well you would think that that will be quicker but let's see cards on the table although I absolutely adore this car that thing I've got a hope in hell of keeping up with him today but I will give it a damn good try okay I can hear it over the sound of AC it does sound mega that Mustang right first corner a little bit lean on our lead break-in to the left-hander Branford there I've got loads of traction on the way and Mauro has not so I pulled up a little gap this fast corner here are leaked a bit it does move around moves around over this crest as well which I'm not a huge fan of actually there's not loads of great feeling this thing only be inferred for here on the unicorn the Mustang is becoming a smaller specular mirror as this every time it lets go it just drives itself out pulls itself out by transferring power to the front and it just gives itself a damp weather advantage owing to the fact that even when traction breaks like that now I can stay in it and it pulls the front out very little understeer but when you get on the power you're like a wrestling maximal everything's ok he's gone again ever he just got that negative factor for all right so despite a power disadvantage I can use more of it more of the time now this still moves around nicely is still a pleasing carb it's not loads of feel back through the steering but it's precise and smooth it has front end so what I turn on Oh where's go in its gonna need oversteer but it let me don't worry that is one bill to the BMW however like you were clearly quicker yeah not like what would be so much sleet same because I thought that the traction would just give me a massive advantage that take a true drive mode and then try again I'm sure again I'll try not to crash into you that's it that is rear-wheel drive let's see if it's still giggity okay well it's got a lot less traction right on top of him I know I'm gonna have to work a lot harder and every time it steps out either stay in it and I might say it now glued to the back bumper hopefully neck-and-neck now and it's bound to the fellow I can't think spray with water getting to this one there's a bit more understeer on the way and add a lot more oversteer on the way out after haven't caught that Mustang is still stuck on the back of this dog I'm having a little bit of work why there's a big drift i won I'll get it straight in a sec wait for me Matt wait wait wait he's like he's gone because I was just on the lock stops okay I'm gonna hang every time I get back up the gas of this the rear steps out and it I think it's going quicker I think it's breaking away more quickly than it does in the Mustang I think this has less traffic than before but then maybe that's not a surprise because if you want traction leave it in four-wheel drive mode and uh soon as you want into rear-wheel drive mode at really even things up there that made it a bit more even that made it a lot more even I think two wheel drive in the wet that's the faster I think it is actually the first car you are like you seems to me you've got loads of traction I have yeah and I could see actually you were for me you look at you were battling understeer and oversteer and well I've really got a battle is oversteer that's in for you because this yeah this under says a bit on the way in and it is a lot on the way out and it seems to oversteer more quickly which is not onion not that unusual for BMWs is it an m4 and m4a1 got a particularly nice transition from grip to slip it kind of grip grip grip and in flips but that might be because it's wet but it's a physical car but I love it for that yeah I do too I do too so this is I mean this this is a fun a thing really it's not a proper group test is it this but one all on the lap test I think really because I look if you want traction leave it in four-wheel drive so it so I find if you want unlocks put it into were driving so it's so uncomfortable with and you can do both which is amazing which is a really clever thing in that which is true so technically a sort of victory for the BMW but if it was your money you've got a Range Rover and a city car and you just want a weekend toy I think this I think you know if I have my son he would go mad his school friends would go mad and this kind of brings out the ten-year-old in me and if I had two other cars as well this is a really good car just to get in and go for a blast shake some Cobras off yeah I agree I think is it as a daily absolutely finally you know you live in a flat you've got one parking space this is it this isn't it but that is special so I think unsurprisingly maybe draw a draw a draw but we are agreed there is a moral victory of sorts for the CSA hundred Mustang which is just a top top giggle all the time and so that's that thank you for watching do appreciate it I know he says every time but if you liked it please like it\n"
